Chapter 26 Speedster Once More

"Barry please back out," I said, standing in the doorway of the room with the treadmill. "I don't want you to get electrocuted."

Barry shook his head and got onto the treadmill. "I did that when I was struck by lightning. If I fail..." he didn't finish.

I glared at him. "If you die I will run fast enough to travel to different worlds and I will haul you back."

Barry gave me a wry smile. "Well then let's hope it doesn't come to that."

"I know you're here!" Blackout called. I saw him reflected in one of the computers.

"Caitlin, pull the lever, we need to get out," I said, eyes fixed on the monitor.

Nothing happened for a long five seconds. Then a bright light started up behind me. I forced myself to stay focused on keeping the coast clear.

I couldn't stay focused when Barry shouted and the light died. I whipped around and saw him crash against the wall. I caught him before he hit the ground.

"Don't move," I ordered. "Either of you."

Before either one could make a response, I readjusted Barry so his right arm was around my shoulders. I grabbed Caitlin's hand and shot out of the central room.

I stopped in my tracks when I saw Tony, the meta-human one, crash down in front of me. He looked up at the three of us and smiled.

"You know me," he gasped. "I could never run from a fight."

He grunted got up, charging down the hallway again. Blackout must have been that direction. I decided to continue on my own course.

I knew the hallways well enough to know exactly where Dr. Wells and Cisco were. I shoved the door open and stopped running.

Caitlin gasped and Barry winced. "That feels so much weirder as a normal person," he said, rubbing his shoulders. "I'm not healing fast anymore either. That's unfortunate."

"It didn't work I take it?" Cisco asked.

I shook my head. "No it didn't."

Cisco frowned for a second, then brightened up. "You've just got the yips!"

Barry raised an eyebrow. "The what?"

"The yips. You know, where you think you can't do something, so when you try to do it you can't because you don't think you can do it. So theoretically all you need to do is think you can do it and then when you do it you can!" Cisco grinned.

Barry shook his head. "That didn't make any sense, sorry Gizmo."

"I think you should all get out of there," Tony, the not meta-human one, said in my ear. "That is my professional opinion."

"Ha!" I said, making Caitlin jump. "As if you would know anything about fighting people who can control lightning... never mind. Don't respond to that."

Barry ignored what I said. "We have another problem too," he said. "Tony got out. If there's a breach in the pipeline-"

"There isn't," Dr. Wells said. "I let him out. We needed a diversion so we could get out."

Barry glared. "You let him out? He's probably dead and you don't even care! This is all just a game to you! Which of us is next? Huh? Which of us are you going to send out to get killed?"

Dr. Wells gave Barry a pitying look. "Barry, you are understandably upset-"

"You bet I am! Come on guys. Let's go." Barry stormed out of the room.

I cast a sidelong look at Dr. Wells. "You didn't let Rager out did you?" I asked.

Dr. Wells shook his head. "No. I didn't. You three go with him. I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if he was killed. I'll come as soon as I can."

I nodded and opened the door. "After you." I gestured to Cisco and Caitlin.

They both hurried out the door. I cast one glance back at Dr. Wells before I followed them. The closet we'd been in wasn't far from the garage, and we got there without any trouble.

Barry was waiting for us in front of the smaller S.T.A.R. Labs van. He looked more calm than before.

We had just made a little group when the lights above us exploded. Barry, Caitlin, and Cisco were so surprised they all fell down. I stayed on my feet, maybe I wasn't surprised because I had more time to process things.

Blackout was now standing between us and the door back inside. He smiled evilly at us. "Where's Wells?" he demanded.

"Leave them alone," Dr. Wells said from right behind Blackout.

Stay out of it, my mind reminded me. See if Cisco was right. Don't interfere until Barry gets going.

Blackout turned around, grabbed Dr. Wells from his wheelchair, and threw him on the ground.

It took all of my willpower to not run forward as Blackout raised his hands. His hands started to glow and pale blue lightning spiraled toward Dr. Wells. I looked back at Barry. His eyes filled with gold lightning and I breathed a sigh of relief.

Barry leaped to his feet and shot to Dr. Wells. I watched as he set Dr. Wells down between Cisco and Caitlin and disappeared inside. I knew what he was getting.

I stayed focused on keeping myself moving fast and walked to a place a step away from where Blackout's lightning would land. Barry ran to my side a moment later.

I let my focus slide and the lightning hit the ground, making a small burned patch on the concrete.

"Come on man," I said. "I just swept that earlier today."

Blackout looked at Barry and I with a determined look I didn't like.

Barry leaned over. "Hold still," he whispered in my ear. "And don't lose your speed."

Before I could ask what he meant, Blackout held out his hands toward us. Gold lightning swirled from Barry's chest and green lightning from me. It felt like he was trying to rip me apart.

I fell to my knees and squeezed my eyes shut. There's no explaining the pain it caused to have the lightning sucked out of me. It seemed like an eternity before it stopped. I panted and let myself tip over. I spread myself out on the floor, staring up at the ceiling.

Caitlin was the first one next to me, but only because Barry was still recovering as well. "Are you alright?" she asked frantically.

I winced. "Ouch. That was painful," I groaned.

Barry laughed weakly. "Yeah. It wasn't as bad the first time, but that's probably because you weren't getting it too."

I held up my hand and moved it back and forth rapidly. Green lightning flickered around my fingers. "And I'm still a speedster. Does anyone care if I just sleep right here tonight?"

"I mind," Barry said. "We have to check on Iris."

I shot bolt upright, almost smacking Caitlin in the face. "How did I forget that?!"

"They're at the hospital," Tony said in my ear. He yawned loudly. "Are you always up so late?"

I shoved myself to my feet. "If you can keep your thoughts to yourself right now that would be great. Otherwise I might come and punch you."

Tony made no response as Barry and I ran toward the hospital. We ran up the wall and went through a window on the sixth floor. Iris stood in the hallway in front of the coffee machine. She jumped when she saw us.

"Iris, are you alright?" Barry asked.

Iris nodded and glared at us. "Where were you two? Eddie got shot and neither of you showed up! Only a guy with a metal arm. I need to talk to Skye and tell her Bucky isn't who she thinks he is."

"Is Eddie doing okay? Where is Bucky?" I asked. I wondered if he knew Iris had recognized him.

Iris didn't stop glaring. "Eddie's fine, though I don't know why you'd care. I don't know where Bucky went, he said you sent him though."

I glanced at Barry, wondering if we could have a really fast conversation. Time to test. "I need to tell her I'm The Spark," I said. "We need to say we aren't siblings now so that she doesn't figure out you're The Flash."

Barry gave me a worried look. "Is that a good idea?"

"No, but I'm going to have to do it."

"Fine. Tell her we- the speedsters aren't related when you tell her. I'm going to check on Eddie." He shot away.

Iris gave no indication she had heard our conversation. I took a deep breath and stopped vibrating my voice. "Iris... I... have to tell you something..."
