Chapter Three: History? Check Your Search Engine... Maybe Not
The boys made their way to their two story house in the woods and got up to the front door when they heard a loud explosion come from inside. Sans sighed.
“Stars dammit- I was so close that time-” Gaster opened the door, casually watching smoke pour out from the house. “Ah, hello boys, I was starting to wonder where you two had disappeared to.”
“you good, old man? what exploded this time?” Sans mused as if it were a daily occurrence. It was.
Gaster waved it off, or maybe he was waving smoke away from his face. “Oh you know… just another side project to see if we could freely move to other dimensions freely like that yellow fellow. Oh well, I’ll get it eventually…”
“dream?”
“Yes, him-” Gaster nodded quickly. “That’s enough about me though, how was your boys’ day?”
"WELL, SANS GOT ENGAGED!" Papyrus stated bluntly. Either to just be a turd or a happy accident has yet to be proven.
At first Gaster laughed, but as Sans went to hide in his hoodie… “Wait, you are serious? Well, tell me! Who is the lucky someone?!”
"WELL WE WERE HOPING TO GET SOME INFORMATION THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE SQUIRRELED AWAY FROM THE UNIVERSITY'S LIBRARY LIKE ALWAYS ON THE MATTER OF SANS' POTENTIAL DATE MATE!!!"
Gaster tilted his skull curiously. “Information regarding his new date mate..? What sort of information..?”
Sans peeked out of his hoodie. “info ‘bout asgore’s human lineage..?”
Gaster blinked. “You are engaged to a human?”
Sans nodded.
“.....”
He blinked a few times and then sighed. “Come on then, I’ll tell you all I know about King Relegon, Queen Elenore, and King Relegore.” He ushered them inside with magic hands.
Gaster led the boys through the semi smokey house. But they had to wait for a few minutes to clear the smokey lab first before they could get to the library.
Le half hour later….
Gaster waved his magic with his hands to get whatever smoke out of the lab. And as soon as it cleared up, his lab looked like a herd of rhinos destroyed the place….
So… a typical Tuesday?
He gestured to the boys to come in as they stepped over and avoided objects on the floor. They then opened the backroom door and low and behold a whole treasure trove of documents and textbooks EVERYWHERE. And I mean EVERYWHERE. Sans whistled lowly while Papyrus was dumbstruck at how bigger it had gotten…
“Let’s see, let’s see… the King and his human Queen… where to begin…” Gaster hummed as he picked through his organized mess. “Ah! Here we are! M’lady’s journal. Queen Elenore documented everything from her teenhood to the last days of her life. She has fifty volumes in all, I think. This one here, volume four, is the one in which she first met her spirit guide, the late Spirit King, Relegon.”
“WHAT DOES THAT ONE DESCRIBE? SHE IS KING ASGORES' GRANDMOTHER?” Paps asked as he saw an old drawing of a beautiful blonde human woman in the textbook.
“Precisely, Papyrus. That she was. She was absolutely thunderstruck when she found out about our Kingdom, and how her Spirit Guide was the King of our realm. It describes that she felt that there was a reason for that, and dedicated herself to learning about our world. King Relegon did well in balancing her life in the Mortal realm with her life in the spirit realm, at least until she turned twenty-one.”
“WHAT HAPPENED? DID SOMETHING BAD HAPPEN?”
Gaster chuckled at his enthusiasm, it seemed that Sans was also invested in the story, the way he was trying to subtly lean in closer. “A good question. Yes, her parents tried to marry her off to a man that she had no interest in. Per her request, King Relegon brought her to live in our realm.”
“was it her first time here? can humans live in our realm?” Sans asked.
“Long enough to get married. The King had fallen for the human he was supposed to guide, and she loved him back. So, to keep her parents from doing it again, they married each other and she returned to her realm so as not to disturb the balance.” Gaster explained. “The rest of her long life was spent going back and forth between the realms. She earned the title of “The Saintess” from our people and was beloved by all. Her last entry was dated the 12th of October, her 120th birthday. It was the day that King Relegore, their son, accounted that she and King Relegon went to the Heavens for their final rest.”
Sans hummed. “wow… that’s long for a human… so do all spirits “die” when their human does?”
“MAYBE WE ALL DO BUT FORGET THAT WE CAN GO TO ANOTHER PLACE…? HMMM….” Paps pondered.
“That’s very likely, an astute observation.” Gaster nodded his approval.
“WAIT… DOES GERSON KNOW ABOUT THIS OR IS HE JUST HANGING AROUND TO SEE IF HE CAN BREAK A RECORD?” Paps inquired about the eccentric old turtle monster that sold random stuff in waterfall.
Gaster laughed. “Probably! My hope is that he is sticking around to record the happenings after the Queen’s death. But I would not doubt it if it was more for trolling reasons.”
Paps made a disgruntled “UUUGGGHHH!” Then sighed. “THAT WOULD JUST BE LIKE HIM TO DO THAT…. BUT ANYONE OTHER LADY ELENORE… ARE THERE NO OTHER MENTIONS OF HUMANS VISITING THE REALM AND SOMEWHAT LIVING HERE LIKE SHE DID?”
“She has been the only one to come and go as long as she did. Others have come, but not to the extent she has.” Gaster replied.
Sans nodded along, thinking… well, as cheesy as it sounded, he was thinking how romantic it sounded for the late King to be so devoted to his Queen that he would whisk her away to their realm to keep her from another man she didn’t like.
“FATHER, WE WANT TO KNOW WHY WE WEREN'T INFORMED OF THIS IN OUR STUDIES WHEN ATTENDING SCHOOL. I'M SURE THIS INFORMATION WOULD'VE BEEN BENEFICIAL FOR NOT ONLY US BUT MANY OF OUR STUDENTS.”
Gaster sighed heavily. “There is no doubt about that… the curriculums have been changing with the times. The council has decided to pull Queen Elenore’s texts out of the education system for fear that there would be wild ideas of upsetting the balance of the realms.” He explained slowly.
“what is that supposed to mean? they don’t trust us to do our jobs as guides?”
Gaster hummed and turned his head a little. “I think… it is more than that…”
Sans raised a bone brow, his permagrin stretching as he smelled a rat…
“SO WHAT DO YOU THINK IS GOING ON WITH THE COUNCIL? I'M SURE KING ASGORE AND QUEEN TORIEL WOULD'VE HAD A SAY IN THIS. ESPECIALLY FOR THEIR SON. LADY ELENORE IS HIS ANCESTOR AFTER ALL. I'M SURE HE WOULD LOVE TO KNOW HIS HUMAN HERITAGE.” Papyrus chirped as he started to think.
“They are certainly trying to fight against the decision… but you know how these things go. The council is being difficult. Mm… spirits and mortals have always had their differences…”
“MMM, BUT ULTIMATELY THE MORTALS BECOME LIKE US DON'T THEY? AT THE END OF THEIR LIFECYCLE? I SIMPLY CAN'T SEE WHY THE COUNCIL IS ACTING LIKE THEY HAVE A PERVIABLE STICK UP THERE BUTTS AND THINK IT'S OKAY TO LEAVE SUCH IMPORTANT DETAILS OF OUR PAST OUT OF THE EDUCATION SYSTEM!” Sans choked on whatever air he inhaled and tried to be serious.
“well… if they aren’t gonna let us learn important history…”
“Oh, I already enjoy where this is going-”
“let’s bring the history ourselves. as teachers should.”
“... IS PRINCE ASRIEL IN YOUR CLASS SANS?”
“yes he is. plan on bringing him up to speed?”
“OH MOST DEFINITELY~~~!!! NYEHEHEHEH!!!! ALONG WITH THE OTHER STUDENTS. I THINK THEY WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS!”
“alright, i guess it’s time to start bringing new assignments then.”
“THIS SHALL BE MOST INTERESTING INDEED!!! LET THE CHAOS ENSUE!!!! NYEHEH!”
Sans and Gaster giggled, rubbing their hands together like little evil masterminds (gremlins).
“This shall be chaotic indeed, please do tell how it goes!”
“oh ho ho, i will…” He had that Cheshire grin, which considering that he was, in fact, a cat, matched.
Meanwhile in the human world after a few days…
Dianna was now very confused. “Sans even said that it wasn't an engagement gift… but he acted like it actually was…. I'm so confused… Lottie? What do you think? And… is it me or are you buzzing?” She sees Lottie on the couch seemingly jumping in place with the biggest grin on her face while kissing the orange prayer beads repeatedly.
“I don’t know about you, but I think he’s trying to keep it on the down low! And when you least expect it, WHAM!!! He will come out and show his mojo, bro!”
“Pft! You really think so? I mean… in my opinion… he's…. Pretty cute and funny… but if I later want a relationship with him… can I? I mean… is it unheard of? To be with your spirit guide? And so soon? Ugghhhh!!! This is headache inducing!!!!” Dianna had no idea how to handle this. She's never been in a relationship before, little alone with someone like Sans. She's had her own demons to handle for so long that she never bothered to deal with normal relationships or teenager stuff. This was new to her.
Dianna sighed heavily. “I don't know…” she then smiled at Lottie. “How are you doing so far? I mean it's almost been a week and you finally have your spirit guide, how's it feel? Besides being on a sugar rush.” She chuckled as Lottie blushed in embarrassment.
“W-Well it’s great! Papyrus is really nice and he was happy to cook dinner for me so we could talk and get to know each other! Oh, and he loves toys! Especially squeaky toys, and there’s this spot that I can scratch that makes him melt in place!”
Dianna laughed. “By the way, have you talked to him about the “multiple forms” thing? I haven't seen Sans in the past few days so I haven't been able to ask him…”
“Well, not much? I mean, I didn’t want to pry too much on the first day, you know! However! I did ask how many forms they have in all and he said four. The skeleton form, and then three separate animal forms.”
“Huh… ok. I've seen Sans’ cat form… and he said that he was a catfish? But I don't know his last form…. I'm kinda hesitant about his last form though… like something in me is saying that I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley in that form. Although that could just be me…” As Dianna thought about it, her phone buzzed in her pants pocket to notify a text. She picked it up and read it over.
“Apparently Ember and Roland want to hang out. They're thinking about lunch. Out on main street? There's this bar that supposedly has good food. The Golden Ticket? I don't know… I mean we're still teens. You think they'll let us in if we just order nothing alcoholic?” Dianna asked as she was thinking about the offer.
“I’m sure it will be fine! I can text and ask if it’s that big of a deal?” Lottie suggested as she went for her phone to ask. “The Golden Ticket is pretty family friendly during the day, so it shouldn’t be a problem!”
As Lottie texted the group chat, Dianna couldn't help but fuss internally about the Bonding Stone.
‘I mean, does he really see it that way? Do I?! Ugghhhh!!!!’
She felt like pulling out her hair. Lottie tapped her on her shoulder as Dianna jumped practically three feet in the air.
“They said it wasn’t a problem, but I see that bonding stone thing still is?” She wiggled her brows teasingly.
Lottie smirked but still had the air that she would listen. Dianna rolled her eyes playfully but sighed.
“I mean… yeah…. I mean how does one even begin to even… understand that? I'm still processing that spirit guides can have families like us! I have no idea what I'm doing…” Dianna sighed as she walked over to her car and unlocked it.
Lottie bounced after her. “Weeeeeelll, maybe Sans or even Papy does? I mean, you never know!”
As they got in the car, Dianna squinted her eyes at Lottie playfully. “I sense I'm not the only one going through a dilemma.” She started the car and pull out of the parking lot as Lottie started to ramble.
“Oh, well he likes being called Papy! I, uh, it’s short and sweet and he’s sweet and he likes to cuddle and cook and take morning runs with me and he’s every girl's dream– so maybe?”
Dianna snorted. The girl had it BAD. “So yeah… we're both screwed.” The girls laughed at their predicament even though it was anything but a laughing matter.
After a short drive, they arrived at the Golden Ticket restaurant. Roland and Ember were standing beside the entrance waiting for them.
As the girls walked up to them, Dianna looked around. “Where's the twins and Sabella?”
Ember shrugged her shoulders. “Levi and Sabella are working with Mr. Wong at his temple to work out their magic. For some reason it's been bugging them lately. Well more than usual. And Virgo is there for moral support. It's a miracle that Roland wanted to come out at all. Mr. Gloomy has been iffy since last week. Been texting me to bring him sweets for some reason.”
Ember nudged the despondent teen as Dianna finally noticed that he didn't seem right. He was wearing a mouth mask and had bags underneath his eyes. His skin was pale too.
“Roland? You… okay?”
He seemed to blink out of the daze he was in. “Wha- yeah, I’m fine… just a little tired. Can sleep it off later…” He suppressed a yawn.
Dianna had her suspicions but kept it to herself…. For now.
“Okay? Well let's get going.” They went into the restaurant and were shown to their table. As they say down to look over their menu, Roland kept dozing off and almost fell asleep half the time that the friends were talking with each other.
“So what's it like with your new spirit guide? Must be quite something.” Ember asked as she held her chin against her hand.
Dianna smiled. “It's great! Sans is really sweet but can be a turd when he wants to be.”
“At least he’s not a spider…” Roland grumbled.
Dianna raised a brow. “Why's that? I mean, I get that. But what's wrong with spider guides?”
Roland shook his head, leaning into his hands. “No… just nightmares… kinda sick of spiders right now…”
Dianna raised a brow. “What're they about?”
“Um… spiders… tiny little black spiders. Everywhere, all the time… all but one purple one, bigger than the rest. It’s like… she’s trying to tell me something, but I can’t understand. Like I’m underwater or something…”
Now Dianna's alarms were blaring. But not because of the obvious, but because a BIG ASS spider was climbing his arm. All three girls were trying not to freak out but evidently Lottie was close to fainting so Ember did the appropriate thing and slowly got out of the booth and helped Lottie away from the table with Dianna following suit. Roland was giving them weird stares until Lottie pointed at his shoulder. He turned around his head and nearly plotzed. The thing was about the size of a tarantula. He was now panicking but didn't dare move. Until it talked.
“Heya pal.”
