Chapter 5 Pyromaniac
At first, we all thought the police wouldn't discover Pyro existed. That was before Barry and I arrived late to work.
"Where have you two been?" Joe asked when we walked in. "I called you both several times."
I pulled out my phone, sure enough there were two missed calls. "Oh. We had a late night. Sorry about that."
"Barry's always late, don't worry about it. Come with me. We found something strange."
Barry and I exchanged looks and followed Joe outside. We got in his car and Joe started driving. None of us said a word. Even the chatterbox person I was decided to be quiet.
Joe stopped in front of an old warehouse and got out. Barry and I followed him inside. I stopped in the doorway. The entire inside of the warehouse was black and ash covered the floor.
"Whoa," Barry breathed. "It must have been an explosion of some kind."
I shot him a sharp look and he nodded, letting me know that he knew what it had actually been.
Joe shook his head. "There was nothing around that could have caused an explosion. Nothing that could have started a fire. We searched the area very thoroughly and- Skye, are you alright?"
I knelt down, brushing away some of the ash to reveal a gold ring. I picked it up and looked at Joe. "I'm fine," I smiled. "Just thought I found something. It wasn't anything important." I slipped the ring into my pocket.
Joe's eyes flicked to my pocket, but he didn't say anything. "Alright. As I was saying, there wasn't any wood or machinery that could have malfunctioned."
My phone started ringing. I pulled it out and looked at the screen. Gizmo. "Excuse me," I said to Joe. I hit the green button and walked out of earshot. "Hey Cisco. What is it now?"
"Where are you?" Cisco asked. "We need our Split Second Speedsters as soon as possible."
I glanced over at Barry, who was looking at the floor intently. "Why? What's the problem?"
"I don't know! Caitlin won't tell me anything!" Cisco sounded exasperated.
"Caitlin knows something that the rest of us don't?"
"It seems that way."
"We'll come as soon as we can." I ended the call and walked over to Barry. "Find anything of note?"
Barry shook his head. "Any evidence would have burned up in all the fire. What did Cisco want?"
I checked that Joe was out of earshot, but lowered my voice anyway. "He needs us. He thinks Caitlin knows something that she isn't telling anyone else."
Barry glanced at me and brushed away some more ashes. "I wonder if we'll be able to do it during our lunch break."
I stared at him. "I am not skipping my nutritious lunch of donuts and cake."
Barry smiled. "We can get lunch and take it to S.T.A.R."
"Fine."
"Did you find anything?" Joe asked.
I looked up at him. "No. Anything we could have found would have gotten burned in the fire."
Joe sighed. "I was hoping you'd be able to find something that might lead to whoever, or whatever, did this." He looked at me pointedly.
I hoped he wouldn't ask me to show him what I'd found. Thankfully, he stood up. "Maybe we'll come back later," he said. "We can get back to the station. I'm sure you two can find something to do."
Barry nodded and helped me up. "Do you mind if we walk?"
Joe shook his head. "As far as I know there isn't anything important you need to do. You can walk, just don't take too long." He patted Barry's shoulder and smiled. "Don't get lost."
"I won't get lost, it's Skye you should worry about," Barry grinned at me.
I shrugged. "I can't deny that."
Joe laughed and waved. "I'll see you two back at the station."
As soon as we'd watched his car drive away Barry and I ran toward S.T.A.R. Labs. I didn't stop inside the door like Barry did. Instead I raided Cisco's licorice stash and sat down in an office chair.
"It took you two long enough," Cisco teased, then he looked at me. "Hey! That's my licorice!"
I quickly ate the whole bag, crumpled it up and threw it in the garbage. "What licorice?"
Cisco gave me a reproachful look. "You know what licorice."
"I don't see any of it," I said, feigning innocence.
Cisco sighed. "Would you mind talking to Caitlin?"
"Sure," Barry said. "About what?"
Cisco gave me another reproachful look. "Didn't you tell him anything?"
"Only what you told me," I said. "That you thought she knew something."
"I'll go talk to her," Barry said. "Skye could you get us some donuts? Don't steal them."
I gave him a look of mock horror. "Me? Steal donuts? No!"
He rolled his eyes. "Just don't do it."
"Fine. See you later Captain Flash."
Barry glared at me. "See you later Sarcastic Spark."
I gasped. "I love that!"
Barry groaned and Cisco laughed. I waved and ran toward Jitters. I did my usual routine, stopping a block away and walking normal speed the rest of the way. I opened the door and marched straight up to the counter. "Gimme four giant donuts please!" I said when Iris stood behind the cash register.
Iris raised an eyebrow. "Four? You aren't going to eat them all yourself are you?"
"Nope, I'm going to give one to Barry," I smiled and handed her the money needed. "And maybe Gizmo will get one." As soon as that sentence left my mouth I regretted it.
Iris's eyes lit up. "Gizmo? The little boy who came into the station yesterday said Spark mentioned someone named Gizmo, and I saw her last night. There was also someone she called Flash."
"Spark?" I asked, pretending to not know what she was talking about. "I can't say I've heard of her or Flash. Gizmo is just a nickname for one of my friends. He's always trying to create some technology."
"Spark and Flash can move really fast," Iris smiled. "I've started a blog about them. And what if your friend is Gizmo?"
"Cisco?" I snorted. "I don't think he would help Spark and Flash without telling me about it. He's really terrible with secrets."
Iris laughed and handed me the donuts. "Tell Barry that there's a quiz night tonight. I think he'd have fun with it. You should come too."
I took the donuts and smiled at her. "I think I will. See you around Iris!"
"See you Skye!" Iris waved as I left.
I walked a block away, as usual, before starting to run. I ran through S.T.A.R. Labs, dropping a donut into Barry's, Cisco's, and Caitlin's hands.
Cisco looked down at his donut in surprise. "I wonder who's back," he said sarcastically. "Thanks for the donut Sparky."
I lounged in my chair. "You're welcome."
Barry cleared his throat. "Not to put a damper on your day Skye, but we were supposed to be at the station a while ago."
I shot bolt upright. "Oh shoot." I ate my donut and shot to the door. "Enjoy your donut Gizmo!"
Barry laughed and shot after me as I ran out the door.
