Chapter 22
(I'm baaack~! Sorry for the wait! And before I forget: a special thanks to @thatonewriterlady for the idea! Enjoy the chapter!)
3rd Person
Up in the common room, the Avengers awaited the arrival of their beloved teenager. FRIDAY had notified them that Peter was in the tower, down in the lobby. Stephen and Tony scanned the room one last time to make sure everything was in place.
MJ and Ned, who had been secretly picked up after school by Steve and Natasha, were standing with the Avengers as they waited for their best friend to come up the elevator. They had been at the Tower for a while now and Ned was still trying to not have a heart attack from being surrounded by super heroes. Thankfully for him, MJ kept him in check so he didn't get too side tracked until Peter got to the party.
Once the first batch of kids arrived with Agent Hill, they were ushered over to stand with the Avengers. They giggled excitedly at the idea of surprising Peter with a party. MJ and Ned, who had some experience in helping Peter watch his siblings, got them to quiet down by putting their index fingers to their smiling lips. The kids mimicked them and shushed each other until they went silent. The Avengers watched them in amusement.
The next batch of kids were sent up with Fury, who stood at the center of the elevator with a neutral expression. The kids stood at the sides, watching him fearfully. It didn't help that Fury decided to mess with them when they were in the elevator.
"Which to gobble up first... Which to gobble up first..." He mumbled as the elevator slowly rose, making some of the poor kids almost cry.
As soon as the doors opened, the 8 kids ran out into the common room screaming in fear. They were quickly intercepted by the Avengers and guided over to the others. MJ and Ned comforted them as best they could along with their siblings. Fury let out a dark chuckle as he calmly stepped off the elevator and joined the Avengers who were also laughing. Tony had always joked about kids being afraid of Fury and it was now reality.
Meanwhile, down at the lobby, Peter was leading the final batch of kids into the elevator. Among them were the eldest of the kids, so they followed him in calmly and silently. However, Peter's nervous fidgeting caught their attention and made them nervous as well.
"Alright, FRIDAY. Can you take us to the infirmary, please?" Peter called up to the ceiling, twiddling his fingers.
"Infirmary?" Jeremy suddenly broke the silence he and the others had, making Peter jump. "Why are you so jumpy?"
"Jumpy? I'm not jumpy." He denied, getting looks of skepticism from his siblings.
Peter avoided eye contact with them, intertwining and untangling his fingers. Scarlett took one of his hands and held it, giving him a smile to try to ease his nerves. It worked for the most part and Peter sighed in defeat.
"Alright, I'll tell you guys." He relented. "But you guys gotta promise not to freak out on me."
"We promise." His siblings chorused.
"Okay... This "field trip" is really a trip to the doctors for a check-up." Peter announced hesitantly.
Scarlett, Mark, Tom, Jeremy, Samuel, and both Chrises froze. They all simultaneously made eye contact and nodded before slowly inching toward the doors of the elevator. The next thing Peter knew, they were banging on the doors and pleading for them to be let out.
"Let us out! Let us out! Let us out!" Hiddleston repeated, banging his fists on the metal.
"We didn't sign up for a trip to the doctors!! Help us!!" Robert called, but FRIDAY ignored them and continued to take them up to the common room as planned.
"You guys promised not to freak out!" Peter pinched the bridge of his nose.
"We lied!" Everyone responded simultaneously before continuing their panic.
"So much for having fun at the par-" Mark began to mutter glumly, only to be silenced by Jeremy elbowing him.
While Peter was able to hear him, he was too busy trying to get the others to stop hitting the elevator doors and to stop screaming. What Mark was in the middle of saying quickly slipped his mind. Mark gave Jeremy a "What was that for?" look from behind Peter's back, not having gotten the complete message from simultaneous eye contact earlier. Jeremy just gave him the "Don't say anything" look before joining the others in their feigned panic. Mark then connected the dots, smiled brightly, and followed Jeremy's lead.
As soon as the elevator doors opened, all 8 kids teamed up and pushed the unsuspecting Peter out of the elevator. Peter stumbled out into the common room, only to find the Avengers, his friends, and the rest of his siblings grouped up in front of him with big smiles on their faces. The common room had been decorated festively and confetti began to rain down from above with the simple pull of a rope from Natasha.
"Surprise!!" Everyone chorused.
Peter, who was more than a little startled and confused at the same time, was unable to process what was happening. He looked back and forth between his siblings, Ned and MJ, and the Avengers.
"What- When did you guys- How-" He stuttered, making everyone laugh.
"It's a surprise birthday party, you dork." Robert laughed, punching his arm lightly as he and the rest of the older kids stepped off the elevator.
"S-Surprise party? For me? But my birthday passed already."
"We just went to the park and had a picnic for your birthday! You deserve a real party!" Jeremy frowned.
"Yeah! You didn't even get yourself a cake like you do for us on our birthdays!" Gwyneth added, crossing her arms.
"Besides, Mister Stark and Mister Doctor wanted to celebrate too!" Chadwick chirped, getting a nod of agreement from Letitia next to him.
"And you can't have a party without your best friends coming along." Ned said, doing his complicated best friend handshake with Peter.
"Happy Birthday, Loser." MJ lightly punched his shoulder while he and Ned wrapped up their handshake.
"It was your siblings' job to keep you distracted while we got everything set up." Tony chuckled, placing a hand on Peter's shoulder. "And from the look on your face, it looks like they did a good job at keeping the secret."
"There were some close calls, though." Chris E admitted, sending a pointed look to Holland and Mark. The two smiled apologetically at the others, making Peter chuckle. He should have known.
"Well, thank you everyone. This is just amazing, all of it!" Peter smiled brightly, melting the hearts of the Avengers. As for his siblings, they smiled back, always happy to see their favorite older brother smiling happily. Ned and MJ pulled Peter in for a quick group hug.
"Well, what are we waiting for?" Clint called, gaining everyone's attention. "Let's get this party started!"
At this, everybody cheered and began to scatter throughout the common room. There were several tables completely full of food, seeing as there were super soldiers present, so everyone dove right in. Music played through speakers that were just barely not too loud for Peter's hearing. Peter weaved his way through the party, wanting to mingle with the Avengers, his friends, and his siblings. He had all his loved ones in one place and it was almost overwhelming- in a good way.
While he was at it, he took in the amusing sights of his siblings being just as excited to meet the Avengers again. Their last meeting at their previous orphanage was cut short by Peter having to say goodbye, so not everyone got to meet each other. Peter's favorite was when he caught sight of Mark giving himself a mini pep talk before greeting Bruce.
"Oh my god! He's right there! Okay, okay. Be cool. Be cool. Be cool." Mark told himself before facing the scientist not 2 feet away.
Bruce, having heard the boy's little moment of assurance, smiled kindly down at him. Mark smiled back nervously, unaware of Peter watching and silently encouraging him.
"H-Hi!" Mark stuttered nervously. "I-I'm Mark. I just wanted to say y-you're my favorite Avenger. Can I t-take a picture with you?"
"Of course!" Bruce responded, practically melting at the cuteness.
Mark beamed happily before grabbing Bruce's hand and leading him over to the waiting Peter. Peter, who knew full well what Mark wanted, pulled out his phone and opened the camera app. Peter was the designated cameraman of the family, after all. He was the best in the business when it came to photography.
"Alright, you two. Smile for the camera!" Peter grinned.
The two took multiple photos with different poses, including one with Hulk imitations. Peter laughed along with them before moving along to give them time to talk on their own. He just knew they were going to be great friends.
Soon after that, Peter's camera roll was flooded with his siblings meeting the Avengers, per their frequent requests. He didn't mind, though. Not only did this give him a whole bunch of pictures of both his old and new families, he got to practice his photography skills. He just loved taking pictures.
Ned and MJ took their own selfies with the Avengers, not wanting to disturb Peter from his siblings. That didn't mean they didn't take pictures with Peter, though. Every here and there, they'd surprise him by taking a quick selfie with him either while he was eating or by making odd faces, resulting in ridiculous looking photos that the three would laugh at.
Then, about an hour into the party, Sam pulled out the karaoke microphones. While most of the Avenger groaned at the sight, Peter, Ned, MJ, and his siblings cheered excitedly. Peter switched his camera from the photo setting to record, wanting to watch as this went along.
The Avengers were beyond shocked at just how well many of these kids could sing. Peter smiled proudly as he watched, knowing deep in his heart that these kids were going to be amazing on stage one day.
MJ refused to go up and sing, but Ned had no problem at all with it. He just had to drag Peter up onto the makeshift stage with him and the two were singing their hearts out. Everyone cheered when they were finished, even if they were way off key at points.
As for the Avengers, well Peter had fun watching them at least try. He especially liked Clint's funny parody song about Hawkeye- himself. His siblings were equally as amused, though the younger ones went up to him confused afterward.
"What does getting to second base mean?" They asked, effectively ending Karaoke time.
Stephen and Natasha were thankfully able to swoop in for the rescue by turning the regular music back on and ushering the kids to the dance floor. Peter gave them a grateful look, while Clint was dragged toward the edge of the room by an angry Pepper and Wanda. Pietro went along as well, wanting to watch the poor archer get scolded.
Peter moves on to join his siblings and the rest of the Avengers on the dance floor. Well, more like he was dragged there by his little brothers Chris Pratt and Paul Rudd, but he went along nonetheless.
It may have been the excitement of their first real party, or the ton of sugar they consumed from the dessert tables, but the orphanage kids were dominating the dance floor with all their little hearts. Of course, the Avengers weren't about to let themselves get shown up by a bunch of kids, so they upped their game.
Thus began the most epic dance-off that Peter had ever seen. He stood to the side, recording the entirety on his phone, cheering on both sides. It was a heated battle. While the Avengers were able to pull off complicated flips and moves, the Spiderlings were much more practiced and in sync. In the end, the Spiderlings won and the Avengers bowed down to the Spiderlings, who were cheering happily at their victory. Peter was beyond ecstatic that he had gotten the whole thing on camera.
"Cake time~!" Natasha announced after the excitement died down a little. This earned a round of cheers as everyone began to file into the kitchen area of the common room.
Strange and Tony sat Peter down in front of a large cake. It had vanilla frosting with chocolate streaks that were meant to look like spider webs. Scribbled elegantly on the top with red and blue letters was "Happy Birthday Peter". Above the letters were several lit candles.
"Ready, everyone?" Steve called, gaining everyone's attention. "1, 2, and 3!"
Peter had a teary eyed smile as everyone began to sing, feeling beyond grateful for what they had done for him. They weren't all that in sync at first, but they were eventually. Peter blew out the candles once the song ended and everyone applauded.
Soon enough, everyone was happily eating a delicious slice of cake. However, the Spiderlings had been almost completely spent on energy, so after eating their cake, most of them were sitting on the couches or at the tables. They were trying their best to not fall asleep, but every single one of the adults could tell that they were dead tired and decided to call it a night.
The adults began to clear up at least some of the mess that had been made, while the kids continued to doze off. Peter tried to help clean up, but was quickly shut down by Natasha and Sam.
"Come on, kid. This is your birthday party. We're not going to let you clean." Sam chuckled while Natasha took the broom out of Peter's hands.
"But I-" The teenager began.
"Nope! You're not cleaning, Peter." Natasha smiled, him and Sam walking off to warn the others to not allow Peter to help. Peter sighed, watching them go. Peter felt awkward just standing around while the others cleaned, needing something to do to keep him occupied.
Fury, seeing this, decided to act before the arachnid tried to sneak clean. As entertaining as that would be with multiple assassins and spies around, Peter wasn't supposed to be cleaning.
"Parker, Leeds, and Jones. Wake the kids. Agent Hill and I are going to be taking them back to the orphanage." He ordered, watching as Peter immediately brightened up.
"Yes, sir!" Peter chirped before heading over to the nearest child with Ned and MJ at his heels. The Avengers, who had witnessed the whole thing, shook their heads in both amusement and exasperation. This kid of theirs was starting to prove to be TOO good of a kid. Not to mention too selfless.
"Alright, you guys. Time to head back home." Peter whispered, nudging the kids he passed by gently. Ned and MJ followed his lead, doing the same.
They all groggily got up from wherever they were sitting and began to file in line.
Peter was about to lead them into the elevator in groups, like he had done earlier, but was stopped by Fury and Agent Hill pulling him aside.
"It's alright, Parker. We can take it from here." Fury stated.
"Are you sure? I could help-" Peter began.
"You've done more than enough, Peter." Agent Hill cut him off with a smile.
"But I didn't do anything..." Peter stared at her confused.
Tony and Stephen, having been nearby enough to listen, decided to walk over and join the conversation.
"Trust me, Underoos. You've done plenty." Tony grinned. "The entire party, you were watching over everyone to make sure no one got hurt. You were even trying to help clean right now."
"You're a good big brother, Peter- phenomenal, actually- but it's time you let some of the responsibility shift to SHIELD." Stephen put a hand on Peter's shoulder. "I get that you love them, and you're always free to help them whenever you want, but they're in good hands. Trust us."
Peter took a second to take these words in. He glanced over at the 2 dozen kids, who were standing in groups only a few feet away. Most of them were chatting sleepily to each other, trying not to fall asleep. Even with the drowsiness hanging over their heads, they were having happy conversations.
Peter knew full well that this may have been the best day of their lives. They had a new home to wake up in that was safe and abuse free, they got to party with the Avengers, and they had cake.
This all couldn't have been possible if SHIELD and the Avengers hadn't stepped in. It couldn't hurt to trust them for this one favor... right?
He had his doubts, considering that it had just been a day, but he was willing to give them a chance.
"... Alright." Peter finally conceded, his voice weak.
"Good. We'll be going now, then." Fury turned and led the first group of children into the elevator. Peter waved goodbye to his siblings as they piled into the elevator. They waved back groggily, tired smiles on their faces.
"Excuse me, but Ned and I should get going too." MJ announced to Steve. "Do you mind driving us home? You did bring us here, afterall."
"We don't mind. We're going to have to use the side elevator down to the garage, though." Steve said, gesturing his hand for the two to follow him.
"Thanks for coming, guys." Peter gave his friends a quick hug. "I'll see you tomorrow."
Ned and MJ waved him goodbye as they followed Steve to the elevator across the room. Peter suddenly felt a tug on his sleeve, calling for his attention.
"Is Spider-Man going to be saving people tonight?" Little Tom asked as the second group of kids began to enter the elevator. They waited for him, Hill holding the doors open with her hand.
"You know, that's a good question." Peter glanced up to his two adoptive parents. Tony and Stephen nodded with smiles on their faces before they wandered off. Peter smiled kindly down at Holland. "I guess that means yes."
Tom beamed up at him before going to join the rest in the elevator. Once he was inside, Hill allowed the doors to close.
The remaining kids, the eldest, waited sleepily for their turn, leaning against each other. Hemsworth had pulled the short end of the stick, having to support Scarlett, Evans, and Jeremy. Not missing a beat, Peter took a quick picture of them.
Soon enough, the elevator came back up for them. They said their sleepy goodbyes to Peter as they trudged inside with the waiting Fury. Fury gave me a two fingered salute as the elevator doors closed. Little Samuel copied his action out of admiration, amusing both Fury and Peter.
The elevator doors closed and Peter was left alone with the Avengers, his new family.
Peter turned away from the elevator after a minute, only to come face to face with said family. They were all gathered together and smiling brightly, the reason being unknown to the teenage boy. Tony and Stephen stepped forward, a silver colored briefcase in Tony's hands.
"Kid, I'm sorry, but you can't go out as Spider-Man." Tony suddenly announced.
"What?" Peter blinked.
"Sorry. What he meant," Stephen elbowed Tony for his poor choice of words, "was that we don't want you going out as Spider-Man with your usual suit."
"I whipped you up a little something. It's not perfect, but I figured you and I can work more on it later." Tony grinned as he opened the briefcase, revealing a brand new Spider-Man suit inside.
Peter couldn't believe his eyes. Was he dreaming? It sure felt like it. In the past few days, his entire world had been flipped upside down, If this really was a dream, he never wanted to wake up.
"Is this really for me?" He asked dumbly, a huge smile forming on his face.
"Consider it your birthday present." Stephen smiled kindly, lightly patting Peter's shoulder.
"From all of us!" Clint chimed in, getting a quick glare from Tony. The Avengers ignored him and all gave Peter a thumbs up.
"This is so Awesomely Amazing! Beyond Awesomely Amazing! Thank you so much!!" Peter chirped ecstatically. He then pulled Tony into a bone-crushing hug, much to the man's discomfort.
"No problem, kid. But go easy on my ribs, will ya?" Tony groaned.
"Oops. Sorry." Peter apologized, letting him go. Tony gasped for breath as soon as he was free, making Peter feel slightly guilty. Slightly.
Stephen chuckled and took his turn in hugging his adoptive son. Peter was careful not to use so much force this time. The Avengers then took their turns to hug Peter as well, much to the annoyance of Tony. He was the one who made the suit, so why were they taking credit too? Stephen was an exception, of course, but the others were going to pay.
Once Peter finished hugging everyone, Tony handed over the briefcase to the boy.
"I'm going to go try this on! Be right back!" He chirped, already running off.
"Take your time~!" Tony said with an innocent smile.
As soon as Peter was out of sight, Tony whipped around to face his team members with a fierce glare. The Avengers immediately scattered across the room, not wanting to feel the wrath of Stark.
Thor was the unfortunate sacrifice, getting tripped by Clint and Sam. The poor Asgardian ended up getting run over by Tony. By the time Peter came back, half of the Avengers were either hiding or running, and the other half had been caught and were laying on the floor in pain.
"What happened to you guys?" Peter asked, looking around the room to see the fallen heroes.
"Don't worry about them." Natasha smiled, walking over to the teenager with Stephen. Peter just shrugged and did as told, already starting to get used to the Avengers' crazy antics- at least by a little.
"Anyways, how do I look?" Peter did a little strut as he showed off his new Spider-Man suit, though his mask was still in his hand. He threw in a few poses and even a twirl for the heck of it. The Avengers called out their encouragement from their scattered locations.
"You look like a true warrior at the ready, Man of Spiders." Thor complimented, trying to get off the floor.
"Thanks." Peter laughed before turning his attention to Stephen and Tony.
"Sooo I'm going to be going out for patrol now. Is that okay?" He asked, already knowing the answer. He just wanted confirmation before he did anything. To be on the safe side. This was only day 2 of being their adoptive son, afterall. He needed to know the limits to what he was allowed to do.
"Yeah, go ahead. Just be careful out there, Underoos." Tony grinned.
"Cool! I'll see you guys later, then!" Peter called, racing over to the nearest window. "Thank you again!"
"Try to be back by 2 at the latest. You have school tomorrow." Stephen advised, waving him goodbye.
"Will do!" Peter said, pulling his mask down over his face before allowing himself to fall over the edge of the window.
The last thing the Avengers heard was a very loud "Woooo Hoooo!" as Spider-Man swung off through New York.
