Chapter 23
After my hearing came smell. This to was different then my human or vampire scent detection.
I could smell everything. I could smell everyone in the room. I recognized the scents but there were some that I could only guess at.
The ex owners of the house certainly. The two deliver men from Action Rental. The bed I lay on was covered in scents. Human, dog, a neutered cat, even a bird. Worse there was the smell of urine and séx but some one had cleaned the bed with a lavender soap. I smelled baby powder but it didn't come from the bed. I smelled the mice. If I had had control of my body I would have shuddered in revulsion. I hated mice and rats.
I next found the taste of bile and blood. I would have wreched if I had been capable.
I didn't know if it was my blood or the blood from the bag I had drank. It was old, dead. The bike was biter. I wanted to move my tongue and work up saliva so I could spit the vile taste from my mouth. I hadn't gained that ability. My body still refused to obey even that simple comand.
I was adrift in the dark. It was loud, smelled of mice and urine, and tasted of bile and decaying blood.
The good thing was that I didn't feel pain or see them as they watched live out my personal hell.
I knew something was coming. My crawling skin started to feel tight. It seemed to shrink and then stretch over bones that were half formed. I can't pinpoint the moment that the feeling became pain.
It was not just my skin that crawled. My muscles and tendons moved. My bones snapped into place.
The pain of the fire or the ice would have been a blessing at that point.
It wasn't until the pain attached my face that I passed out.
I woke. I didn't feel any pain. I was scared that if I moved I'd trigger pain and have to go through it all again. My lungs seemed to work. I was breathing. I could smell everything. I could hear. I still tasted the vileness in my mouth.
Oh, God, my mind screamed in my head, I can't see. I can't see.
"She's awake." Breea said softly.
I heard paper shuffling, a thump. "She's - Are you sure? - she's not moving." Beth whispered concerned.
Breea gave a small amused laugh. "I'm sure. Her heart sped up when she woke up. Just give her a minute."
I waited. I felt so blissfully pain free I just wanted to reveal in it a moment before I chanced moving.
You can move before you give the humans a heart attack. Breea voice said in my head.
I jumped. My eyes popped open. I had never heard anyone in my head that wasn't a vampire. I opened my mouth to ask her how she did that but instead of words a growling yip came out. I whined. What's going on I tried to yell.
"Calm down." Jeremy told me softly.
"Alex, your in your animal form." Breea said.
I looked down at my hands only to glossy black fur covered paws. I whined again.
I'm dreaming. I though as I looked at each of them. Breea and Jeremy both shook their heads.
"You're not dreaming. You can shift back if you want. You've slept about six hours as... In that form. You should be rested enough." Breea said.
What happened? Why are you whispering? Why can I hear you in my head? Am I still a vampire? What happens now? Questions tumbled through my head. I looked at each of them but my eyes kept going back to Beth.
Beth? I asked. I hoped she would be able to hear me. But she kept looking at me with a look of wonder on her face. Her fingers moved and caressed each other.
Breea was talking so I turned to look at her.
"You shifted. We're whispering because your senses will be hyper aware. We don't want to hurt your ears. You can hear me in your head because of the Were link. Yes you are still a vampire, only more, and rare. Now you need to shift back to your vampire form so we-,"
I flinched. I did not want to go through that again. Ever. I whined. One word screamed in my head... NO! I backed up. My paws padding over the ripped bedding. I looked down at the destroyed mattress.
I learned down, I sniffed the ripped loose padding, a vicious growl rumbled up my throat. I smelled a dog on the bed.
"Alex?" Beth's voice was tinitive.
The dog forgotten, I looked up at her. I sniffed the air. I smelled no fear. No one was scared of me.
Jeremy even had the audacity to smell of pride.
Ann smelled of amazement.
Stephano smelled of longing but his gaze was not on me. He was looking only at Ann.
"Can I touch you?" Beth whispered.
Before I knew what I was doing I had jumped. I felt my muscles bunch, flex, and spring. The mattress dipped under my weight. Even the scent of the dog kicked up my my paws didn't pull my attention. I landed with a padded thunk.
Ann and Beth gasp. Stephano jerks his eyes from Ann to me. Jeremy said my name in ... warning, caution? I'm not sure. Breea smiles.
Feels natural doesn't it? Breea asked in my head her amusement clear.
I close the distance between us. I press the side of my face to her chest and rub my fur against her.
I notice that where I rubbed my scent clung to her. I liked it. The smell of her Vanilla/Oak and Cotton/Lavender mixed.
I had the urge to grab her shirt and pull her to the floor so we could roll around and mix our scents thoroughly.
