Chapter 2 Say What?
"You could have told us the world slowed down!" Barry shouted, stomping into the Cortex with me at his heels.
Dr. Wells sighed, looking down at his desk. "We were going to tell you before you left, but I didn't want to stop you from seeing Iris."
"Tell us what?" I asked. "If you were going to tell us earlier you don't need to work up the suspense anymore."
"The world hasn't gotten any slower," Cisco said, eyes gleaming with excitement. "You two have gotten faster!"
"How much faster?" Barry asked, looking from Cisco to Dr. Wells.
Dr. Wells looked up. "We don't know. You haven't done anything for us to test."
I felt excitement rise up inside me. "Would it be possible to create a sonic boom?"
Cisco grinned. "That would be awesome!"
Caitlin shook her head. "We'll need to do some tests first."
I sighed. "Drat," I muttered.
Barry shot me an amused look. He walked over to Dr. Wells and started talking about doing the tests, Cisco started getting as much of his technology together as he could, and Caitlin left to find something.
I told Dr. Wells that I would come back at five to do the tests and headed for the door. I couldn't wait until five to test my speed. I was too excited. Cisco convinced me to go to the runway S.T.A.R. Labs always used for experiments for some early tests, because he, like me, couldn't wait.
He packed all of his tech into the S.T.A.R. Labs van. Two of those pieces of tech were prototype friction-proof suits. One was red, the other was blue. Cisco explained that he had built them a year ago as an experiment, but didn't have anyone to test them. Now he did. He said there were sensors to track my vitals.
Not for the first time, I was glad I understood what I fondly called 'tech-speak'. That seemed to be Cisco's default.
When we reached the runway, Cisco set up his equipment as I put on the blue friction-proof suit. I discovered a hood. I reached over my shoulder and pulled it over my head. It fit snugly with a mask that surrounded my eyes. It kind of reminded me of a raccoon, a thought that made me smile.
I jumped out of the back of the van and walked over to Cisco. "You ready yet?" I asked, peeking over his shoulder at all of the tech. None of it made any sense to me.
"Almost," Cisco said, pressing a couple of buttons. "You know what's kind of funny? It's almost five o'clock."
I stared at him. "You're kidding. Really? What time was it when I agreed to meet at five?"
"I think about four thirty. I don't know for sure. I was a little preoccupied."
I smiled. "When are you not?"
Cisco looked at me and stopped. "Whoa."
"Whoa what?" I looked down at myself. "I look like a blueberry?"
Cisco shook his head. "No. That... that fits you really well." He looked thoughtful. "It's a little boring though..."
"Thanks," I slapped his shoulder. "You focus on getting the tech set up. I want to run."
Cisco nodded, gave me one last look, and turned back to his computers.
I looked up the runway and took off. There was a sparking sound that distracted me. I stopped looking at myself. I was almost certain I had made the noise. I looked back toward Cisco who was looking from me to his computers. "Don't stop!" he shouted.
"Easy for you to say," I grumbled. I noticed the other S.T.A.R. Labs van pulling up next to the one Cisco and I had taken. That must be what I had heard.
I started running again. The sparking sound started up again and I stopped again. I had reached the end of the runway, but I could just barely see everyone watching me. If only I could figure out what that sparking sound was.
I ran back toward them and tried to stop next to everyone. I didn't start stopping soon enough. I crashed full force into one of the vans.
There was a flash of yellow light and Barry knelt next to me. "Are you okay?"
I blinked the spots out of my vision. "Surprisingly, yes," I said, looking up at the van. There was a large dent in the metal. "You would think I wouldn't be."
Barry started to help me up. I yelped as my right arm bumped the ground sending a bolt of pain through my shoulder. "Never mind," I gasped. "I think I did something to my arm."
Caitlin and Cisco ran over. Caitlin took one look at my arm and said it was broken. She set up a makeshift sling for me to use.
Barry hovered around me nervously until Dr. Wells told him to put on the other friction-proof suit.
Caitlin finished with my arm and helped me up. "You shouldn't have crashed into the van," she said.
I frowned at her. "You think I did that on purpose? I thought I could stop faster than I did."
Caitlin frowned back and walked over to look at the computer screens. I walked a little way in front of the table.
"You should have seen yourself," Barry said, making me jump. "That was among the coolest things I've ever seen."
I didn't look at him. "Why? Do you know what the sparking sound I heard was?"
Barry grinned. "Lightning."
That got my attention. I looked at him incredulously. "Lightning?"
"Green lightning. Cisco said he had a couple other friction-proof suits. You'll have to ask if he's got a dark green one. The blue kind of clashed with it."
I looked him up and down. The red suit fit him much the same way mine fit me. He hadn't pulled the hood up over his face yet. "I'll do that. Your turn. You won't believe how much fun that was."
Barry gave me a quick hug and smiled. "I'll try not to crash into the van."
I gave him the thumbs up. "Good plan. It hurt."
Barry shot off, yellow lightning crackling around him. I smiled and, without thinking, stretched both my arms out to the side. My right arm felt a little stiff. It wasn't until Caitlin shouted something at me that I remembered I'd broken it.
Cisco stayed at the computers. Looking at the screens and occasionally writing down a note. Caitlin and Dr. Wells came over.
"What are you thinking?!" Caitlin burst out as soon as I was within earshot. "You can't move a broken arm!"
"It doesn't hurt at all!" I objected. I waved it around and did several stretches to prove my point. "It's a little stiff, but it certainly isn't broken."
"That's impossible!" Caitlin exclaimed, looking at my arm closely.
"I wouldn't be so sure," Dr. Wells said calmly. "It is entirely possible that because your body can move faster it can also heal faster."
I looked down at my arm. "That's handy."
"However," Dr. Wells looked at me seriously. "It would probably be a good idea to keep your speed hidden as much as possible. If anyone sees you break something, you need to make sure you act like it is really broken until it would normally be healed."
"So if I break my arm and a friend sees and it heals in fifteen minutes, I still need to act like its broken?" I was a little annoyed about that, but it was a good thing I knew how someone with a broken arm was supposed to act.
"Right," Dr. Wells said. "Make sure you tell Ba-"
"I heard every word," Barry interrupted, stopping right next to us.
"Could you show me how to stop that fast?" I asked. "I don't like crashing into things."
