Chapter Three

Dan

"Because it's what we want to see, and what we want we know we can't-"

Dan turned off the alarm on his phone. He groaned and sluggishly turned over on his back from his stomach - staring up at the ceiling aimlessly. His eyes were bleary and he was calm.

"Morning, Danny boy!"

"AHH!" Dan exclaimed and fell right out of his bed. Phil had startled him, unexpectedly. Phil was still hovering over his bed with a blank expression - except for the raised eyebrow.

"Fucking..Christ.." Dan muttered.

"That's not possible and I didn't know you were into that kind of stuff.." Phil snickered.

"Oh, shut it." Dan sneered and slowly got up.

"What's on the agenda for today, Danny?" Phil asked, following Dan to his dresser.

Dan was already annoyed, he wished it was all a dream, but of course it wasn't. It was just his luck.

What'd I do to deserve this? Dan questioned.

"Well, I have school and no, you are definitely not coming," Dan answered bluntly.

"I kinda have to, a hundred meters sounds like a lot but it really isn't. It's not like I'm going to embarrass you or anything or your friends are going to see me." Phil shrugged.

Dan rolled his eyes. He had pretty much given up at this point. There was no possible way to get rid of him; Phil needing to fulfill his mission in order to get rid of him is all he could do or - better yet - think of. Dan grabbed all of his things for a shower and went to the bathroom. Phil followed.

"Um.." Dan hummed in annoyance. What else did he think he was doing? Dan concluded that he was a total airhead.

"Hm? Oh! R-Right.. Sorry again.." Phil's cheeks turned light blue. His emotions were not that difficult to read, but to Dan, he never payed any attention to that.

Phil stood and waited on the other side of the door. Dan started his shower and stripped down his clothes. He quickly hopped in, only to jump back from the hot water burning his skin. He soon adjusted and felt the steamy water roll down his bare chest.

As Dan scrubbed his hair he couldn't help but drown in his thoughts. Phil was going to see nearly everything that goes on in Dan's life. Dan wanted a different life or something else yes, but he wasn't thinking of this, or even having his privacy invaded.

Dan turned off the shower, dried off, blow dried his hair and flat ironed it, dressed and was ready for another repetitive day. Only this time, he had an unwanted guest.

He exited the bathroom and gathered his things.

"I'm ready, let's go." Dan said as he walked ahead of Phil.

"Aren't you gonna eat? Isn't that unhealthy to not?" Phil questioned, Dan continued as he followed.

"I mean, that's what they say, but I don't have time. Come on."

Phil sighed and followed.

Today was going to be quite interesting.

--

Dan and Phil entered the school gates. Phil was "walking" beside Dan, observing the school grounds.

"Alright, few ground rules if this is what's going to be like," Dan started, his finger pointed to the sky.

Phil turned to him and gave a small smile.

"Stay as far away from me as you possibly can." Dan said very flat and serious.

Phil frowned and knitted his eyebrows. There was no way he could help him this way.

"Got it?" Dan asked.

"Sure.. Whatever.. No promises though," Phil rolled his eyes.

Dan gritted his teeth and heard a familiar voice call his name. Right away, Dan plastered a fake smile to greet him.

"Hey, Dan! How ya feelin'?" PJ waved and grabbed Dan's shoulder.

"Better.. Thanks again by the way," Dan answered.

"You've already apologized and thanked me, it's nothing, bro," PJ said goofily punching his arm.

Dan smiled nervously.
Phil was nearby watching. It was his job of course to get to know his client in order to fix him.

"We'd better get going to class, don't wanna be late." Dan suggested as PJ nodded, walking ahead as Dan trailed behind.

As they entered the school and to their classroom, along the way, Louise and Casper walked with them. They chatted and joked. Though, Dan was still quiet. They all walked away to their classes as Dan entered his.

Dan completely forgot about Phil in an instant - his thoughts crowding everything - school was such a problem filled place. Though, so was home. School was a prison, yet an escape at the same time.

"So, what are we learning today?" Phil whispered and made Dan jump. The bell rang for class to begin and his teacher started writing some sentences on the white board.

"English," Dan answered quickly and grabbed his notebook. Dan dropped his pen and watched it roll all the way to the other side of the room.

"Damn it.." Dan cursed under his breath.

"I got this," Phil said. Dan watched Phil quickly fly over the group of students to the location of the pen. He quickly formed his hands to solid and picked up the pen. A bunch of the students didn't even notice, either distracted or paying attention to the lesson.

Phil was usually clumsy, but in a dash he made it back to Dan and gave him his pen.

Dan was surprised and whispered a thank you to him. Phil nodded and sat criss cross again, hovering and watching the lesson himself.

Dan raised an eyebrow at Phil, staring at him intently. Who is he and why me? Dan thought to himself.

Dan found himself staring too long and Phil caught notice, he hair flipped and smirked.

"Am I just that attractive?" Phil snickered.

"N-No! I-"

"Howell! Who on earth are you talking to? You've interrupted my lesson! Now either pay attention or it's the hall for you." The teacher said, annoyance laced in her voice.

"Sorry, Mrs. M.." Dan apologized and blushed furiously. His eyebrows furrowed and shot a glare at Phil.

All the students laughed as they continued on with the lesson. As if the teacher was on the students' side.

Phil knitted his eyebrows and acknowledging the fact that Dan was not fitting in.

Dan was angry and upset. So much for helping.

--

Dan didn't speak to Phil for the whole day. Phil tried his best to make him feel better, apologizing left and right. When the school day was over and they made it home. Yelling could be heard throughout the walls of the house.

"You're such a selfish, bitch!" His dad insulted.

"Me?! You're the one who asks me everyday to go shopping for drugs for you and alcohol! I do it because I love you! And what I get in return is disrespect. I wish you could stop, why won't you?" His mother averted.

Dan scurried quietly up the stairs to his room and shut the door. He flopped on his bed and held the pillow tightly.

Phil felt like he was making everything worse, but he spoke up anyway.

"Hey.. Dan..?" Phil said, softly.

Dan faced his back to Phil and stared at the wall.

"I'm sorry, I know it's hard. Bu-but trust me, it'll always get better. I mean, look, you have these wonderful, caring friends! They're true family. And I know you probably hate me and all, but just know that.." Phil continued, still looking down, "I'm always here for you to open up to.. Hell, it may be my job..but.. Just know, I'm here. I care."

Dan was furious from that "speech" of reassurance. He knows Phil means well, but he couldn't understand the fact of why Phil did care. He hardly knew Dan. Today was only a small scene of his everyday life.
