S3C Chapter 29: What Once Was

Honestly, this was a much longer chapter than probably almost all others I've previously written. I'm not sure if I feel the most confident in it, but I feel with as many words I've put into it, I think I got all the ideas across that I wanted to with this one. There are parts I like and parts I don't, but I hope you can all enjoy it. Putting this chapter into words felt like a battle. And if I missed anything important because I spaced out at some point, I'M GOING TO FLIP.

Enjoy!

(Y/N) POV

(Y/N) sat facing the wall, despairing the predicament he was in.

He could feel the sleepy breathing of the pet Smallfry that rested against his back.

It brought him a bit of comfort, but not enough to reprieve himself of the painful feelings in his chest.

He lowered his vision to the two objects he had resting in front of his curled-up body on the bed between him and the bed.

Resting in front of him laid a smartphone and a flip phone.

The flip phone was the device he used as his primary device to stay in contact with his friends, but now contacting any of them was not a choice that was open to him.

His gaze shifted over to the smartphone, reminded of the similar situation that had befallen the device to lead to a similar lack of use.

Was this something always bound to repeat for him? Was he not meant to have people close to him?

Thinking back on the incident that had caused him to start over offered little solace.

~Flashback~

Elizabeth POV

SNAP!

Elizabeth was blinking her eyes after the bright flash, trying to get ahold of the situation that had just all been sprung on her.

She looked to her left to see (Y/N) with his arm around her and a big smile on his face looking in the direction where the flash had come from before turning to look at her still confused face.

Elizabeth looked over to the others of the Cap'n, the Squid Sisters, and Eight who had been waiting for the two to get here before looking back at the squid beside her.

(Y/N): Well? Are you surprised?

Elizabeth: This... isn't a prank, right?

Cuttlefish: Nope! I can't do this job forever, as can be noted by how much I get captured. I just needed someone that I trusted enough to give the reigns of the New Squidbeak Splatoon over to before I retired.

Elizabeth: What about Callie or Marie?

Callie: Girl, I don't have enough time to do this job. I'm far too busy with all of my acting and other important things.

Marie: I'm too busy and high-profile for this as well. I had my fill dealing with just that dunderhead.

(Y/N) snickered beside Elizabeth.

Elizabeth: But-

Cuttlefish: No buts! I've already got it all planned out how I'm going to spend my retirement too! Some nice time enjoying the beach and all.

Elizabeth was looking nervous, catching the old squid's attention.

Cuttlefish: I kid, mostly. I'll still be here to help you or guide you if you ever feel you need someone to talk to. But you're much more qualified for the position than I am at this point. There's no one better I could ask for to replace me.

(Y/N): And you can boss me around however you want, Captain!

Eight: I'd always be ready to help if you asked!

Callie: Us too!

Marie: I don't know about bossing me around, but I'll be there to help too.

Elizabeth let her face form a bit of a smirk at the five around her, praising her and supporting her before noticing Cuttlefish handing off his Cap of Legend.

She hesitated for a moment before reaching for it until (Y/N) snatched it and placed it on top of her head for her, embarrassing her.

She looked around at the others all smiling at her causing her to smile a big one as thanks to all of them for changing her life for the better.

(Y/N) POV

(Y/N) was waiting as the phone rang, nearly going to voicemail before being picked up.

Liz: What's up?

(Y/N): Hey, Liz, I just wanted to see what you were up to. I wanted to know if you wanted to go out and do some Turf War.

Liz: I'd love to, I would, but I'm just... busy with this work for the N.S.S.

(Y/N): Yeah, I get it. Just don't get too carried away. Let me know whenever you've got a break and we can hang out.

Liz chuckled.

Liz: That sounds nice. I will. See ya.

(Y/N): See ya.

He ended the call and sighed before walking out to the living room.

Veronica: Is she coming?

(Y/N): Naaah, she's doing some important work right now.

Veronica: Again? She's too much of a workaholic.

(Y/N) giggled at her remark.

(Y/N): Yeah, but she's got an important job. Besides, she did say she'd let me know next time she's free!

Veronica: That's nice, but I wanted her to come today...

(Y/N): What? Do you not enjoy being with me anymore?

Veronica: I do! It's just-

She saw him with a teasing smile and pinched him on the cheek.

Veronica: You know what I mean.

She said with a pout that caused him to laugh.

(Y/N): Yeah, I know. I miss her too... Now let's go or else I'm gonna use your food tickets for myself!

He said while making his way out the door.

Veronica: You wouldn't!

(Y/N): Wouldn't I?

She chased after him, grabbing his wrist to make sure he couldn't as they made their way to the Square.

~~~
(Y/N) was sitting next to Callie and across from Marie at the two's home.
Callie and him were fighting over the snacks in front of them.
Marie: You two wanna slow it down? This isn't a meal, it's just a little snack.
(Y/N) and Callie begrudgingly glared at each other as they both slowly grabbed one and took it for themselves.
Callie happily ate hers and as she stuck her tongue out at him, he put his snack in her mouth, causing her to smile and hug him.
Marie: As always, she's easy to win over.
Callie: You're just jealous.
(Y/N): So, what's been going on with you two recently?
Marie: Nothing much for me recently, but Callie-
Callie: -I got a new gig!
(Y/N): Ooh, do go on.
Callie: I got cast in a role for a big show! It pays well and I'm going to be the star!
Marie: We're so very happy that your ego is going to somehow get bigger.
Callie: You're just mad that I'm going to be a household name while you're still just doing podcasts.
Marie: I like my job, thank you very much. Besides, it gives me free time to still do what I want plenty of time. Now if only a certain Captain wasn't asking me to help out all the time...
(Y/N): You did say you'd be there to help her.
Callie: You did say that. I recorded it too!
Marie: I am glad to help, but that squid needs to learn to take it easy before I unionize.
(Y/N): Yeah, I haven't seen much of her in a while. Is she doing alright?
Marie: Besides working me to the bone? Yeah, she's doing well.
(Y/N): Well, that's good then... And you, Callie? What's this show you're going to be a part of?
Callie: I can't tell you. They made me sign an NDA...
(Y/N): Then just make sure to tell me as soon as possible, so your biggest fan can be ready to hype you up instantly.
Marie: Sorry, that position's already taken.
(Y/N): Rock, paper, scissors you for it.
The two started throwing out their fists to bob them up and down for the game before Callie stopped them.
Callie: I wouldn't be able to choose between you two (cough) (Y/N) (cough), you're both so important to me!
Marie: I heard that.
Callie: I'm kidding! You both can still be my biggest fans though.
(Y/N): Yeah, we can both share. Isn't that right, number two?
Marie: Sure is, second biggest fan.
The two eyed each other before laughing.
~~~

(Y/N): Thanks for coming out with me today.

Marie: You don't have to ask me twice. The captain's been working me too much, so I'm more than happy to hang out with you today instead.

(Y/N): Wow, I'm so happy to hear how much you care about me.

Marie: Yeah, I guess that's there too somewhere.

She said teasing him.

(Y/N): Too bad Callie couldn't come with us today though.

Marie: Oh, now who's not enjoying whose company?

(Y/N): Sorry, she's just more fun than you.

Marie: Excuse me?

(Y/N): Kidding. I'm kidding, don't hurt me.

He said as she tossed a balled-up straw wrapper at him as he chuckled with his hands up.

Marie: Either way, it can't be helped. She's putting in a lot of work right now, so she just doesn't have the time. Besides, I like it when it's just the two of us.

She said with a smirk.

(Y/N): You better not let Callie hear that.

Marie: Hey, it's her fault. You two both have too much energy. It's like having two kids on a leash running in opposite directions and trying not to lose your mind.

(Y/N): I can't help that I'm just such an entertaining person with tons of talents.

Marie: Mhm. Whatever you have to tell yourself. How about you help out the captain then since you've got all that energy and take her off my back?

(Y/N): You'd have to ask her that yourself. She always tells me she's good and not to worry.

Marie: She does, does she?

She said annoyedly at how it was quite the opposite for her.

(Y/N): At least you get to hang out with her. That's fun, right?

Marie: Eh. She doesn't talk my ear off like some people do.

She said, teasingly referencing him as one of those people.

(Y/N): But you're the one who loves to hear herself talk.

He said teasing her right back as he placed his head on his hands.

Marie: Do not!

(Y/N): It's fine, I don't mind listening to you talk though.

Marie: Real charming how you make fun of me and compliment me back and forth.

She said sarcastically with a smirk.

(Y/N): I learned how to be witty from you, so you have no one else to blame.

Marie: Now if only you could learn to be as good with puns as me.

(Y/N): Hey, I've got a pun of tons.

Marie smirked, enjoying her time off with him.

~~~
(Y/N) walked back into his house to see Veronica run up and greet him as he got home.
Veronica: How was your date?
(Y/N): It wasn't a date.
Veronica: That's not what Pearl told me.
(Y/N): Did Marina scold Pearl after she said it?
Veronica: A little...
(Y/N): Then it's not a date.
Veronica: But did you have a nice time?
(Y/N): I always do when I'm with my friends.
Veronica: Do you have fun when you're with me?
(Y/N): The most fun. Without you, my life wouldn't be half as fun.
Veronica: Do you really mean it?
(Y/N): Really really.
He said holding out his pinky for her to grab with her own before she hugged him and then jumped on the couch.
Veronica: Did Marie say where Three- the Captain's been?
(Y/N): You know you don't have to call her the Captain all of the time, right?
Veronica: I know, but when I do, she still blushes because she's still getting used to it. So, did she say why she's been so busy?
(Y/N): Nothing we don't already know. She's a hard worker. You know that.
Veronica: I wish she still would take time to play with us though...
(Y/N): I do too... So, what do you say we see if Marie is free tomorrow too and you can come with me? Maybe she'll even let us come with her to help the Captain.
Veronica: I thought you said we don't have to always call her that.
(Y/N): If we do see her, I want to see if she's still embarrassed by it.
Veronica giggled.
Veronica: I'd like that.
~~~

Marie POV

Marie set down the box and then stretched her back.

Marie: Is this fine..?

Liz: Yeah, that looks good.

Marie leaned on the wall for a moment and crossed her arms.

Marie: Why do you always ask me for help?

Liz: Because you offered your help, and it helps me out.

Marie: I remember there being others that also offered help as well...

Liz: I know, but...

Marie raised her eyebrow, questioning where she was going with it.

Liz: It's embarrassing to rely on everyone... Especially a lot of the others.

Marie: Not embarrassing to rely on me?

Liz: Not really. You seem suited for management duties.

Marie: Great... Well, thanks to you, I've got almost no free time. Because you refuse to ask them for help, he's basically always blowing up my phone to hang out as soon as I'm done helping you out or done with my work.

Her phone notification goes off.

Marie: Like that...

She started typing back a quick message.

Marie: "Mhm, sure."

She spoke out loud while sending the message, putting her phone away, and sighing.

Liz: Someone not enjoying being popular and getting all the attention?

Marie: I just need a break. I've got no time to enjoy myself.

Liz: Why not just tell him no sometimes?

Marie: Because then I'd have to come up with some excuse. It just seems... a bit rude.

Liz: You? Rude? We wouldn't want someone thinking that.

Marie: I'm not rude, I'm snarky and loveable.

Liz: Whatever you tell yourself. When you get the chance, I need your help with something else.

Marie: Of course you do...

She said as she stopped leaning on the wall.

~~~
(Y/N) POV
(Y/N) sat frowning as he sent another message to Marie that would probably go without an answer like the others before it. He was worried that he had done something to upset her and hadn't noticed it, but what could he do if she wouldn't talk to him?
Veronica: (Y/N), are you okay?
He quickly put on a fake smile.
(Y/N): Yeah, I'm fine, just checking something on my phone.
She pouted while looking him in the eye before sitting down next to him on the couch.
Veronica: You know I'm here if you need anything, right?
He smiled warmly at her.
(Y/N): I know. I can always count on you.
He said while putting an arm around her hugging her which made her happy.
~~~

He went to check his messages again.

He hadn't even bothered to message Marie anymore in a while as he had figured that she wasn't going to respond.

However, he still checked her messages hoping she would, while also checking if Callie might have a rare free day, or Liz if she finally found some free time and had just forgotten to tell him about it. But none of them seemed to message back.

At least he still had Pearl, Marina, and Veronica.

He was still upset about not seeing his other friends for so long though. He understood Callie was incredibly busy. Liz was supposedly busy as well, but he always heard how she kept asking Marie for help and wished she'd even do the same with him so he could help. As for Marie... he wasn't sure what happened, but she wasn't there either.

Veronica: (Y/N)?

He looked up and saw Veronica peeking into his room.

Veronica: You look sad.

(Y/N): Nah, nah I'm fine. Don't worry about it.

She walked into his room.

Veronica: When you're not feeling well and don't tell me, it makes me worry...

She said with her hands clasped together in front of her chest.

He smiled at how Veronica was always so innocent and caring to him whenever he needed it.

(Y/N): If I'm being honest... I guess I'm just feeling a bit lonely...

Veronica: Lonely? But I'm right here.

She said as she walked over to his bed with him.

(Y/N): I know you are and I couldn't be happier about that. I just mean with how I haven't been able to see the others in a while.

Veronica: Like how I miss hanging out with Liz?

(Y/N): Exactly. I miss hanging out with Liz, Callie, and Marie.

Veronica: Is Marie busy now too?

(Y/N): I... don't know. I'm sure she has a good reason, but I just miss her along with the others.

Veronica: Whenever I miss Liz, you know what I do?

(Y/N): What?

Veronica: I come find you or Pearl or Marina to hang with instead.

He smiled at her.

(Y/N): That does sound nice.

Veronica: You want to go hang out with Pearl and Marina again today?

(Y/N): Maybe tomorrow. Why don't you and I hang out today?

She hugged his chest.

Veronica: That sounds nice.

~~~
Pearl: You've listened to our new song, yeah?
(Y/N): I saw you two released a new one, but I haven't had the chance to yet.
Pearl: It's a collab with this one band named "Damp Socks" and-
(Y/N): -"Damp Socks"?
Pearl: Don't ask. Anyway, those guys are pretty cool. It's a rock song that we made together. Marina, you able to play that new song of ours for him on your laptop?
Marina looked away from Veronica over to Pearl who had shouted over to her.
Marina: Uh, yeah, let me find it real quick.
She said as she reached over for her laptop and brought it over to (Y/N) so he could hear, along with Veronica coming over so she could listen as well.
After listening, Veronica gushed over the song to the two.
(Y/N): As always, you two sound great.
Pearl: Good enough for you to sing it in the shower?
(Y/N): I don't know what you're talking about.
Pearl: We all know you sing in the shower. Last time I was on video call with Eight, I could even hear you in the background.
(Y/N) was blushing embarrassedly.
(Y/N): Veronica, why didn't you say anything?
Veronica: You sounded like you were having fun and I enjoy your singing.
She said with a smile while Marina let out a giggle and Pearl gave him a teasing look.
(Y/N) covered his face.
(Y/N): Can't I get at least some privacy in the shower of all places...
Pearl: Nope! You've long since given up your right to privacy.
She said while sticking a tongue out at him.
(Y/N): Not even in my own home?
Pearl: Nah, I'd win.
She said confidently.
(Y/N): Money really does solve everything, huh?
Pearl: Most things.
Marina: Pearlie...
Pearl: What? I was being generous by saying "most".
Marina just sighed which caused (Y/N) to laugh at the two.
Pearl: Find something funny, funny boy?
(Y/N): No, I just... I just forget how much I miss being here with you two sometimes.
Pearl: Y'know you could always move back here with us. I've still got plenty of room here.
Veronica: But I like our home.
She said looking up to (Y/N), worriedly.
(Y/N): Don't worry, we're not getting rid of our house.
Pearl: Well, it's an open offer, but it's whatever. It still leaves me with plenty of room in this big ol' house.
Marina: Must be even bigger for you.
Marina teased under her breath, getting caught by Pearl, causing Marina to move on the defensive.
(Y/N) enjoyed hanging out with the two idols. They were some of the first friends he made when he came to Inkopolis. They brought a spark to his life that he didn't know how he ever lived without.
~~~

Veronica POV

(Y/N) was watching a movie with Veronica on the couch when he suddenly heard his phone go off.

Veronica: I thought you said you turned your phone on quiet mode.

(Y/N): Sorry, I just don't want to risk missing a call or message if someone's trying to reach me.

She pouted but conceded.

Veronica: Okay... but what is it?

He checked a notification.

(Y/N): It's from... Marie?!

He couldn't contain his happiness as a smile had grown on his face with Veronica noticing how happy it made him to finally hear back from his friend.

Veronica: I told you they didn't forget about you.

She said giving him a warm smile.

Veronica: What did she say? She better say why she's been avoiding your messages.

She said with a slightly annoyed face at how it had been making (Y/N) sad to not hear from her for so long.

(Y/N): She said she wants to meet me at Octo Canyon for something important.

He had already stood up while looking at the phone without realizing it, which had caused Veronica to giggle at his eagerness.

Veronica: Well, you better hurry up and see what she wants then, right?

(Y/N): Y-Yeah! Sorry, Veronica, I'll have to postpone watching a movie with you until later.

Veronica: Okay! Have fun!

She said while waving him off as he almost ran out the door.

Veronica breathed a sigh of relief after he left. She wouldn't say it to his face, but she could see through the mask he put on and could tell that he was really missing his three friends. She hoped Callie would be there to see him too, and since it was at Octo Canyon, Liz might be there too. Then, next time, Veronica could see Liz again too!

~~~
Marie POV
Marie: There you go. He's on his way.
She said annoyed at having to be the messenger.
Marie: You really couldn't do it yourself?
Liz: It was your idea in the first place. So, what's wrong with being the one to ask him?
Marie: The point was that you were supposed to ask him for help to do something. Give him something to do.
Liz: But you're so good at iiiit. Besides, you're the one who recruited him. Isn't he your responsibility?
Marie: I guess if you word it well enough, you can pawn the job off on anyone... I'll just be happy once we can get this going. This has been a long time coming already.
Callie: Marie, you better wipe that sour expression off your face.
Marie: Maybe once we're done here, I will.
Callie: You're no fun. I'm just glad I can see him for a bit again. I've been so busy filming and doing other work, it's been so long since I've seen him. I just wish it could last longer... It almost makes me wish I could've switched places with you so I didn't have to constantly apologize to him for being busy.
Marie: You're more than happy to switch with me.
Callie: And let you spoil television audiences with your attitude? No way! I must protect the general public as much as I can...
She said pumping a fist in the air determinedly.
Marie: You do remember we both used to deliver the news together, right?
Callie: I know. There's only so much my cuteness can overwhelm your gloominess.
Marie just glared at her cousin who looked so earnest as if she was the fictional protagonist making a sacrifice for the greater good.
~~~

(Y/N) POV

(Y/N) popped out of the grate that led from the Inkopolis Square to Octo Canyon.

He couldn't contain his smile as the first thing he noticed was the sight of Liz, Marie, Callie, and Cuttlefish. The last of which even wearing a floral shirt.

Callie was the first one to notice and rushed over and immediately pulled him into a hug that he happily returned, missing the energetic squid's antics.

Liz smiled as she gave a wave over to him while Cuttlefish put his hands up in a peace sign as he smiled.

(Y/N): So, what's the important news?

Marie: First off, I finally convinced the Cap'n here to take a break.

(Y/N) was happy to hear it, hoping this meant that his friends would have more free time and they could all hang out together again.

(Y/N): How'd you pull something like that off?

Cuttlefish: Well, I've been planning on going on a vacation for a while now ever since I retired.

Marie: And I asked Gramps if it'd be fine for us to tag along for a relaxing vacation together. Then, I had the hard part of convincing the Cap'n to take a break from her duties to join us and relax.

Callie: And the amount of filming I've had to do has lightened up finally, and I managed to also sneak in some free time to go with them too!

(Y/N) was smiling hearing the fun trip they had been planning for seemingly a while now and wanted to hear more.

(Y/N): What finally convinced you to go along with it?

Liz: Marie's been bugging me to ask you to help me out, and I finally budged.

(Y/N) was confused hearing this. Did she want him to help carry the luggage or something like that? It wouldn't have been his first choice, but just getting to finally spend time with them at all was more than enough for him at this point. He could handle a little work no question.

(Y/N): Help how?

Liz: Well, the reason I was so opposed to going was that someone has to watch the DJ over there.

She pointed over with her thumb at DJ Octavio who was in his snowglobe.

Liz: If someone's not here to watch him, he'll break out again and become another problem.

Octavio: Or maybe that was just a one-time thing?

Liz: Yeah, I'm sure it was...

(Y/N) stood there understanding what was going on now, feeling a little shell shocked upon realization.

Liz: So, do you think you can handle that while we're gone? It's not that hard, just gotta keep watch basically.

Marie hadn't asked him to come here to see him...

(Y/N) put on a smile.

(Y/N): Is that all? Yeah, no problem!

None of them had.

Liz: Great, the only thing you really have to do is make sure he's got food to eat so he doesn't starve to death.

Octavio: What am I?! A pet?!

Did none of them miss him like he had missed them?

Liz: I do feel sorry that you'll have to listen to his annoying ramblings, but I'm sure you'll do a much better job annoying him than he can to you.

She chuckled with (Y/N) returning a laugh at her joke.

Were they pretending like these many months hadn't happened?

Cuttlefish: Well, we've got a flight to catch, so we'll leave it in your capable hands now!

He said happily picking up his two suitcases and making his way out first as the other three followed after him.

Is this really all they want from him?

Callie: It was nice to see you again.

Callie said as she hugged him tightly before following after Cuttlefish into the grate.

Did Callie not want him to come with her? Had she gotten over him and not cared to leave him behind? Did she not even want to catch up..?

Liz gave him a playful two-finger salute with a smile following after.

Did Liz not have anything to actually say to him? Why had they shut him out? Was this all the use he could offer her? He'd be happy to do whatever she says if she'd just...

Marie walked past him, standing over the grate to leave, not looking at him as she did.

Look at me..... Say something...

He watched as she dived into the grate after the others without anything to add.

The smile he had held up in front of them didn't leave even after they all had even as he blinked away the glossy liquid that had been starting to build up as they left him there.

Veronica POV

Veronica heard the door open and close, signaling (Y/N)'s return home.

She was excited to hear what had happened when he had gone to see Marie had Octo Canyon.

She spotted his smile briefly as he passed by her, causing her to smile too.

Veronica: How did it go? Was Liz there too?

(Y/N) didn't turn, but had his usual chipper attitude about him.

(Y/N): Yeah, Marie, Callie, Liz, Cuttlefish, they were all there.

Veronica: Finally! What did you all talk about?

(Y/N): Nothing much, they had somewhere to be, so we didn't talk much.

Veronica was wondering why he seemed so happy despite that. Was that little bit of time enough for him to be happy with? She hated to admit it, but it annoyed her a little to hear, hoping that he'd come home gushing about how good of a time they had after so long.

Veronica: So, do they finally have some free time?

(Y/N): Yeah, they're all taking a break so they can relax a bit finally.

Veronica smiled once again hearing that.

Veronica: Then we can go and see them sometime soon now?

(Y/N): No, they, uh...

He hesitated for a second, catching Veronica's attention.

(Y/N): They're going to go someplace fun to relax on their own together.

Veronica was flabbergasted at this.

Veronica: What did they call you there for?

(Y/N): They needed someone to watch Octavio while they're gone, so they trusted me enough to be the perfect person for the job.

Veronica went silent upon hearing this, walking over to where he had been standing, grabbing his hands, and standing in front of him, looking into his face.

She felt worried from what she saw. He didn't look as if he'd been crying, but... the light in his eyes that she loved seemed faded.

Veronica: How much does it hurt?

(Y/N): It's not that bad. I'm a tough boy, I can take it.

He said forcing a big, cheerful smile.

Veronica stared him down until he opened his eyes and looked into hers.

Veronica: But how do you feel about it?

(Y/N): I-...

As he stared down her determined look, his smile slowly fell as if it was something being lowered from the rope that was forcibly hanging it up.

(Y/N): I feel like I'm losing my friends... and they don't even care...

Even without any tears falling from his sunken face, she embraced him by pulling him into a hug to comfort him.

Veronica: You won't lose me.

Still, not a sob from him as he hugged her, as if afraid that she'd disappear if he let go.

Veronica: You've got time to hang out with Pearl, Marina, and me still, right?

(Y/N) backed up a bit from the hug, but still holding her in his arms.

(Y/N): Yeah, hehe. I'm not too busy. At least I've got you three...

Veronica: The others will be back too. They're just tired right now...

He pulled her into the hug once more, thankful for this light in his life.

~~~
(Y/N) POV
(Y/N) walked through the front door, bored of the long day he spent watching the DJ.
Everyone: SURPRISE!
He was taken off guard at the sudden exclamation.
(Y/N): Woah, what's the occasion?
He said with a tired smile on his face after seeing Pearl, Marina, and Veronica greet him before he noticed the decorations.
Marina: It's someone's birthday~.
Pearl: How do you forget your own birthday?
(Y/N): I guess, I've just been a little lost in my own head recently.
He said with a nervous laugh.
Veronica was cheerfully grinning at him.
Veronica: Do you like it? It was my idea!
(Y/N): I love it. Seriously, thanks you three.
Pearl: This is nothin'. Of course we could manage this. But if you wanted to throw a real rager then-
(Y/N): -No no, that won't be necessary.
Pearl shrugged.
Pearl: Suit yourself. Now that you're here, we can get to the cake!
(Y/N): You girls got a cake?
He asked with a warm smile.
Marina: Actually~... I baked it myself. I thought I'd try my hand at it, and what better excuse than to try for a special occasion?
She spoke with a care that warmed (Y/N)'s heart to hear after such a boring day.
Pearl: I tried baking some cupcakes too!
Pearl said trying to bring some of his attention to her with a proud look.
(Y/N): Really? Where are they?
Pearl deflated a bit.
Pearl: Uh...
Marina: Weeee had to throw them out... I don't think they were safe to consume... or able to with how hard they were.
(Y/N): What did you do to make them end up as hard as a rock?
Pearl: I fell asleep while they were in the oven...
She poked her fingers together embarrassingly.
(Y/N): Well-
Pearl: -Five times...
(Y/N) was silent for a moment as she felt a bit shameful of her failure.
(Y/N): Well, it's the thought that counts. I'm glad you tried five times. It shows how much care you put into it.
He said before hugging Pearl.
Marina: Don't I get a hug? I'm the one who baked the cake we're all going to enjoy (hopefully).
(Y/N): Of course.
He said, hugging her with a laugh at her jealousy.
Veronica was looking up at him with pleading eyes, not even needing to say anything for him to know to hug her next.
Marina and Pearl happily walked over to the cake to start lighting the candles, which there was a lot of thanks to Pearl.
Veronica: I'm sorry it's only us three here to celebrate it.
(Y/N): That's more than enough for me.
Marina: Pearl, you're going to set the house on fire!
Pearl: Hang on, I've almost got them all lit! Just be glad I didn't bring the flamethrower!
Marina: PEARL!
~~~

(Y/N): Thanks again for inviting me out today.

Marina: It's been a while since it's able to just be you and I, so I thought why not?

She giggled.

Marina: I know I've been busy recently, so I wanted to make sure I took a break to still have some fun.

(Y/N): Yeah, I was wondering what you were up to.

Marina: It's just this little side project I've been working on. I haven't got it quite figured out yet, but I've just been brainstorming and coming up with ideas to try and figure it out.

(Y/N): Well, I know if anyone can figure it out, you can. You're the smartest person I know.

Marina: And you're the strongest I know. That said, you've got to get used to the motorcycle already though.

(Y/N): How am I supposed to get used to it when you pop a wheelie specifically when I'm not expecting it?

Marina: I don't know what you're talking about. It just does that on its own.

She stated coyly as the two got back on the motorcycle.

(Y/N): Oh yeah, I'm suuuure it does. I know enough about motorcycles to know that's tooootally true.

The two were riding off now.

Marina: Wouldn't you ever like to try driving a motorcycle? It's pretty cooool.

(Y/N): I don't know. It's mostly just starting that's the part that worries me. Just suddenly speeding up at the beginning is the issue.

Marina: Come on, you know how to ride a bike, don't you? It's not that different.

(Y/N): Except this one has a motor in it and it's much quicker. There's no pedaling-

While he was busy stating the differences, she raised an eyebrow at him before coming up with an idea.

Marina: Well, there's only one thing I can do to fix your attitude toward motorcycles.

She said as she let go of the handles as they were still moving, holding her hands up.

Marina: You're going to have to steer yourself.

(Y/N): Marina, quick messing around, grab the handles.

Marina: I thought you said it was starting that worried you? It's already going, so this is the easy part.

(Y/N): Marina, come on, we're on a road.

Marina: We sure are. You should grab the handles.

She said smirking at him as his nervous face reached around her as he leaned forward to grab them.

Marina lowered her arms down around his arms on her sides as he tried carefully to keep them on the road.

(Y/N): There. Is that good enough? You can take over now?

Marina: A little bit longer. You're doing well.

She was smiling as she could tell how nervous he was and how he had to lean right up against her back to reach the handles and try to look over her shoulder to see where they were going.

(Y/N): Okay, okay, motorcycles are cool. Can you take over now?

Marina: Do you promise to try it out again later?

She asked as she put her hands over his on the handles, holding them there.

(Y/N): What? Sure, fine.

Marina: Okay, it's a promise though~.

She let his hands slip out from under as he wrapped his arms around her again and she took control of the motorcycle back.

After driving for a while, they finally ended up back at Pearl's home where they hopped off.

Marina was checking her phone first while (Y/N) was heading for the door already.

However, he was cut off by Marina's scream.

Marina: Oh my cod!

He looked confusedly at her before she ran past him and ran inside.

He followed after her.

Marina: Pearlie, are you serious?!

Pearl: For real serious!

Marina: This is- I'm so- OH MY COD!

Pearl: That's what I said!

(Y/N): I'm confused, what's going on here?

Pearl: I bagged Off the Hook a world tour! WE'RE GONNA BE WORLDWIDE FAMOUS NOW!

The two cheered happily.

(Y/N): That's... amazing!

Marina: I know! What could be bigger than a world tour?! The whole world gets to hear our music! I don't even- What do we do to prepare for this kind of thing?!

Pearl: We've got plenty of time to prepare, Marina. You just calm down, get excited again, then we get ready to show the world why we're the best.

Marina just happily nodded her head and shook her hands in excitement.

(Y/N) smiled at seeing the two try their best to keep their excitement contained and both failing as Pearl couldn't wipe the happy face off no matter what she tried.

~~~
(Y/N): I'm guessing they're busy again today?
He asked while leaning back into the couch.
Veronica: Preparing for a world tour takes a lot of work.
(Y/N): I know, I get it. I was just looking forward to doing something fun after getting back from watching the has-been all day...
He said in a bored manner.
Veronica: You and I can still have fun together!
She said to cheer him up.
He smiled.
(Y/N): At least no matter what, I can always enjoy some quality time with my favorite Octoling.
Veronica: Ooooh, I'm gonna tell Marina.
(Y/N): Please don't.
Veronica: I'm kidding.
She giggled, enjoying seeing him worry for a second thinking she didn't understand he always said everyone was his favorite person/people.
Veronica hopped over the side of the couch and crawled across him for the television remote.
Veronica: Yoink!
(Y/N): Hey, you aren't going to ask first?
Veronica: Nope! You'd probably just put on something boring or read a book during it anyway.
(Y/N): Fine, you can find us something good to enjoy.
Veronica: Yay!
She exclaimed as she quickly started flicking through all of the channels at rapid speed, confusing (Y/N) on whether she even could tell what was on each channel or not.
He looked at her as she held her tongue out while focusing on the television before he randomly decided to hug her, throwing off her focus.
Veronica: What's this for? Are you trying to tickle me?
(Y/N): No, I... I'm just really glad you're here with me.
She looked at him confused for a second before noticing his tired expression. He didn't just seem physically tired, but emotionally tired.
She sat up and hugged him back.
Veronica: Always.
~~~

(Y/N) exited his room in the morning, getting something to eat before he went to check on Octavio, but was interrupted by a nervous-looking Veronica.

(Y/N): What's wrong, Veronica?

Veronica: Nothing, but... I wanted to ask your opinion on something...

(Y/N): Shoot.

Veronica sat down beside him in another chair.

Veronica: Pearl and Marina are going to be going on their world tour soon, and... they asked me if I could come with them and help them out with stuff too...

(Y/N) was silent for a moment before swallowing the food in his mouth and answering her.

(Y/N): That sounds fun, what's the issue?

Veronica: I know how you've been feeling for a long time now, and... if I leave with them... you'll be all by yourself...

(Y/N): Veronica, don't worry about me. Going with them on this world tour sounds like an amazing once-in-a-lifetime situation, and they're your friends. They even asked for your help, so I think you'd be silly to say no.

He said cheerfully smiling at her.

Veronica: But will you be okay? I don't want you to be sad and have no one there for you...

(Y/N): Veronica, you're not going to be gone forever. Besides, I'm sure Liz and the others have to be coming home sometime soon. Honestly, I'm surprised they managed to convince her to take this long of a vacation in the first place.

He chuckled.

Veronica still didn't look convinced as she feared he was just acting tough for her sake.

Veronica: Are you sure..?

(Y/N): Super duper sure.

Veronica: Okay... I'm sorry you can't come with us...

(Y/N): I know you are because you care so much. But I've got to wait for the others to come back before I can go off and do my own things... But that shouldn't be too much longer!

Veronica: Have they responded to your messages yet..?

(Y/N): I just messaged Marie the other day.

Veronica smiled a bit finally.

Veronica: That's good!

She hugged him.

Veronica: Thank you so much for being the bestest ever.

He hugged her without getting out of his chair.

Veronica: I'm not leaving today, but I promise that I'll message you all the time to tell you how it's going, okay?

(Y/N): You promise?

Veronica: I wouldn't think of forgetting.

He smiled again as she held out her pinky finger for him to pinky promise with her.

Veronica: Well, I'm going to head to Pearl's house early today to see if they might need help with anything!

(Y/N): Tell them I said hi.

Veronica: I will!

She happily waved goodbye, leaving him there.

(Y/N):  . . .

He sighed.

(Y/N): She wouldn't forget about me.

He smiled sheepishly.

~~~
He sat in Octo Canyon, happily reading Veronica's texts that she had promised to keep up with. However, he couldn't help but find his fingers making their way to his other messages to see he still had no new messages.
Marie still had never responded to any of his texts no matter what he sent. But Veronica's messages kept coming which gave him the strength to keep going.
He was however worried about paying for his house since he hadn't had the most time to do any Turf Wars and he wouldn't have Veronica to help him, but luckily Pearl decided to help out and pay the bills for a while for them.
(Y/N) felt bad about it, but Pearl convinced him that she literally didn't notice when that amount of money was spent, and she even offered to just give him some more money for personal use which he did turn down.
It hurt him to think of a home without even Veronica there, but she had kept her promise and gave him a light to look forward to.
~~~

Veronica POV

Pearl and Marina were walking with Veronica away from the stage.

Veronica: Your shows are always the greatest forever and ever!

Marina: Your praise is worth a thousand cheering fans, Eight.

Pearl: Yeah, we've got the best hype man in the business!

Veronica chuckled as she brought out her phone to start texting (Y/N) about how the show had gone but she was called out by Pearl.

Pearl and Marina were walking off without her.

Pearl: Yo, Eight! Don't you wanna come to the afterparty?

Veronica: Y-Yeah! One second.

She went back to typing but noticed the other two were walking off without her.

Pearl: Ya better hurry up, girl! You don't want to get left behind!

Veronica tried typing quicker but kept looking over to see the two walking on without her before she just decided to stick her phone in her pocket and run after them.

Veronica: Wait for meeee!

~~~
(Y/N) POV
Sitting in Octo Canyon, he found himself empty for yet another of these never-ending lonely days.
He was looking through his messages on his phone to check again at the lack of any messages from any of his friends.
Veronica had kept her promise to message him for a while, but her messages slowly became more and more sparse before eventually... they stopped coming at all.
He tried to think of what could've happened to make her stop when she promised, but he eventually just figured she had forgotten him.
He had tried his best to hold out on his own though.
He tried just entertaining himself by annoying Octavio but he couldn't bring himself to make fun of the lame DJ after a while and now just sat around waiting for something that would seemingly never happen anyway.
Sometimes, (Y/N) wished that DJ Octavio would just break out of the snow globe again just for anything to change this monotonous, lonely life he was living.
(Y/N) couldn't change anything about his life thanks to this old has-been. Because he was stuck watching the DJ, he was forced to sit here and wait for the eventuality of Octavio breaking out and starting trouble.
Would that bring the others back finally?
He shook the idea out of his head. He needed something to change about this life he was living.
Everyone else had moved on to greater things with each other, but he had a ball and chain keeping him in place, forced to watch everyone else go on without him.
He pulled his phone back up and hesitated for a moment before clicking Marie's messages when he decided to type up a message.
He saw all of the messages he had sent her previously, souring his expression at how none of them had a response.
He knew nothing has changed to make it so she'd respond to this one, but at this point, he couldn't help it. He needed her to respond now and was hoping she would, no matter how foolhardy it was.
---
(Y/N): Hey, it's been a while. You guys must be busy, huh?
---
He knew what the outcome of messaging her was, but he didn't feel he had any other choice at this point but to wait on a miracle.
~~~

(Y/N) sat in front of the snow globe as the rain poured on top of him.

He didn't bother getting out of the rain after it started, assuming it would all blow over quickly. However, the rain merely got worse as he continued to sit in front of the DJ who awaited for anything to happen.

Usually, (Y/N) would come up to the snow globe to poke fun at him or something along those lines, but recently, he's done nothing but sit there.

Why did no one care to remember Agent 4? He did as they all asked of him. Why was he the one no one stuck by to help when he needed it..?

He questioned why he was even still here anymore. If he left, nothing would change. They would never be back for him. They'd never notice he stopped doing his job.

He stood up and looked around.

If they did care, they'd have come to help him when he needed it, surely.

He shook his head and turned back to face Octavio in the snow globe.

(Y/N) found it ironic that the only person that did need him was this old evil octopus.

If he left him here alone, he surely would starve to death unless he broke out again.

Could he trust the old fool to manage to do so and be okay on his own?

No, (Y/N) would feel too guilty if Octavio couldn't manage to get out and something bad did happen to him.

But why should that be (Y/N)'s fault? It was as much their fault for leaving him with this job.

They said they were going to go on a nice vacation, a quick break. How could they leave him to do this for this long? The seasons changed before his eyes, and no one is left to be with him to celebrate the holidays passing by. Did they truly expect (Y/N) to wait there and do this job until he was as old as Cuttlefish? Was he serving the purpose they expected him to?

He crouched down with his face in his knees.

(Y/N) wanted nothing more than to just leave and not come back here. If Octavio got out, they'd be mad at him. Would them being mad at him be better than them not being here for him at all?

DJ Octavio POV

Octavio: By all means, if you wish to drown yourself in this downpour, go right ahead. But don't leave me here. Laughing at your downfall would only give me slight enjoyment as I starved to death.

Octavio had grown tired of this old song and dance. Agent 4 didn't even mess with him anymore. When Octavio stared at him anymore, all he saw was a husk of a person. Octavio found it so pathetic how this sad squid was the one that somehow foiled his plans.

Agent 4 turned to look over his shoulder at the old menace.

He walked over to the snow globe and stared right at Octavio, which left Octavio disgusted as the pitiful-looking Inkling looked at him with those uncaring eyes.

Oh, how Octavio wished for the day he'd make Agent 4 pay for ruining his plans over and over and over again. Along with the many times he's just purposefully gone out of his way to annoy him.

Octavio shut his eyes, enjoying the ideas he came up with in his head these years he's been locked in the snow globe.

Octavio's eyes opened as a curious sound reached his ears.

He noticed the snow globe was open. Not on accident, nor was it broken. It was opened manually.

Octavio looked over and saw Agent 4 still staring at him with those unfeeling eyes as Octavio questioned what was going on.

He exited the snow globe while keeping his eyes trained on Agent 4, wondering what his end goal here was.

(Y/N): Just go, Octavio.

Octavio: Do you seek to trick me?

(Y/N): No trick. If you want to do your sad old game of stealing Zapfish and getting your butt kicked by the N.S.S. that's fine. Go find your army. It's someone else's turn to deal with you if that's what you want. I'm done with living these same days over and over again.

Octavio walked up to Agent 4, eyeing him, thinking about all of the ideas he thought of how to take revenge on the annoying agent. However, the look on the agent's face didn't sit right with his Octavio. There was no fight left in him. He truly has become a shell of a person, and it infuriated him even more than when he was an active nuisance. To see the one that beat him in a state where had given up on it all.

Octavio turned away and found his exit off of this floating prison he resided on for years now.

The anger still present as that pitiful squid ruined all of the ideas of revenge he had conjured in his head for this very moment.

Octavio didn't need to be talked down to like that like he was a joke villain. He'd find his army and this time he would succeed in his goals. Maybe when Agent 4 sees how Octavio changes the world he knows, that will bring back the light in his eyes enough for Octavio to find satisfaction in revenge against him.

(Y/N) POV

(Y/N) sat down under the awning of the Cuttlefish shack. Pondering what he had just done while taking heavy breaths, feeling as though he couldn't catch any.

He really did it.

He needed a reason to force him to not come back to this place every day and he found it...

(Y/N) hoped he'd feel better now. He was out of the stormy rain falling on him under the awning. However, the water kept falling down his face even now.

Why? Why did this all happen? Didn't he do everything right? Everything he was told? It's not fair...

~~~
He sat on the floor of his bedroom, hyperventilating.
(Y/N) had acted in the moment without questioning it finally. He couldn't go back now..! He couldn't back...
While running back home through the rain, he had texted Marie to apologize, but he knew that wouldn't make up for what he did.
What was he meant to do now?
His breath got caught in his throat.
He couldn't stay here anymore, but... he didn't have to stay here anymore.
Everyone else had left to do better things. Wasn't he owed his turn to do the same?
But where would he go?
Anywhere.
What should he do?
Whatever he wants.
He should just go now. Why sit here feeling awful for another day? This is what he wanted. He might not have done it in the cleanest way, but he had done it. He could find his own way now to go. He wasn't being held back anymore.
He didn't even plan on packing anything to take with him. He went to leave his room, but then he stopped and looked at his phone that was sitting atop his dresser.
He didn't need it after all of this, so he should leave it, but... he physically couldn't bring himself to leave this room without it as he snatched it up and left his room.
While on his way to leave, he stopped in front of Veronica's door.
He shook his head as he walked past it before soon after coming back with a pencil and paper.
---
Dear Veronica,
When you read this note, I won't be here anymore. I missed you so much. I missed all of the others too, but your light was the part of my daily life I couldn't live without most of all. You were always there to remind me of what I still had, but now with even you gone, I feel as though I've lost everything.
I still agree with what I told you. It was a good idea for you to go with Pearl and Marina. Maybe you can tell me all about the best parts when next we meet. However, I'm afraid it's going to be a long time before that happens.
Do not think this was your fault. I did something bad, and I can't take it back. I hope nothing bad comes of it, but I can't stay here anymore. I'm not sure when we'll meet again. I've already decided that wherever I'm going, it's not in Inkopolis. I've been stuck here long enough, forced to watch everyone else move on while I could not.
I don't know what I'm hoping to find, but whenever we see each other again, I hope I can smile and tell you all about it if I've managed to find it yet.
Not seeing the smile on your face when you come home is probably my biggest regret, but if you can bear it, I hope you can wear an even bigger smile whenever you see me again.
I'm sure there's plenty I've forgotten to write in this note. You know I'm not good at remembering things in the heat of the moment, and I'm writing this just before I go out the door. I just hope I've said everything important and made my point clear.
Love,
(Y/N)
---
(Y/N): Well, whatever I look to do next, it sure won't be literature.
He said, mocking his quickly written letter before folding it into an envelope and placing it perfectly on Veronica's pillow.
He then confidently marched toward the front door, only pausing in the doorway to take one final look around his house, reminiscing on the memories made here before making his leave finally.
~~~

(Y/N) walked to the Square first.

He paused and gawked at how no one was here anymore despite this being what was once the hottest spot in Inkopolis. Even the Crust Bucket wasn't here anymore.

(Y/N): I guess he has to move to where there's business.

He continued on past the Square.

Right now, he was just walking and not thinking of where he was going.

He thought about it for a moment.

He had already walked to Inkopolis. Either he walks back along the coast in the direction of the coast and passes his house in that direction, or he keeps going in the direction he's going now.

What's in this direction of Inkopolis?

On that side marked the mountain range that split the Inkling and Octoling turf, but he has seen enough from the top of Octo Canyon to remember the desert past the Octoling turf where there was just a desert.

He was interested in what was on the other side of that desert, and now maybe he'd be able to figure that out.

He thought about taking the grate to Octo Canyon in hopes of getting to the desert faster, but he didn't want to see that place again after what he did there last.

(Y/N): I guess I'm taking the long way.

He thought about how Pearl and Marina had mentioned the tallest mountain in between the Inkling and Octoling turf and how they met there. Now, he'd be able to see it for himself on the way through this adventure.

~~~
He sluggishly dragged his feet through the endless sand dunes.
(Y/N): Why did... I think... this was... a good idea..?
He saw a water bottle sticking out of the sand. He couldn't care less about the litter right now instead of just rushing to it in the hopes there was any bits of water still in it.
However, when he grabbed it, there was just sand inside of it that poured out.
(Y/N): Okay, who bottles sand?
He was so thirsty right now that it upset him.
(Y/N): Go to the desert I thought! It always looked so pretty I thought! Why am I even here?!
He said while kicking the sand in front of him causing the sand to topple over and him to start falling down the dune.
He picked his face out of the sand and saw his smartphone lying in the sand in front of him before he picked it up again worryingly.
He made sure it still worked before hesitating for a moment and checking his messages again. However, as he already knew, there was no one who had reached out.
He got angry again.
(Y/N): Useless phone!
He screamed before he threw his phone as hard as he could.
After taking a few seconds to breathe, he realized what he'd just done.
He quickly ran after his phone in the direction he threw it, but he didn't see where it landed.
He looked around for a minute.
(Y/N): Nonononononono.
He planted his face in the sand, frustrated at how he had done something so dumb in the heat of the moment before raising his face out of the sand as it burned his face.
(Y/N): I could've still used that phone to call for help maybe if I needed it... If I die in this desert, I'm going to splat Past (Y/N).
He continued to walk on without his phone or anything to hydrate himself with.
~~~

Frye POV

Frye: You two, do you see that?

She pointed in the direction of an Inkling who was rolling down a dune.

Shiver, Frye, and Big Man looked in the direction she pointed out to see an Inkling rolling down a dune in the desert.

Shiver smirked as she shut her fan.

Shiver: I think it's time for the bandit band, Deep Cut, to introduce ourselves to this poor soul.

Big Man: Ay? (Are we going to do the entrance?)

Shiver: Of course we're going to do the entrance.

Frye: If we don't do the entrance, how will we ever gain infamy?

Big Man: Ay, ay. (You're right, you're right.)

The three hopped atop Master Mega before heading in the direction of the Inkling who had crossed their paths in the desert.

~Flashback Ends~

(Y/N) POV

He shut his eyes to stop looking at the two phones to try his best to hold back the sobs as much as he could.

(Y/N): Why did I ever think it would go differently a second time..?

Just then, he heard the door of Eva's apartment open up behind him, signaling that Eva was already back.

(Y/N) felt Little Buddy get up and make some squeaky noises at her entrance.

He didn't know if he could bear turning to face her right now with the tears still threatening to fall down his face, but he thought about all she had been doing for him. She was the last person he had who cared for him left, and she tried helping him.

It wasn't up to Eva to reach (Y/N). Someone can try and reach out to someone who's hurting as much as they want, but you can't force the person to take their helping hand. They have to take that hand themselves when it's offered to them.

Did he have the strength to accept her help? He didn't know, but if he didn't try, then what was the point? He can't live like this, and she'd do anything to help him because she's his friend.

(Y/N): I... I'm sorry... You tried so hard to help, and... I couldn't accept it.

His words struggled to come out, threatening to fall apart midway through his speech.

(Y/N): I'm so afraid of this all happening again... But... I trust that you want to help me, and I can at least reach out for help...

He said it all, but he still was too afraid to face her and turn away from the wall.

(Y/N) was shocked when he started hearing sobbing coming from behind him.

He couldn't take hearing that from her, who had come to help, and he looked over his shoulder to take the first step.

However, the person was not who he thought it was.

His eyes grew wide when he recognized who was the one standing before him with tears running down her face and a smile glowing past her tears.

???: I found you...
