It turned out, we didn't get to find our meta-human. Oliver had to leave the next day, leaving us without a trace of Madman, as Cisco now called him there was also no sign of Captain Boomerang, again, Cisco's name.
I entered S.T.A.R. Labs to find Cisco sitting in front of his computers with a sucker in his mouth, as usual. Only this time, he was talking to someone. I looked around and noticed Barry's suit was gone. I smiled and sat down next to Cisco. "What's he after now?"
"A fire," Cisco said. "Almost there. Turn... right."
The small red dot that I guessed was Barry swerved to the right.
"You should see it now."
"Yes I do," Barry's voice crackled through the speakers.
"Who are you talking to?" Caitlin asked.
Cisco quickly turned off every monitor in the room and spun around. "Hmm?"
"It wasn't Barry was it?"
Cisco shook his head. "Nope. Haven't talked to him."
"Cisco! Cisco! You still there?" Barry shouted. "Any advice?"
Cisco sighed and turned the computers back on. "Yes I'm still here. Just get everyone out of there pronto."
The red dot on the map sped back and forth then shot away, stopping at a park.
Caitlin pushed between us. "Barry it's Caitlin."
I didn't need to be standing next to him to know that he was kicking himself. "Heey Caitlin." Again, without being there I knew he was biting his lip. After an awkward pause he said, "How's your day?" in an overly cheerful tone."
"Well it was going pretty good."
I got up and started for my work space. "Let us have some fun once in a while! We need it."
"I don't see you out there with him," Caitlin snapped.
I frowned at her. "Did you have a run in with Madman too?"
Caitlin rolled her eyes and didn't respond. Barry shot into the room grabbed his clothes, left, came back, and put his suit on the mannequin without Cisco and Caitlin noticing until he stopped to pick up his bag. "I'm off to my lab. See you later," he gave me a wink and waved.
"See ya Bear!" I called after him as he shot out the door.
Cisco snickered and started fiddling with one of the computers. I started tinkering with the large box that had mysteriously appeared in my work space overnight.
"WHOAWHOAWHOA!" Barry shouted through the speakers. "SPARKY! HELP ME! AGH!"
I shot up from where I'd been sitting next to Cisco and put on my black suit. "Why? What's up?"
"JUST GET-" there was a loud crash and Barry gasped. "NOW!"
I sprinted out the door and followed Cisco's instructions to where Barry was. A yellow Hummer missing the driver door was parked at the end of the alley. Barry was leaning against a chain link fence while a strong looking man, who looked vaguely familiar, advanced slowly. The car door lay on the ground and glass was everywhere.
Barry's eyes landed on me and relief spread across his face, but it turned to fear as I shot toward the man. Barry shook his head vigorously, but I'd already started my punch. My hand connected with the man's back with a crack. I screamed in pain and recoiled in a flicker of sparks. I could tell just by looking that I'd broken most of the bones in my hand. I hissed and glared at the man as he turned to me.
A cruel smile flicked across his face. Barry's eyes flashed with yellow light and he grabbed the car door, hitting it on the man's side. His whole arm turned to metal and the door bent. The man seemed completely fine as he turned and punched Barry in the chest. Barry flew back against the fence with a clank.
The man advanced on me, curling his hand into a fist, his arm turned to metal again. He punched and I ducked, dodging his attacks until he started using both hands. His left hand connected with my side and I felt bones crack and I fell to the ground gasping in pain. I tried to push myself up without luck.
The man raised his fist. "Looks like you were born to take a beating," he sneered. His fist started to come down. A flash of yellow brought the feeling of someone carrying me. "Skye, are you still awake?"
I groaned and looked up at Barry. His face was tight and he looked like the effort of carrying me and running was almost to much. I nodded. "I'm alive. I think."
He managed a small smile before looking at our surroundings again. "Almost there. A second more," he muttered.
I got the feeling that he was saying that more to reassure himself than me. The blurred buildings were replaced by a white ceiling for less than a second before I felt Barry set me down on one of the hospital beds. He collapsed with his arms crossed on the edge of my bed. His eyes flickered shut and he fell the rest of the way to the floor.
I was dimly aware of Cisco shouting for Caitlin. I didn't know how I wasn't unconscious. I almost wished I was.
Caitlin and Cisco hauled Barry over to the other bed and got him bandaged up before Caitlin came back to me. "Skye. What did you do?"
My phone started buzzing. I glanced at the screen. "Could you hand me that?" I asked, holding out a hand for the phone.
Caitlin frowned but did what I asked. I quickly hit answer. "Hey Buck, what do you want?"
"I was wondering if we could come see what you're up to," Buck said. "The Captain thinks you might need help."
I smiled slightly. "How does he know these things? Ouch! Caitlin!" Caitlin stopped examining my side and leaned back with a disapproving look.
"Are you okay?" Buck suddenly sounded alarmed. "What happened?"
"I'll tell you when you get here," I said tightly, fighting off the dark cloud that threatened to take over my mind. "I need medical attention. Talk to you later." Before Buck could object I hung up and placed my phone next to my bed. "Okay Dr. Snow. Take it away."
I closed my eyes and let myself drift into sleep.
I woke up as Barry finished telling Cisco, Caitlin, and Dr. Wells what had happened.
"A man of steel," Dr. Wells mused.
"Taken," I grunted, pushing myself up to sitting again.
Cisco stared at me. "How many heroes do you know?"
"That's for me to know and you to not know," I said.
Caitlin started walking toward me. "You shouldn't be doing that."
"I'm fine Caitlin!" I leaped to my feet and instantly collapsed as pain shot through my side. "Okay. Maybe not." I rolled onto my back. "I'll just stay here... on the floor."
Barry laughed. "How is it down there sis?"
"Actually a lot better. Don't make me move."
Caitlin gave in after I insisted the floor was much more comfortable. She went back over to Cisco and Dr. Wells.
Barry and I hardly moved until Caitlin gave us the all clear. Barry instantly shot away, and I just got up and changed into street clothes. I decided to go see Iris at the same time I decided not to use super speed to get there.
I waved to the three and started for the door. When I got outside I turned my face to the sky and sighed. It had been a long time since I'd actually walked anywhere and I vowed that I'd do it more often.
It was a beautiful day as I turned onto the street Jitters was on. I could see the orange sign from the corner. I jogged across the street and pushed open the door.
Iris was standing in front of the same man Barry and I had fought against the previous night.
"-took a beating last night," he was saying. "Why don't you write about that?"
Iris stared at the man. I could tell she was nervous, though neither one had noticed me yet. "Tony, I just remembered I'm supposed to call Barry and-"
The name Tony rung a bell in my head. He reached out and snatched Iris's phone, crushing it and dropping it in the tip cup, followed by a hundred dollar bill. "For the damage," he growled. He turned toward me and froze.
I glared at him. "You leave Iris alone," I snarled. I had to focus hard to prevent my eyes glimmering with green lightning, as Barry had told me they did when I got mad. I turned to the side. "Door. There."
Tony gave me a wicked sneer and stomped out the door. I turned to Iris. "Was that the bully from school?"
Iris smiled. "Indeed it was. Thanks." She cast a look at the tip cup and pulled out her phone. "Dad is not going to be impressed."
I didn't want to talk about our old rivalries, even if I'd been the one that always managed to scare Tony into leaving us, meaning Barry, alone. "So... anything new with you?"
Iris must have understood because she gave me another smile and gestured for me to sit down. "Yes. I've been able to write more about the Flash and the Spark. Did you know they know Starling City's Arrow? I saw them a couple of nights ago. Flash was acting strange and Spark and Arrow stopped him with some help from S.T.A.R. Labs." She beamed.
I did my best to look surprised. "They work with S.T.A.R.?
Iris shrugged. "It seems so. I haven't gotten around to asking them about it yet though."
"How strange was the Flash acting?"
"He was really, really angry. He pulled Eddie out of the car and threw him on the ground. If Spark and Arrow hadn't shown up..." Iris shook her head. "I don't know what would have happened but it wouldn't have been good."
"So when are you going to ask S.T.A.R. Labs?" I asked, trying to picture Cisco's reaction to Iris's call and snickering.
"Once I'm finished with my work here. It's kind of high on my priority list. Oh! Hey Eddie!" Iris stopped leaning against the counter and walked over to where Eddie and Barry were standing. She gave Eddie a hug and Barry narrowed his eyes at Eddie's back.
I smiled and walked up behind Iris as Eddie said, "I actually came for Skye. Barry said we would want her help."
Iris pulled away. "Oh... okay."
Eddie kissed her forehead. "I'll come back later. I promise. Come on Skye."
I followed Eddie out the door and Barry fell into step beside me. Eddie started explaining what had happened for my benefit, but I already knew it all so I tuned it out. A trio of familiar motorcycles were going around the block. They passed us several times before Eddie noticed and stopped talking.
"Are they following us?" he asked, turning to me.
I shrugged and smiled at his confused expression. "Following me more like. Keep going. They're friends."
Eddie frowned at me and kept walking. He led us all the way to the yellow Hummer. He gestured to it. "The man driving it wasn't hurt by our bullets at all. His skin looked like it turned into metal when we hit."
Barry tried to come up with something sciencey to explain it while I walked around the car. Pretending to not know what had happened. I found several small chunks of metal, which I put in a bag while Barry and Eddie were arguing.
I opened up the trunk and stopped. "Guys. Come look at this."
Barry looked over my shoulder at the metal barrels marked 'Keystone Iron Works'. "Keystone... they moved shop after the Accelerator explosion."
Eddie nodded. "It's not far from here. Let's go check it out."
Again I found myself walking next to Barry behind Eddie. Barry looked mildly annoyed by this, but made no comment.
We turned onto a street where four men were loading metal barrels into a truck. Eddie showed his badge to them and started talking. I didn't pay attention until I heard, "-seen this man? His name is Tony Woodward and-"
"He's a moron," I offered. Eddie shot me a withering look. "He is though!"
One of the men was staring at the picture Eddie was holding with a look of horror. Eddie pointed at him. "You know him?"
The man's eyes widened and he shook his head. I narrowed my eyes at him. He noticed and started running. "Hey!" Eddie shouted.
"Straw!" I shouted, unable to resist the joke.
Eddie glared at me one last time before running after the man. Barry hesitated then waved to me and shot away. I dashed after him. The alley Barry led me through spit us out in front of the man Eddie was chasing. He stopped looking terrified and Eddie shoved him against the wall. "What do you know?"
The man's eyes darted around. "I swear! I d-didn't kill him!"
"Clearly," Barry said.
Eddie gave Barry a look that clearly meant 'shut up'. "He's not dead. Tell me what happened to him."
"Not dead. B-but-" Eddie glared and the man paled. "H-he'd just gotten fired by the boss. He got really mad. We t-tried to stop him, but he fell into the vat of metal. We assumed he was dead!"
Eddie frowned and let the man go. "Come on Allen."
Neither Barry or I moved. "Both of you!" Eddie called impatiently. "Hurry up!"
Barry rolled his eyes. I punched his shoulder and jogged to catch up with Eddie. He looked at me curiously as Barry trudged after us. "How did you two end up in front?"
"Uuuhhh... shortcut," I said.
"Oh."
My phone started ringing again. I answered it without looking at the screen. "Hello?"
"This is very important," Cisco's voice said. "We need you and Barry. Now."
"Why?" I asked, stopping. "Cisco, what's wrong?"
Eddie had stopped to look at me.
"Nothing's wrong. I need you to come see this. I found a way you can knock out Iron Man."
"Cisco that's taken too, but I'll get Barry."
"Okay, thanks." There was a beep as Cisco hung up.
I looked at Eddie. "Barry and I need to go. Sorry."
Eddie shrugged. "Fine. Go ahead."
"Big Bear!" I called back to Barry.
Before Barry could respond there was a sound of squealing tires as the trio of motorcycles stopped next to us. I grinned as the one closest to me took off his helmet to reveal Steve. The one closest to Barry was Buck and the one next to Steve was Natasha.
Steve smiled at me. "If I didn't know better I would think you need a ride."
"A ride is unnecessary but appreciated," I said, jumping onto the back of the motorcycle.
Barry had gotten on behind Buck. Steve put his helmet back on. I waved to Eddie as we sped toward S.T.A.R. Labs.
We stopped in front of the main doors and I got off. Steve took off his helmet and reached underneath the seat, pulling out his red, white, and blue shield. He slipped it onto his arm and walked toward me.
Buck, Natasha, and Barry were all right behind him. I held the door open for them. When they were all inside I ran in and got to the Cortex before everyone else.
Cisco grinned at me when I sat down on the floor and waited for the others. When he saw Steve and Buck his smile grew. "Hello Captain!"
"Took you long enough," Steve said, placing his shield on the desk. "What did you want us for?"
