Chapter I
Math. The most boring subject in school and we were forced to learn about derivatives and other shit we might need. I spaced out, not paying attention to the teacher and instead to the sketch I'd drawn in place of my notes on logarithms. Why I'd taken calculus (more like calkillus,if you ask me), I have no clue. Maybe because when I'd created my schedule, I had no clue as to what I was gonna do after high school.Yeah, that was it. But now, knowing I want to go into the art field, maybe as a tattoo artist, I didn't need calculus.
Anywho, I was sketching in my notes when it happened. One millisecond, I had normal vision. The next, well, not so much. In the blink of an eye –literally – my vision had gone negative. Blinking rapidly to try to get rid of the darker side of life, nothing happened, and I placed my forehead on the desk. My head spun, and I closed my eyes, keeping my head down for a few moments. When I pulled my head back up, I locked eyes with my best friend, Max. He furrowed his brows in a concerned way, watching me carefully. I shook my head, biting my lip harshly.Maybe pain would bring my regular sight back, not this doubled crap.No dice.
The ringing of the bell brought me out of my thoughts, and I hurriedly stuffed my notebook into my backpack, standing as I swung my bag up onto my back. Walking towards the door, Max pulled me back by the hood of my sweatshirt.
"Kris, are you okay?" My eyes took a second to focus, meeting his bright green eyes. His bright blue hair seemed iridescent in the negative sight, before I shook my head.
"I'm fine, Max. Just a little headache." He gave me a skeptical look before releasing my hood, letting me walk downstairs and out the front doors. He followed me to my truck, sliding in as I did the same. I started her up, plugging my phone into the into the aux cord.I selected my Hamilton playlist (amazingly titled A.Ham), letting Say No to This play from the speakers. Max smiled, rolling his eyes as he sang Alex's part, leaving Maria's to me.
I pulled out of the parking lot, singing along to the music coming from the stereo. The countryside rolled outside the windows, fields of grain and corn waving as we drove by.
After about a mile and a half, something jumped onto the road, leaving me no time to brake. The truck collided with the animal, leaving her to flip bed over nose. We skidded a few yards before rolling again, coming to a stop. I groaned in pain, glancing over at Max as he repeated the noise. My head pounded as blood poured into my vision.
"Fuck...Max? You alright?" He nodded, and I rested my head against the back of the seat, looking at my own body to check for damage. My left hand was crushed, and at the sight of it, I shrieked in shock and pain as I tried moving it. A wave of pain flew through my body and I blacked out from it.
