Chapter 3: 10 Months

All Might had asked Izuku to clean Dagoba beach as part of his training to receive One for All. Izuku had gotten started immediately, hauling the rubbish away without using his quirk.

All Might would.. 'encourage' him from atop the things he was trying to move.

Between the training and rest at home, Izuku was studying twice as hard at school. He was determined to keep his top place in the classes grades.

Izuku had noticed Katsuki acting differently. In fact, the whole class had the day he came back to school.

He'd started by sitting at his desk like usual, and the students around him stared oddly at him.

Katsuki came up to him as usual, but stopped upon properly looking at Izuku.

  "What the hell..?" He muttered.

"What is it Kacchan?" Izuku asked, no stutter present in his voice anymore.

Katsuki took a moment to collect himself.

"What the hell happened to you?" He asked.

Izuku suddenly realized why everyone was staring.

"Oh, right! My quirk manifested on Thursday!" He said.

Everyone stared at the previously Quirkless boy.

"I was never Quirkless in the first place. I just had a very specific set of circumstances for it to activate itself." He explained.

Katsuki, now over his initial shock, sneered at the boy, although with little venom in it.

  "And what were those, Deku?"

Izuku stared at the blonde, his agitation making his pupils disappear.

  "I had to die."

Izuku could still clearly see the shock, then horror that spread across the blonde's face.

Katsuki had been nice to him recently too, walking him home from school, bringing him lunch, and just making sure he was alright.

The duo were on their way home when Izuku decided to ask.

"Kacchan? Why are you being so nice?"

The other boy flinched, not facing him.

"What do you mean why?" He asked.

  Izuku shrugged.

"You walk me home, and bring me lunch. You never used to do things like this, so why?"

Katsuki turned to face him, his normally handsome features twisted in pain. Self loathing. And guilt.

"Because it's my fault." He said.

  "What's your fault?" Izuku asked.

"That you're like this! You died to get that quirk, you died because I told you to! It's my fault Izuku! I told you to jump, but I never meant it. I wanted to protect you, to stop you from hurting yourself trying to become a hero. But you did it, and I-"

"It's not your fault!" Izuku screamed.

  Both boys were crying now.

  "It is, I-"

"NO! Don't say that! It was a villain!"

  Katsuki froze.

Izuku continued, in a much more subdued voice.

"A villain got me. He ambushed me on the way home and killed me. A hero arrived a few seconds too late, but I'm fine now." He said.

  Katsuki trembled.

"Do you still want to be a hero?" He asked.

  Izuku nodded.

"Then I'll train you. I'll make you a better hero than anyone else!" Katsuki said.

"U-u-um.. I already have someone training me.." he said quietly.

"What? Who?? I could train you better than anyone else!!" Katsuki exclaimed.

And so Izuku received double training. Building muscle, and combat/quirk training.

The muscle building was hard work, but Sundays were his off days, which meant Sunday was quirk training day.

Katsuki would come to his house, Inko would let him in, and bang on Izuku's door until he came out.

"I know you don't need sleep Nerd!!" He yelled.

Inko smiled, going back to the living room.

"It's nice to see you two getting along again." She said.

Izuku poked his head through the door.

"Okay okay! I'm getting my notebook!!" He said.

"Hurry it up then!" Katsuki growled.

Izuku went back into his room, levitating his notebook and pen to his hand, floating his bag behind him.

"Alright, let's go!" He told his friend.

"Finally!" He said, dragging the spectral boy outside to the beach.

Since a portion of it had been cleared already, the two had decided to use the area to train Izuku's quirk.

"What have you got in that notebook of yours?" Katsuki asked. "I already know you can phase through things at will, and you've got your mum's telekinesis. What else?"

Izuku perked up, pulling his notebook out of his bag. He flicked a few pages, stopping on his own.

"Okay, so. I have telekinesis, I can float a little. If I train that I might be able to just fly. I can create some kind of.. spirit.. fire..? Like this!" He said.

Izuku lit up a white flame in his hand. He suddenly became very tired. He extinguished the flame, checking his feet, which had become transparent.

"The flame uses up lots of energy. I accumulate the energy around large crowds the best, but I'm still not sure how. Am I taking peoples energy? Life force? I'm not sure."

Katsuki nodded. "Okay. Your Telekinesis needs a little work, but it'll do for now. We need to work on your flames."

  Izuku looked nervous.

"What if I lose control?" He asked.

  Katsuki rolled his eyes.

"You just did it now, you didn't lose control then. That's what practice is for anyway."

The duo soon got to work.

Ten months later, and it was the day of the exam. Izuku was stood before All Might, ready to receive his quirk.

  "EAT THIS."

  "huh?"

"You have to ingest some of my DNA, that's how it works! Now eat, or you'll be late for the exam! Eat! Eat! EAAAT!!!"

A lone scream echoed from the clean beach.
