The One Where He Stays.

This is part 2 to The One Where He Leaves so make sure you read that first!

~*~

After Peter had finished crying, Tony showed him to what used to be his room. He had upgraded the bed long ago just incase so it was no longer a crib.

No one had been in that room, Tony always kept it locked so pretty much everything but the bed was exactly the same as it had been the day they left.

Tony helped his son into bed and placed a soft kiss to his forehead, turning the lights off as he left.

He leans against the wall for a moment just breathing.

"Tony?" He looked up and saw Steve awkwardly standing in his own doorway a couple doors down. "You okay?"

"Yea. It's just a lot y'know." Steve nodded as if he understood and maybe he does. But something in Tony doubts that, he can't understand. "I'm sure you guys have a lot of questions."

Steve nodded silently it was hard to see in the dark hallway. Steve's room was the furthest away from where Peters was since Tony's room was opposite it and although they were a team again he still wasn't comfortable with him sleeping so close. So he had not a single doubt in his mind that everyone else was listening from there own rooms.

"I'll explain at breakfast." Tony stood up straight and walked the short distance across the hall to his own room. He placed his hand on the door handle before turning back to Steve. "It's a lot and I don't want to wake Peter."

"Okay." Steve said quietly as he nodded. Tony bid him goodnight before stepping into his room and closing the door behind him.

He leant against the newly shut door and slid down it until he was sat on the floor. He took a few deep breaths and ran a shaky hand through his hair.

"I'm okay." He whispered to himself. "I'm okay. Everything's okay."

"Sir?" Fridays voice spoke up softly as to not startle the man. It made him jump anyway. "Would you like me to contact anyone?"

"No. I'm okay Fri. Promise." He flashed a smile at the ceiling even if he knew there were no cameras in this room.

He stayed on the ground for a few more moments but eventually dragging himself up and into his bed, not bothering to change out of the shirt and trousers he had been wearing.

~*~

Surprisingly, Tony was the first one up. This normally only happened after a night in the lab and that was only because he had yet to go to sleep.

It was six in the morning but it was a Sunday so Steve and Sam skip their run, thus leaving whoever was first to wake up to make breakfast instead of the two early birds.

Most Saturdays it was still Steve and Sam since they were used to waking up early, sometimes Nat would join them. Occasionally it has been Bruce and Thor even Clint has made it once or twice.

But never has it been Tony. Hell half of them had never even seen Tony before noon unless he was on his way to get coffee after an all nighter.

There was a reason for that however. No one ever thought to ask why one day out of the blue, Tony stopped having a normal sleep schedule.

(The same way no one asked why he suddenly invited everyone to come stay at the tower rather then where ever they were staying before. If they did ask they would have been told that Stephen had just left and it suddenly felt way to empty even if they didn't know who he was.)

It was because him and Stephen used to make breakfast together, everyday and every Sunday they would make pancakes.

After Stephen left and took Peter with him, he just stopped. Breakfast was their version of a family dinner, Stephen worked late at the hospital and Tony would normally be in meetings till the late afternoon.

So instead of family dinners they would have a family breakfast.

Which is why the team were so surprised to see Tony making them breakfast.

Clint, to no ones surprise, was the last one to enter the kitchen other then Peter. Tony thought about waking him but he had, had a rough day yesterday so he decided to let him sleep in.

"Woah I didn't even know Tony knew how to turn the oven on." Clint laughed as he sat down, Tony slid a plate with a couple pancakes on over to him as he rolled his eyes.

"Ha ha, very funny Katniss." Tony flipped the pancake he was currently cooking. "I'll have you know I'm an excellent cook!"

"If these pancakes are anything to go off of I have to agree." Sam said as he stuffed another pancake into his mouth. Steve looked down right offended that he spoke with his mouth full.

"I'm glad you like 'em." Tony smiled as he passed another pancake to Nat, who was thoroughly enjoying them, not that she would ever admit that.

Tony let everyone eat peacefully for a couple of moments before he spoke again.

"Peters my son."

Clint and Sam, who had previously been stuffing pancakes into their faces, choked on the food in their mouths.

Steve swallowed the bite he had just taken and opened his mouth as if to say something but nothing came out.

The rest just sat in shocked silence.

"I thought you guys had figured it out?" Tony asked confused.

"We had our suspicions." Bruce may have seemed calm, yet everyone could see that his veins had gone slightly green. "But we weren't one hundred percent sure."

"Don't worry, he didn't know either." Tony smile sadly. "Stephen, my hus-" He cut himself off. "My ex-husband moved out and took Peter with him a long time ago, just after the accords."

"We were planning on telling you guys but everything went to shit and I thought there was no point." He shrugged as if he didn't care but you could see from a mile away the pain in his eyes.

"I'm sorry." Sam apologised as if it had something to do with him and maybe it did.

Maybe if non of the stuff with the accords happened then they would have worked it out and gotten to be a happy family. But they weren't a happy family.

The accords happened so no matter who apologises and no matter who's to blame he still missed his own son growing up, he still missed his sons first day at school or missed him going to his first dance and his first date and pretty much his first everything!

Tony wanted to yell and scream this until someone, anyone could take him back in time and let him do it again.

He didn't.

Instead he said, "It's okay."

It wasn't.

He flipped another pancake to distract himself from the faces staring at him. He could still feel them staring, he could feel them trying to figure out what to say next.

"You can ask why he's here." He turned off the hob and put the pancake on a plate so he could eat it. "I'm not going to get mad."

The others shared a look as if they were discussing who was going to ask.

In the end it was Nat, she just rolled her eyes and asked flat out.

"Why is he here?"

"His other dad had to go away for a while, it's  up to Peter if he says why and Stephen didn't really have any other family. Just an adopted sister called May." Tony took a bite of his pancake and swallowed before he continued. "From what I can tell her and Peter were real close but she passed away a couple months back."

"So you're all he's got?" Clint asked, he looked like he understood what it's like to have no one. Pretty much everyone in the room did and Tony feels his chest ache a little at that.

"Basically." Tony shrugged again, trying to look as if he doesn't care. He does. A lot. "I may not have been there when he was growing up but I have never and will never love anyone more then I love Peter. He's my son and I would do anything for him."

They all nodded to show that they understood and to show support without having to say anything.

No one asked anymore questions, it's not that they didn't have any because they did, they just didn't want to overwhelm Tony and so they continued to eat in silence.

It wasn't long before the silence was broken once again.

"Mr Stark?" A soft voice said from the doorway, everyone turned to look at Peter who was nervously stood there.

Tony had to admit it felt like a kick in the gut that his son didn't call him dad. But then again this was basically the first time they've met where Peter was old enough to remember it.

"Hey kiddo." Tony smiled gently at the boy. "I made pancakes do you want some?"

Peter nodded and slowly moved into the room, he was anxiously playing with the sleeves of his school jumper.

"Take a seat next to Brucie there." Tony gestured to where Bruce was sat. They were all sat around the kitchen island and Bruce was sat on the end with a spare seat next to him.

Normally Thor would sit there but he was in New Asgard making sure everyone was okay.

Peter looked relieved that he was told where to sit and quickly sat down next to the scientist.

"So Pete I know it's a school day tomorrow but I thought that since its been a stressful weekend, you might wanna take the day off and we can go pick up whatever stuff you need from home or we can go get you new stuff." Tony looked nervous as he place a plate full of pancakes in front of Peter. "We also might need to get you some new stuff for your room. I haven't changed it since you were a baby."

Peter tilted his head like a confused puppy. "You're letting me stay?" He asked softly.

"Of course, why wouldn't I?" It was Tony's turn to be confused.

"You guys are the Avengers and I'm just some kid that turned up on your doorstep and them yelled at you and then I cried." His cheeks tinted red in embarrassment. "I'm sure you all have better stuff to do then look after a teenager."  He mumbled as he stabbed his food with his fork.

"You're my son Peter and I love you so it doesn't matter if you yelled at me or if you cried or if we are the Avengers. You can stay as long as you want to be here." Tony pushed some of Peters hair out of his face his voice soft. "And if you don't want to be here then we can sort something out and you can stay somewhere else. It's up to you bud."

"Thanks." Peter paused for a second. "Dad." He added quietly.

The team had never seen Tony smile so brightly.
