"Come on, Violet, you can do it! We all believe you can do it!" My mom cheered, supporting me in my very first attempt on turning into a squid.

Today was my birthday and I was turning 14 1/2. I'm the second youngest in my family. My squid spurt was early, so here I am, trying to make everyone in my family proud of me.

If I'd mess this up, it would be a huge let down. Every squid that turns 14 can have the ability to turn into either a squid or a kid whenever they choose. It's like a tradition or something...

I couldn't help but feel a bit pressured. My mom had her camera recording me. My dad, my auntie Riley, and all of my brothers and sisters ,named from oldest to youngest, Cole, Oscar, Iris, Daniel, Dawn, and Yumei, all watched with excitement.

"You can do it, Vi Vi!" My sister Dawn cheered. My brother, Daniel chuckled a little. He knew how much I hated being called "Vi Vi".

I gave it all my might. Before I knew it, I transformed into a squid. Everyone cheered for me in happiness. My squid form was in my original color, purple. I transformed back into a kid. I couldn't believe that my hair color was the same as my squid color. It was going to take me some time to get used to my new form.

I cheered in happiness. My family all came to me and hugged me in one big group hug.

"Congrats, kiddo! Guess you're a squid kid now! How does it feel to be 14...well..in a half?" My Auntie Riley beamed.

"It feels pretty good!" I chirped happily.

"Gosh, Violet, why did your squid form look so small?" My bother, Cole teased. I gave him a playful tease back as well.

"Heh, just messing with ya!" he smiled, playfully rubbing my head. "Welcome to the life of being a squid!"

"We're all so proud of you, honey!" my mom smiled, giving me a kiss on the forehead."Happy birthday."

"Just wait until you start battling in turf wars!" my dad said.

"Lucas..." My mom mumbled to him. Dad's eyes were widened. He quickly covered his mouth, knowing he had done wrong.

"Oh boy..." Aunt Riley mumbled.

Mom shook her head slightly. There hadn't been single moment when neither of them mentioned anything about turf wars. They kept it a secret from me, but I never knew why.

"Mindy, she's 14. She can go out on her own now. We can't keep her here for much longer. We're going to have to let her go sooner or later." dad exclaimed.

"She's 14 in a half, Lucas. We don't even know if her squid form has fully developed yet or not." mom added. "You agree with me don't you, Riley?"

Aunt Riley slowly walked over to her brother, raising both of her hands up in innocence. "Sorry, Minds, but I'm with my brother on this one. I understand you're trying to protect Violet, but you've got to let her out on her own to discover things for herself."

"Yeah, mom why can't I go to Inkopolis. All my brothers and sisters get to go. Why can't I? It's not fair!" I argued.

"Sweetheart, I'm only doing this because I love you. You're not yet ready for this, Violet. Your father agrees with the decision as well, right Lucas?" mom asked him.

My dad hesitated. "Um-"

"Lucas?" mom asked again, making him think about what he was doing. If I know anything about relationships, it's that the mother is always right.

"Uh-um yeah!" he answered.

"Dang, sorry, Lucas. You had to do it. Happy wife, happy life. Unhappy wife,....stone cold misery for the rest of your life."

"But mom-" I said, interrupted by my mom's final words.

"Violet, you're not going to Inkopolis and that's final. Maybe next year, honey. "

At that moment, I felt depression. All ever wanted to do was go to Inkopolis and make new friends, experience turf wars for myself, and maybe even meet the Squid Sisters, but I can't do that this year...

The school bus came and was waiting for us outside. I looked at my mom and nodded, even though I felt sad at the moment.

"It's time to go, guys!" said Iris as she ran out the door."Bye mom, bye dad, bye Auntie Riley love you!BYE!"

"We'll see you later, honey." my mom added. "I'm sorry. Try to have a good day today."

As Cole, Oscar, Daniel, Dawn, Yumei, and I walked towards the door, I could see my mom, dad, and aunt waving at us. All of my siblings waved and ran towards the bus. Cole; instead, waited on me.

"You coming, Vi?" he asked.

"Yeah..." I answered softly. My brother could see the sadness that crossed my face.

"They're just trying to protect you, Vi. They're parents. It's what they do. I'm sure they don't mean to keep you from going to Inkopolis. They're just doing what's right." he exclaimed.

I hesitated and thought about what he was saying.

"Well, we don't want to be late." Cole added as he walked out the door. "Later mom, dad, and aunt Riley!"

My head turned to all three of them. I waved at them with a warm smile on my face. "Love you guys!" I spoke. With that, I ran outside to catch my bus to get ready for a new day.
