BETTER OFF !
IMAGINE !
o. YOU WONDER IF YOU'D BE BETTER OFF WITHOUT PETER . . .
━━ 🕸️ ━━
The simple red and white patterned restaurant tablecloth seemed to be taking more of your attention than it should have. The air was cloudy with the haze of evaporating puddles of rain, headlights being the only things that you were able to see.
He didn't have a car, and there was no telling if the teenager was going to show up or not. You had your doubts, considering he had been canceling plans left and right lately. It began with simple, postponed study dates, then dates. At this point, you wouldn't be surprised if he even postponed your relationship.
You could practically hear the clock lightly ticking in the background despite the constant and loud chatter bouncing off the walls. The small noise was starting to mimic the sound of your nails tapping your plastic cup. Fluorescent lights irritated your eyes in the slightest bit, it could have possibly been the tears pricking at your eyes, but you had no idea now.
The feeling of being second best always managed to creep up on you, knowing that despite his soft, loving nature, he didn't focus on what was in the moment. Peter was entirely hung up on what would happen to things in the future, what tomorrow looked like, what would happen if he didn't prepare for the non-existent mission Tony Stark had for him.
The sight of the familiar yellow backpack made your heart speed up, not knowing exactly what to say to the boy now sitting across from you. A part of your heart wanted to be with him, but the other believed you'd be better off without him.
❝Hey y/n, are you alright?❞ His curious voice didn't convince your eyes to lock on him, but instead, stay on the table. You nodded, lips not parting in the slightest bit. Peter immediately knew something was wrong when you refused to look into his eyes; let alone pull your hand away when he tried to hold it from across the table.
You lightly cleared your throat, staring at the front door of the restaurant. It was fairly easy to tell that the sky was beginning to paint the pavement with a multitude of freckle-like drops of water. Furrowing your eyebrows, you finally met Peter Parker's worried brown eyes.
The realization had just hit you, and there surely was no way you could simply brush off your thoughts like dust on an old book. The tapping on your glass mug started up again, nerves twisting in your stomach as you realized what you had to do.
You never failed to break eye contact with Peter as you spoke, seriousness in your voice as sadness filled your eyes. As time passed, his emotions started to spin around, wondering how he could have ever allowed things to get this bad. ❝Please believe me when I say that I love you, but I think - it would be best if we parted ways for a little bit. With your, uh, internship and the responsibilities you have, maybe we'd be better off.❞
Peter's lips parted as if he was about to speak, but nothing came out. His eyebrows curved in a sad expression that you had never seen before, which made your heart break even more. Breaking up with someone you had loved and still love is the hardest thing to do, but if things get too complicated, it's best to leave. At least, that was what you had convinced yourself of before you arrived at the restaurant.
The hurt and regret in Peter's eyes were enough to make your gaze move back to certain places and pieces of decor in the crowded room. ❝I'm sorry, Peter. I really am, but you're focused on your career, and I feel like I'm holding you back. I'll see you around.❞
You didn't hesitate to get up from your spot and leave, making sure that you left some money and a tip for the waiter before you left the rather large building. A part of your heart wanted to go back to him, but the other felt like you were simply just being pushed to the side.
You had no idea where you were inside your emotions. Your feet carried you to Central Park, which happened to only be a few minutes away from the place you had just left half your heart in. You took a seat on a nearby, empty bench, watching the tree leaves rustle in the light wind.
Raindrops started to fall onto your soft, exposed skin. You didn't mind if you ended up getting sick from the cold rain, but you believed that maybe being covered in raindrops would wash all your worries and problems away. Maybe you were better off with your thoughts covered in raindrops.
