Into the Storm
Jungkook made Yejun close.
He used the excuse that an emergency came up, which was technically true. Yejun believed him but made sure he knew he owed her a crate of strawberries, which was apparently her addiction nowadays. Strawberries for her were like cartons of banana milk for Jungkook. If she went longer than two days without them, she'd go feral. Granted, Yejun went feral over a lot of things, but still. It was a normal occurrence. Like the time she instinctively barked at a picture of Pedro Pascal's thighs. She was an interesting woman, that was for sure.
Jungkook had his spider suit on, his web shooters strapped around his wrists and squeezing the skin there. The fabric of the suit rubbed against his body as he flew in between the buildings and searched for the bank. This was it. His decision. Going inside the portal could destroy him. Or it could save him. It all depended on what was inside, and if there was a sure way to know before going in.
At this point, Jungkook was used to the bank. He saw the familiar flash of police lights waiting outside. He swung toward it, ducking and diving inside without a care in the world for his own safety. His shoulder ache was gone, replaced by a stiffness that he'd have to do exercises to get rid of. The rest of his body was sore from working out so often, but he chose to focus on his mental state rather than his physical.
As soon as he landed inside, he saw personal security fighting the criminals. The lead man with the gauntlet was tearing through them. None of them were killed, only knocked back and passed out. Jungkook knit his brows together from under his mask, searching for Doctor Jung only to see him slumped against one of the benches in the waiting area.
Jungkook went to him, feeling his pulse. A breath passed Jungkook's parted lips when he felt a few bumps. He backed up and let the unconscious doctor rest. It was now or never. Which side would Jungkook choose?
The criminals ploughed through the security Hoseok requested. There were police officers inside as well, but they were in the same state as the personal security. Jungkook didn't want that to be his fate, so he revealed himself to the group before they could sniff him out.
"You said I had a week," Jungkook said, the lead man shifting his head to stare.
"Have you made your decision?"
"Have you?" The lead man tilted his head at that. "You're breaking into a bank over and over again, hurting innocent people who are just trying to do their jobs. Have you killed them too?"
"I don't do killing," the lead man was quick to reply.
"You have a gauntlet on that knocked me out. Me. I have super powers, these men don't. You're risking killing them by being here, and for what? This choice you think you have to mess with the balance of the universe? We don't understand this thing, and we shouldn't pretend like we do. Alternate universes? A multiverse? This was never heard of until now and you're acting like it's perfectly normal."
"This portal is the first shred of hope I've had in six years!" the man shouted, and Jungkook froze at that. The anguish resting inside the man's tone was all too familiar.
He was just like Jungkook.
"So forgive me for wanting to do whatever I can to get what's mine back!" The man motioned to the two others by his side. "Go set it up. Romero, guard the spider."
"I wasn't going to say no," Jungkook said. The lead man went still. "I... I want to come. I think you know why." The man dipped his head in what Jungkook assumed was a nod. "I just can't morally agree with your tactics. I'm supposed to stop criminals, not join them."
"When's the last time you made a decision for yourself?" Silence was the answer. "You have been living for the world, not for yourself. It's not selfish to want something. It's not selfish to fight for it."
"Then why does it feel like it is?" Jungkook whispered.
"You have the weight of the world on your shoulders. I wish I could say I understand what that's like, but I don't. No one knows except you. The only known superhero in existence, and you're stuck protecting the people and keeping your identity hidden to protect the image you have. For years, you've been nothing but selfless. It doesn't make you wrong for making one decision for you. Not for your neighbor, or your friend, or for the world. Make a decision for yourself."
"People rely on me to protect them. I vowed I wouldn't let them down. I..."
"You're not perfect," the man said, and the emotion pushed into his tone caused Jungkook to tremble. "No one is. Not even a superhero."
"I used to hurt people. They weren't bad people, I just wanted to feel like I had power over them. And now since I actually do have that power, I..."
"Want to protect people? To redeem yourself?"
"It's never enough," Jungkook said, tears pouring out his eyes and staining the inside of his mask. "I hurt too many people. No good deed I do will ever make up for that. I was a bully. I hurt..." Jimin was the name he didn't say. Jin was the name he didn't dare utter. Angelina was the woman he didn't want to drag into his mess. Even when protecting them, he hurt them. All because he couldn't see his flaws and mistakes earlier. All because he was far too selfish to ever see the monster he was.
"I hate to cut this conversation short," another man said, approaching. "But they're sending more cops. We need to go. Now."
The lead man brushed the comment off, then motioned to Jungkook. "Follow us. The portal is safe, we know that. And deep down, I think you know that too."
Jungkook couldn't bring himself to disagree. Together, the criminals and Spiderman went inside the vault. There were bombs placed on the glass, wires connected to them and a detonator in the hands of a man standing off to the side. There were no gadgets or tech around the area. It was barren except for the swirl of light known as the portal.
"This alternate world is safe," the leader said, taking the detonator away from his subordinate. "In order for us to access this portal, that means there has to be a return portal somewhere. I'm going to give you a tracker to put on your wrist. I had my team design it." The leader handed over a wristband that had lime colored lines spiking on the screen. In a way, it looked like a discount Fitbit. "When the line spikes, you know you're close to a portal. Or something with a similar energy signature, but that would be near impossible is my guess. We've never seen anything with this kind of energy before."
"And when we go in, where do we go?"
"That's the part we're not entirely sure of. We're not sure where we'll get dropped off, so we'll need to look and identify where we are."
"This is an alternate world, right?" Jungkook asked, resulting in a nod. "Then there's no way we can rule out that they aren't in a civil war right now. Or a world war. What if we're jumping into a world worse than ours?"
"Then we pull out as fast as possible. Get behind the vault, we don't have time for this."
They agreed, hiding behind the walls. The man did a countdown. After three seconds, the world seemed to shudder. The explosion went off. Jungkook yelped from the loud noise hurting his heightened senses. The others gave him a glance, but the lead man dragged them away and to the exposed portal.
Now, Jungkook was wincing. It seemed as though wind was blowing all around him, but it wasn't wind, exactly. It was like it was pulling him in. His feet were stuck to the ground, but the others were inching toward it uncontrollably. The lead man grunted as he got dragged toward it, but he used his gauntlet to keep himself steady.
The others went flying to it since they were caught off guard. Two of them were sucked in. Admittedly, it didn't look like it caused them any pain. All they did was morph through. They evaporated through the swirl of colors and lights, disappearing from view.
"You need to let go," the man said as more of his partners got pulled in. Soon enough, only the lead man and Spiderman were left remaining. Jungkook wasn't sure why he was still here. Why was he holding on? No one else was.
"Are you sure?" Jungkook asked, his voice cracking in the process.
The leader was groaning, his gauntlet creating a dent in the floor. The entire room was a mess of cracks and dents. It seemed like something straight out of a horror movie, and Jungkook found himself trembling.
His feet were squeaking against the ground as he grew closer to the orb of death before him. The man's words bounced around the insides of Jungkook's mind. He said no one was perfect. Not even Jungkook. Why was that not an answer Jungkook could accept? Why did his heart still jump and his brain still fry at the thought of not being perfect? Of not being good enough.
Tears threatened to stream down his cheeks. He managed to hold them back, but the leader was getting closer and closer to the storm. The leader eased up his grip, glancing up and seeing Jungkook still hesitating.
"Let go, Jungkook," the man said.
And that was what caused Jungkook to make his decision.
In the blink of an eye, Jungkook let himself go. His grip on the ground weakened, his muscles feeling frail. The lead man went inside. His body disappeared from view. That left Jungkook alone. With his thoughts, with his body, and most importantly, with the portal. It was right in front of him. His future was in front of him, in a way. Aviva was in there. Jimin was. Taehyung was. All that was left was going through.
And then, Jungkook loosened his grip and fell inside.
