CHAPTER SEVENTY SIX

Season 4, Episode 10: Glee Actually

Ownership of Glee: FOX, Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, Brad Falchuk

= = =

An angry Artie wheels past Finn and Violet.

"Whoa... hey, dude, are you all right?" Finn asks.

Violet sees the injury. "Whoa, wh-wh-what happened to your face?"

"I fell, okay? The stupid janitor didn't put salt on the ramp, like he's supposed to, and my wheels don't have chains, so I slipped backwards and tipped over on the ice. It's fine. It's nothing." Artie remarks.

"No, no, no, no... hey, hey, hey. That's not nothing. That's some pretty serious road rash." Finn says.

"Let us take you to the nurse's office, all right?" Violet offers.

Artie says nothing as the two wheel him to the nurse's office.

= = =

"You hit your head pretty hard. I'm going to go call your mother. Lay down till she gets here." The nurse says and walks out of the office.

"Want me to help you get up on the cot?" Violet asks.

"No. I don't want anybody to help me with anything. I'm tired of being so helpless, I'm tired of everybody pitying me, and I'm tired of being in this damn chair." Artie snaps.

Violet sighs. "Artie we just want to help you."

"Anyone could have fallen on the ice, all right?" Finn says.

"Yeah, but they could've gotten back up, instead of laying there screaming for help until some freshman girl showed up." Artie bites back.

"Dude, don't bite our heads off. But you need some rest, so I'm going to help you out, all right?" Finn says and gets Artie onto the cot.

Artie sighs. "I just wish I was never in that dumb chair."

Finn nods. "I know, buddy. I know."

That's the last thing Artie hears before he slips into sleep.

~ Artie's Dream ~

Artie wakes up to find himself wearing a McKinley letterman jacket... and his legs are working.

Artie runs down the hall to find Tina. "Tina! Look. Can you believe it?" He asks.

"Be-Believe what?" Tina stutters.

"Why are you stuttering again?" Artie asks in confusion.

"She never stopped because you never became friends." A familiar Irish accent says from behind Artie.

"Rory?! What are you doing here? And talk slowly, so I can understand you." Artie tells his friend.

Rory smiles. "I'm your Christmas guardian angel. And I've granted your wish. Your car accident never happened. You were never in that dumb chair."

"That's insane." Artie retorts.

"Don't believe me? Ask Becky." Rory says.

Becky is in a Cheerios uniform... sporting a baby bump. "Merry Christmas, stud. Want to fool around? I can't get pregnant."

"What? No." Artie says and walks away from her.

"Becky's the school slut now. No one treats her with any respect." Rory informs.

"But I do. I took her on a date." Artie remembers.

Rory shakes his head. "No, you didn't. You were too busy throwing losers in Dumpsters to give her any attention or treat her with kindness, and as a result, she never learned any self-respect."

Artie pales when he sees Finn, Puck and Karofsky messing with Kurt.

"Hey! Hey, Kurt! Nice cape! Who are you supposed to be... Super Homo?" Finn sneers with a cackle.

"What are you guys doing?" Artie asks.

Finn smirks. "Just having some fun with Little Lord Gay Boy." He answers.

"But you guys aren't straight douche bags. You sang Lady Gaga songs." Artie informs.

"Keep telling those dirty lies, and we'll break your friggin' legs." Puck spits before he and Finn walk off with Karofsky.

Artie helps Kurt gather his things. "Kurt, didn't you graduate?"

"I should've, but I couldn't bear coming to school more than twice a week, because of all the bullying. All the homeschooling set me back a year." Kurt says.

"What does Violet say about that?" Artie asks.

"Violet who?" Kurt asks.

"Violet Corcoran... your fiancée." Artie answers.

Kurt laughs. "That's a good one. Me and Violet Berry engaged."

Artie furrows his brows in confusion. "But you proposed to her on your graduation day. And she was a Berry until she got disowned. She's been a Corcoran for two years."

Kurt sighs. "Look... I would never go for someone like Violet Berry. She's a total bitch. Plus... she's dating Finn Hudson."

Artie pales.

When Kurt walks away, Rory walks up to Artie. "Since glee club never happened, Kurt never had the courage to come out as bisexual. And he and Violet never got together." Rory explains.

"Why the hell is she dating Finn?" Artie asks.

Rory smirks. "Finn's the quarterback... and Violet's the head Cheerio."

Artie walks into the Spanish room, sighing in relief when he sees Will.

"Mr. Shue, thank God you're here. We need to call an emergency meeting of the glee club." Artie says.

"What glee club? I couldn't get enough of you brats interested to get that lame idea off the ground." Will slurs.

Terri walks up, holding a baby doll. "Will, I need your paycheck before you blow it all on booze and flannel shirts. Sheets and Things is having a big Christmas sale, and we desperately need an air purifier for our moldy garbage heap of an apartment."

"That's a doll." Artie points out.

"Shh! He's so drunk he doesn't know the difference." Terri says and then laughs. "You're cute."

"Where's Miss Pillsbury?" Artie asks.

"In Hawaii. With her dear, sweet husband Coach Tanaka. It's a match made in heaven, right, honey?" Terri asks her husband.

"That's right." Will nods and hands Terri his paycheck.

= = =

Artie is shocked when he walks into the library to see... "Rachel? What are you doing here? You live in New York. You go to the most prestigious drama school in the country."

Rachel sighs. "Well, I am gonna be in the Lima Community Players' production of The Music Man."

"Tell me you're at least playing Marian the Librarian." Artie says.

Rachel shakes her head. "No, that's the lead. I'm just in the chorus. Excuse me." She says.

"Hey did you know Violet's dating your ex-boyfriend?" Artie asks.

"I am aware that my ex-sister is dating Finn Hudson, but he's not my ex-boyfriend." Rachel laments.

"Your ex-sister? But you and Violet made up and became sisters again." Artie states in confusion.

"I'm not her sister anymore. Ever since I was 6, she's always made me out to be the bad child. So three years ago, she got her dads to disown me." Rachel explains and walks off.

Artie grabs Rachel's wrist. "Rachel... what's going on?" He asks.

"Let go of me!" Rachel states.

"What happened you? What happened to all of us?" Artie asks.

Rachel starts shouting.

Artie runs out of the library and bumps into Violet.

"Watch where you're going." Violet snaps.

"Violet what's wrong with everyone? Why are you dating Finn and being so mean?" Artie asks.

Violet smirks. "I've been dating Finn for the last three years. I mean, we're the most popular kids in school — the quarterback and the head Cheerio."

"But you're in love with Kurt." Artie says adamantly.

Violet laughs coldly. "You think I'd ever want to date the king of homosexuality? No. No way."

"But you love him." Artie insists.

Finn strides down the hallway. "Hey. Are you messing with my girl? Dude, I know she's smoking hot but she's mine. So back off."

Violet smiles. "Thanks babe." She says and pecks his lips.

Artie walks off, completely disgusted.

= = =

Artie walks to the auditorium. "Rory! Rory, where are you?" He asks.

"What's wrong?" Rory asks.

"What's wrong?! Everything. How can everything be so messed up?" Artie asks. "And where the hell is Charlie?"

"You weren't in a wheelchair, so you were too busy playing football to join Glee. It turns out... you were the glue of Glee, Artie. The quiet, steady, beating heart of the group. No glue... no Glee. And Charlie is at North Lima High. The bullying he got for being gay was so much that he had to transfer schools." Rory answers.

"I can fix this. I can. I'll get them all back together. Just you watch, I'll fix it." Artie says determined.

= = =

Artie gathers the altered New Directions in the choir room.

"You're probably wondering why I've asked you all to meet me in the choir room." Artie says.

"This is Coach Sue's craft room." Rachel corrects.

"Well, in an alternate universe, it was the choir room." Artie states.

"I had a dream about that once." Rachel claims.

Artie nods. "I know. And it was a place that always made me feel safe. And I know it did for a lot of you, too. That's 'cause we danced together, we sang together, we took turns up here. Like Finn said, it's about the love of the music."

"Dude, are you high? I never said that." Finn claims.

"You sound even more delusional than you already are." Violet says from her spot next to Finn.

"Why don't you just show us what you mean?" Rachel insists.

Artie breaks out into 'Feliz Navidad.'

[Feliz Navidad by Artie]

No one says or does anything.

"That was so gay." Finn states. He looks to Violet. "C'mon babe. We'll both be late for practice."

The quarterback and head Cheerio walk out together.

"Abrams is acting weird. Says I'm supposed to be love with Hummel." Violet states.

Finn raises an eyebrow. "That's weird. But you'd never go for another guy would you?" He asks.

Violet smiles. "Finn, sweetie, I love you and you only. No one's going to take away what we have. Now let's go before Sue and Beiste have our heads for being late."

Finn smiles and kisses her. "I love you."

Violet smiles as she kisses back. "I love you too Finn."

= = =

Artie sees a wheelchair by the trophy case in the hallway.

"Is that mine?" He asks Rory.

"No. It's Quinn's. Without the encouragement and support from you and her friends in Glee, Quinn was never able to walk again after her accident." Rory states.

"Wait a minute, if there was no Glee Club, there was no Finchel wedding for her to drive to, so..." Artie trails off.

"Quinn texts and drives in every timeline, Artie." Rory tells him.

"Okay. Why isn't she in it?" Artie questions.

"She died." Rory informs.

Artie looks upset. "How?"

Rory shrugs. "Of a broken heart. Much like her body, her spirit never recovered."

Artie plucks the white rose from the chair and sits in it, wheeling down the hallway.

~ End of Artie's Dream ~

Artie wakes up from his dream having a newfound love for his wheelchair.

As long as he never sees that horrible alternate universe ever again.

In New York, Kurt and Rachel are preparing for their first Christmas away from Lima.

"Okay, what do we need for this tree?" Kurt asks his soon-to-be sister-in-law.

Rachel sighs. "It's just hopeless... Um..." she points behind Kurt.

Kurt turns around and smiles when he sees Burt. "Dad!"

Burt's laughing as he walks into view. "Hey, I'm not the only one here." He says.

Kurt raises an eyebrow but breaks out into a smile when it's revealed that Violet is also with Burt.

"Violet!" Kurt says and runs to his fiancée, hugging her.

"Surprise!" Violet says and Kurt kisses her.

Rachel gasps when she sees her sister. "Oh my God! This is amazing!"

Burt smiles. "Well, I got a tree... you need one?"

"Come in!" Kurt says to both of them.

"Come on, let's go look at it." Violet says.

The four walk out to see a beautiful tree.

"Oh, it's perfect." Rachel says.

"Yeah, well, I couldn't imagine you guys celebrating Christmas without a real tree." Burt states.

"You know, his mom used to always buy the tree. I'd always tell her to wait till I got home from work, but she never could. And then, the first Christmas after his mom died, I totally forgot about it. That is, until I saw little Kurt hanging his own special version of a Christmas ornament on his window shade Christmas Eve." Burt reminisces.

"Oh. My mom's perfume bottle. Oh, I always loved the way she smelled." Kurt says as he hugs Violet closer.

Burt nods. "So I pull him out of bed, I throw a coat on him, I drive straight through a snowstorm, right down to the Christmas tree sale. It was the first time he smiled since his mom died." He says, tearing up at the thought of his deceased wife.

"Okay, no tears on Christmas Eve." Rachel states.

"This box is full of happy memories, as well." Violet comments.

"All right, well, I wish I could stay, but can't really be late for a cruise, so..." Rachel says.

"Oh, hold on. You got to open this before you go." Violet says and hands her sister a gift.

"Uh, happy Hanukkah, merry Christmas." Burt says.

"Oh..." Rachel says as she's given her gift.

"It's for your first New York holiday season. Hang it together." Violet tells Rachel.

"Thank you." Kurt and Rachel Thank.

"And then you can go." Burt says.

Rachel nods. "Okay." She says.

= = =

After Rachel leaves for the cruise, Burt, Violet and Kurt are left in the apartment.

"Kurt, okay, this, to our very first New York Christmas." Violet says as she raises a glass of soda to her fiancé.

Kurt smiles. "Ha. I never thought I'd see this day. Us walking down the streets of New York, right after seeing a live Broadway musical."

"Well, the Rockettes might have better legs than me, but they can't touch my "Single Ladies" performance." Burt comments.

"That was the best musical I've ever seen." Violet states.

"Ah, it's freezing! I think it's time to check off another Hummel family tradition: Hot chocolate." Burt says.

= = =

The three get hot chocolate together, and Burt looks at his son and his daughter-in-law. They're walking towards an ice skating rink.

"Kurt, Violet, I have something to tell you, and I came here because it's the kind of thing I want to tell you face-to-face." Burt says.

"Don't like the sound of that." Kurt comments.

"Look, I'm just going to come out and say it because there's no... good way to say it. Uh, I have prostate cancer." Burt announces.

Kurt sighs. "Feel like I'm going to be sick." He says sadly. In an attempt to keep him calm, Violet gently rubs his back.

Burt sighs. "No, no, hey, hey, look at me. Do I look like a guy who's dying? We caught it early. You know, local stage, no spreading. Cure rate's nearly 100%."

"For healthy people, Dad." Kurt retorts.

"You've already had a heart attack." Violet remembers.

"The heart attack is what, you know, made me get checkups twice a year." Burt tells the two.

"It's just really scary to think that when I finally reach my destiny, that you won't be around to see it." Kurt says tearfully.

Burt looks at him. "Hey. I will be there. I promise. Look, can I just give you one piece of advice while we're still talking father to son? This is three times I've had to stare death in the eye. And you know the one thing I took away from all that? You have got to hold the people you love close to you no matter what."

Kurt looks concerned for Burt. "Dad, you okay? Do you need a pillow or tea, water?"

"No, Kurt, stop. Come on, let's focus on happy things. Like our Christmas traditions. I am looking forward to watching basketball on Christmas Day while you pretend you watch with me." Burt says.

"You mean while I secretly read Vogue?" Kurt states.

"That was never a secret." Violet admits.

Burt chuckles. "No, like our other Christmas traditions. Like on Christmas Eve, where we each exchange one gift."

Kurt smiles. "My favorite part."

Violet smiles as she hands Kurt his gift. "Before you open it, let me just say how proud I am of you for getting into NYADA. You are going to kick ass at that school."

Kurt smiles. "That's the plan."

Violet smiles. "But the reason why I'm here is not just because I wanted to come see you, but also because he didn't want us to miss out on another important holiday tradition." She says.

Kurt perks up. "Our Christmas duet?" He asks.

Violet nods. "Our Christmas duet. Come on. Get your skates on. It's almost midnight. Hurry up!" She says.

Violet and Kurt ice skate, singing 'White Christmas' together.

[White Christmas by Vurt]

At the end of their duet, they share a kiss while on the ice.

While in New York with Kurt, Burt and Violet and Burt are talking in the kitchen of Kurt and Rachel's apartment.

"Hey kiddo. You got any college plans?" Burt asks.

Violet smiles and turns her head towards Kurt — who's discussing the latest fashion trends with Rachel on the phone — before turning back to Burt.

"Don't tell Kurt or Rachel, but I'm thinking about applying to NYU. I'm thinking about applying for the performing arts scholarship in the spring." Violet answers.

Burt smiles and pats her back gently. "I think you'd do great at NYU. I think you'd do great just about anywhere. You're very smart and talented, Violet."

Violet blushes. "Thanks Dad."

Burt smiles. "You're welcome sweetheart."

= = =

Kurt and Violet lay next to each other, enjoying the other's company. And no, they didn't do anything inappropriate — they're just cuddling together.

"I'm happy to spend my first Christmas in New York with you, Violet." Kurt says.

"I'm happy to spend Christmas with you, Kurt. But while we're here, we do need to talk about something we've been putting off for the last few months." Violet says.

Kurt nods. "You're right. We need to start our wedding plans."

Violet smiles. "We can do some of that in a few days. I just... want to be prepared for the next chapter in our lives together."

"I understand baby. Really, I do. And believe me, we will start planning over your winter break." Kurt promises.

Violet smiles as she closes her eyes. "You're the best fiancé in the world."

Kurt chuckles. "No baby. That's all you."
