Chapter 1 Hello Again
I walked up the stairs of the deserted police station. Joe had told me that my brother was working late tonight and had the station to himself. I thought of that as a good thing.
One door stood open slightly, light pouring out of the crack. I opened it a little more. Peeking around the edge. He was leaned over his desk, staring intently at the computer screen.
I rapped the door frame with a finger. "Barry?"
Barry looked up and a broad grin spread across his face. "Skye!"
I opened the door the rest of the way and stepped into the cluttered room. Barry wove his way around several tables and gave me a big hug. "It's good to see you again sis."
I hugged him back. "Good to see you too Barry." I pulled away and looked around at his office. There were a large number of tables, all piled high with papers and random things salvaged from crime scenes. A map of New York hung on a bulletin board next to a desk with three computers. "Look at the mess you've made of this place!"
Barry smiled sheepishly. "Yeah... I was going to clean it yesterday but..."
"I love it! It looks just like my room."
Barry raised an eyebrow and smirked. "I see you haven't changed much."
"Not really no." I sat down in one of the office chairs and looked at Barry. "I heard S.T.A.R. Labs is firing up their Particle Accelerator tonight."
"Yes they are," Barry smiled and sat back down at his computer, but didn't look at it. "Iris and I went to see Dr. Wells's presentation earlier this evening."
"Was it interesting?" I asked curiously.
Thunder rumbled outside and Barry frowned out the window, muttering something about there not supposed to be rain, before he looked back at me. "It was." He launched into a technical explanation about what the Particle Accelerator would do when it was started up that very few people would be able to understand. Thankfully, I was one of those few people.
He was interrupted by a loud pop and the light going out. He fell silent. The room illuminated only a fraction of a degree by the three computers on Barry's desk.
"I think there's a hole in my ceiling," Barry said, standing. "I'll go check."
"We should change the light first," I pointed out. "Then you could see so you won't slip on anything."
Barry nodded. "Good point. There's a stepladder over there. Could you get it for me? I'll get the light bulb."
I looked where Barry had pointed and saw the stepladder right within reach. I picked it up and started for the light, putting the stepladder underneath it.
Barry was coming back with the bulb. He must have hit his desk, because the computer on his desk wobbled and he winced.
"I can put it in," I offered when he was at my side.
"Alright," Barry pulled the bulb out of the box and handed it to me.
I pulled out the burned out bulb and replaced it. The light flickered to life, then died again.
"I just bought that one!" Barry exclaimed.
I reached up to pull it out when there was a huge bang and a brilliant flash of white light, then darkness.
I opened my eyes and instantly closed them again, sitting up before attempting to open them again. I sat on a hospital bed in S.T.A.R. Labs central room. "Who can I blame for the medical lamp above my face?" I asked irritably, blinking the colored dots out of my vision.
Someone tackled me in a bear hug before I could see very well. "Skye! You're alright!"
I pushed whoever it was off, and blinked away the last of the colored spots. "Oh, hey Cisco."
"What exactly happened?" I asked.
Barry was standing a short distance away. He shrugged when I looked at him, clearly showing that he was as clueless as I was.
"You were struck by lightning." I turned my head to see Dr. Harrison Wells sitting in a electric wheelchair. He smiled slightly. "We're glad to have you back Skye, but that isn't exactly the best way to announce yourself."
"You and Barry were in a coma for nine months!" Caitlin said. "We weren't sure you were going to live!"
"No offense meant," Barry interrupted. "While I'm grateful to all of you, but shouldn't we be in a hospital?"
"We found you first," Dr. Wells said. "The hospitals wouldn't have been able to do as much for you as we have."
I got the feeling he wasn't telling me something, but before I could ask Barry spoke again. "We need to go see Iris. Let her know we're alright."
"That is a very good plan," I stood up, surprised at how stable I felt and started for the door. "We'll be back for some answers later."
I looked at Barry as soon as we left the S.T.A.R. Labs building. "You need to lead the way. I've been out of town long enough that I don't know where we're going."
Barry grinned. "Of course. How were your travels, by the way?" he asked as we started down the sidewalk.
"They were a little slow going since I didn't let myself rent a car the whole time. In other words, I had an amazing time," I grinned. "I'll really need to take you to Yellowstone sometime. That was truly spectacular."
Our conversation about my United States travels lasted all the way to a small cafe called Jitters. Barry held the door open for me.
I stepped inside and looked around. This was clearly a popular place to be at this time in the afternoon.
"Barry!" Iris came out from behind the counter and ran up to us. "You have no idea how worried I've been about you two!"
I smiled. "We're fine Iris. All in one piece and not dead."
A waitress next to us tripped. Time seemed to slow down. I ran forward and caught the platter before it could hit the floor. Barry jumped to my side and caught the two cups of coffee.
Time returned to normal. Iris and several other people were staring at us.
Barry looked around and must have realized what had happened at the same time I did.
"We, uh, we have to go," Barry said quickly. "Come on Skye."
