Chapter 2: Orphans and Orphanages

"Tony Stark-Rogers if you don't get out of the lab right now I'll hide all of your coffee."

"Steve, it's barely even seven, I doubt any of the orphanages are going to be accepting visitors this early." Tony replied from his worktable. "I've nearly finished this update for FRIDAY. I'll be half an hour at the most."

Steve merely shrugged in response, "there'll be less traffic if we leave now. Besides, you're the one who wanted a kid. I wanted a cat, they're a lot less work."

"Five more minutes?" Tony asked, barely even looking up from the holograms projected in front of him. "Also, cats are a lot more work, kids can at least clean up after themselves."

"Tough luck, lets go," Steve replied. He grabbed Tony's arm, basically dragging him out of the lab. They entered the elevator and FRIDAY took them down to the garage where an assortment of expensive cars awaited them.

——-

"Where are we headed first?" Steve asked, fiddling with his fingers.
——-
Tony thought for a moment, "there's an orphanage in Forest Hills." The garage door opened and the car rolled out onto the busy streets of Manhattan. "It's about forty minutes away."

"It's a good thing we left early then isn't it?"

"I will literally punch you."

"Can you reach that high?"

The rest of the drive was in silence.

They had almost arrived at the orphanage when a young boy suddenly sprinted across the road. Tony slammed the brakes on and blared the horn, hurrying to get out of the car. The boy was on the ground, looking slightly dazed.

"Kid?" Tony asked as he knelt in front of him, "kid, are you alright? Are you hurt?" The boy looked up at him and his eyes widened, recognition clear on his face.

He quickly stood and almost fell backwards again when his eyes landed on Steve.

"Hey, calm down, son. Are you okay?" Steve asked, giving the boy a concerned look. The kid looked back at Tony for a moment before he took off, sprinting down the road and into an alley.

"Do you think he's alright?"

Steve shrugged, "probably. I mean, he just ran off so I doubt he's hurt.

"I suppose so," Tony frowned as he got back into the drivers seat. Steve mimicked his actions and they continued their drive to the orphanage.

After a short while, they arrived and the couple got out of the car, glancing up at the building in front of them.

"Well," Steve started, "I pity the kids who live here."

Tony looked up at the dirty windows and the crawling vines that covered the walls of the building, he pointedly chose to ignore the dark alley way covered in trash bags. "Well hopefully someone won't have to live here much longer," he said as he climbed the cracked stairs that led to the front door.

Steve followed Tony, "I hope so."
