Chapter 18 We Have a Reverse?
"Okay. Explain further," Shayera snapped. "I have a person nobody can kill looking for me. Why? Why should I believe you?"
"Because he's after me too," Hawkman said. "If you come with me we might be able to hold him off longer than I could on my own."
"I was never meant to fight on my own," I sang quietly. Everyone looked at me. "Sorry. Don't mind me. Carry on."
Cisco walked away from Shayera and sat down behind his the curved desk of computers. I almost followed him, but decided that my computer would be of more use to me than his would, so went that way instead.
Shayera absently spread her wings and folded them again, knocking the few items that were on the table onto the floor. "So you want me to go with you to fight an endless battle against a person who can't die?"
"Yes."
"Great," I said, determined that, even if this person couldn't die, that I was going to help in any way I could. "When do we start chasing down his crazy person?"
"You cannot help us," Hawkman said. "You humans don't have enough strength to-"
"Try telling that to Buck and Steve why don't you?" Barry said, swinging his legs. "They've got to be the strongest guys on Earth."
I shook my head and noticed that Cisco had a sucker in his mouth. "Clark is- I'm not going to finish that and screw up his secret identity."
Cisco looked up and pulled the sucker out of his mouth. "Who's secret identity? How many superheroes do you know exactly?"
"Shall I list them for you?" I asked, completely joking, because I couldn't remember them all.
"Yes please!" Cisco said eagerly.
"We're kind of in the middle of things right now Skye," Caitlin said. "Tell him later."
Cisco looked put out and I felt a little annoyed as well, but I also wanted to pay attention to everything else.
"They can hold up fine," Shayera said. "I've seen them fight against things that would kill a normal person. They heal fast too."
"I'm glad you noticed," Barry said. He looked over at me. "Skye, I was waiting for you to notice, but you really need to change. You look terrible in that right now."
I looked down and saw that the suit was in tatters again. I glanced up at Cisco. "I did not try. I swear."
Cisco grinned. "You got two meta-humans so I can hardly complain now can I?"
"That's never stopped you before," Barry muttered.
I got up, grabbed my clothes and ran off to change. I did it at normal speed this time, giving everyone else time to talk without my sarcasm 'helping'.
I walked at a leisurely pace back to the Cortex. About half way there, I came across Dr. Wells. He was turning like he was going to run into the wall. He looked at me in surprise. "Well hello Skye," he said pleasantly. "I thought you'd left."
"Nope. I felt like slowing down a bit." I looked at his wheelchair, which was still angled toward the wall. "Is your wheelchair broken? It looks like you're about to crash."
Dr. Wells glanced down at the wheels of he wheelchair. "No, I'm sure it's fine. Though I appreciate your concern." He smiled a little. "Shayera is just getting ready to leave. It was decided that she would accompany Hawkman to find Vandel."
"And I'm not going?" I felt disappointed at that realization. Shayera had become part of the team and a trustworthy friend in just over a day.
Dr. Wells shook his head. "We all came to the agreement that you and Barry would be of more use here. We don't know how many more meta-humans were created by the Particle Accelerator explosion, and no one in this city but you and Barry can stop them."
I sighed. "Good night Dr. Wells."
"Good night Skye. Don't forget to say goodbye to Shayera."
"As if I would," I muttered.
I walked quickly down the hallway and stepped into the Cortex. Shayera was packing her tools into her black backpack, which the wings had been removed from. She didn't look up, or speak when I entered, but I could tell she knew I was there.
I never had been good at leaving, or saying goodbye to any of my friends that I'd made over the last few years. Some of them were close, some were farther away, some had died fighting their various enemies, and others, like Buck, Steve, Natasha, and the other Avengers, remained in constant contact with me.
Shayera finished her packing and turned to me. We stood there, staring at each other for a moment, before Shayera sighed. "I guess this is where we say bye?"
"Nope," I said. "This is where I ask where the heck you're going and when you're coming back."
Shayera smiled. "I don't know where we're going, but I'm hoping to come back soon."
I walked over to her and put a hand on her shoulder. "I swear. If you die, I'm going to find you and tell you how evil it was of you to let yourself get killed."
Shayera laughed and gave me a hug. "I promise I won't try. I'll do the same for you if you die."
I pulled away and grinned. "I won't die. Guaranteed. I've got an amazing team to prevent me from doing so."
Shayera shouldered her pack and we both started for the door. "Barry wanted to tell you something. He said to meet you at his lab."
I pushed open the door and held it open for her. "I hope it's something useful and not something totally random and Barry-ish."
Shayera smiled and spread her wings. "Want a lift? I'm going that direction."
"No thanks. I enjoy running below you. I don't know why, it just feels cool."
She nodded and leaped into the sky. I ran below her, my green lightning making the thin layer of snow shine. I could see Shayera when I looked up at the station. She circled twice before soaring away over the city.
I shoved the door open and glanced around. There were only four people left, one of whom was Eddie. They each had a desk lamp on, casting a dim gold glow out to where I stood. I ordered myself to focus and jogged up the stairs.
Barry was sitting on the edge of his desk looking at the bulletin board. It was covered with newspaper clippings and pictures, bits of articles, graphs, and ribbons also hung there. It was an odd collage.
Barry looked away from the board to watch me come in and close the door. I walked over to him and looked at the center piece of paper. It was a newspaper headline that read, 'Nora Allen Murdered by Husband'. I looked at Barry. "You dug all this up?"
He nodded, biting his lower lip. "You remember that day as well as I do. The Man in Yellow that was there is back. I'm sure of it."
I looked absently out the window and stopped. I took two steps forward. "That one?" I asked, pointing to the rooftop across the street where a man in a yellow suit, just like mine and Barry's, stood on the roof. His eyes glowed red. "The one who looks like your stereotypical bad guy with glowing eyes?"
Barry stood up and stepped behind me. "That's one."
The man stared at us for another second then ran down the side of the building, red lightning flashing around him as he ran. Barry and I exchanged looks and both shot down the stairs and outside in pursuit of the man.
I wove through traffic, doing my best to keep Barry and the man in my sight at all times. I was running as fast as I could without creating a sonic boom but the Man in Yellow was always just a little too far ahead.
Barry and I both skidded to a stop in the center of a football stadium. The Man in Yellow was standing less than ten feet away, his whole body vibrating to keep his identity hidden. The man stared at us silently his penetrating red eyes glaring daggers at us.
"What do you want?" I asked, surprising myself with how calm I felt given the situation we were in. "And who are you?"
The man was silent for a second longer before he spoke. His voice vibrating. "If you want to know who I am, you'll have to catch me first."
"Can we not-" Barry started, but before he could finish the Man in Yellow ran into the stands.
There was a small pop as Barry and I took off after him. We ran around the bleachers, chasing the man. He led us around and around in giant circles.
He ran back down into the field, Barry and I chased him. Before either of us could stop he attacked, using our forward momentum against us. He punched both of us when he ran forward. Barry and I were flung back at least eight feet.
The wind rushed out of my lungs, leaving me out of breath. Barry rolled so that he was on his hands and knees. He was panting. He glanced at me to make sure I was okay, then flew at the Man in Yellow. The man easily avoided all of Barry's attacks and knocked him to the ground again.
I managed to get my breath back and leaped to my feet. I punched the man in the face as hard as I could. He recoiled, stumbling back a couple of steps. I ran at him again, lightning flickering around my arm as I swung. I missed, and my momentum once more worked against me as the man kicked my back and sent me sprawling again.
Barry was still on the ground, his eyes mostly closed. He was gritting his teeth and his breath hissed as it passed in and out. Seeing him that way lit something in me. I slowly got to my feet, keeping my eyes on the man.
The man's red eyes met mine. He shot forward in the next second, punching the side of my head. Black spots danced in my vision and I collapsed to all fours. I saw his red lightning flickering as he ran away. I shook my head hard to clear my vision. It didn't help, but I stood up anyway.
I walked over to Barry and knelt next to him. "Are you alright Barry?" I asked. The black spots hadn't gone away and I felt a little sleepy.
Barry groaned. "I'm good." He got to his feet and I stood up straight. He almost fell backwards. I caught him and held him steady.
"You are definitely not good," I said unnecessarily. "You are not running yourself to S.T.A.R. Labs."
Barry met my eyes. "You aren't running me there either. He hit you hard enough in the head to knock you down and make your eyes a little unfocused. Don't look at me like that! I know you well enough to know when something's not right."
"So... Cisco then?"
"No."
Barry scooped me up and shot out of the stadium. After about five seconds he set me down on the hospital bed in S.T.A.R. Labs. He smiled slightly. "I'm taking you."
"Barry-"
"Quiet," Barry ordered. He looked worried. "I'm calling Caitlin, she'll be here soon. Don't fall asleep unless she tells you to."
I smiled. "Thanks."
Barry touched my shoulder and started for the door, pulling his phone out as he walked. "Hey, Caitlin? Yeah, Skye and I kind of did something stupid... I'm fine... She sort of almost got knocked out." I heard the faint sounds of Caitlin shouting. Barry glanced back at me with an amused smile before he slipped out quietly.
