Chapter 4: Drive-In
The next night came by in a breeze and before I knew it, I was sneaking out of my bedroom window, ready to head over to Judy's place.
After a short walk, I came to a stop in front of her house.
I took in a few small breathes before walking up to the door and knocking.
After a minute, the door opened, Judy greeting me with a smile. "Hey, you look great."
I smoothed out the front of my favorite dress. "Thanks, so do you."
"Thanks, but I'm not ready just yet, why don't you c'mon in." She said, holding the door for me.
I walked into the house, immediately taking in all the racing trophies and pictures of cars lining the walls.
"Make yourself at home, I'll be right back."
I nodded and walked into the living room, inspecting the pictures on the walls.
As I looked them over, I noticed a familiar face. It was Judy when she was young and a man standing in front of an old car, the man held a trophy in his hands and had a smile on his face.
"That was my dads first big win." I heard, slightly startling me.
I turned to see Judy walking over. "How old were you there?"
She came to a stop next to me, running her finger over the picture. "About nine or ten... I idolized him for as long as I could remember, but that was definitely the defining moment."
I lowered my head. "I'm sorry for your loss."
She just nodded, looking down as well.
We stayed like that for a minute before Judy looked back up. "Anyway, enough of that, we have a movie to see."
She had a smile on her face, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. I could tell she missed him a lot.
But, I decided not to dig up any old memories, this was supposed to be my way of making her feel better for her loss last night. So, I was determined to make this a fun night.
I smiled back. "Alright, lead the way."
I followed her outside to her barn. She opened the doors and grabbed her car keys from a nail next to the door.
"Hop in." She said, getting into the drivers seat of her purple race car.
"We're taking this?" I asked.
"Yeah, c'mon, it'll be fun." She said, a refreshed smile on her face, this one seeming more genuine.
I returned it. "Alright."
I got in the passenger seat and buckled the seat belt.
Judy turned to me. "Ready?"
I looked at her. "Ready as I'll ever be."
"That's what I like to hear." She said as she turned the key.
The car rumbled to life and she put it in gear before taking off down her driveway.
I clung to my seat belt as she turned onto the street and floored it.
But, my fear soon turned to excitement as the adrenaline started pumping through my veins.
A wide grin spread on my face. This was a feeling I'd never experienced before and I was convinced I'd never feel anything like it again.
After a short drive, thanks to all the speeding, we pulled behind a line of cars making their way into the drive-in.
"So, what's this movie called again?" I asked.
"White lightening."
"What's it about?"
She glanced at me. "I'm not really sure, but Burt Reynolds is in it, so it has to be good."
I just laughed as we pulled up to get our tickets then drove off to find a parking spot.
We hooked the speakers on the windows and sat back in our seats as the opening credits began to roll.
"You want anything? My treat." Judy said.
"Sure, a soda would be great."
She nodded before heading out to the concession stand.
I glanced back at the big screen, patiently awaiting Judy's return...
As the movie wore on, we came to a scene in the middle where Burt Reynolds was making out with the love interest in a lake.
Judy chuckled. "That takes me back."
I glanced at her, a humorous smile spreading on my lips. "You made out with a guy in a dirty swamp?"
She met my gaze, her smile growing a little. "Well, no... I made out with a girl in a dirty swamp."
My face immediately flushed. "Oh..."
She giggled. "Didn't expect that one, huh?"
I averted her gaze. "No, I can't say I did."
It grew quiet as I was to nervous to speak. Sure I liked her from the moment I saw her, but I didn't expect her to like girls, or even me for that matter. But, my dreams were slowly becoming reality and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a little scary.
"You ever kiss a girl before?" She asked, breaking through the silence.
I had to think back to my first and only kiss. It was with my best friend when we were kids. While it was short, it changed my life forever.
"Yeah..." I replied, memories of that day slowly seeping back into my mind.
"Really?" Judy asked, seemingly shocked.
I nodded. "It was with my best friend when we were in grade school."
"What happened?"
"The teacher caught us and told our parents... Her parents pulled her out of the school the next day and I wasn't allowed to see her anymore."
Judy lowered her head. "That's awful."
I shrugged. "That wasn't even the worst part. Ever since then, my father try's to force all these boys on me, as if to 'cleanse' me or something..."
Judy shook her head. "What about your mother?"
"She supported me and loved me no matter what, at least that's what she would tell me..."
"What happened to her..?"
I felt a few tears well up as more memories pushed their way in. "Cancer..."
Judy took my hand in hers, gently squeezing it. "I'm sorry..."
I squeezed her hand back, finally looking up to meet her gaze. "Don't be... it's nice to finally have someone to talk to again... someone who understands where I'm coming from."
A small smile pulled at the corner of her lips. "If you ever need someone to talk to, I'm your gal."
A smile spread on my lips as well. "Thank you."
Then, we grew quiet, enjoying each other's company.
Our hands still firmly locked together...
