Chapter 2: Qualifiers
"Come take a look at this." Rex said, pointing at the engine.
The smell of gasoline filled my nose as I followed Judy to the front of the car.
"Where's it leaking from?" Judy asked, resting her hands on the fender.
"The carburetor, it looks minor, but they won't let us race it tomorrow with a leak." Rex replied.
She glanced at him. "Can you fix it?"
He flashed her a sly smirk. "'Course I can fix it."
She smiled back, patting his shoulder. "I knew I kept you around for a reason."
As he got to work on the car, I followed Judy out of the barn.
"You're racing tomorrow?" I found myself asking.
She nodded. "As long as Rex can get that leak fixed... you should come by, it'd be nice to have another friendly face cheering me on."
I smiled. "Alright."
She nodded. "Great, why don't you stop by tomorrow morning and you can ride with us."
"Sure thing, I should be heading home now though. Don't wanna be late for dinner."
She smiled at me. "Alright, we'll see you tomorrow then."
"See you then." I replied, giving her a small wave, before turning on my heel and heading home...
"You're late." My father said as I walked through the door.
"Sorry, dad." I replied, sitting down next to him at the table.
"Where'd you get off to?" Trisha asked.
I shrugged as I speared a green bean with my fork. "Just exploring, nothing special."
She nodded before going back to her dinner, silence eventually falling over the table.
After dinner, I headed up to my room for the night, excited for what tomorrow would hold...
The next morning, I woke up early in an attempt to sneak out.
But, as I was approaching the front door, I heard creaking from behind me. "Where are you off to so early, sweetie?" Trisha asked, rubbing her eyes.
"Just going for a walk, I'll be back in a little bit."
Luckily, she nodded. "Alright, be safe."
I nodded back before hurriedly making my way outside and down the street towards Judy's place.
As I approached, I saw Rex pulling a trailer down the driveway with his truck, Judy's car sat on the trailer.
"And here I thought you weren't gonna make it." He said.
I smiled as I walked up to the truck. "Good morning."
He tipped his old, trucker hat. "Mornin'."
"There she is." Judy said as she marched out the front door, wearing a dark purple, leather jacket and grease stained jeans.
I waved at her as she walked up to the trailer, inspecting the straps holding her car down.
To my surprise, there was a name sewn into the back of the jacket.
"'Rockin' Judy Moore?" I questioned.
Judy turned to me with a smile. "That's my name and racin's my game."
I smiled.
"Soon, everyone in the U.S. of A will know that name." Rex said.
Judy chuckled. "Hopefully."
She patted the roof of the truck. "Alright, let's get a move on."
Judy and I piled onto the bench seat of Rex's truck, Judy sitting in the middle, her leg lightly resting on mine.
"You excited?" She asked as Rex pulled out of the driveway.
I shrugged. "I don't know, I've never been to a drag race before."
Rex laughed. "Looks like we got a virgin on our hands, Judy."
She nudged him. "C'mon, Rex, be respectful."
I just laughed.
After a short ride, we pulled into a grassy parking lot filled with at least a hundred race ready cars, the sounds of engines in the distance filled my ears.
We stepped out and helped Judy unload her car.
"I'll meet you guys in the pits." She said as she started it and drove off in the opposite direction.
"Follow me." Rex said, leading me towards what I assumed to be the "pits."
We walked past a row of tents, each filled with a car and a team of guys.
"Not many girls here, huh?" I asked.
Rex shrugged. "Usually it's only Judy, but now you make two."
We eventually stopped in front of an empty tent, Judy joining us shortly after.
"Well?" Rex asked as she stepped out of the car.
"We're in, she passed the inspection." She replied, a huge grin on her face.
Rex nodded. "Great, then let's get her ready to race."
As the morning carried on, we were eventually called up for the qualifiers.
As we followed Judy's car to the starting line, a terrible smell filled my nose.
I pinched it. "What's that smell?"
Rex took in a deep inhale. "That's the smell of burning rubber and racing fuel, darlin', the best smell on the planet."
I shook my head. "To each their own I guess."
We watched Judy pull into her spot, then she slammed on the gas, spinning the rear tires which formed a huge cloud of smoke around the back of her car.
I covered my ears and turned to Rex, who was cheering. "What's she doing?"
"One hell of a burnout, it heats the tires up, makes for better traction."
I just nodded, turning back to watch Judy finish her "burnout" and pull up to the light.
Five amber lights lit up simultaneously before going out, causing the green one to light up a fraction of a second later.
Judy slammed on the gas again, this time taking off down the track like a rocket.
She raced all the way down to a large sign that flashed with numbers as she passed it.
"Woohoo!" Rex cheered. "That's her fastest time yet. C'mon, we gotta go see her." He said, leading me back to the pits
I smiled at his excitement as I followed him.
We got back to the tent just as Judy was hopping out of her car.
She ran up and pulled Rex into a hug. "Woo! That was one hell of a run!" She cheered.
"Damn straight." Rex replied, giddily patting her shoulder.
After their excitement died down, I turned to Judy. "So, now what?"
"Now, we wait for the races to start." She replied...
