Chapter 21

[ New York ]

"Any sign of the convoy?" Peter (Tobey) spoke into his earpiece, scanning the area.

They were actually doing this. In truth, they would do anything that May would ask. But still, it's kind of crazy that they were on the other side of the law.

—Well, as if the law really considered them to be on their side, anyways.

And now they were watching intensively at Park Avenue, to see if their was a convoy carrying the man known to many as Peter Parker. However, it didn't seem to be the case for now.

"Uh... no. I do not have visual on any sort of convoy on Park Avenue." Peter (Andrew) responded back.

"What if the girl's operating on a hunch?"

"It's the best thing we got right now. We either run with it, or we don't."

"And if she's wrong."

"You're being overly pessimistic right now." Peter (Tobey) mentioned, looking closely onto the streets of New York.

"Well, I hate wasting my time, you know? There's so much things you could do in like... say seven minutes."

"Yeah, like delivering pizza..." Peter (Tobey) muttered.

"What was that?!"

Peter (Tobey) ignored his response, as he saw a flash of blue and red lights in the corner of his eyes. They were moving at tremendous speed for a car in New York, as they were passing red lights with ease. Over time, a group of citizens and cars were actively cussing them out for cutting them without signalling them.

}{—}{—}{—}{—}{

That only confirmed it. It was the same feeling when he detected Peter (Andrew) at the trial. This was the person they were saving, and they were going to throw everything they got at it.

"On your three o'clock, convoy's on you." Peter (Tobey) alerted, getting ready to jump.

"Seems a bit late, don't you think?"

"Better late than never." Peter (Tobey) loosened his grip to the glass and readied his feet. "Remember the plan, we meet at—"

"Yaddah, yaddah, yaddah... I got it, dude. We've been over it a dozen times." Peter (Andrew) shook his head, facing the direction of the convoy.

"If you don't meet me at that convoy,"

"I will!"

"I'm moving!" Peter (Tobey) told.

Meanwhile...

"Jeez... that guy." Peter (Andrew) shook his head while his earpiece was off. "He's overthinking it."

Letting lose with his grip, Peter (Andrew) bounced off the roof and into the streets of Manhattan.

"—WOOOOOOOHHH!!!"

Peter (Andrew) followed the sound of the now echoing sirens of undoubtedly the police. There were crowds of people that were forming on Park Avenue—showing that their discreet moving of Peter Parker wasn't going so well.

They hadn't checked whether there were going to be a whole lot of security. When they meant discreet, they thought about a few police cars. But with the sound as if it was being played throughout the entirety of Manhattan.

At this point, they just had to see.

"I'm almost there!" Peter (Andrew) shared, moving past the tall buildings to stay out of sight. "You?!"

"Stuck in a bit of traffic!" Peter (Tobey) replied.

"Hurry up, you have thirty seconds!"

"Oh, now I'm on a timer?!" Peter (Tobey) annoyingly cited, swinging quicker to get in position.

"You hear that?!"

"Hear what?!"

"A hell lot of police!" Peter (Andrew) turned a corner and now lowered himself onto the street.

He joined into the line of cars that were following the main car in the middle. They hadn't spotted him yet, but he was dangerously close to being to. The people on the streets were pointing to the skylines, to where he was. He was just thankful that the cops weren't paying any attention to them.

Looking ahead, Park Avenue was running out of road. If they managed to get on the bridges, they were done. There would certainly be more support out of Manhattan—which meant this was their best chance.

—However, he didn't know if they were sharing the same thought.

"We're running out of line! Where are you?!" Peter (Andrew) sounded off, trying to keep up.

"I'm almost there! What's the situation!"

"They're about to reach the bridge! If they reach that, we're done!"

"And you?!"

"JUST HURRY THE HELL UP!"

There were about five turns left until they were out of Park Avenue. It was now or never.

"Four turns left!"

"I'm coming out of the third!"

—Out of nowhere, Spider-Man (Tobey) crashed himself onto the police cruiser in front of the van holding Peter (Tom).

"Holy shi—" Peter (Andrew) stopped and shot his web at the back of the car.

He pulled it, turning the car sideways and causing a massive traffic jam on the road. All the cars came to a halt and they kept on piling on one another. This caused the cops to be unable to exit their own vehicles, as they were that close together.

Peter (Andrew) landed on the roof of the van and sat on the edge of it.

"Sorry, guys! Didn't mean to make rush hour!" Peter (Andrew) signalled at them, as they kept on trying to get out.

"They're not going to explode, right?" Peter (Tobey) asked as he landed on the van.

"Don't worry, police cruisers are tough. It'll take a while." Peter (Andrew) happily noted, dangling his feet off the van. "You might want to talk to Peter (Tom) soon though, I won't be able to hold them off for too long."

"Wa—wait, me?! When did we decide that?"

"Just now... and I decided that." He returned a smug at him, which he couldn't ignore.

"I should get some input on this."

"Well, too late! I already gave him the pep talk a few nights ago, so why won't you have a crack at it."

"But, I—"

"Less talking, more..." Peter (Andrew) thought as he stood up, "talking, actually. Come on—chop, chop!"

"I hate you." Peter (Tobey) jokingly remarked.

"C'mon! We don't got all day here!"

Peter (Tobey) pulled with all his might on the van door which ripped off easily. Two men immediately aimed their weapons at Peter (Tobey), but was quickly disposed off by Peter (Andrew). He webbed the weapons from above and threw them aside.

"Gentlemen," Peter (Tobey) announced, as the two guards stepped outside of the van. "Thank you."

"You two?" Peter (Andrew) pointed at the both of them, "Smart guys... we appreciate it."

Peter (Tobey) stepped inside the van, seeing the lonely teenager holding his hands together and looking down. He looked disappointed—almost sad they were there. Peter (Tobey) didn't even know if he knew they were there, as he didn't even give a glance.

Peter (Tobey) was skeptical of breaking him out, but he was sure that it was the right thing to do now. Seeing his face—all the anger, disappointment, dissatisfaction, and hatred bottled up in one gesture. If they had not done this, then he would have really given up the mantle of Spider-Man.

—He experienced it once before, he didn't want to see another go on that path for good.

"Peter..." Peter (Tobey) awkwardly said, stumbling inside the van. Peter (Tom) still hadn't given a look. "Hey, I know you hear me."

"..."

"Your Aunt May sent us to get you, so..." He sat across from him, who still hadn't said a word. "We would appreciate if you'd tag along."

"..."

He clasped his hands, hoping to get a response from him. He looked like he'd cry if he wasn't there, which wasn't encouraging. To be frank, Peter (Tobey) wasn't good with social interaction—one of the few traits he wished had been solved by that Spider Bite (unless he counted his symbiote phase). But, he was going to muscle through this.

—After all, it's the fate of the universe they were talking about.

"You know, in my universe, Uncle Ben had a nice set of flowers in the backyard. I would see it every time I went out to throw out the trash. It was all these fancy flowers—dandelions, roses, and a bunch of other ones I can't pronounce. One time I walked up to him and asked, 'Uncle Ben, why do you have all these flowers? Do you plan on selling them? They're kind of getting in the way of the trash.' To this day, I remember his face. It was a face of sincerity and just... plain joy. He put his hand on my shoulder—you know how he is—and he told me, 'it's for May.'"

—With that, Peter (Tom) acknowledged him by looking up to him.

"Then I said, 'what do you mean it's for Aunt May? She doesn't like flowers, does she?' Then he told me that he knew; he knew that May didn't have a particular love for flowers. But he thought it was pretty, and maybe someday, she would come to like them. So everyday, he would water them with no fail. It was... it was non-stop. But w—when... when Ben died, May was the one who had continued watering the flowers. Everyday, now she was doing it—without fail..."

Peter (Tobey) seemed to reminisced too much, as there were a few tears of memories that streamed off his face. Noticing his emotions, Peter (Tom) silently spoke.

"Why are you telling me this?"

"I... I don't know. I just thought it was c..." Peter (Tobey) paused. What was he saying? There was a reason he was saying this. He couldn't have been speaking about nonsense now. He knew in his heart, he said it for a reason. "No. I'm telling you this because even though May didn't particularly like flowers, Uncle Ben did something that was so unselfish that May had to continue it. He did that everyday. He didn't know if it was worth it... but in the end, May had came to like it. He didn't give up, Peter... he didn't give up."

"..." Peter (Tom) was now looking in his eyes, fulling attentive to his words.

"The city of New York needs you. They may not be particularly warm to the idea that you are Spider-Man, but it's your city. I've only came to know the two of you—Peter's—but I have to tell you, it's like we're destined to do this. No matter what universe, we once lived a life of being Spider-Man. You've been Spider-Man for less than five years now... my question to you is—is this where your story ends?"

—A gasp.

"Will you give up? Is this how your story plays out? You ending up in jail for a crime that I know deep down you didn't commit? Will people remember you for this." Peter (Tobey) tightened his wrist. "Or are you not done playing out your own stories? Are you not done protecting this city that you've been protecting ever since the—"

Suddenly, the van shook a bit that it caught their attention. Speaking of which, they had been so immersed in their conversation that they had stopped hearing the bullets that were echoing outside.

Staring at the open door, a head poked out from above. Peter (Andrew) was looking inside the van and spotted the two Peter's comfortably enjoying themselves.

"Hey, I don't want to interrupt the session, but there's like two dozen police cruisers shooting at me, so—"

Peter (Tobey) interrupted, "You're the one who told me it's my turn. You don't mind buying us a couple of minutes, do you?"

"I see it now." Peter (Andrew) jokingly nodded. "I hate you!"

Sighing as Peter (Andrew) left the sight, Peter (Tobey) returned to their conversation. Peter (Tom) was now sitting upright, biting his lip about returning to being that cursed figure he had seemingly rejected the night before.

"I... I still don't know." Peter (Tom) shook his head at him.

"Him and I have lost a lot of people that we love... we didn't want you to lose anyone you love without putting you in danger. But... without you, this doesn't feel like a fight for your universe." Peter (Tobey) explained and tapped him on the shoulder. "And besides, your MJ and May told us that three of us is better than two. So... I'm asking you—no begging, to join us and save the world."

Peter (Tom) sighed. He had been running away from this the whole time. Those long months of trying to avoid Spider-Man—it kept on coming back. So much so, he had accidentally opened the Multiverse while doing so. Opening that danger to his universe was inexcusable—much more so that he had left the job to two of his variants thinking that it would be all right.

Now, he had seen it in himself. He had to take that suit again—and maybe for good this time. He couldn't keep on running. This was his moment.

No more running. No more hiding. No more giving up. This time, he had to face his fate. He will be Spider-Man, and this time for good.

"Alright." Peter (Tom) stood up, and extended his hand. "Let's go and save the universe."

Peter (Tobey) took his hand and stood up alongside him. "Welcome back, Spider-Man."

"For good this time." Peter (Tom) assured, stepping forward out of the van.

As they both entered the street, a bunch of unconscious cops were laying down on the tarmac of the street. Peter (Andrew) landed beside the two of them, glancing at his counterparts.

"You two got together well?" Peter (Andrew) happily questioned.

"I got the job done, right?" Peter (Tobey) chuckled. He then saw the knocked out police on the street. "You got to work, huh?"

"All they needed was a little knock on the head to get the job done. Nothing too special."

"So," Peter (Tom) turned to his variants. "Where are they?"

"Um..." Peter (Tobey) tilted his head. "May told us to regroup so that you can get a suit. We'll probably find them after a while."

"And where are we regrouping?"

"..." Peter (Tobey) stared at Peter (Andrew) to confirm it, which he did. He looked back at his variant, "Bleecker."
