Chapter 1
I hated clubs. Well... club food anyway. Even at my age of four hundred seventy two I had never gotten used to the taste. They always tasted of alcohol or worse. Granted their inebriation made hunting much easier but that was only if you could handle the taste.
I swayed my hips in a slow rotation. I tilted my head back and slid my hands up my body, over my breast, glided them over the bare flesh of my neck, then my chin, then my face. I opened my fingers and buried them in my hair.
The whole time I moved sensuously to the beat of the music. I kept my lips parted as I swayed, arched, grinded and imitated the séx acts that drew humans to me.
Even with my eyes closed I could feel their eyes on me. I could smell them. Humans would be surprised to learn that each of their emotions had a scent. Their scents called to me. My hunger was manageable. I tried to keep it that way. There were risks in feeding too infrequently. Blood lust- I refused to take an innocent life, so I kept my hunger manageable by feeding before the pain started.
At that moment I could smell cinnamon, magnesium, vanilla, thyme, sulphur, oak, copper, and rosemary. I liked the scent of vanilla and oak, so I moved slowly closer to the scent.
The beat of the song changed, flowing seamlessly into another song by a newer artist.
Eyes closed I moved erasing the space between me and the mouthwatering scent. I could feel the females body heat. I stopped moving closer but continued dancing.
Now, I opened my eyes to see if the scent matched the image in my head. She wore black skinny jeans embroidered with silver thread, a loose fitting red knit top that revealed most of the skin on her shoulders. Her hair was long, shiny, thick, and dark. Even up close no hint of alcohol came from her. She smelled sober, Latin, warm, and bored.
Her back brushed against my arm. I felt a spark like static electricity, painful but somehow still pleasant.
She didn't pause her dance as she glanced over her shoulder to look at me, the person that hunted her, stalked her.
She smiled at me, her dark rose tinted lips parted revealing coffee-stained straight teeth.
I returned the smile and slowly moved my eyes over her body from head to toe. I widened my smile, showing her I was interested. Now, I waited for her reaction. If she wasn't interested I would simply find another mark.
She turned, making the movement appear part of the dance. Her hand reached for me and found my hand. She gave me a slight pull and I moved closer.
"I'm Beth." She called over the beat of the music.
"Alex." I said. I intentionally kept my voice low so she had to lean closer.
"What?" She said loudly.
I repeated my name keeping my voice low.
This time she did lean forward. I pretended to think she just wanted closer. I bent my knees and slid my body up hers as I stood.
She took the opportunity to wind her arms around me.
"I'm Alex." I said.
We danced for the next thirty minutes. We both touched each other, pretending it was all about the dance. Her natural scent of oak and vanilla remained.
Her scent changed slowly acquiring the smell of arousal, cinnamon.
Heart pounding, she pulled me from the dance floor. She headed to a booth that another couple already sat in side by side.
She pulled me to her side and I let her.
"This is Alex." She said introducing me. Then she pointed to the Caucasian male. "That's Kevin."
She slid into the seat by the Latina female. She gave her a quick hug. Turning to me she said, "This is Ann, my sister."
A waitress arrived and asked if we would like anything to drink. With a secretive smile I ordered a ginger ale.
The myths humans tell were mostly created by us. We made up the myths to make it harder for the humans to recognize us.
We could eat human food, most of us could be in the sun. Garlic and crosses had no effect on us. We didn't have to be invited into your home to enter it. We even had heartbeats. We're not cold-blooded but our temperature stayed lower than humans by a few degrees.
It was another waitress, a vampire, who delivered our drinks.
Hello, Alex. It's been a long time. Becky said over a one on one telepathic link. I had met her over 20 years before on a different continent.
"Thanks." I said a loud as she passed me my drink. Silently I said, I just got in the country.
I get off at two, want to meet up? She asked over the link as she passed the other drinks to the humans.
I looked over at Beth. I may be tied up. I told Becky.
Tomorrow? She asked hopefully.
Two AM. I agreed. If I can make it.
An hour later, Ann and Kevin stood to leave. I was happy to see them go. I had already learned that Beth lived just eight miles from the club. It was five miles closer than my hotel.
I watched as the sisters hugged.
I heard Ann whisper in Beth's ear. "Call me."
"Of course, Monday." Beth whispered back.
Beth hugged Kevin and said that she would see them later. He nodded. He took Ann's hand and they started to move over the dance floor towards the door.
As soon as her sister and Kevin wove their way through the crowd, she turned to me and gave me a smile.
The smile made my heart rate jump. I attributed it to hunger. I should have realized that there was more to it. I didn't.
Her teeth were a bit stained from coffee or tea but her lips were full and her eyes drew me in.
"How long will you be in town?" She asked as if my answer were vitally important.
"Two more weeks." I told her honestly. I saw no reason to lie.
For a second sadness blanketed her face but she banished it quickly.
We finished our drinks and Beth shyly asked me to come home with her.
I agreed trying to keep my enthusiasm hidden. I didn't need my fangs extending but they tried.
