Chapter 36

Virgil's ears pricked up at the tune Roman was humming. He glanced up from his sewing, only for a second.

"What's that you're humming, love?" Virgil asked. Roman shrugged.

"Just something from the Charmings." He said. "Can't remember it fully."

"You're still hung up on 'dear, sweet Cinderella', aren't you?" Virgil teased. "Can't get her out of your head."

"Oh, shush." Roman rolled his eyes. "I'm not hung up on her. I married you, didn't I?"

"You actually haven't." Virgil pointed out. "You just always say we're married to humans because..." Virgil stopped. He didn't actually know why Roman always said they were married. "Why do you insist that we're married, love?"

At only silence for an answer, Virgil glanced up again. "Roman? Love, are you alright?"

"What?" Roman's voice cracked a little. "Nope, yeah, yeah, I'm fine." He jumped up from whittling the wood off a couple of sticks and started wandering around. He was humming again.

"So this is love - hey, I remembered it!" Roman called over his shoulder before resuming his soft singing. Virgil smiled to himself and focused back on his work. It was always calming to him to hear Roman sing. Made it seem like all was right in the world.

"I'm all aglow and now I know the key to all Heaven is mine." Roman was behind him now. Virgil felt arms wrapping around his chest and laughed.

"My heart has wings," Roman pressed a kiss to Virgil's hair, "and I can fly. I'll touch every star in the sky." He leaned down and kissed Virgil's cheek, humming the rest of the song. Virgil couldn't help the grin on his face. "So this is love."

"You're insufferable, love." Virgil said fondly.

"You're stuck with it, my darling." Roman countered. Virgil could feel Roman grinning against his skin. "Come on, you're not actually going to do any more work?"

"I need to start work on the wares for the next market." Virgil protested. Roman tugged the needle out of Virgil's hand. To be honest, it wasn't that much of a fight.

"You have a whole week to do that, darling." Roman said. "You've probably given a toy to every child in the whole kingdom." He then set to work trying to pull Virgil out of the chair. "Come on, you need a break. I've barely had time to talk to you."

"Roman, you've talked to me every day." Virgil said. Eventually, he yielded to Roman's attempts and let himself get pulled out of his chair.

"Yeah but not properly." Roman whined. "I miss your company. Talking to you. Properly." Virgil laughed.

"Aw, you're sweet." He said. "Alright." Virgil wrapped his arms around Roman's neck. "What's on your mind?"

Roman wrapped his arms around Virgil's waist and started to sway both of them slowly. Virgil chuckled and leaned his head on Roman's shoulder. And that's how they stood for a while. Just swaying. Perfectly content.

"I was thinking," Roman said after a while, breaking the silence, "about what you said. How even though we're not married, I still say we are."

"Mhm?"

"Well, why don't we get married?" Roman mused. "Just in human terms. We practically already are. We've got a house together, a ward, our lives work around each other, we click. It all makes sense."

Virgil laughed into Roman's shoulder. "Are you proposing to me, love?"

"If I said I was," Virgil lifted his head to look at Roman, "would you say yes, my darling?"

Virgil felt himself grin again. "Why not?" He said. "We've lived as humans for the past 12 years, might as well make it official."

A grin big enough to eclipse the whole forest found its way onto Roman's face. "Can I kiss you?" He asked.

"Absolutely."

Roman grinned again and kissed Virgil. They were both smiling so it was barely a kiss but it was enough. Roman picked Virgil up and spun him around. Virgil laughed into the kiss and pulled away in surprise.

"Love, put me down." Virgil demanded playfully.

Roman pretended to ponder it. "No!" He said.

Virgil rolled his eyes and kissed Roman again. It was a proper kiss this time, slow and gentle. Virgil's hand was at the base of Roman's head, his other arm still slung around Roman's shoulders. He was practically hanging on for dear life. Roman let out a breath of what might've been a laugh into the kiss. Virgil felt his feet touch solid ground again.

They broke apart only when they needed air. Roman laughed a little again and leant his forehead against Virgil's.

"So it's decided?" He asked quietly. "You'll marry me?"

"Like I said, why not?" Virgil said. "Spend the rest of eternity with someone I love?" He pressed a kiss to Roman's nose, grinning cheekily. "Sounds like a good deal to me."
