S3C Chapter 50: Grand Festivities

50 Chapters already and a whole Splatoon game once again finished. And it hasn't even been a year since I returned to writing this story. It feels like it's been longer as if this couldn't have all happened in such a short amount of time. I've so thoroughly enjoyed being back here, and every comment that gives me the strength to type each next word of this story. I can't thank you all enough. These games, this story, and all of you make me so happy. I hope I can give out even a fraction of the feeling it all gives me as a thanks for it all.

This chapter ended up a bit of a longer chapter, which for once, I am completely happy and didn't hate how distracted I got during it. At some point, I just locked in for it and managed to finish it tonight. It's not the ending of this story, nor is this the start of a hiatus. But it still feels like a momentous chapter, and I'm happy to be giving it out for all of you to (hopefully) enjoy. I'll have the next one out relatively soon. Thanks!

(Y/N) POV

(Y/N) watched from the tinted windows of the bus as the seven idols got off the bus and were already being crowded by fans despite the Grand Festival not having many people attending yet.

The seven of them posed for some pictures and autographed some items, Shiver attempting to charge people before Marie stopped her.

Once that was all done, the crowd dispersed, happy to have gotten to see the idols but also excited to see the Grand Festival, just as they all were.

With the crowd now gone, (Y/N) took that as his cue to leave the bus, not wanting to photo-bomb all the fans' pictures of the celebrities.

Shiver POV

Shiver was getting lightly scolded by Marie still for trying to solicit money for the pictures, but Shiver was just using her hand behind her fan to mimic a yapping mouth, which Frye giggled at the sight of.

(Y/N): At least the only people here so far seem to mostly be the people who already had tents set up for the event. Otherwise, that probably would've gone on longer.

Marie: We would've just told them no more if it came down to it.

Marina: But it's so hard to tell the fans no.

Pearl: We'll be here for three days, yo. They've got plenty of chances to get any autographs they want. But we ain't got as much time to check this place out in our free time without gettin' mobbed.

Frye: Speakin' o' which, what're we waiting for?

Shiver smirked, seeing her opportunity.

Shiver: It'd be better if we all split up. That way, we don't get swarmed as much by being in such a noticeable group.

Shiver offered the idea.

Shiver: So, how about we split up into idol groups, and I guess we'll just also take (Y/N) while we're at it.

Shiver smiled, confidently in her plan before she looked around for (Y/N), but not seeing him.

Shiver: (Y/N)? Where is he?

Marina: Callie started running off with him a minute ago with Marie following along after them.

Pearl: Wha- Marina?! Why didn't you say anything?!

Marina shrugged.

Marina: I thought it'd be fine to let them have him first. You and I can explore the festival on our own first, Pearlie!

Pearl sighed.

Pearl: Fine. We'll get him next.

Pearl said, walking off with her arms crossed on the back of her head, walking away with Marina.

Shiver: We didn't agree to this order!

Big Man: Ay. (They're already gone.)

Shiver: We can see that, Big Man.

Frye: Can we go check out the food stands?

Shiver looked over at Frye and Big Man who looked like they were happy to go see what foods were going to be getting sold here.

Shiver: Fine.

Shiver said, leading the trio toward the food stands.

(Y/N) POV

Callie finally slowed down and turned to (Y/N).

Callie: Okay, now that we're alone-

Marie: -I'm still here.

Marie said, standing right beside the two.

Callie: Now that we're alone, why don't we-

Marie lightly smacked Callie on the head.

Marie: Don't pretend like I'm not here.

Callie: Fine, you can be with us too, Marie. The classic group together again!

Marie: That's more like it. It's best if I supervise your actions here regardless.

Callie: I wouldn't have done anything bad... on purpose.

Marie: And I'll make sure of that.

(Y/N): Then what is it you wanted to do first, Callie?

Callie: I, uh, didn't think that far ahead. I was just heading off in a direction.

Callie said with a nervous laugh.

Marie: I guess I'm leading the way then.

Marie said, casually taking on her role as the chaperone.

Marie led the way over toward a stand that was being set up.

Marie: Let's make our way down this row and see what we can find.

Callie: Looks like the merchandise stands. My favorite!

(Y/N): I thought the food stands would be your favorite.

Callie: Ooooh, that's also a good option. Marie, how long until we get to the food stands?

Marie looked around.

Marie: I think they're on the other side of the venue.

Callie: Aw, dang it. Can't we do those first?

Marie: Nope. You can fill up on food later. That way you hopefully won't get hungry in the middle of a performance.

Callie looked sorrowful at being told to wait for food.

(Y/N): Why don't we get started then so we can get over there quicker?

Marie: Look, Callie, this stand even has your favorite band's albums on sale.

Callie: Really?!

Callie rushed up beside Marie but frowned upon seeing the album.

Callie: Marie, this is your favorite band.

Marie: Oh, is it? I guess I'll get it anyway. But something you like might be around here still.

Marie said, smirking at Callie's puffed-up cheeks.

Marie turned to the person seemingly running the stand.

Marie: How much for thi-

Marie cut herself off as she stared right at the man running the stand, not a single word going between them for a few moments.

Octavio: Hey.

Callie: Octavio?! You're running a stand here?

Callie asked, excitedly.

Marie: They let you run a stand here?

Marie asked, expressionless.

Octavio: How else am I supposed to get my music out there? Besides, this wasn't entirely my idea anyway.

Marie: Who-

Cuttlefish: Oh, you girls are here!

Cuttlefish said, floating up alongside Octavio.

Callie & Marie: Gramps?!

Cuttlefish: Yep, it's me. Gramps.

Cuttlefish chuckled upon seeing his grandchildren's reactions.

Cuttlefish: They let me run a stand for the Grand Festival! I also dug out this old man to help me with it.

Octavio: And with you two being some of the first to show up, I'm beginning to regret accepting.

(Y/N): You three actually.

Octavio turned and noticed (Y/N).

Octavio: Now I'm definitely regretting.

(Y/N): Been a while, Octavio.

(Y/N) said casually.

(Y/N): You're not planning on hypnotizing anyone here?

Callie: (Y/N), Octavio doesn't do that anymore.

Octavio: I could make an exception. I could make him tolerable to be around if given the chance.

Octavio said, referring to (Y/N).

Cuttlefish: Oh, settle down, you grumpy old man. Agent 4's a fine, talented youth.

Cuttlefish said to Octavio before turning to (Y/N).

Cuttlefish: Speaking of which, are you ready to put those skills to work? Have you got a Grand Festival T-shirt yet? We're the ones handing them out.

(Y/N): Oh, uh, not yet. Hehe.

Marie: He's still undecided.

Octavio scoffed at that.

Cuttlefish: Well, whenever you've got it all figured out, run on back here. You don't wanna miss out on an event this grand.

Marie: Good pun, Gramps.

Cuttlefish: What pun?

Cuttlefish asked confusedly.

Marie: Nevermind.

Cuttlefish: We'll also be ready to see you perform right here from the stand whenever you play on the Urchin Stage.

Marie: That's good. I was worried about you having to go into the crowd.

Callie: But we won't be playing on the Urchin Stage for a while. I think Off the Hook is headlining there first.

Cuttlefish: Well, I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, I can wait.

Callie: We'll do our best just for you, Gramps!

Marie: Yeah, we'll make the wait worth it.

Cuttlefish: Aw, thank you, girls.

Marie: Well, we'll let you two get back to it.

Marie stated, catching Callie's attention that they were going to be moving on.

Callie grabbed (Y/N)'s hand and with the other free hand waved to Cuttlefish and Octavio.

Octavio POV

Octavio watched Agent 4 as he was dragged off by the cheerful Squid Sisters and her snarky cousin.

Octavio wouldn't admit it, but he was glad that Agent 4 seemed to be doing better than he had last seen him. Better yet, Agent 4 seemed to feel too awkward around Octavio because of their last interaction, so hopefully, Octavio doesn't have to put up with him ever again.

Octavio smirked to himself that the annoying Inkling wouldn't be a bother to him.

Octavio's thoughts were cut off by Cuttlefish chuckling.

Octavio: What're you laughing about?

Cuttlefish: Don't tell them I told you this. It's a big secret.

Octavio was interested in the sound of this, believing he could use whatever this old fool would tell him to mess with others using this special information.

Cuttlefish: I'm pretty sure my granddaughters have a crush on Agent 4.

Cuttlefish said with a cheeky smile while Octavio looked at Cuttlefish like he was an idiot.

Octavio: Un. Believable...

Cuttlefish: I'm almost positive, but because I'm their grandfather, I can tell these sorts of things.

Octavio continued to stare at Cuttlefish, who Octavio was sure was an idiot now.

~~~
(Y/N) POV
(Y/N) was lost in thought as Callie snapped her fingers in front of his face to get his attention.
(Y/N) looked over at the two Squid Sisters.
Marie: Now he's back with us.
Callie: What's wrong, (Y/N)?
(Y/N): I'm just having some trouble... thinking about the Splatfest.
Callie: Ah, I see what's the issue...
(Y/N) and Marie both looked to Callie, surprised she understood what (Y/N) was talking about so quickly.
Callie: You're struggling to think of what weapon to use, aren't you!?
(Y/N) and Marie both realized they misjudged her.
Callie: Well, I can help with that! Leave it to my good luck charm!
Callie said cheerfully.
Callie: Hamana hamana ugi ugi zip zow zoo-!
(Y/N): -Callie, hold up, that's not it.
He cut her off, causing her to look at him confused.
(Y/N): I meant, I was just struggling to think of which Splatfest team to choose.
Callie: OOOooooh.
Callie now realized what he was getting at, causing Marie to shake her head.
Marie: What's the problem?
(Y/N): I just can't think of which option I think is the most important is all.
Marie: Would it help to hear why we chose Team Past? I don't want to sound like we're pushing you to join our team, but if it helps-
(Y/N): -Yes, please! Just, getting an idea of why others chose their team might help.
(Y/N) desperately cut Marie off to accept her offer.
Marie: Well... I'm not sure how well I speak for Callie exactly, but...
Callie excitedly bobbed back and forth as she listened to what her cousin was going to give as an answer.
Marie: I just, like the past. Looking at how far I've come, and happy that all of our dreams came true. For the most part. It wasn't easy to become world-famous idols either. We're not natural geniuses like Pearl and Marina are. We worked our way from the bottom and did everything we wanted thanks to everything we did in the past.
Marie smiled but was a bit embarrassed by her statement.
Callie: Marie mostly hit how I feel on the head.
Callie said, sticking her tongue out goofily as Marie and (Y/N) both turned to her next.
Callie: Everything I love started in the past. Meeting everyone I care about? Happened in the past. Without those moments, my life could've been totally different. And replaying those moments in my head makes me happy to see where it all started.
Callie stood back up straight and latched herself around (Y/N).
Callie: The past is where we met and became friends. It's where you saved me, and where all of our best moments can be replayed in my mind happily as many times as I want.
Callie said with her eyes closed, reminiscing on the time that can't be returned to, but can be reflected upon.
Callie then jumpily backed off from (Y/N) and turned to Marie.
Callie: And you too, obviously, Marie! And all the others. Hehe.
Callie clarified, realizing she focused too much on (Y/N) for a moment, letting her feelings get the better of her, which did put a smile on (Y/N)'s face that he was embarrassed by her doing it in public like this.
Marie meanwhile found it less enjoyable.
Marie: I can sure tell how much I matter to you, huh?
Callie: Don't be like that, Marie! You know what I meant! I wouldn't trade you for anything in the whole, wide world!
Marie put her sour face away and returned the smile to it.
Marie: I know, Callie. I'd never let anything come between us either.
Callie's puffed-up cheeks went away and gained a smile again too.
Callie: You mess with me too much, Marie.
Marie: I always have, and I'll never stop either.
The two chuckled as Marie, followed by Callie, turned back to (Y/N).
Marie: Well? Did that help at all?
(Y/N): Yeah... I think it does.
(Y/N) was smiling, understanding for them it was all about reflection.
(Y/N): But...
Marie: You want to hear what the others have to say too, don't you?
(Y/N) rubbed the back of his head with a smile, having been caught red-handed.
(Y/N): Yeah...
Marie shook her head with a smile.
Marie: We've been looking at a bunch of these stands already. How about you go find Pearl and Marina and make sure those two aren't getting carried away?
Callie and (Y/N) both looked at Marie.
(Y/N): Are you sure?
Marie: Yeah, we'll have more time to enjoy the festival together later.
(Y/N) smiled.
(Y/N): Thanks, Marie.
(Y/N) started walking off to find the Inkling-Octoling duo.
(Y/N): I'll talk to you two later! And I'll watch you two perform later too!
Marie POV
Marie waved him off while Callie looked a bit upset at Marie.
Marie: What's wrong, Callie?
Marie asked without even looking over at her.
Callie: You just let him leave us like that?
Marie: You could've stopped him if you wanted.
Callie: Yeah, but...
Marie waited to hear what Callie would say as she turned to Callie.
Callie: It'd be rude to hog him to myself the entire time...
Marie smiled at her cousin as she turned to walk farther down the rows of festival stands.
Marie: I thought you could enjoy your past memories of him just fine.
Callie: Yeah, but... I wanted to make more memories here...
Marie: Don't worry, Callie. We'll all be able to make plenty more splatastic memories together at this festival. There's more than enough time to do everything you want here.
Callie shook herself back to sense as she smiled at her cousin, running up alongside her and grabbing her hand.
Callie: I know. And if not, I know you'll always make sure I get what I want anyway!
Marie: I spoil you too much.
The two giggled as they saw more of what the festival had in store for them together.
~~~

(Y/N) POV

(Y/N) was walking through the festival stands that had people happily playing games to win prizes. In doing so, he started to hear a bit of a commotion, to which he was sure he already could recognize the voice.

Pearl: Yo, just come on. I'll literally pay for that stuffed animal at this point.

(Y/N) could now see Marina standing there, embarrassedly holding a prize she won while Pearl was arguing with the stand owner about how rigged the game was.

(Y/N) could infer well enough of the situation and just simply walked up alongside them, and then he placed a hand on Pearl's shoulder and started trying to walk her away with Marina following alongside them.

(Y/N): Let's move along.

Marina was relieved (Y/N) had shown up to stop Pearl.

Pearl: I ain't got my prize yet!

(Y/N): We'll get you something later.

He said, stopping her from trying to walk back to the stand, keeping her moving along with him and Marina.

Marina and (Y/N) got Pearl to calm down.

Pearl: I hate these games. They're completely unfair.

(Y/N): I know.

Pearl: They're just made to rip you off, but they also won't let me just buy the reward for a huge price!

(Y/N): I know.

Pearl: The only thing that's good about them is that at least they put the stand at a good height to be able to play them where I'm right at the perfect height.

Marina: Well, they are made for children after all.

Pearl snapped her head over to Marina, but before Pearl could say anything, Marina spoke up.

Marina: So, what're you doing over here with us, (Y/N)?

(Y/N): Nothing, I had just been checking out the stands over there with Callie and Marie enough and wanted to see what you two were up to.

Pearl: We're waiting on Eight and our other friend to get here, yo.

Marina: We've just been playing the games here in the meantime.

(Y/N): Are they gonna get here soon?

Marina: They should be here soon enough. Was there anything interesting over at the stands you were at?

(Y/N): Yes, actually, now that you mention it, you'll never guess who's here.

Marina: Ooh, is it a musician?

(Y/N): Sorta, yeah, actually.

Pearl: Yo, who we talkin'? Damp Socks? Chirpy Chips? Quit the suspense and spit it out already.

(Y/N): Well, it was Octavio. He's running a merch stand and handing out the Splatfest tees and wristbands with Cuttlefish.

Marina's excited expression changed to a shocked expression, while Pearl just raised an eyebrow, slightly confused.

Marina: He's doing that?

Pearl: Yo, they lettin' that old octo jerk in here?

Marina: That certainly is someone I wouldn't have guessed. I'm surprised he was even willing to do that. Especially doing it alongside Cuttlefish.

Pearl: Yeah, don't those two have some old beef or something like that?

Marina: That's putting it lightly. But I guess even he can't fight change.

(Y/N): Yeah. Speaking of them handing out Splatfest tees, I actually wanted to hear your two's thoughts on something.

The two both looked over, interested in what he wanted to ask them.

(Y/N): I already did the same for Callie and Marie, but I wanted to hear your two's reasonings for choosing Team Present. I still need to pick a team, and I was hoping that hearing everyone's reasons for picking their teams would help me make a decision.

Marina: Oh, I can explain that easily.

Marina said, gently handing over the large prize she won to Pearl for her to hold onto it for her, making Pearl look annoyed at both having to hold it and be reminded that she didn't win anything.

Marina: I just feel like the life I'm living now is my best life!

Marina said so casually.

Marina: Whenever I stop and look around at what's going on, I always feel like "there's no way it gets better than this". The past doesn't matter, the future could be anything, but the present is wonderful and all around you. My past wasn't the happiest it could've been, and the future is scary to think about what could go wrong, but as long as I do my best to make the present what I want of it, then I'll never have any regrets!

(Y/N) nodded, understanding her reasonings, knowing how she's always been. He knew she was stuck underground for most of her life, and she was always a happy person, but even during the Final Fest years ago, she was worried that one day Off the Hook would be done. He knows Marina cherishes her life and every part of it deeply.

Pearl: Marina gets it. But Marina worries too much about the others. Me? I just don't care about either. Do whatever you want now. Want an awesome future? Be awesome in the present and it'll never be a problem. And don't let the past hold you back.

(Y/N): I guess I should have expected an answer like that from the Princess of Chaos.

(Y/N) chuckled as Pearl looked smug, enjoying her chaotic title.

Marina: I hope we helped.

(Y/N): Yeah, that was plenty.

He smiled, glad he had his friends could make him understand that for them it was all about not being burdened by expectations and just doing what you know is right.

(Y/N): Then I guess I'm fine now to tell you that over there's also merch stands with tons of merch for each of you seven. They're cashing in on the big money makers.

Pearl: Of course, who wouldn't want a piece of us?

Pearl said, smugly talking as if she was looking down on everyone else.

Marina meanwhile was getting giddy at the thought.

Marina: Can we go over there right now?

She asked excitedly, looking back at the other two as she already nearly walked off without them in the direction of the merchandise stands.

(Y/N) and Pearl both looked at each other, laughed at Marina's behavior, and then agreed.

However, Marina's phone notification went off just then, causing her to check it out.

Marina: Oh- Ugh. Of course just now.

Marina looked back up at the other two.

Marina: Eight and Acht are both here. Pearl, can you take (Y/N) to our tent by the Urchin Stage? They'll meet us there. I just want to do a small look at the merchandise of us first.

Pearl: Yo, I got it, 'Rina. Go have fun on a spending spree.

Marina: Thank you, I'll catch up with you two soon! It'll only be a quick looksie at the merch!

She said as she made her way toward the merchandise stands.

Meanwhile, Pearl and (Y/N) casually made their way toward the tent.

(Y/N): So, I'm guessing "Acht" is this other friend you two mentioned?

Pearl looked confused before realizing the situation.

Pearl: Huh? Oh yeah, you haven't met each other yet. Don't worry. Acht is basically one of us. She's cool, you'll see, yo.

(Y/N): If you're saying that, it's high praise. I have to believe it.

Pearl: Yeah, you get it.

She said smirking while walking in a way where she tried to look big and tough, causing (Y/N) to laugh at it before she shoved him playfully.

As they approached the tent, (Y/N) and Pearl recognized Veronica and (who (Y/N) assumed to be) Acht sitting at the table in the tent.

Acht: This is definitely Marina's laptop. This is the right place.

Veronica: Okay. I am just making sure. But why would she just leave this sitting here?

Acht: I don't think anyone can just walk on into this tent without permission.

Pearl: Yo, what is up! It's ya girl, Pearl!

Veronica and Acht both turned around and greeted Pearl.

While Veronica was hugging Pearl, she noticed (Y/N) behind her.

Veronica: (Y/N)!

Veronica let go of Pearl and walked up to (Y/N) while Pearl greeted Acht.

Veronica: How come you left with the others and not us this morning?

(Y/N): They offered, and I wanted to see what the inside of a tour bus was like.

Veronica: OOOoooh. Yes, it is very cool indeed! Did you like it?

(Y/N): I loved it. I'm glad you're here though now.

Veronica: Have you met Acht yet?

(Y/N) shook his head as Veronica grabbed his hand and dragged him over to Pearl and Acht, allowing Acht and (Y/N) to look at each other.

The two both had their eyes go wide as they just stared at each other for a few moments.

Pearl: Acht's a musician just like us. You ever heard of Dedf1sh before?

Veronica: Her music is amazing!

Acht looked embarrassed as she rubbed her arm, remembering the awkward moment she made between them a few days ago.

(Y/N): It's... nice to meet you, Acht.

Acht: Mm.

Acht said while giving a light nod and trying to look away.

Veronica: Acht is a bit shy. I am sure you two can be good friends though.

(Y/N) just smiled at Veronica's kindness, not wanting to bring up the awkward moment that happened right now, even if he was curious about what she was doing the other day.

Veronica: So, where is Marina at?

Pearl: Marina wanted to hit up the merch stands with all of the merch of us.

Acht: Of course she did.

Pearl: She'll be here soon enough, no worries.

Veronica: Can (Y/N) and I use her laptop until she gets here?

Acht: Aren't you supposed to ask the person who owns i-

Pearl just shrugged.

Pearl: Yeah, Marina probably wouldn't mind.

Acht was going to speak up again but was still too quiet to be heard before Veronica spoke up.

Veronica: Thank you, Pearl!

Veronica brought (Y/N) over to the laptop and started using it to show (Y/N) some things she wanted him to see.

Acht just gave up trying to reason with them.

(Y/N) was enjoying seeing how Veronica had actually researched plenty about the Grand Festival and wanted to show him her idea of the best parts to go to and check out.

(Y/N): You put a lot of effort into scouting this place out, didn't you, Veronica?

Veronica nodded at him.

Veronica: I was so excited for today. I checked every official update Deep Cut did, along with every unofficial one!

(Y/N): What unofficial ones?

Veronica: I did a bribery! :D

(Y/N) was a little shocked by her answer.

(Y/N): Yeah, that'll do it. Especially since you're on their team.

Veronica: Maybe.

She smiled.

(Y/N) thought about it for a moment.

(Y/N): Speaking of which. Why did you choose Team Future, Veronica?

Veronica thought about it for a moment with her finger to her chin before she smiled at him.

Veronica: Because I have a dream future I'm willing to fight for.

(Y/N): That's it?

Veronica nodded.

Veronica: Mhm. My life improved about a bazillion percent already once before. Why not be happy thinking that is not just a once-in-a-lifetime thing?

(Y/N): That's so you, Veronica. You always can make me smile.

He said, smiling at her, causing her to feel happy to have answered his question.

Acht: You always have to hope that things can get better in the future. Otherwise, bad times will kick you down a lot harder.

Acht said casually, having listened in to their conversation from the tent entrance.

(Y/N) and Veronica stared at her, causing Acht to get embarrassed again, realizing she butted into others conversations.

(Y/N) and Veronica giggled as Acht turned away, facing outside of the tent again.

(Y/N): Yeah, you're right. She seems pretty cool.

Veronica: I told you so.

(Y/N): Then, if you don't mind, I'll leave you three ladies be while I go off somewhere.

He said as he made his way to the entrance of the tent.

Veronica: Where are you going? I wanted to spend more time with you at the festival.

(Y/N): We'll spend a lot more time together for the festival, I promise. I just want to go see the others before they have to go on stage and this place gets more packed.

Veronica: That is fair... Okay, but we are going to watch the shows together later too!

(Y/N): Sounds like a plan.

He said smiling as he turned around, nearly bumping into Marina.

(Y/N): Oh, my bad, Marina, I didn't-

He cut himself off as he, Acht, Veronica, and Pearl all saw her holding as much Pearl merch as possible.

Veronica: Whoa! That all looks so cool!

Acht: Why am I not surprised?

Pearl: Just a quick look at the merch stands, huh?

Marina: This was all I could carry! There's so much more to get, I just had to choose which to get first while I was there, so I tried to get as much of the Pearl merchandise as I could! Look at it! I mean, you've got the Pearl fan, the little tiny Pearl standup cutout, THE PEARL PLUSH! And they had more of all of us. Come on, you all have to admit, this stuff is adorable!

They were all silent, staring at Marina.

(Y/N): The plush is really cute, I can not lie.

~~~
(Y/N) walked around the food stands, sure that the bandit trio couldn't be too far. His knowledge of the three proved correct when he saw sitting nearby were the three of them.
Big Man was relaxing as if he just was worried about something, Frye was looking proud of herself for some reason, and Shiver was counting money. (Y/N) was sure something that was no good must've happened here.
(Y/N): Do I have to ask what happened?
Shiver: Oh, hey yoooouuu. Check out all this cash I just made.
(Y/N): Did you get this money legitimately?
Shiver pretended to look insulted.
Shiver: Of course I di- wait, what's your stance on gambling?
Big Man: Ayyy. Ayy. Ayy. (Frye proved she could eat faster than one of those robot chefs from ROBO Rom-en that were brought here could cook. Shiver took bets from people watching on who they thought would win. The robot chef shortcircuited because it couldn't keep up with her.)
Frye: Fastest meal you can find? Yeah right. I was picking my teeth in between dishes it was taking so long.
Big Man: Ay. (I've never seen a robot nervously sweat before.)
(Y/N): Huh. That does explain why those jellyfish repairmen are fiddling with the robot over there nervously.
Shiver: So, finally come to hang out with the best of us over here?
(Y/N): Sure did. I wanted to catch you three before you had to go on stage. It's been a little while since you three have had enough free time for us to hang out together.
Frye: Tell me about it. I'm sure this Grand Festival is going to be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, but the work we had to put in before now has been a bit exhausting.
Shiver: Yeah, it makes me feel like Big Man with how much extra work we had to do.
(Y/N): I wonder whose fault it is that Big Man has to do a lot of work all the time.
Big Man: Ay, ay. (I have to say though, I did like dressing up all fancy for it.)
Shiver and Frye both nodded in agreement affirmatively.
Shiver: And hopefully it served as a good call-to-arms for our Team Future minions.
(Y/N): You mean supporters?
Shiver: Hm? Oh, yeah, yes, of course. That.
(Y/N): Since you brought up Team Future. Do you mind telling me the reason you three chose Team Future?
Shiver: Ah, you need some convincing to join our winning team, huh?
(Y/N): Not really "convincing" more just-
Frye: Ah, don't worry, we understand ya. Don't want the others to hear you say it. Nothing that could be held against you in a court of law.
(Y/N): I don't think any of this could be relevantly brought up in a courtroom.
Frye: That's always how they get you, that unguarded way of thinking!
(Y/N): Anyway, can you three tell me?
The trio looked at each other for a few moments before turning back to him with fierce smiles on all three of their faces.
Shiver & Frye: The future is so exciting!
Big Man: Ay! (The future is so exciting!)
Shiver: The present can be so boring with all of the complacency.
Big Man: Ayy. (And the past just set us on our way, but it is over and done with.)
Frye: But the future..? Everything you've yet to do and experience is there!
(Y/N) listened as the three had a much more convincing argument than he expected from the three of them.
Frye: So much where no one has ever been, and we'll be the first there to meet whatever is waiting for us head-on.
Shiver: In the future, we'll come across a bigger and badder threat than ever, and that's what I live for, waiting for us to take them down.
Big Man: Ay, ay! (As long as we're together, we can do anything!)
Frye: No one can match up against all of us together.
Shiver: So, we'll take it on together.
Frye: Just think about it. What's out there? Farther out than either of these two lands of ours!
Shiver: You crawled out of that dump called Inkopolis across a desert and found this awesome city of ours.
Big Man: Ayy. Ay, ay! (And the desert goes on even farther than the Splatlands. Who knows what other awesome, unbelievable things are out there!)
Shiver: And together, we're going to see where it all ends up.
(Y/N) smiled at their speech that he was absolutely positive they had practiced beforehand.
(Y/N): I see, for you three it's all about chasing the thrill with you three together.
Frye: Hold on, bub. Who said three?
(Y/N) was caught off guard.
Shiver: I said we'd do it together. You're not getting away from us that easily.
Big Man: Ay! Ay. Ay! (You signed away your rights when we saved you in the desert! You're our friend now. Forever!)
(Y/N) was caught off guard by his inclusion with them, but smiled, feeling like he was nearly holding back a tear at seeing how much the three care about him.
(Y/N): How could I say no to that then? I'd be more than happy to be right beside you all for any adventure you want to experience.
Big Man and Frye both hugged (Y/N) causing him to hug the two back.
Shiver rolled her eyes before smirking and joining in on the group hug together. She was disappointed she didn't feel a wallet in (Y/N)'s pocket right now, but she decided to enjoy the moment, regardless, because she had her three dearest friends with her right now.
(Y/N) thought on their words and realized for them it was about not knowing what could happen next in the future, but knowing that as long as their friends are together, they'll always be ready to take on anything and turn it into the time of their life.
However, the hug ended as Shiver noticed the time, pushed away from the hug with a slight blush, and cleared her throat.
Shiver: Would you look at the time? We've got to get ready for our performance soon.
Big Man: Ay! AY! (Oh no! WE'RE GONNA BE LATE!)
Big Man spoke "calmly".
Frye: Relax, Big Man. We'll make it. But we do have to go get changed and prepped for the show. We'll see ya.
Frye said with a wave, followed by the other two, and the three started walking away as (Y/N) turned back, now sitting alone.
(Y/N) sighed now, left to think about it all by himself.
At least he was until he nearly got steamrolled by the three coming back and nearly tackling him with another hug.
Frye: One last go before the show!
(Y/N) was surprised by suddenly getting jumped by the trio when he thought they had left, but he just laughed and took it in stride.
(Y/N) was walking around on his own currently, enjoying going between the stages and watching the performances while trying to think about what everyone had told him so far to help him understand the reasons to choose each team.
He was cut off however when he got hit on the head by an empty cup dropping on his head.
(Y/N): What the-?
He rubbed his head as he looked up and saw a pair of legs dangling over the side of the scaffolding above him.
He was confused as to who was up there, so he looked around and noticed the ramp in the scaffolding that leads right up there.
(Y/N) made his way up to the litterbug, which is where he realized he knew this litterbug.
Eva: Aha, what's up? Was wonderin' when you were goin' ta show up!
(Y/N) shook his head and made his way over beside her.
(Y/N): What're you doing up here?
Eva: What's it look like? I'm enjoying the show! And I'm takin' some sweet pics and videos while I'm at it thanks to this nifty camera someone left up here.
(Y/N): Do you know who that camera belongs to?
Eva shrugged.
(Y/N): I thought so.
He sat down beside her, choosing to enjoy the show with her as it was actually some really good seats.
Eva: That's the spirit. They want you to pay for those V.I.P. seats down there, but this up here is perfectly free and not even crowded either. What're the odds?
(Y/N): I don't think they fully expected people to be walking around here in scaffolding casually.
Eva: Someone had to. Otherwise, who would've left the camera?
(Y/N) was going to retort, but couldn't think of what to say, so he just chuckled.
(Y/N): You've got me there.
Eva looked (Y/N) up and down out of the corner of her eye, taking notice of his appearance.
Eva: Still haven't picked up a Splatfest tee from the old guys?
(Y/N) smiled.
(Y/N): Not yet. I asked all the others why they chose their teams, hoping to get a better idea of why I should choose each team.
Eva scoffed.
Eva: How did that go?
(Y/N): It helped, sort of.
Eva: If it helped, you would have a Splatfest tee on right now. I bet they all gave you some long-winded reasons why.
(Y/N): You don't have a reason why you chose Team Present?
Eva: I do. I have the best reason.
(Y/N): Do enlighten me.
Eva: Easy. Because I wanted to.
(Y/N): That's it?
Eva: That's it. What more is there? Worry about the past? Who cares, been there, done that. Future? The future is always coming but never gets here. I'm just chillin' living my best life. Worrying about somethin' means you ain't doin' nothin'.
Liz: How insightful.
Liz said as she was now standing behind the two and placed a hand atop Eva's head.
Eva: Captain?! When did you get here?
Liz: Just a second ago.
Liz turned to (Y/N).
Liz: You busy?
(Y/N) turned to Eva who just gave him a thumbs up as she went back to munching on snacks and enjoying the show.
Eva: We'll hang out later. Ya don't wanna keep the Captain waiting, do ya?
(Y/N) smiled as he and Eva fist-bumped before (Y/N) followed alongside Liz.
Liz was leading (Y/N) into the big crowd in front of the stage.
Liz: Sounds like she was doing her best to try and help you out up there.
(Y/N): You mean telling me why she chose Team Present?
Liz: Yeah, but she wasn't just telling you a reason to go Team Present. She might have a bit of a crass attitude, but she's nice. She was trying to tell you to just stop worrying so much over the team choice.
(Y/N) had it click in his head now, thinking back on what Eva said to him. He hated how dense he was sometimes, but he at least tried to reason to himself that Eva wasn't being the most clear with that.
(Y/N): I guess I could use a bit less overthinking all of this. It's just- it's the Grand Festival. I want to make sure it'll be perfect.
Liz nodded, understanding the feeling, having now participated in three of these larger-than-life Splatfests.
(Y/N): I think you're the only one I haven't heard from yet. Care to tell me your reasoning, Miss Past?
Liz: Mine might not make the most sense.
(Y/N): I'm the king of not making sense.
Liz gave a slight laugh.
Liz: Understatement of the century.
(Y/N) shrugged playfully while Liz thought of what to say now.
Liz: I chose Team Past because I hate thinking back on the past.
(Y/N) cocked up an eyebrow, demanding Liz continue.
Liz: I told you it doesn't make the most sense, but it's just- I think back on the past and all I can think about is how many times I failed or messed something up.
(Y/N): But you must've done a lot of good things too.
Liz: Of course, but every bad memory is worth ten good memories. You'll remember them the most because you hate to think about it.
(Y/N): Then why choose Team Past?
Liz smiled.
Liz: As much as I might regret many things of the past, I'm glad those moments are a part of me. Without those mistakes, I wouldn't be me. Every mistake I made was a lesson to take forward to be a better and stronger person.
Liz gave a small smile as she kept speaking.
Liz: Don't be afraid to do something because you'll mess it up. Like Eva said, if you're too worried about something, you'll end up just not doing anything. Embrace your embarrassing mistakes, and make them a part of you. Because would you really want to focus so much on looking at the ground-
She said while motioning him to look down at the ground below him before she raised his head.
Liz: -when there are so many more interesting things in front of you to see?
She finished as she turned his head to look forward and see the amazing performance going on in front of them on the stage that they were now right in front of. The music, the lights, the special effects, pyrotechnics, the crowd, all of it.
(Y/N) was caught up so much in his own head that despite him being right here, following Liz right into the full crowd, he had been missing the amazing show the performers were putting on right now, giving their all for the Grand Festival.
He hadn't even noticed how big the smile on his face had grown until he turned to Liz and she laughed at his excited expression.
Liz: So... enjoy it all. Stop worrying.
His smile turned from one of excitement to a warm one as he stared in front of himself, right at Liz.
~~~

(Y/N) found himself walking up to the pledge box. He saw the three team choices available to him, thought about it for a moment as he looked between the three, and clicked the one he decided upon confidently with a smile.

He turned around and started walking toward the stand Cuttlefish and Octavio were running which was handing out the Splatfest T-shirts and wristbands.

Octavio noticed him first without (Y/N) even being close enough to hear Octavio, (Y/N) was sure Octavio just groaned upon seeing (Y/N)'s smiling face walking up.

Cuttlefish meanwhile got a more chipper vibe to him as he saw (Y/N) approaching.

However, just before reaching the stand, he stopped in his tracks as something didn't feel right, causing him to turn around to see all ten of his friends standing there. Luckily, they weren't being swarmed right now thanks to other bands currently performing on stage and catching the majority of the festival-goers that were currently at the Grand Festival Grounds.

The ten of them were all smiling with anticipation, not saying a word, which caused (Y/N) to give a laugh as if he had now become the performer for all ten of them.

(Y/N): Is something going on?

He asked coyly?

Veronica: We wanted to see which team you are choosing.

Pearl: We'll be fine with whichever one you choose, so don't worry 'bout us, yo.

Shiver: It'd be nice if you chose our team though.

Marie nudged Shiver with her elbow.

Callie: Have you chosen already?

(Y/N) smiled. The thing that truly allowed (Y/N) to finally choose his team choice for the Grand Festival was knowing that all of his friends would support his choice no matter what. Even if he couldn't play on their team or fight for their team, they were just happy to enjoy the celebration with him at all with him right there alongside him.

(Y/N) nodded.

(Y/N): Yep!

He cheerfully exclaimed, happy to finally be fully celebrating the Grand Festival right beside them all.

(Y/N) turned back to the stand and reached his hand up to grab the Splatfest T-shirt of the team he had chosen.
