Chapter 16
We were all sitting in the waiting room. Jeremy and I sat facing the hall, Ann and the she-cat, whose name we had learned was Breea, sat with their backs to the hall.
"If I had met you before you were turned I could tell you your species. I only know one person that could now. Unfortunately, she's in Greece."
"How much can this effect me, really? I'm over 470." I lifted my eyebrows, my lack of concern clear.
"Don't take this lightly. Two weres can live in the same body. But no vampire had ever had two in their body. One yes, but not two." Breea stated. "The problem is we don't know what you were. Now that you found your mate your were side will try to come out."
"Mate?" My voice came out a strangled string of syllables.
"Her sister." Breea told. She made it sound like I should have figured it out on my own.
I looked over at Jeremy. He nodded.
"I told you vampires sometimes found a mate."
I suddenly felt the urge to run. I didn't want a mate. I wasn't even sure how vampires mated. Was it like weres? I knew almost even less about that. I shook my head.
"Wait. Spell it out, because I'm having a hard time putting the pieces together. What does this have to do with what I was before being turned?"
"Weres mate for life. Vampires don't. So we don't know what your mate bond will be. But that's not the problem here." Jeremy said.
"The problem is no matter what the mate bond your Were will surface. If you have two weres we don't know which will be dominant. There has never been a vampire with two spices of were." Breea explained. She looked over at Jeremy. "You said she's needed to feed twice in just five days?"
He nodded his head. I shook mine. "Three times. A waiter at the hotel yesterday... Or the day before." I took a deep breath. "I'm having a problem keeping up with the days."
"Um... You need to get out of the hospital, today. Your going to transform, soon." Breea warned me.
"I don't want to leave Beth. She hasn't been released."
"You can't. She'll have to go with you," Breea said and looked over at Ann who had gasped.
"We can't move her."
"You don't have a choice. Alex is going to transform. You don't want it to happen here. But she won't be able to leave Beth. They started the bonding process but didn't complete it." Breea stood up and started pacing. "I wish Brenda were here. She knows more about were/vampires then any one." She mumbled.
It didn't matter to me, my blood felt like it was hot. I could feel sweat on my forehead.
"Brenda Kane?" Jeremy asked with new interest.
Breea nodded.
"If she's not here I don't give a damn who she is." I hissed.
"You need to get them somewhere soon." Breea told Jeremy. "You need to keep your temper under control." She directed at me. "I know it's hard. Feeding will help, even bagged blood. But being with your mate will help control your emotions."
"Well, that's just great. She wants nothing to do with me. And everytime I'm around her my emotions are like a hurricane."
"Jeremy told Beth what you do, about the people that you've killed." Ann said. "You should have been the one to tell her. You shouldn't have ran off like that." She looked at me with disapproval. "What was she supposed to think?"
"She could have had faith in me. She shouldn't have believed the worst with out proof." I said angry, defensive. My heart thumped aggressively aginst my ribs.
"Alexis?" Jeremy said concerned.
"Control your emotions." Breea warned, but her voice was laced with understand.
"Ann, you need to get Beth out of here." Then to me she said, "Turn your basement into a bedroom, but don't use furniture you want to keep."
"I'm staying in a hotel."
"That's not going to work and I don't know when you'll transform." I heard the concern. It ratcheted up my own.
"I can get the paperwork on your houses in. If you do a wire transfer it can be yours in 48 hours."
Breea quickly put it together. "24 hour would be better."
Ann shook her head. "Even with list price it will take 48. Plus they have to sign the contracts."
Breea nodded her head. "OK. The faster you get the paperwork started the better."
Ann stood and said she would have the paperwork there in just a few hours. Then she went to say goodbye to her sister. As she walked away I wanted to follow. But unsure of my reception I remained seated.
"So now what do we do?" I asked. I looked at Jeremy then Breea.
"We wait." Breea said.
That I could do.
"You should be with your mate?" Breea added.
"What did you mean we started the mating process but didn't finish it?"
"You drank her blood?" Breea asked. I nodded. "She didn't drink yours?" She asked. This time I shook my head.
"I don't think I'll ever turn anyone."
"You will her. The process has been started. That's why you can't leave her. When the bond is completed that will lessen. You'll still want to be around each other but it won't be as one-sided or as intence. It'll feel normal. It's biologies way of forcing you together to complete the bond."
One-sided. That about summed it up. She didn't seem as enthralled with me as I was with her. My infatuation would lessen when the bond completed? Then we needed to finish the bonding process so I at least feel normal.
"OK. Let's get it done. I'm tired of feeling like I'm half out of my mind."
"No. We have to wait until after you shift."
"Damn it. This is never ending!" I said in exasperation.
"I'll get you a few bags of blood. I know it's not as good as vein blood but it's all I can do. For now go spend time with your mate." She sat down across from me and layed a hand on my shoulder. "I realize this is hard for you but it's hard for her too. 24 hours ago she didn't believe in any of this. Now she's suddenly thrust into our world. She had a vampire/were mate. She expects to die then finds out all this on top of it. Give her a break? This isn't easy for her and she's fighting it. Both of you are and if you stop fighting it won't feel like you're being ripped apart."
