Chapter 13

"Hello," I answered in a groggy haze as my eyes fell on the sliver of the sun coming from beneath my curtain.

"Good morning, sunshine," Trevor sang into the phone. "It's my day off, and I want brunch. Get your ass out of bed. We're three blocks away, and we're coming over."

"Mmhmm," I mumbled before dropping my phone-clad hand to the side and rolling away from the sun's light, but my phone soon rang again. "Hello," I groaned once more.

"You gave me your spare key, and I'm not afraid to use it," Trevor threatened.

"I'm up; I'm up." I groaned.

I glanced around the room in my just-awake daze before slinking from my bed to the shower. I had barely washed my face when Trevor arrived.

"Hello, hello," he called out over the shower curtain.

"Hey," I called back to him.

"Chris is picking out an outfit for you," he warned.

"Do not let him throw out any of my clothes!" I shot extra loud in the hopes Chris would hear me.

"Fair, I can solve that problem." He then proceeded to yell, "Chris, I'm getting a boy update!"

"Did someone say updates?" Chris' voice had joined the bathroom.

"Can this wait for brunch? I'm kind of in the middle of something here," I complained.

"Oh, come on, it's nothing we haven't seen before," Trevor lamented.

"How is the trash bag plan working out?" Chris added.

"Great. I've learned to use a headband instead of a hair elastic to be more comfortable. I also have learned that washing my hair with one hand has proven tricky," I explained.

"Bored," Trevor childishly called out. "I want to hear about the boy!"

"Fine," I lamented as I shut off the water and reached for my towel before ripping the shower curtain.

"Hello, sunshine," Trevor teased again. "Let's hear all the details..."

"There aren't a lot of details. We've been hanging out." I shrugged.

"What exactly does 'been hanging out' mean?" Chris prodded as he brushed through my hair.

"Ew," I announced. "We've just been getting to know each other."

"Boring," Trevor announced again.

"I want to hear about Lee," Chris pressed.

"There's less than nothing to talk about there. Aside from one ride home, I haven't seen much of him. Nathan comes to my place."

"Lee Smyth gave you a ride home?" Chris' voice broke.

"Yeah, it was just a ride," I sighed. "Although..."

"Oh my God..." Chris fanned himself.

"He isn't as terrible as I may have first assessed," I admitted.

"I knew it. The man is a saint," Chris cooed.

"I wouldn't go that far," I cautioned.

"Bored," Trevor announced again. "I was really hoping you'd be more exciting with a man in your life, but somehow you've sucked the excitement out of this as well. It's truly an unrivaled talent."

"Fine. What do you want to talk about?" I shot as I flung a hair clip at Trevor.

"Well, let's talk shop... Ms. Lonelyheart is a lonely heart no more." Trevor's words came with a dramatic flair.

"What? And you let us yammer on about me?" I scolded.

"Sorry, I thought you may have something resembling excitement," Trevor teased as Chris started on my makeup. "Anyway, she came into the shop with a man, and he was cute."

"I'm disturbingly happy about this news," I admitted. "I legit think I may cry."

"And that, my love, is why we're so interested in your love life. We want to cry happy tears as well," Chris absently said as he powered my face.

"I'm not a Ms. Lonelyheart," I argued.

"Don't furrow your brow like that; you'll get premature wrinkles," Chris scolded.

"Anyway," Trevor continued. "And there's a new girl at work. She is a mess, but I like her."

"More than me?" I pouted.

"No, not more than you," Trevor smiled.

"Hey Chris, while you're here, can you look at my garbage disposal? It's making a weird noise," I added.

"Seriously, don't you have a super? Every time I come over here, you ask me to fix something or move something," Chris complained.

"Well, maybe if you were such a perfect specimen of a big, strong man, you wouldn't be asked as much," I shot.

"Oh, Ana, flattery will get you everywhere," Chris smiled as he tapped lipstick on and backed away to assess my face. "Trevor, take note. That's how you get my help." He nodded before turning to leave. "Where are your tools?" He called over his shoulder.

"Um, wherever you left them the last time you fixed something?" I guessed.

Chris responded with a groan as he continued to head to the kitchen.

"So, how are things with you two?" I prodded, as we moved to my bedroom.

"Good," but a sly smile crossed his face.

"That looks better than good," I teased.

Trevor reached into his pocket and pulled out a ring box.

"No," my eyes gleamed.

"Do you think he'll say yes? I mean, I'm me, and he's so..."

"Perfect for you?" I finished. "That man loves you! Of course, he'll say yes! When? Where? How?" I prodded.

"I know it's cheesy, but I was planning on Christmas Eve. He loves Christmas so much, so... what do you think?"

"Yes. He's so going to say yes. How?"

"So, we watch It's a Wonderful Life, as you know... and then when you leave, we do our stockings. I thought of putting the box in the toe but not the ring. So, he pops it open, but it's empty. Then when he looks up to tell me I forgot the ring... I'm on one knee."

"If your soon-to-be fiancé hadn't just done my eyes, I'd be crying right now," I acknowledged.

"Respectable non-cry," Trevor agreed.

"I don't have to come for It's a Wonderful Life; it should be just the two of you."

"What? No! You have to come. If you don't, he'll get suspicious!"

"Mmhmm, that's probably fair. I can't believe you're getting married. You're so old!"

"Wow, that was so mean. Now, tell me... the boy," he poked again.

"It's going really well," I smiled. "I like him so much!"

"Aw, you're so cute when you have a crush."

"There's some baggage, but I think he's worth it," I admitted.

"Um, you all are already at the baggage stage? That feels..."

"I know, I know; it's not the best timing, but it's working for us."

"Seriously though, have you..." Trevor led.

"Just some PG-13 kissing. We've only been on one, maybe two dates."

"Maybe two dates?" Trevor questioned.

"Well, we had the moving date yesterday, and then last night he came back, and we watched less of a movie together," I giggled.

"Yeah, you did! I'm so proud of you," Trevor smiled.

"What are we proud of?" Chris asked as he returned to the room to inspect my outfit. "Cute," he added with a nod.

"Nathan and I watched a second movie last night... well, kind of watched," I smiled.

"Oh, so send me off to fix the plumbing, and then you start to spill. I see how it is," Chris whined.

"That was all the juice, I promise," I soothed.

"See what happens if you are a big, strong man?" Trevor teased. "You miss all the gossip. Now, come on. I've been to the gym five times this week and want some French toast."

"Honey, going to the café in the gym lobby for a smoothie is not going to the gym," Chris teased.

"Agree to disagree," Trevor dismissed.
