Prolouge
Dan
Cold numbness. That's all Dan felt. His hands shivered, exposed to the cold - no gloves or hat - just a plain, simple coat. It was cold enough for him to see his own breath. This was a sign for Dan to go back home, but he decided not to. He just sat there on that bench, in the freezing cold.
As always, Dan left his warm home to adventure- or take a walk, to the nearby park. Though it was near a eerie woods, which he is terrified of, he looked past it just to sneak out and blur his thoughts with a liquid filled bottle. Dan is never one to break "rules" such as that, or at least in the past.
Just this once, he thought, I'll only come here to think when I really need it. This is the last time.
He knew he was wrong, though he wouldn't come for awhile, he'd still come back. Probably not for or with the same reasons, but he'll come back.
Dan took a small sip out of the flask - in which he found lying around at his house. Most likely a reason why it was lying around, but Dan would rather live with ignorance of it, than know of it for now.
The burning liquid slid down his throat and his mind slowly became a haze. His sight was just a blur of dizziness.
"Dan-Dan!" A familiar voice rang, slightly muffled by Dan trying to ignore it. A partially blurry figure ran up to him and sat him up from laying on his side, but Dan rested his head on the person. He recognized the embrace immediately and the slight frustrated mutters that resembled his mother when she was upset with him, only deeper.
"P-Peej.." He sputtered, "what-what are... you... doing here?"
"Never mind that, Dan, you shouldn't be out here. Haven't I told you not to do this? If you need someone to talk to I'm always here, you know that, right?" PJ rambled a bit, a tone only a parent would give out. PJ was like his mother, though, better than the actual one, and only a guy.
Dan didn't answer, only sighed.
PJ shook his head at Dan and gave up on the situation.
"Let's get you home," he said, "this place is creeping me out."
He put Dan's arm around him and helped him walk home.
Dan was confused on why PJ was even walking out this late. Then again, Dan didn't even know why he was out as well. "This is the..l-last..t-time, promise.." Dan mumbled, loud enough for PJ to hear.
"That's what you say all the time," he replied.
"I-..I know.. Last time..f-for awhile, h-how's that?" Dan managed to laugh through.
They could smile and laugh at this because it's happened before. The only thing that has a recent start was the drinking. PJ was going to make sure it wasn't going to be constant. He didn't care about the walks, he worried, yes, but now that this is happening..
Dan couldn't blame him. Dan himself is worried about his health and mind. He didn't even know the cause, or at least he didn't want to know. They do say ignorance is bliss but could the ignorance be too much?
Sometimes, you need to know in order to fix it. To fix whatever's causing the infliction on you, if that's the case, at least, that's how Dan sees it. Yet, he hasn't done anything to contribute to that; other than letting his thoughts run through his mind; or his choice to haze it out.
PJ snuck Dan back into his house. Though, his parents wouldn't have noticed anyway. They were heavy sleepers, but Dan just thought they didn't care, really. PJ laid Dan down and said good night before leaving out the window again.
PJ was a good friend. A good friend indeed to deal with Dan's problems. Over exceeds his kindness and effort for Dan. Sometimes, Dan wonders if PJ could be doing better things besides trying to fix his slightly broken friend. Not having to worry about him.
That's all Dan wanted though, was for someone to care about him. Yet, he didn't want the hassle for someone to do it. He'd feel selfish.
"Damn.." Dan grumbled.
--
Dan woke up with a slight headache. Luckily PJ caught him at the right time, or a migraine would be taking place. Dan readied himself for the day.
Black t-shirt, black, skinny jeans, and black converse. Just like his mood.
Dan checked his fringe in the mirror before heading downstairs to be greeted with his mother and father happily chatting and flirting playfully.
Dan smiled at them, planning to eat really quick, acting as if his head wasn't throbbing a bit.
"Good morning, Daniel," his mother smiled, but Dan knew this act was all fake. Though, he didn't mention it, or even think further of it. "How'd you sleep?"
Dan hesitated to answer as he sat at the breakfast bar with a plate ready for him. He ate quickly and answered after chewing.
"Alright.."
"Hey, Maria," his father turned to his mother, "mind going shopping for a few things today?"
(a/n: I know it's not her real name. I'd rather not do that. Most of you understand that aspect.)
His mother nodded and sighed heavily before leaving the room. Dan finished up and headed out the door.

Most of his days were fairly like this; normal teasing, bullying; the small funny moments with his friends PJ, Louise, and Caspar; and the boring classes.
Dan wishes something exciting could happen, or something better in his life. Something to fix it, perhaps. Maybe a way to completely start over. But those were just thoughts that would never become miracles in the slightest. Even if there were a God out there to help him, or an angel, they wouldn't help Dan's small problems.
"Hey, Dan," Louise started, as they walked down the halls. Dan looked up to show he was listening.
"Wanna hang out later today with Caspar and Peej?"
"Sorry," Dan answered quietly, "I can't."
Dan already had plans today. He wanted to go back to the park. Only this time he'd be conscious and safe in the daylight. As much as he'd like to stay with his friends, his mind was filled with too much doubt and depressing thoughts of earlier this morning.
"O-Oh?" Louise seemed disappointed, but plastered a quick smile on her face. "It's alright. Sorry that you're busy,"
Dan rolled his eyes and snickered a bit.
"Nothing to be sorry for, I don't see your need to apologize for something of my doing," he replied.
Louise stayed quiet as they continued to walk out of the school. Dan must've hurt her feelings. He didn't mean to. It kind of blurted out of Dan's mouth. He should really think before speaking to the person he's conversing with.
Breaking the silence Louise said her good bye's and left Dan to walk alone to the park.

The sun had settled on the horizon. It was winter after all. It was only five thirty and the sun was setting. Curses for Dan forgetting about the daylight.
It began to get colder and the grass was very stiff and crispy, as it crunched beneath Dan's feet. He sighed and saw his breath as he took a seat on the bench. The back of the bench faced the, oddly, eerie and misty woods.
Dan ignored it and placed an earbud in each ear. He took out his phone and scrolled through his playlist, landing on a familiar name in which whom he'd not seen in years. Troye Sivan. His music was everything to Dan. He was Dan's first friend too, and to see him succeed and how well he was doing without him, made him both proud and jealous.
Dan's eyes closed and he let the music drown in his mind and thoughts.
Suddenly, his peacefulness didn't feel so peaceful anymore.
He felt a chill crawl down his spine. A cold presence. Goosebumps prickled all over his arms and the hair on his arms stood up. Then he saw it. The ghostly figure in front of him - nose to nose.
The figure's eyes were bright and blue, staring into his. He was levitating and sitting Indian style, letting his hands dangle. He smirked and saw the fear in the other boy's eyes as he could not believe what he was seeing.
"You seem fun," the floating figure said, "it's not every day I see a human that has little fear in its eyes to see me."
"W-What d-do you w-want? W-Who are you!?"
The figure snickered and flipped around, being upside down now, letting his hair fall back. "Consider me a new friend," he continues, "or if things go wrong.. Well, I'll leave that to you." He smirks wider.
What has Dan Howell gotten himself into now?
