Replacement (1/3)

In which some kid named Harvey comes, out of nowhere mind you, and steals Peter's spotlight. Tony is ignoring him, the Avengers are drifting, and Peter doesn't want to stay at the tower anymore. A little momma love can go a long way.

Peter noticed Harvey quickly. He walked into Tony's lab and saw him standing there, working.

Access to the lab was one of the few good things about being a favorite. You got access to the cool stuff.

Peter felt betrayed that he wasn't one of the only ones. He only felt so betrayed cause he didn't know this guy!

"Hey, Mr. Stark," Peter says, faking a smile. "Who's this?"

Tony mumbles for a moment before speaking up and saying, "this is Harvey. Really good at science and medical stuff. Thought he'd be a good hand."

Peter stared at Tony in bewilderment, "and he's allowed in your lab?"

"Well, yeah! He's a good guy, good at science."

Peter felt like he was being tuned out a little. He turned around, making some excuse to leave the lab.

Normally, leaving the lab he'd be excited or exhausted from working. Today, he walked out feeling meh. Being meh.

He sat on the couch and watched TV before standing up to go home. On his way out, Nat stopped him.

"Somethings wrong," she points out, as observant as ever.

Peter shook his head, "nothings wrong, Aunt Nat."

"You're lying to me."

Pete sighs. You can't hide anything from Natasha. Nothing goes over her head.

"It's just that Tony got another intern or something," Peter says, turning to face Nat. "I don't know why but I feel left out."

Nat gives him a look and spoke softly, "maybe the kid's just a faze. Just wait it out for now, you're Tony's favorite teenager, after all!"

Peter started at her, not really sad or mad or anything really. He nods, "I'll try to be friends with him, Aunt Nat. Thank you. Bye!"

Peter left the tower, thankful to Nat. He knew that while Auntie Nat was around, Peter would never be left alone when sad.

When he got home, he went straight to being Spiderman. He did that till 11, studied till midnight, and then went to sleep.

Peter woke up feeling better than when he was at the tower. He went to school, hung out with Ned and MJ, got punched by Flash, and went to his Stark Internship.

When he got there he went straight upstairs to the lab. It was in his routine to do that. Peter was shocked at what he saw when he got there.

Harvey and Tony were sitting next to each other, Tony showing Harvey what to do like father would to a son.

Peter almost wanted to scream but he realized something. Tony wasn't his dad and even if he wasn't, he couldn't control Tony.

Peter couldn't make Tony pay attention to him or love him or anything. Tony was his own man and Harvey was his makeshift son.

Peter felt sad at this revelation but figured it was true. Peter would just have to survive sharing the spotlight, he'd be fine.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Stark! Good afternoon, Harvey!" Peter exclaimed, faking a smile and a happy voice.

"Good afternoon, Peter," Peter bears Tony mumble. No 'don't call me Mr. Stark, call me Tony'.

Peter hummed and went over to his station, a small table in the corner with supplies littered over it.

When he got there is was clear. There wasn't even a spot of dust. Peter grew concerned.

"Mr. Stark?" Peter called out. He saw Tony glance up at Peter and when he saw the look of confusion and the empty desk he looked back down.

"Oh, yeah, kid. Harvey... well, Harvey got your desk. After you left really early yesterday I realized he needed a place to work. Don't worry, you can go down to the lower labs and work there," Tony explained dismissively.

Peter stared for a moment, completely dumbfounded. His fingers fiddled with his backpack straps.

After a second too long, Peter smiled again, the smile to reaching his eyes and said, "got it, Mr. Stark. I'll just go then."

Peter left after that. The moment he walked out of the lab, he frowned. Peter dropped his backpack on the couch and went to find Nat.

When he checked in the kitchen he ran into Clint. The man was making a sandwich for an early, light dinner.

"Hey, Clint," Peter said.

"Hey, Petey. How are you?" Clint asked.

"I'm good. Do you know where Aunt Nat is?"

"Afraid not, Spideyboy. She might be training so I'd try there. Good luck finding her, though!"

Peter nodded, said his thanks, and left to the practice room. When he got there he noticed Nat training with Steve.

At the sight of Natasha, Peter's mood brightened and he yelled out, "good afternoon, Aunt Nat and Uncle Steve!"

"Peter?" Nat asked, turning to face Peter. "Did something happen today?"

Steve gave the two a questioning and concerned look, "did something happen?"

"Nothing happened," Peter responded quickly.

"Stark got a different kid working with him. Harvey or something," Nat cuts in. Peter and her share a look, a silent argument.

"Oh, Harvey! I know him! He's awesome!" Steve exclaimed, a smile taking over his face.

Peter huffs and leaves the room, angry and sad. Nat doesn't say anything to Steve before she followed after him. Steve doesn't go after them.

Peter and her sat in her room after that. Nat never lets anyone in her room but she let Peter in because he needed someone.

The next two weeks passed by following the same thing. Peter would come to the tower, he'd go over to the lab hoping maybe Harvey wouldn't be there.

Harvey would be there and Peter would notice more and more of his touch in stuff missing. Then Peter would leave to find Nat, mad and sad.

He'd usually find Nat training with someone or in the kitchen, talking with someone. When she saw Peter she'd always, always make an excuse to leave and take Peter to her room.

They grew closer, a lot closer. Peter and the other Avengers though, they grew farther. Peter didn't want to talk to them because all they would talk about was Harvey and what Harvey did.

When May left on a business trip and didn't want Peter to be at home all alone, Peter didn't want to stay at the tower all week with Harvey.

So, Peter asked Nat if she could ask Tony to give her an apartment for her to stay in. Peter told her she didn't actually have to stay there, just let Peter stay there.

Nat agreed and she stayed in the apartment. She decided she would take care of Peter like she would her own child.

One morning, Peter woke up with a call from Ned. He picked it up groggily.

"Peter, what's with the silence?" Ned asks.

Peter mumbles, "huh?"

"You haven't texted me, called me, or anything! I figured you were upset about something but dude, it's your birthday today!"

"Oh, Ned!" Peter jolted up, not hearing the birthday part of it. "Guess what? I'm living with Nat for the week!"

"Nat? Like Natasha? Like Black Widow?! Awesome!"

"I know right?!" Peter exclaimed. Any tiredness he felt when he first woke up was gone.

"Okay, but it's your birthday and we've gotta hang out today," Ned continued.

"It's my birthday?" Peter asked and checked the date. "Oh, my god, it is! We should hang out!"

"That's what I just said. Anyways, we're definitely hanging out at your place so text me where you're staying and I'll come over with your present."

"Got it. I'll ask MJ to come too."

"Okay, see ya."

"Bye."

They both hung up. Peter sent Ned his address before texting MJ while he was walking to the kitchen.

"Hey, Aunt Nat?" Peter asked.

"Yes, Peter?" she responded.

"Can two of my friends come over? It's my birthday and we want to build legos and hang out together."

"Of course, Peter. Also, it's your birthday? Happy birthday! We should go out to dinner at your favorite restaurant."

"That'd be cool!"

Nat smiled at him and went back to what she was doing, making pancakes. They sat in silence, Peter excited and Nat happy.

"Need any help?" Peter asked.

Nat shook her head and when the doorbell rang she smiled and said, "have fun."

The two went to their room, MJ being on her way. Nat stayed in the kitchen and was about to call Peter and Ned for breakfast when she got a call.

"Where are you?" demanded a very angry Tony. Nat felt the poison of anger on her tongue.

"Why do you care?" she retaliated, not caring what Tony would do if she didn't give him a straight answer.

"You better get here. Now. It's Harvey's birthday and we're all celebrating."

Nat could hear muffled voices and questions of who Tony was talking too.

"Oh, really now? It's Peter's birthday too and I'd rather spend today with him than Harvey."

"Is it Natasha?" asked a voice.

"Yes, she's being rude, difficult, and stubborn," Tony responded.

"Give me the phone," said the voice. Nat hoped it wasn't someone trying to convince her to come to the tower because she wasn't going to go there.

"Nat? It's you right?" Pepper asked. She had been on a business trip like May was on but she came back earlier.

She had come home to Harvey but no Peter and Nat. She was a bit worried and couldn't care less about Harvey until she found the two of them.

When she contacted May and was told that Peter should be at the tower, she got even more worried.

Tony wouldn't give her any answers and she knew she wouldn't get it from the rest of the team. Harvey was all they thought of now.

"It's me," Nat said. "Don't try and convince me to go and celebrate Harvey's birthday though, I'm not going to."

"Harvey? No, no, no. I am worried about you and Peter. Where are you guys? Is Peter with you?"

"Peter's here. He's hanging out with Ned because it's his birthday."

"It's his birthday?! I can't believe I almost missed Peter's birthday! Wait a moment, I'm coming to you guys."

"Got it," Nat responded. The call ended and soon, Pepper was at the door. She arrived at the same time MJ did.

The thing about MJ always being really calm and collected, always secretly caring about her friends and stuff did not matter here.

MJ looked like she was going to pass out. She was standing right next to the Pepper Potts. It was amazing!

Peter ran to the door and stopped when he saw Pepper. His pause was short though because he quickly ran up and hugged her.

Pepper whispered into Peter's ear, "we'll fix this. I promise you, we will."
