I went to the Valley of Green on the morning of my seventeenth birthday. Dad asked me to mow the lawn, but heck. Who cared about the lawn when you could hoverscoot?

Hoverscooting was my favorite past time as a teenager. It helped me get my mind off Mother's death. She died when I was twelve years old, from a rare illness called pneumonia. She and I used to hoverscoot all the time at the Valley of Green.

I remember it perfectly: its lush, green hills and meadows, its wildflowers, and its lake. A meteorite impact a thousand years ago into Greenville's soil created it.

Mother and I would get up early and spend all day flying and digging for fossils, while Dad worked at the space center. Life seemed so perfect, but everything changed when Mother died. I lost myself to a state of despair, but I tried to hide it from "Dada." That was what I used to call him, just like how Dada and PPMC liked to call me "Dan the Man."

"The doctor instructed for you not to eat or drink anything for six hours so we can run an abdominal CT scan on you," I stated to the female patient.

The scathing look she gave me should cause me to cower in the corner, but instead, I gave her a bored look in return.

"Why can't I eat or drink anything? That's stupid," she complained loudly.

Keeping my affect flat, I answered, "You came in to the ER with the complaint of nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain for twenty-four hours. Standard treatment requires you not to eat or drink until your symptoms have abated."

"Whatever, when am I getting some pain meds?" she rudely asked.

"Can you rate your pain on a scale of 1-10, ten being the worst pain you have ever experienced?

"12," she answered.

DECEIT

Blinking slowly, I took a deep breath. The emotion of deceit had permeated her thoughts, mixed with other emotions, since she arrived. Deceit was now front and center.

Now we were getting somewhere.

"So if a herd of elephants ran through this room and trampled you, the abdominal pain you are currently experiencing would still be worse?" I deadpanned.

"What the hell did you just say to me? Are you calling me a liar?"

"Are you?"

"Get out of my room! I want to speak to the supervisor!" She yelled while throwing a pillow at me. Her purse fell off the side of the hospital stretcher when she did, and all of its contents spilled out. Two bags of chips, one chocolate bar, a twenty ounce cola and a pack of Marlboro Black now littered the floor. Rolling my eyes, I exited the room.

"Another satisfied customer," I drawled as I dropped her chart on the doctor's pile of other charts.

I headed to the bathroom to take a leak, but when I exited, I noticed the hospital supervisor, Stan, stalking through the nurse's station. He hadn't seen me yet, ...

The blizzards had not recurred in seven maes now, and the fire was hot. It crackled and it danced over melting Rah'sheen splinters, hitting the boy who had brought it to life with unseen ripples of heat.

Vaarin, for that was the boy's name, began to bend closer towards the little fire that fed him warmth. He might have leaned further in to burn the tip of his nose simply to experience the sensation of hotness in this damned cold place, had it not been for the sound of shuffling feet and hoarse grunts that informed him of someone's arrival.

He watched as a large barrel-chested man trundled into view, cloak fluttering in the wind, leaving deep engravings of his booted feet behind in the malicious snow as he staggered, and it was visible that the walking itself wasn't an easy undertaking by any means. The man was made to look larger still by his layered woolen outfit. He was holding a wooden crossbow in one hand. The crossbow looked small and sorry in the hands of the giant, as mice before hound, not much of a threat even with the thick metal bolt fixed on its abutments.

"Shit in the Three Spokes," the giant was muttering as he took seat beside Vaarin on the log like they had been friends since infantile. "When will this accursed snow turn to thaw for once and leave us be?"

"Not permanently, my friend," Vaarin replied with pointed nonchalance. "Never permanently."

The smell of smoke is strong.

I inhale and exhale letting the cloud fog my vision and my mind. I lean back in the armchair and close my eyes. I know someone, a girl, is whispering in my ear. I'm not too sure what she is saying but the way she presses against me with her chest says it all.

Part of me, somewhere deep wants to be the guy who listens, who cares about others but I can't, or maybe I won't. I open my eyes, the room is misty and dark. Everyone is talking, drinking or smoking. I pick up the bottle of jack on the table. I take a swig, it burns my throat, but I'm used to it by now. I kinda like the pain

I wipe at the corner of my mouth with my sleeve and pause, allowing my eyes to adjust. I can see now that the girl in front of me is blonde, she's wearing a nice green top that accentuates her breasts. I know I'm making it obvious that I'm looking, but I think she enjoys it.

She leans in a little closer, licks her glossed lips and I can smell the strawberry on her breath. I can't help but match her movement. I don't know her name, but it doesn't matter. She knows mine. Everyone know's mine.

"Kai, shall we get out of here?"

I don't know whether it was the alcohol or the weed, but her question feels like the best thing I've heard all evening. This party is a drag and I know I'd have a lot more fun with Blondie. I can't remember if I say yes or just mumble an incoherent response but soon I'm being lead into a back room.

Blondie takes her top off and I watch as it falls to the floor. The bra she's wearing is laced, but I'd much prefer it on the floor with her top. She kisses me, that same scent of strawberry on her breath and it's sickly sweet. She kisses me like her life depends on it and I'm more than happy to comply.
