Penny's working at the Daily Bugle to make ends meet and to pay for that apartment of hers and to continue to go to MIT.

She doesn't have a roommate.

Her current friend is the sorcerer supreme, AKA Wong.

He's the only adult figure in her life.

BTW Penny is the one who helps Kate Bishop with Kingpin and Yelena, not Hawkeye.

And did I forget to mention Dr Olivia "Liv" Octavius works in the science department of MIT.
