Chapter Eleven - Weird Kid

In the prison's yard Rick, Carol, Daryl and T-Dog are getting the cars inside the yard.

"Alright, let's get the other cars in. We'll park 'em in the west entry of the yard." Rick said. Daryl nodded, "Good. Our vehicles camped out there look like a giant "vacancy" sign!"

"After that, we need to load up these corpses so we can burn them."

T-Dog sighed, "It's gonna be a long day..."

Hedley came out of nowhere suddenly, making T jump a little. The boy had his crossbow over his shoulder but what was really interesting was that he had a snake on his arm.

Everyone freaked.

"Get that away from him before it bites him!" Carol ordered Daryl.

"Where the hell did ya get a snake?" Daryl asked the boy.

Hedley pointed to an area.

"Put it down!" T yelled.

Rick's eyes were wide, "It doesn't look venomous."

"Doesn't mean it aint!"

"Put it down." Daryl said to the kid.

Hedley shook his head, hugging the snake to his chest. The snake just flickered his tongue before sliding up Hedley's arm further.

"Fuck, ya one weird kid." Daryl muttered before rubbing his forehead.

Rick took a step forwards, kneeling down to Hedley but keeping a good eye on the snake, "At least put it back. He probably has a home, and it doesn't wanna be gone long. And if it's a girl, she probably has eggs to look after."

Hedley tilted his head, unsure.

"You don't wanna keep her from her babies, do ya?"

The boy made a noise, shaking his head.

"Good boy. Go on and put the snake back."

Reluctantly, the boy did so, going over to where he found the reptile and carefully put it on the ground and watched as it slithered away.

"Where's Glenn and Maggie? We could use some help." Said Carol.

"Up in the guard tower." Said Daryl, eyes pulled away from the strange kid.

Rick frowned, "Guard tower? They were just up there last night!"

They all looked at the top of the guard tower.

"Glenn! Maggie!" Daryl called.

Glenn came out of the tower, he had no shirt on and was buttoning his pants. "Hey! What's up guys?"

The others laughed at the sight of Glenn. Daryl smirked, "You comin'?"

"What?"

They kept laughing. Hedley looked at them with a confused head tilt.

"You comin'? Come on, we could use a hand!"

"Yeah, we'll be right down!"

Carol, Rick and Daryl walked toward the cars, still laughing, but T-Dog saw something and pointed it out - which made Rick's smile disappear. The two prisoners, Axel and Oscar, were out of their cell block, walking towards them.

"That's close enough." Rick ordered them from behind a fence. "We had an agreement."

"Please, mister." Axel said, "We know that, we made a deal." Hedley, Glenn and Maggie arrived when he said, "But you gotta understand! We can't live in that place another minute, you follow me? All the bodies, people we knew! Blood, brains everywhere! There's ghosts!"

Daryl saw Hedley and tugged him back when he got too close to the fence for comfort, "Why don't you move the bodies out?"

"You should be burning them." T-Dog added.

"We tried! We did!"

"The fence is down on the far side of the prison. Every time we drag a body out, those things just line up. So, hump in a body and just running back inside." Explained Oscar.

Axel was almost pleading, "Look! We had nothing to do with Thomas and Andrew, nothing! You trying to prove a point? You proved it, bro! We'll do whatever it takes to be a part of your group, just, please, please, don't make us live in that place!"

Rick shook his head, "Our deal is not negotiable. You either live in your cell block, or you leave."

Oscar whispered to Axel, "I told you this was a waste of time. They ain't no different than the pricks who shot up our boys." He looked at Rick, "You know how many friends' corpses we had to drag out this week? Just threw 'em out like... Those were good guys! Good guys who had our backs against the really bad dudes in the joint like Thomas and Andrew. Now, we've all made mistakes to get in here, chief, and I'm not gonna pretend to be a saint, but believe me... we paid our due. Enough that we would rather hit that road, than to go back into that shithole."

Rick looked at Daryl, who answered with a shake of his head.

Daryl locked the prisons back into a fence further away, before going back to the group to talk about options. He looked at Hedley, "Go and play with Carl or somethin'."

Hedley narrowed his eyes at him.

"This discussion ain't right for a kid. Now go."

Hedley folded his arms.

Daryl rolled his eyes, "Well, go find more snakes or catch frogs, whatever, just go on and let us handle it."

The boy whined, stomping away and towards the tall grasses where he'd found the snake.

Carol smirked at Daryl when he came back to the group, "You've got your hands full."

"Kid thinks he's older than he is sometimes."

"That's what kids do." Rick said, "I'm dreading it when Carl becomes a teenager."

"You might need to make it up to him." Maggie said, watching as Hedley sulk.

Daryl sighed in defeat and called to the kid, "Yo, Spider Monkey! Wanna ride the bike?"

Hedley jumped up and sprinted to Daryl.

"Looks like he's been forgiven." T-Dog smirked, nudging Daryl.

"Move the cars to the upper yard. Point them facing out." Ordered Rick, "They'll be out of the way but ready to go if we ever need to bail." He then turned to T-Dog, "We'll give the prisoners a week's worth of supplies for the road."

"Come on." Daryl said to Hedley before going to get his bike as Carol got one of the cars.

As the others got the cars in position, Daryl drove with his bike, Hedley sitting in front of him, caged in Daryl's arms as he held onto the archer's wrists. He was shrieking with glee as Daryl revved it.

Axel and Oscar watched from the sidelines as Daryl made his way through, pausing as he waited for T-Dog to open the gate.

"Twin cylinder, is that a Triumph?" Axel spoke, trying to get a say.

Daryl ignored him, "Don't even look at it."

"Didn't want it bored out? Sounds like it could use a tune-up, I'm pretty handy with the grind!"

T-Dog opened the gate.

Hedley giggled when the bike revved again.

"Cute kid too. My sister was a teacher for the special kids so-"

"Shut up, man." Oscar said to Axel.

Daryl ignored them still, speeding off with his bike, Hedley's screams of joy radiating the courtyard.

The group is trying to clean and organise the surroundings of the prison in order to be more comfortable living there. Glenn, Rick and Daryl get out of the prison by a hole in the fence.

Daryl stopped Hedley from tagging along.

"Go back. I need ya to help Carl with Lori and Hershel."

Hedley was about to reject the offer, but Glenn then came forward, "Can you do me a favour?"

Hedley tilted his head.

"Can you go check on Maggie for me? She's been upset about Hershel lately and I wanna know if she's okay."

After a moment, Hedley nodded and dashed back to the cell block.

Maggie, Beth, Carl, and Lori were helping Hershel to take a walk in the courtyard by the time Hedley got to the entrance to the prison.

Lori, supporting him, said, "I got you here if you need it."

Beth smiled at her dad, "Just take your time on those steps."

Hershel ignored the encouragement and said, "You cleared all those bodies out? It's startin' to look like a place we could really live in."

"Hey, you watch your step. Last thing we need is you falling." Said Lori.

"Keep going, daddy. You're doing good." Maggie smiled, which only brightened when seeing Hedley. "You okay there, Spider Monkey?"

Hedley reached into his pocket for his cards, flipping through them before showing her, 'Maggie'. 'Okay'.

"Yeah, I'm okay. Why ya ask?"

'Glenn'.

"He's so overprotective." She rolled her eyes jokingly.

Just then, Glenn's voice called out, "Alright Hershel!"

They saw Glenn cheering and Maggie waved happily to him.

Beth smiled, "You're doing great, daddy."

"Ready to race, Hershel?" Carl joked.

Hershel smirked, "You give me another day, I'll take you on."

Maggie laughed, everybody's smiling.

But they couldn't have one good day.

Suddenly, a herd of walkers appeared, and Hedley spotted them, tugging Carl's arm before pointing to the undead.

"Walkers! Look out!" Carl yelled.

Rick and the others see the walkers. Rick ran towards the courtyard but was forced to go around the fences.

"No!" Rick yelled.

Lori shot a walker, while Hershel tried to run away with Beth and Carol. Glenn had to close the fence before running to the courtyard too. Rick and Daryl were going as fast as they could. Hedley shot his arrows before having no choice but to abandon his crossbow and take out his handgun. He flinched at the sound, whimpering as they vibrated his skull. Walkers fell but more came through to replace the fallen.

"Get out! Get out of there! No! Lori!" Rick screamed.

"Hedley!" Daryl yelled, "Run!"

Beth and Hershel were going inside the prison. Beth opened the door. "Daddy, behind you!" Hershel pushed the walker with one of his crutches before finally getting the door closed. Glenn was done closing up the fence and started running as fast as he could towards the courtyard. The entrance of the courtyard was locked, and Glenn had the key, Daryl and Rick were blocked.

"The lock! Hurry up, the lock!"

"That gate is open!" T-Dog called.

Maggie opened one of the doors leading to the prison. "Lori! Here!"

Lori pulled Carl and Hedley with her as they entered, door slamming shut behind them.

They walked through the many tunnel-like hallways.

They were about to turn into their cell block when another herd of walkers came crashing through.

They go back, Maggie leading the way. Hedley made a cry; Maggie pulled him to her as Lori pulled Carl. "In here!"

They went into a storage room, locking the door, and looking around for any blind spots. Nothing. They were safe. Until.....

"Something's not right." Lori announced, hand going to her belly.

Carl looked at her with fear, "Are you bit?"

Lori shook her head, water gushing from between her legs, "No, no, no, no, no. I think the baby's coming!"
