I picked Levin up and was careful not to wake him as I carried him into his room. I gently placed Levin on his bed and tucked him in. I then went back out into the living room and Malachi was still sleeping soundly. A smile crept up on my lips as I ran my fingers through his soft hair. I picked him up to put him to bed when he gripped onto my shirt.
"Mom.....don't leave mom...." Malachi mumbled and squeezed my shirt in his fist.
My heart throbbed at his words, his mom....why isn't she taking care of them? Where is she? I went back into the boys' bedroom and placed Malachi on his bed. Both Levin and Malachi share a room, it's quite large...lucky rich people. I began to place the blankets over Malachi when he grabbed my hand and squeezed tightly.
"Please.....stay..." Malachi whispered.
I looked to his face and he had opened his eyes and tears were forming. I couldn't just leave him when he looked at me like this.
"Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere." I said with a smile and kneeled down to Malachi's level.
I squeezed his hand back and he smiled slightly before closing his eyes. I wiped away the stray tears that slipped down his cheeks. Soon, Malachi's breath was gentle signaling he was asleep. I gently stroked his hair as he slept and laid my head down on the soft bed. My eyes felt heavy and tired as I slowly drifted off to sleep. When I woke up my knees were sore from kneeling on the ground. I stood up and wobbled a bit and looked around.....
Where was I again?...Oh! Right, I am babysitting. I looked towards Malachi's bed and he was still asleep, same with Levin. I pulled out my phone and looked at the time. 5:30 pm. I rubbed my eyes sleepily and left the room. I slept for four hours...
I walked into the living room and opened the curtains on the giant windows of the room. A deep orange, red, and yellow poured into the room as the sun was slowly going down. I smiled at the beautiful view as all the colors bled through and shone on all large buildings. I took a deep breath and turned around, earlier Levin was hungry. They should be waking up soon so I should make dinner and maybe that man comes home. I think the apartment nameplate read Aaron so maybe that's him?
I shrugged my shoulders and entered the kitchen. I opened the fridge and cupboards and pulled out the ingredients to make spaghetti and meatballs. I began to boil the noodles and started to make the sauce. I carefully molded hamburger meat into small balls and then cooked them. I finished cooking and dished up two plates and set them on the table. When is their dad going to be back? He should at least get home for dinner.
I went back into the boys' room and turned on the light. "Malachi, Levin, wake up." I said gently and stroked Levin's hair.
"Mm?" Levin made a small noise and opened his eyes.
"Dinners ready, wake up." I smiled a went over to Malachi's bed. "Malachi, wake up."
Malachi slowly sat up from his bed and stretched then looked at me. "I'm hungry." Malachi mumbled.
I chuckled and picked Levin up from his bed, "That's good. I have dinner ready."
Malachi smiled and jumped up from his bed and ran out of the room. I followed and I sat Levin at the table. I smiled as they began to eat with big smiles. "Malachi, can I ask you something?" I asked.
"Sure." Malachi said as he stopped eating.
I smiled and wiped the corners of his mouth with a napkin, "When will your dad be home?" I asked.
Malachi thought for a minute before speaking, "I....don't know. He comes and goes regularly but never really stays for meals or to play with us." Malachi said in a sad voice.
I frowned slightly, "What does your dad work as?"
"A business man I think. He got a business when grandpa went away and that's when dad got really busy." Malachi answered.
"Oh...well, being a company owner must be hard work. Wait, how did you get to and from school?"
"Dad's secretary used to take us to school but stopped because she was annoyed that she had to babysit. But I promise, we won't annoy you so don't leave." Malachi said with big green eyes.
I smiled, "I won't leave, how can I leave two precious kids here alone when their dad is so busy." I patted Malachi's head and looked back at the clock. It had gotten later and the sun finally went down.
The two finally finished eating and I washed the dishes. I turned on the TV to distract them as I finished cleaning up the kitchen and a few rooms I missed. A few hours passed and the boys went to bed for the night. I sat on the couch passing the time while I scrolled through Instagram when the front door opened. I quickly turned off my phone and went to the entrance.
"Oh...you're still here?" He asked tiredly.
"I am. I couldn't leave Levin and Malachi alone." I answered. "Oh,and welcome home."
"Heh...thanks. Oh, I'm Aaron by the way. Sorry for making you work right away." Aaron said as he took off his shoes and we walked into the living room.
"It's fine, those two behave very nicely." I smiled.
Aaron's eyes widened as he looked around the house, "Wow.....it's so clean." Aaron mumbled.
I laughed and said, "Of course. It's because I cleaned. Of course Levin and Malachi helped."
Aaron turned to me and frowned, "They helped you? Wow, I can barely get Malachi ready for school before he's throwing a fit."
"Um...I wanted to ask something and I'm sorry for being nosy but...where's their mom?" I asked gently.
Sadness formed on Aaron's face and he let out a small breath, "Sadly, she passed away awhile ago so it's just been me and the boys."
I looked away and felt guilty all of a sudden, "Oh...I'm so sorry."
"It's fine. Anyways, it smells amazing." Aaron said with a smile as he took off his suit jacket and walked into the kitchen.
"I made dinner. Would you like some?" I asked.
Aaron gave a small nod. "Okay, go sit down and I'll get it for you." I said as I grabbed a plate.
"Oh no, you don't have to I can-" Aaron began to speak and I cut him off.
"No, you worked hard today and you must be tired so go sit." I said sternly.
Aaron laughed slightly and his expression became gentle before he finally went out and sat at the dining table. I dished up Aaron's share and put the plate in front of him. He thanked me with a smile and I began to gather my stuff.
"What're you doing?" Aaron asked.
"I should get going, it's gotten late." I answered as I grabbed my coat.
"Why don't you eat with me? You made such a great meal you should have some too." Aaron spoke.
"I wouldn't want to intrude anymore than I already have." I said.
Aaron frowned but didn't push the issue. "At least let me drive you home. It's quite dark."
I thought for a moment before nodding, "Okay, thank you."
I smiled and Aaron quickly grabbed his keys and we left the apartment together.
