Information Runner.
Sage woke up to a loud yell from somewhere in the base. He grabbed his ears before getting up and going to see the problem. He saw Cedar trying to get a female in a ranger uniform to calm down.
"The only reason my form isn't in is because I have yet to get a blank one! I told them I needed one, but they just said I should've gotten one when I graduated! I'm sorry, but instead of yelling, can you just give me a spare?" The female huffed.
"I'll get it in a minute. I came for the captain." Sage peeked around the corner and paused at the clear sight of the female.
Her scarlet red eyes almost burned as she tried to get around Cedar. Her teal hair was pulled back into a delicate and unique ponytail that weakly swayed behind her. Her uniform looked like a Ringtown uniform with just a large bag on her back. She pulled the bag off her back and straightened up, looming over the young ranger. Uh oh.
"Let me remind you that I have things to do with the captain. I will deal with your request later." Cedar pouted.
"But what if I had more important things to do with the captain?" She narrowed her eyes as Sage bit his lip to contain the laughter that almost followed. It reminded him of him and Joel's normal arguments. He slipped out his styler and texted his fellow base leader.
Sage: "I'm witnessing a reenactment of our arguments."
Joel: "Quit lying."
Sage: "I would if it wasn't Cedar and another ranger fighting about who's going to be talking to me first."
He could almost hear the laughter from Joel in the next message.
Joel: "Darn it! I want to witness it, but they'll be separated by the time I get there!"
Sage: "Here, lemme call you so that you can hear part of it. I don't want you to miss the whole thing."
He quickly called his dear friend as they went another round.
Female: "Listen up, Cedar. You might be an actual ranger here, but my needs are far more important than that of yours any day."
Cedar: "But... I am always at the captain's side. So surely he would put me in front of someone who came from another sector to do something."
Female: "At least I'm not being a big bother-"
Cedar: "Bother?"
Female: "-that is almost always pestering-"
Cedar: "Pestering?"
Female: "-my captain every ten minutes."
Cedar:"Woah woah woah! Hold on, dear ranger ally. I am not a pest or a bother to the captain! You're the one that is constantly annoying-"
Female: "Annoying?"
Cedar: "-the hell outta everyone in spite of their peace-"
Female: "Peace?"
Cedar: "-and quiet-"
Female: "Quiet?"
Cedar: "-that they have been in for their entire life until you barged in-"
Female: "Barged?"
Cedar: "-and destroyed-"
Female: "Destroyed?"
Cedar: "-their poor innocent lives."
Female: "Innocent? Look who's lying now!"
Cedar: "At least I'm having fun with it."
Female: "Fun? Is this fun to you? Making people suffer?"
Cedar: "Is it fun for you to bother people about information?"
Female: "Well... no..."
Cedar: "Then why are you complaining about such topics?"
Female: "At least I'm telling the truth."
Cedar: "Not as much as me. Or would you rather I warn the world?"
Female: "You try anything and you don't get a clear file."
Cedar: "Are you blackmailing me?"
Female: "Look at it as you please."
Silence followed as Cedar tried to make a comeback. It wasn't until Sage said something did sound reappear.
"Ok love birds. No need for a divorce this early in the relationship."
Joel's laughter slipped out of the styler and split through the shock as the two base leaders lost it at the reaction. Cedar's face was a warm red while the female hissed.
"Were you eavesdropping on us?"
"No... I was just admiring how much you two's argument reminded me of my past ones with Joel. And I couldn't help but let him listen in on it." Joel pulled himself together as he sighed.
"I needed that. I thought no one could pull that off."
"And yet everyone is still trying. I'll talk to you once you have started breathing again."
"Ladies first, Sage." Sage cocked a smile before hanging up. He then stood up and went over.
"Alright... So before you two start another argument, we'll let the lady get her needs and leave and then we'll talk in private. Does that sound good, Cedar?" The smaller boy nodded.
"Alright." Sage smiled before turning to the female ranger.
"What do you need, ma'am?" She huffed.
"First off, it's Scarlet. Name's are important sometimes. Secondly, I was told to grab a file about something that happened a couple years ago." Sage hummed.
"Do you have the file number?" She reached into her bag and pulled out a paper.
"File... 691347." Sage's blood ran cold at the number. Sure, he kept his composure, but his heart felt heavy and everything didn't sit well. He took a shallow breath before slowly turning on his heel.
"One moment."
He went to the back room and took a shaky breath, letting the room hear his stress. Why the hell did she want that one? The one that deemed destruction to most of the original group? Did he have to lie about it? He didn't know if he could pull that off. He knew exactly where it was. But it wasn't like he wanted to even touch it. He went to the area and looked at it. It was in a locked box marked "KEEP OUT", letting those who touch it know that it was dangerous. He couldn't move closer to it as the flashbacks hit him. He sat down against a wall that was near it and huffed lightly. It hurt to think about it. Everything that happened. No, he had to lie and warn the others.
He went back out and pulled his best act ever. He went over with a sigh.
"I'm not sure where the previous leader put it, but when I find it, I'll reach out. What base are you coming from? Or are you from the Ranger Union?" She paused. Did she see through it?
"Aqina. Number 1109. I'll be waiting." She reached into the bag and handed something to Cedar. "I better have that by the end of the week." Cedar nodded.
"Copy that, Scarlet. Hell, you'll have it before Saturday is thought of." She scoffed.
"This I want to see." She grabbed her bag and waved as she left. The moment the door closed, a pen appeared in Cedar's hand as he sat down. Sage paused.
"Are you kidding me?" Cedar paused at that.
"Should I call out to her and change Saturday to Wednesday?" Sage frowned.
"If you get that done before tomorrow, I'm buying ice cream for you." Cedar gulped.
"Uh... not ice cream. I can't take the extreme cold it gives off. But I'll take it." Sage hummed.
"I can get something else."
"N-no.. I'm good..." Sage sat down beside him.
"What did you mean by that you were having fun lying?" Cedar winced, grabbing Sage's attention.
"Y-you heard that?"
"I heard from when you were asking for a new form all the way to when I let myself get caught listening." Cedar gulped nervously.
"Then that's a yes... um..." He paused as he scanned over the form. "I kinda don't want to answer that right now. It's a sensitive question and I'm not ready."
"Take your time. You tell me when you're ready. But I want my answer." Cedar nodded as he paused.
"What was with the nervousness when Scarlet was here? I could feel it emitting from you." Sage gulped.
"I'll answer that later. I have to reach out with some people first." Cedar nodded as Sage stretched. "What did you need me for?" Cedar held up a letter.
"Lapis replied back." Sage's eyes flashed as he took the note from him.
"Dear Sage.
Thank you for sending the things. It took a while of keeping them away from my father, but they got here safe and sound.
I can't wait to start so that I can work with you. It was a dream as a whole group to go and be with the rangers, but not all of us got the same fate. I hope that when we meet you'll understand what I mean.
But seriously? I remember you barged in to help me get away from Elita... she'll probably be a little mad if it's mentioned so be careful when you ask her.
Hope to see you soon.
~Lapis"
"A little mad?" Sage muttered as he eyed the line. "I think that'll be an understatement..." He got up and sighed. "I'll be back. I have to assemble a meeting about that file she asked for." Cedar nodded.
"Do you want me to come or..." Sage shook his head.
"No... I want you to be here to relay the message to the others. I'll just be in Fall City. See you... when I get back." Cedar nodded as Sage went out.
