Backstory:

Carmilla was one of the first demons created to reside in Hell, destined to be the Demon Queen and the devoted mate of her male counterpart, Viktor. At first, the demonic entities were merely shadows with limited power, but over time, they matured into physical manifestations inspired by the Deadly Sins. As the demonic pair grew older and stronger, they discovered the dark powers and pleasures of lust, but despite all best efforts, no children ever resulted from the marriage.

Finally, through the work of the shadows and mastery of the dark arts, the pair began to build an army of "children"---demons who would serve their masters and fight to defend the realms of Hell from outside forces. While Viktor threw himself into learning how to build and govern an empire, Carmilla set about using her charm and intellect to build relationships, persuade those who voiced opposition, and implement a system of diplomacy that would inspire lasting devotion (whether others liked it or not.)

Resigned to the fact that she and Viktor could not have children of their own, Carmilla began to view the dominion of Hell as her family, and maternal instinct began to be replaced by sheer ambition. She began to delve into the study of her own dark gifts, seeking for ways that the little Utopia she and Viktor had built in Hell could be expanded beyond the borders, along with their power and influence. It was then, to the surprise of the happy couple, that their first child came along. Their son, the new Prince, would be a beacon of hope for all, and inspire a sense of peace and happiness within the Demon couple.

Upon understanding how essential the miracle of life was to building their empire, Carmilla was eager to share this gift. She chose the most beautiful, clever, and loyal Demon women, and bestowed the gift of fertility, ensuring the race would continue indefinitely. Almost as if being rewarded for channeling her energy into motherhood, a second child would follow, another son to help the empire flourish and complete Carmilla's vision of a happy family. It just so happened that her vision of a happy family included world domination.

As centuries passed, the population of Hell flourished, as did the couple's knowledge and power. No more children arrived, and Carmilla and her husband both grew restless with one another. Quite naturally, they had affairs with others, though Carmilla quickly learned her reaction to finding her husband with others was one of rage and vengeance. Although she did not necessarily feel love, and took her own share of lovers in the search for adventure, she felt some sort of unnamed emotional upheaval each time she learned of a new bond in her husband's life. If he did not love her, was it possible he loved others instead? Was she the only one who found it impossible to feel the emotion most called "love"?

These affairs, coupled with the power she'd helped to bestow upon her sons, began to give Carmilla the sense that men held too much power, an unfair advantage in their ability to take many lovers and have many children. She came to feel overshadowed (pun intended), and used her magical gifts to create a powerful being of her very own.

After successfully seducing the Fae King, Carmilla once again called upon the shadows, and created a daughter who would hold many of the Fae's powers—but tainted them with the darkness of the Demons*. When the Fae Queen found out what Carmilla had done, she grew furious and cast the being into Hell, decreeing the matter was never to be discussed again.

The arrival of the half-Fae caused a stir in the Demon Court. Viktor was obviously displeased with the situation, but any time he brought it up, Carmilla mentioned the "weird" relationship he had with the Dracul twins—whom she believed to worship him in an unnatural way. She really, really wished they would be banished back to the recesses of Hell and stay out of her Court, but she was also well aware Viktor would never allow that, or forgive her for such a betrayal. The only way that would happen would be if they were disloyal. Carmilla fully believed it was only a matter of time before that happened, even if she had to help the situation along.

When her energies are directed properly, she is the type of character to defend her kingdom from war. When directed improperly, she is probably the one who started it. Carmilla's goals in the world have nothing to do with peace, but with ambition---and the ability to lie, cheat, steal, and manipulate to get what she wants are attributes she'd consider the best of her character.

Personality:

Carmilla is intelligent, witty, and prone to fits of jealousy when it comes to other women. They don't even have to be sleeping with her husband, the mere presence of another woman who might upstage her infuriates her. While she finds it unfair that men seem to have more power in the world than women, she's really more of the problem than the solution, since all other women are merely rivals. She is self-absorbed, vain, and utterly possessive—though she also has moments of charm and doesn't hesitate to play the femme fatale. She appears to be a beguiling woman in her late 20's, but she pays very little attention to compliments about her appearance. It is, to her, simply a masque she's designed to allow her best attributes to shine while wearing a human form.

Though she has many enviable talents and strong relationships with her families, Carmilla often feels incomplete and suffers from a sort of longing. Her husband is a very controlling, dominating figure, and she doesn't wish to exist as an extension of him—but to have power in her own right. Even her sons see their father as the final authority in most things, and she resents this. She wants to be an equal to Viktor in every way, and she knows that's not quite how it is. The more time passes, the more this becomes intolerable to her.

Carmilla has always maintained a good relationship with all of her children, even if she is a bit on the controlling side. While she favours her younger son, considering him to be the more clever and manipulative of the two, she genuinely wants what is best for both of them. While she doesn't exactly feel love, she has a maternal connection, and would burn down the world if anyone harmed one of them.

Similarly, while she is not in love with Viktor in the traditional "human" sense of the word, woe to anyone who tries to harm him or separate them. They have a unique bond, even if it's often expressed via jealousy, manipulation, and sarcastic comments. Beyond everything else, they are the oldest of friends, long-time lovers, and when they put their heads together, are actually very good rulers that have won the respect of their people.

They may not be the nicest of people *all the time*, but the Royal Demon Family has made Hell a prosperous, fun-loving realm, and work hard to redeem its reputation! Although they bicker, conspire against each other, and occasionally try to murder one another, the Royal Demon Family will always stand together against outsiders—an advantage they have over other races.

* Note: I've written this character into the story as an NPC, but if anyone wants to make it a playable character, I'm totally fine with that.

Abilities:

Shadowform. Carmilla is able to take the form of a black shadow, her spirit without any physical form. In this form, she is able to pass through objects, lurk places without being detected, and generally traverse the world without the inconvenience of a body. The herb sage, as well as magic wards and barriers, will prevent her from entering a place in Shadowform. She cannot enter holy or consecrated lands.

Shadow Manipulation. In addition to crafting her own physical form from the shadows, Carmilla also has the gift of manipulating the essence of shadows to form objects. Taken to the extreme, she is able to create other beings, though all are touched by darkness and from a less "pure" bloodline than other demons or hybrids born the traditional way. She can use shadows to obfuscate or create illusions, though it wears away at her magical energy.

Immortality. Brought into the world without a physical form, Carmilla is an immortal, ethereal being. She cannot be killed, merely banished. Her human form can take damage, which heals more quickly than that of a normal human. However, her human form can be destroyed in a similar manner to a vampire's—fire, decapitation, and injuries that cannot heal will cause Carmilla to be confined to the realms of Hell in either her true form or shadow form, while her human form regenerates. Holy objects, places, or consecrated lands will cause damage to any form.

Emotional Manipulation. Carmilla is able to influence the emotions of those around her, both through Compulsion and Telepathy. Compulsion requires her to be either in either human or demon form, as both touch and eye contact are required for at least 30 seconds. It is possible for her to use telepathy in Shadowform, though her messages do not transmit as reliably, and are often instead felt as an aura. A person must be in the same room/general area for Telepathy to work. Those with mental shields or abilities preventing emotional manipulation will not be affected by Telepathy, and Compulsion will only be a mild emotional response.

Enhanced Speed, Strength, and Healing. Carmilla's abilities are on par with that of other supernatural creatures, such as werewolves or vampires. In either human or true demon form, she has an advantage over humans in fights and excels at using melee weapons. However, she'd probably think twice before getting into an altercation with a dragon.

Contractual bonds. For those looking to make a deal with the Devil, Carmilla is the next best thing. Once a contract is willingly signed and entered into, there is no turning back. Breaking the terms of the contract will result in the forfeiture of one's soul and life amongst Demonkind for eternity. The contractual bond enables Carmilla to track a being's movements and summon them at will. A contract can be ended via mutual agreement if an acceptable sacrifice is offered to the Demons.
