My Fault

Two Weeks Later

Peter was sitting in the room that had been given to him in the Avengers Compound. School was going to start again tomorrow. They had been given a break after half the universe had disappeared.

He was looking at the computer, looking at the list of his classmates. As he went down the list, it panged him to see who had disappeared. Ned, MJ, Betty, even Flash had disappeared. Cindy and Abe were still alive.

Somebody knocked on the door and Peter minimized the document. "Come in."

Carol entered the room. "Can we talk?"

Peter gestured to the couch as he rolled his chair away from the desk. Carol sat down and looked at Peter. "Why don't you want to go to school?"

Ever since Carol had saved Peter from space, she had become quite protective of him. Peter leaned back. "Both of my best friends were decimated. I only know two people at Midtown now."

"So, you would rather stay here all day with the people who failed to stop the decimation?" Carol raised an eyebrow at him.

"It wasn't their fault," Peter scowled at the ground. "Mr. Stark told me to be as safe as possible. I hardly fought at all. Maybe if I had fought, we would have won."

Carol put her hand on top of his. "Peter, don't blame yourself for this. None of this is your fault."

Peter jerked his hand from hers as he stood up. "How do you know that? I'm the only one who didn't fight. I could've, but I didn't!"

"That doesn't mean it's your fault! Stark wanted you to stay out of it because he cared about you! Would you really have fought knowing that he didn't want you to?"

Peter gestured randomly. "I... don't know." Peter sat on the bed. Carol rose from where she was sitting and settled down next to him.

She pulled him into a hug. "Don't blame yourself for this, Peter. You did what you could."

Peter buried his face into her shoulder. "Sorry I yelled at you."

"It's fine."

"Am I interrupting something?" Peter pulled away from Carol to see Steve standing in the doorway.

Peter blushed that Steve had seen them hugging. "Uh-"

"No," Carol replied a little to quickly.

Steve nodded. "Dinner's ready. You guys can come down whenever." Steve left the room and closed the door behind him.

Peter looked up at her. "Thanks, Carol."

"No problem."
