Season 4, Episode 15:  Girls (and Boys) on Film

Will looks to the glee club. "Everybody loves movies. They don't just tell stories... they transport us to other worlds. They are inspirational. They provide comfort, and they help us escape from our day-to-day anxieties."

"Like getting left at the altar?" Tina comments.

"Too soon." Violet warns.

Will nods to Tina. "Exactly. Or in your guys' case, studying for exams or... worrying about regionals. In any case, for this week's assignment, I want you to pick your favorite songs from your favorite movies."

There's cheers and applause.

Will smiles. "Okay, it's not that simple, guys. This is a group competition... boys against girls and we are doing mash-ups." He announces.

The new kids are excited. However Sam, Blaine and Charlie look weary. Brittany, Artie and Tina look concerned. Finn studies Violet's expression carefully.

Violet looks like she might be sick. "I need to step outside for a minute, Mr. Shue." She tells Will.

Will nods and lets her leave the room. "Finn why don't you walk with her? She needs a friend." He says.

Finn nods and walks out of the room, trailing not too far behind Violet.

"What the hell? I thought we couldn't leave rehearsal." Kitty states.

Tina looks at Kitty. "This is different."

"How is it different?" Jake asks.

Artie sighs. "It was our first boys vs. girls mash-up competition in the New Directions. Both teams took vitamin D pills to enhance their performance."

Brittany nods. "I still remember that. When Kurt said that those pills were pseudoephedrine tablets, and that Violet was allergic to those. She-She almost died."

Jake, Marley, Kitty, Ryder, Unique, Joe, Sugar, Blaine, Charlie and Sam's eyes grow twice their size.

Tina nods. "If Kurt and Finn hadn't started CPR and injected her with an EpiPen... Violet wouldn't be here today. We thought she'd be okay after our second boys vs. girls competition, but without Kurt here this year... she may not handle it very well."

Will nods with a sigh. "She can choose whether or not to participate. I won't force her to. I made that mistake the first time, and I've felt responsible for her almost death ever since."

Everyone nods and then splits off into their two groups to discuss their mash-up ideas.

Violet sits against the lockers, knees huddled to her chest. She's trying not to have a panic attack.

"Violet? Mind if I sit with you?" Finn asks.

Violet looks up to see Finn before her. "No you can sit with me." She says.

Finn gets seated next to his sister and looks at her with sad eyes. "You don't have to do this assignment y'know. Mr. Shue will understand."

Violet sighs. "I want to do the assignment. But then I think back to that... and I feel so scared and nervous."

Finn puts an arm around her shoulders. "I still think about it too. There's been a couple of times where I wake up crying because of that. We were all so scared of losing you, Violet." He admits softly.

Violet sighs and lays her head on Finn's shoulder. "I don't want the girls to think I'm a coward if I don't participate. But I don't want to feel like I'm going to be sick or faint when we perform. I don't know what to do."

Finn holds her closer. "Why don't you just think it over and make the decision you think is best for you. Okay?"

Violet nods. "Thanks Finn. I appreciate you being here. It makes it easier for me to get through this."

Finn smiles. "I'd be a terrible brother if I didn't."

The next day at glee rehearsal, Violet raises her hand.

"Mr. Shue? May I say something please?" She asks.

Will nods. "Of course Violet."

Violet stands at the front of the room, looking before her teammates. "I don't know if Mr. Shue told most of you guys, but during our first boys vs. girls competition in the New Directions... I almost died. I had a severe allergic reaction to the pseudoephedrine tablets that had been in my system. If it hadn't been for Kurt and Finn... I wouldn't be standing here today." She says.

Everyone except for Brittany, Tina and Artie nod along with what she says.

"I wanted to say that I have made the personal decision not to participate in this week's competition. It's nothing against anyone, but I just don't feel comfortable enough to perform. I hope you guys can respect my decision and not think I'm a coward." Violet finishes.

Will places a hand on her shoulder. "You're not a coward, Violet. You're being an adult — making a decision that's right for you. I'm proud of you for having enough courage to come up here and tell us all your decision."

Marley gives her friend a smile. "Yeah. We don't think you're a coward. We'd all understand if something like that happened to us."

Violet smiles. "Thank you guys for being so understanding about this."

The next day is the day the boys perform their movie mash-up.

"I hope they mash-up "Batdance" with 'Howard the Duck.'" Sugar states.

"Shh." Brittany says.

The boys perform a mash-up of 'Danger Zone/Old Time Rock 'n Roll' from two Tom Cruise cinematic masterpieces:  Top Gun and Risky Business.

Blaine, Charlie, Artie and Joe are dressed as Maverick from Top Gun.

Sam, Jake and Ryder are dressed as Joel Goodsen from Risky Business.

The girls, Will and Finn cheer for their performance.

"Wow! Wow. Okay. That was awesome. Where'd you come up with the inspiration for that?" Finn asks.

"Well, it's our tribute to the early macho cinema of one Mr. Tom Cruise." Artie explains.

"You can't handle the truth." Joe says.

"That's actually Jack Nicholson, not Tom Cruise." Jake says to Joe quietly.

Will smiles. "Girls. You're up." He tells his female students.

Violet hugs Charlie and Blaine. "That is the best thing I have ever seen."

"Wow, come on, you guys. Let's give it up for girls..." Will cheers.

The boys clap for the girls.

While Violet's walking down the hallway, she finds herself thinking about one of her favorite movie songs. It's one of her favorite movies of all time that she watched with Kurt.

She breaks out into Dolly Parton's '9 to 5' from the movie of the very same name.

When she finishes singing in the auditorium, she has a smile on her face.

Just singing that song makes her happy.

"Girls rule, as usual." Sugar says the best day.

"And we should win for these sweet glasses alone." Unique states.

Will smiles. "Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come for the announcement of this year's mash-off winner."

There's whooping from the other students.

"Who of course, will be starring in my senior film project... Hollywood Hootenanny, a tribute to dance on film." Artie interjects.

"And the winner is... everyone." Will announces.

"What?" Kitty asks.

"Why do you always do this?" Tina demands.

"That's insane." Ryder claims.

"This is a sham." Sugar states.

"In reality, what you're saying is, we're all losers. Why did we bother having a competition in the first place?" Blaine asks.

Artie wheels to the front of the room. "Calm down, y'all. Calm down. After exhaustive storyboarding and pre-production, I realized that I needed a lot of talented bodies to make this film great. So, choosing one winner was just simply impossible."

"That is exactly right." Will says.

Violet smiles at her teammates. "You guys should be proud of yourselves."
