Part 7

Logan stared after the young man. He believed he knew of the guy. Patton... what was his last name? Logan racked his brain. Patton Saunders.

He was well-known. A lot of people in Math Club had talked to him. They said he was nice to everyone, and they often had baked goods given to them by him. Even Virgil occasionally had a cookie.

Logan figured that it must have been coincidence that he had never interacted one-on-one with Patton until now. Either that, or layout of classes.

Which brought him to the second point. Patton didn't read as a math person. If Logan had never met him, then he probably wasn't in advanced courses or telescoping, and he probably had little interest in math. So why would he sign up for math club?

Logan had a few ideas. One, he could be trying to get his grades up, two, he could be using it as a way to get on the good side of his teacher, though Logan didn't read him as that kind of person, three, it could have something to do with his Mark, and four, he could be trying to get better at math, or have a friend in the class, or maybe find somebody to cheat off, though Logan didn't believe this was the case. He'd seemed so happy about joining math club... maybe he had a passion for math he'd been unable to fulfill, due to parents or social pressures.

Logan cleared his head and left the room. He'd waited an extra five seconds, to avoid running into Patton in the hallway, seeing as that would be considered awkward, and too much interaction for Logan. His third period was... Physics, one of Logan's favorite classes. Virgil was also in it, giving Logan an excuse to do one of the things he loved: teach an idiot how to do something. Virgil wasn't really an idiot, of course. Anyone who suggested that Logan would fill his social vanquencies with people of a lower intelligence would indeed be the idiot. Virgil was not an idiot, but Physics was a difficult class (or so Logan heard) and Virgil did struggle a bit. Logan frowned. Virgil was actually very intelligent, but his social anxiety and his occasional mental block kept his grades below average. Logan wanted to help him, but after lots of research, he knew that most of what had to be done was something only Virgil could do. The most he could do was be there, occasionally help him with concepts, and refrain from getting frustrated. It was rather difficult, working with someone who seemed to refuse to receive help, but Logan knew that there was a genuine problem in Virgil's brain, and without that, Virgil would in fact be doing exceedingly well. Logan tried to be better than Virgil's parents. He had the thought process based on 'he has a mental illness, a disorder' and less of 'he's a normal kid with problems that chooses not to do his stuff'. Logan knew that mental illness wasn't a choice. He reached the Physics classroom, surprised that Virgil wasn't in his seat. Usually he was much more punctual, art being pretty close by.
