The Most Beautiful Soul
The parking lot was almost empty.
Yoongi was right about the broken fences and no entry signs. There were high metal gates with navy blue covers over the rings. All the fences were bent toward the top and had a few holes along the sides. The concrete June stood on had fading lines where the cars would park. The lot itself was spacious, and crickets filled the void of sound. A total of five cars were in the vicinity, and all five of them were broken with smashed out windshields and missing headlights.
Yoongi had his gauntlet on and the same clothing from before hugging his body. June could see the tangerine stickers on the side of the device. Their orange color popped against the black and white the rest of the night had. June wished he could smell them too; the lot smelled of fading smoke, likely from smokers who had come earlier to get a secret spot to do their sacred drugs.
"I'll give you one more chance to back down," Yoongi said. "Don't make me hurt you. You have a wonderful life ahead of you, June. Don't waste it over something like this."
"Over a new universe where you're kidnapping innocent people and taking over their lives? I'm not going to stand by and watch you mess with what we don't understand. You're hurting Jin, can't you see that?"
No answer came. Yoongi cracked his neck, and June could hear each bone popping out and back in as if the noise was right next to him. June trembled from the cold breeze that blew through the air. The moon got covered by the cloudy sky, which created a shadow over the two.
Then, Yoongi sprung into action.
The distance between them was twenty feet. Yoongi made it ten, then five, then four, then three. By the time he made it too close, June hopped away and used his webs to grab onto the fence and send himself flying. He created more distance and watched as Yoongi adjusted himself.
June shot his webs. Yoongi blocked them and dodged any of the ones going at his feet. June kept up his barrage of webs, but Yoongi powered through them without missing so much as a step.
The gauntlet threw itself at June's position. He fell from the contact. The metal hit his chest and sent him to the pavement. June's back screamed in pain as his legs refused to move. Yoongi got on top of him with his gauntlet raised and ready to fire another punch.
Without thinking, June used his webs to attach to Yoongi's legs. He pulled with all his strength, which caused Yoongi to stagger. That gave June the opportunity he needed to duck away from Yoongi's attacks. He got to his feet, but he stumbled from the force of the punch he had received.
June shot a web and grabbed onto the car. Before Yoongi could react, June dragged the vehicle forward and hit Yoongi in the back. Yoongi fell to his knees. June closed the distance and slammed his fist against Yoongi's jaw. Yoongi's head snapped back, and a grunt left his lips.
June didn't let up. He punched again and again, not giving Yoongi the chance to recover. Blood squirted from Yoongi's nose. His lips gained cuts. His cheeks became bruised. June exhausted both Yoongi and himself with the endless spree of attacks, but he couldn't land the finishing blow that would knock Yoongi out.
Yoongi's gauntlet caught June's fist. An echo of metal meeting flesh bounced around the empty lot. June's hand whimpered from the contact, and it felt as though his bones were shattering and cutting the inside of his flesh.
In a flash, the battle had turned in Yoongi's favor. June found himself on the ground with Yoongi back on top of him. The gauntlet raised. June had his arms pinned by Yoongi's knees. There were no ways to escape.
June had a plan, but he couldn't do it unless he was free from Yoongi's grip. He couldn't do it unless he had a chance to duck behind the car to his left. He couldn't do it unless he fought back, but strength left him in that moment. Yoongi had knocked it out of him, and despite his mind being a violent storm of chaos, he couldn't break free.
Punch after punch came. His mask got torn at the bottom and revealed his lips. His neck became swollen to the point where he couldn't plea for mercy. His legs were battered from the force of Yoongi's body on his. There wasn't an inch of skin that was left untouched.
Blood spewed from his mouth. Consciousness waved to him as he bent his head down and accepted darkness. Then, the weight of Yoongi disappeared. His eyes fluttered and saw the world seemed a tad bit brighter. Whiter, almost. Like there was a heavenly glow wrapping him in a winged hug.
June's mask was gone, but his suit stayed on so only his face was revealed. Yoongi had disappeared, but the strength June had didn't return. He felt confined to the pavement as his eyes searched the area, attempting to find what had happened. Why was he alone? Where did Yoongi go?
"He practically did that punch in slow motion," a female voice said. "If you can't even block that, you're gonna be one shitty superhero."
Tears dripped down June's cheeks as he stared at the approaching woman. She had full lips and a smile that healed his wounds. Her dark locks shaped her face, showing off her sharp cheekbones and clear skin she got from her father. She walked toward him and knelt, brushing a strand of his hair back so he could see her.
"Hey Jeon," Aviva whispered, and June sobbed.
"How... why..."
"Shh, just listen to my voice."
June agreed, and he waited as she came closer and stroked his hair. The consolation made him close his eyes. His mouth parted and let out soft breaths that soothed his aching lungs. The silence didn't bother him, but he wanted nothing more than to tell Aviva everything.
How and why she was there evaded him. Part of him didn't care. The very sight of her brought him more warmth than he could have ever asked for, and he relished it. He swirled it around his tongue until it drowned him in ecstasy.
"What's going on, bunny? You should've beat him ages ago," Aviva said, and her voice tickled his ears with joy.
"He's too strong."
"No, he's not. He's hurting, just like you."
"I'm not, I'm fine."
When June opened his eyes, he saw Aviva gazing at him with a frown. It felt miraculous to see her on her legs instead of in her wheelchair, but he didn't question what was happening and did his best to enjoy the moment.
"Oh, bun," she murmured. "You need to let me go."
Moisture clouded his vision. He blinked it away, but it kept coming back. He found himself bawling in front of her. From his spot on the ground, he was sure he looked pathetic.
"I can't."
"You have to."
June shuddered. "Why?"
"You don't realize that the reason you're sad is because you love me. It's okay, you can let go."
Screams threatened to fall from his tongue, but no words formed in his mouth. Instead, he peered at the woman he had fallen in love with. There were no versions of her out there for him. His version of her was gone, and there was no way to get her back no matter how hard he prayed. No matter how many times he had called her, not once had she picked up.
"But I'm not strong enough."
The protest felt weak as he said it. It weighed down his tongue and made his throat feel clogged with regret. Aviva didn't comment on his words. Her hand stayed tangled in his hair, brushing them and keeping him calm.
"Maybe," she said, her voice soft like a lullaby. "But there are people depending on you. People you care about. They believe in you. I believe in you. Can you believe in yourself too?"
June curled his hands into fists as new strength flowed through him. His bones reignited. His veins shot adrenaline straight to his heart. Fire hid behind his eyes. He spat out blood on the concrete, then nodded.
"I never stopped believing, Jeon. Not for a second," Aviva said, and June chuckled. He readied his web shooters and ensured his body was good to go before he shook her off.
"Aviva?" he asked, and she hummed. "It's Park."
Consciousness snapped back into him, and he was back where he had started. Yoongi was on top of him with his gauntlet high, about to come down and end June's life.
That time, June fought back.
He swept his leg free and kicked Yoongi off him. He rolled over and got to his feet, his web shooters armed. A web fired. Yoongi got whacked in the face with it, and he fell back. With his gauntlet, he pried the web off his skin, but not before June pounced.
Yoongi barely managed to knock June away. June sprung behind the car and used it as cover. All he had to do was enact his plan. He grabbed Yoongi's phone and planted it by the flat tire, then pulled up the recording he had Jin do. He set the timer and rolled away, firing more webs to distract Yoongi. Yoongi ducked and dodged. Yoongi had more strength, but June waited. One second ticked by. Two. Three. Then...
"Yoongi! Yoongi, help!"
Jin's voice broke through the air, and Yoongi stalled. His eyes bulged, and June thought they'd burst out of his skull. Yoongi whipped around in the direction of the car. Yoongi's phone hid behind it, blasting the recording of Jin calling for help.
The plan worked. Yoongi was distracted, which gave June the opportunity he needed. June tackled him. They went back to the ground, but this time, June was on top. Punches bashed Yoongi's face over and over until he was in worse shape than June. Broken and battered, Yoongi hyperventilated as June grabbed the gauntlet and smashed it off the pavement.
June did it over and over until sparks flew and the weapon was destroyed. He raised his fist and glared at Min Yoongi. One more punch and it'd be over, the man would fall unconscious, or maybe die depending on the force June exerted.
His fist stayed in the air. Yoongi closed his eyes and didn't put up a fight. June had rage swirling in the pit of his stomach. So much rage that he felt his venom preparing itself to strike. His teeth poked against his mouth. Anger took over him, and all he saw was red.
Before he could act, Aviva's smile flashed in his mind. He heard her voice, and the words she had said not long ago. He remembered the feelings she had brought him, and all his wrath disappeared. His fist uncurled itself, and his venom tucked away. He slid off Yoongi and stood, brushing himself off.
The defeated man coughed and choked on his own fluids. June held his hand out for Yoongi to take, but he never moved. He tilted his head, but that was the most June saw.
"Why?" Yoongi asked in a trembling, weak voice.
"Unlike you, I don't kill to get what I want. We're going home, but first, we're going to free the people you kidnapped."
"I can't go back. Please, don't make me go back."
"There's nothing more I can say to you to convince you to move on. You need to learn for yourself. Now don't make this worse. Will you tell me where Yoongi is or not?"
Yoongi's eyes grew heavy. Words failed to fill the void. Quietness carried on and burrowed itself inside June's chest. He waited and waited as the bloodied Yoongi coughed. Tears washed grime off the broken man's face. It took Yoongi an eternity to clear his throat, but when he did, a single word passed his lips.
"Yes."
