Chapter 20

Roman jumped and punched the air in triumph. "Hell yeah, I won!"

"Wow, only your 7th try." Janus said, picking his nails. "Anyway, you get to pick a prize, I guess."

Roman looked along the rack at the top of the stall. "Tiny teddy bear." He decided. "Please." He added as an afterthought.

Janus supressed an eye roll and reached up to grab Roman's prize. "There you go." His smile faded to nothing. "Now get lost. Bye, Logan."

"Uhm-" Logan jumped. "Bye."

Roman grabbed Logan's hand and pulled him away. "Here." He handed Logan the little teddy bear.

"But it's your prize. You won it."

Roman shrugged and took Logan's hand again. "I won it for you. Besides, you got me something. I need to return the favour."

"Oh." Logan said. "Well, thank you Roman."

Roman grinned at Logan. "You're welcome, sweetheart. Now come on, we've got so much still to do."

"C'mon, c'mon, c'mon!" Roman said, pulling Logan along.

"Roman, I'm going as fast as-" Roman stopped suddenly and Logan had to stumble to a stop to avoid running into him.

Roman stared up at the ferris wheel, a slow, excited smile spreading over his face. "You're not afraid of heights, right?" He asked.

"I'm not the biggest fan of them." Logan said. "But not scared, no."

"Great." Roman said, grinning. "Cause we're going on the ferris wheel."

"Do I get a choice in this?" Logan asked. Roman shook his head gleefully.

"We're at the Spring Fete. We have to go on the ferris wheel." Roman insisted. "Especially at sunset!"

"What's so special about sunset?" Logan asked. Roman giggled gleefully.

"You'll see." Roman said and pulled Logan into line for the ferris wheel. Logan looked up at the ferris wheel a little apprehensively. Sure, he was fine with heights but this looked very high. Maybe it was just perspective. Logan hoped it was just perspective.

Roman jiggled about in his seat, making the cabin they were sat in sway a little. Logan looked up at the sky, dotted with grey clouds tinged with pink, and tried to calm down.

"Sweetheart? You okay?" Roman asked, stopping bouncing around.

"Hm? Oh, yes, fine." Logan said. Roman tilted his head to the side. For some reason, Logan couldn't lie to Roman. "I mean, I'm a little nervous but I'll be fine."

Roman took Logan's hand. "I promise you, when you get to the top, it really doesn't look that high."

Logan was about to say something else but the ferris wheel started with a jolt and they were off up. Logan looked over the edge of the cabin at the fete slowly getting smaller below them and felt a little smile tug at his lips.

"You know, maybe it isn't that bad." He said quietly. Roman nudged him.

"Told you. Just wait til we get to the top, though." Roman grinned, his eyes sparkling in the slowly dying light.

Soon enough, they reached the top. The ride juddered to a stop.

"Why've we stopped?" Logan asked. Roman shrugged and leaned over the side of the cabin, looking down.

"They always stop when someone new gets to the top, to let them look at the view. Speaking of which, look." Roman grinned and pointed out across the village.

They'd reached the top of the ferris wheel just in time to see the sun setting over Stonegate. All the shops and houses were cast into shadow, making them look like silhouettes in the sun. The sky was dashed with pink and orange and gold, long streaks of cloud along the sky. Logan'd seen sunsets before but never from so high up.

"Wow." He said quietly. Roman nodded and grinned. "Do you see this every year?"

Roman nodded. "Well, more or less."

"Woah." Logan pushed his glasses up his nose a little. "I'm gonna have to come to the Spring Fete more often."

Happy Pride Month, everyone!! Also, I don't know if I'll be able to write tomorrow because I'm going to see my grandparents.
Bye,
Blaize
