Chapter-10: The Actual Heck?

AFTER THE PARTITION with the ever determined 'Spirit,' the day tolled on with the mundane classes until it was the time for the last period. That was AP Biology...and the teacher was one hell of a kind. It seemed as if she had missed her coffee break. That would only explain the crankiness she bore; 'cause unlike any teacher, she began her class lecture with the ear-tethering words,

"Open up your textbooks and copies."

It was good that I had already acquired the knowledge about the topics she was blabbering about. Biology have had held my interest for as long as I could remember going to school and being  introduced with science. Not definitely for chapter sixteen but the essence did. Although, biology comprising of the concerning studies of all the anatomy of human body and whatnot didn't help explain my anxiousness.

My leg wouldn't stop bobbing no matter how much I tried to forbid the action, my mind fogging up with the thoughts of Spirit. I even googled up schizophrenia symptoms in my previous class, two of which matched with mine. Oh Boi.

That didn't settle down quite right for me. Ever since then I was jittery, wanting, no begging the bell to ring any second so I can clear up the mystery about the guy claiming himself dead. I was busy ripping off the nails from their dear places when our grouchy teacher called me out.

"Everything alright with you?" I looked up to find the middle eastern woman staring at me with her eyebrows shot up in annoyance. She was quite chubby and had a snub nose but seemed to come off as a very caring person behind that strict façade.

"Ye-yes Miss, it's just-"

"I know, it's the last class of the first day and I'm starting a little too fast but try to focus, our syllabus is huge."

I nodded discreetly feeling the stares of the students, one of which was Britney's. It was hard to believe she had taken this course regarding the fact that she seemed to be the one who didn't study. I mean, thinking about stereotypical queen bees.

How much more was there to know about her?

After ten more minutes of listening to the endless torture, the bell gave out its merciless tune to which I was probably the first one to get out of that room.

The hallways were crowded with teenagers ready to go home and plan their hangouts and events for the day, while I pushed past them to reach the end of the maze.

I had already texted Mikayla, saying I would meet up with her tomorrow since I had some 'work' to attend. She responded with an emoji that I had yet to see.

The sun was giving out its best today, making me pant under its warm rays. I looked around in search for an informally dressed guy but to my utter disappointment, there wasn't any in sight. As I fanned myself with a flyer, Jaxon surprised me from behind,

''Yo Roaster, waiting to be picked up?"

I gave him a small smile shaking my head, ''Am just waiting for this run away patient who claims to be a Spirit,'' I emphasized on the last words.

''Damn, only you get to meet such people. Mind standing here as your devoted audience to see the poor guy get roasted?'' Jaxon said in a mocking tone while I gave out a small chuckle.

''Well, would have loved the extra support but I see your Mum waving at you,'' I said as Jaxon looked in my direction to find a lady, presumably his Mom, calling him over.

''Well that's my sign to save my dear life, tsk, save me the gory details?'' Jaxon sighed, zipping his backpack. I gave him a small nod before he sprinted across the driveway.

''By the way, this is my old excuse of a sister!" Jaxon shouted in middle of his sprint chuckling all the way before getting hit by his sister. Dear Lord. My face reddened in embarrassment as I muttered a small sorry which no one five feet away from me could have heard.

I took a small spot under the sunshade huffing out in agitation. The parking lot, once crammed up with cars and bikes, was getting emptier as the students left, but there was no sign of the Spirit.

What if he set me up and ran away? I tried to ignore the nagging feeling of 'what ifs' and to start walking back home but my legs wouldn't agree.

It was almost four in the afternoon and the whole school was deserted except for the janitors and teachers finishing up their works. Some even asked me if I needed to call or any help but denying their humble requests, I stuck around in the parking lot. I was kicking the small pebbles on the pavement, counting to ten after which I would definitely leave, when I kicked one too hard that it flew over some distance and fell in front of someone's feet.

Looking up, I saw the Spirit standing there with the same childlike smile. But that smile did nothing but fuel up my anger.

With fast steps I approached the jerk and pointed my finger at him before I spoke,

"You! Where have you been? I have been standing in this blistering heat for the past hour and you show up now!"

"You waited for me," the guy spoke with an emotion I couldn't quite decipher.

"Seriously? That's all you got?" I asked, feeling very stupid for having been waiting for him. Turning around, I slinked my backpack over my back, rebuking myself to have waited for this lunatic excuse of a Spirit.

"N-no, I mean I'm really sorry. Aristotle-"

"Aris-who? Your partner in crime in pestering people?" I spat the words vehemently.

"God, no, my buddy, the dog you saved the other day, remember? I couldn't find him. And when I did, he wasn't doing very well," he whispered the last words sighing.

My mind went blank thinking that night wasn't really a dream and those events did take place.

"Is the puppy doing okay?" I asked as a moment passed, suddenly feeling bad for yelling at him. He did have a valid reason.

"I don't know, I left him at the vet's door, he was very dehydrated when I last saw him. I will check on him again later."

I thought of asking him why couldn't he talk to the vet but then it registered. But it might come out rude if I demanded to prove himself when his puppy was the big priority.

''Okay, let's go see your dog at the vets,'' I concluded.

''Wait, did you not wanna see me-''

''Well, yeah... but I don't think it's fair for you to be here when your dog is sick."'

A smile took over as he scooted towards me. I inched away a bit, my mind still conscious of him being able to hurt me,

''You're kind enough to say that but this will take a minute only.''

''What would take only a minute-''

My question was cut as the Spirit raised his hands, securely covering my eyes. His hands felt very warm for someone who claimed to be dead. Then again, I wouldn't know. It was not on daily basis that I found people come up to me and proclaim, ''I'm a Spirit.''

"Hey, what are you..." my words hung in the air when he moved away his hand. But he wasn't there anymore. Blinking confusedly, I turned around thinking he just moved, but... he wasn't anywhere.

"Pretty shocking, right?" A voice resembling the Spirit suddenly spoke out of thin air startling me as I continued looking around frantically.
