Chapter 74

McCallan led the attack on the Chitauri behemoths, Rhodey and Stark flying to either side of him and Thor bringing up the rear. The ETCD pilot wasted no time and fired two missiles straight down the throat of one of the creatures, flying up over the creature as it roared in pain.

Stark quickly realized the behemoths weren't going to be as much as a threat this time. With the four of them, the creatures would be eliminated in a short space of time.

"Stark, Colonel Rhodes, bank to your outside," McCallan ordered. "Thor, take the one up top."

"We got this," Stark said. "Don't we, McCallan?"

"Yes, sir."

Gibbs rolled over onto his stomach as Sharpe increased gravitational pull on Barton and forced him flat. Rogers was already standing up as the Chitauri began to come closer as the covering fire ceased.

"I have waited too long for this," Sharpe fumed. "I will not lose!"

In answer, McGhee shifted his gun, which was resting flat against the ground, and shot Sharpe in the foot.

Sharpe cursed and yelled, hopping around on one foot as McGhee fired again, into the other foot. Rogers launched himself at the Walker as he floated slightly up into the air to prevent his falling over. As Sharpe turned his attention to the captain, Gibbs lunged from behind.

Barton and McGhee pushed themselves up as the gravitational pull on them decreased. As Sharpe flew up into the air, trying to evade the former Marine, Gibbs held on and reached forward, wrapping his hand around the scientist's chin.

"You won't win," Sharpe howled. "You won't!"

Gibbs didn't answer, just made sure his hands were in position and jerked sideways.

Sharpe's howling stopped as his neck snapped.

Gibbs released Sharpe's head as the scientist went limp and stopped ascending. Then Drift's voice spoke in Gibbs' ear: "Agent Sniper has escaped us. She's heading in your direction, Agent Gibbs."

There was no time to process that information. Avoiding ending up a splatter on the ground below was his first priority.

"Stark!" Gibbs commed.

"Agent Gibbs, is that you I see falling through the sky?"

"As a matter of fact, it is."

"On my way."

Gibbs could hear Iron Man's thrusters approaching as he fell, arms and legs spread out.

Agent Sniper let go of the behemoth as it swooped closer to the ground in an attempt to escape the jet's strafing runs. Folding into a roll as she hit the ground, she came out of it running, sniper rifle in her hands.

Sharpe was failing. Leopard was losing ground and confidence. The Chitauri were practically leaderless and their squadrons would fall apart and go berserk as soon as Sharpe fell. The war was not going well for them.

But she was a contractor with a mission to eliminate NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, and she couldn't fail.

Not without consequences.

Sharpe's body hit the ground hard and McGhee peered at it from behind the car. It looked dead. His neck was twisted at an awkward angle that hinted it had been broken.

"I think he's dead," Barton voiced.

"Cover me," McGhee ordered, and he ran, hunched over, to Sharpe's side. He placed his fingers on the scientist's neck, feeling for a pulse.

The scientist's skin twitched.

Before the agent could react, Sharpe rolled over and thrust the hidden dagger in his hand towards McGhee. McGhee fell back, as Sharpe pushed himself up and tried again.

"Shoot him!" McGhee yelped, scrambling backward. He unloaded his clip into the scientist's chest as he shoved himself backward but he kept coming, swiping at the agent with his knife.

Barton unleashed an arrow. The projectile landed in Sharpe's eye, going through his skull, but it barely even slowed him down.

Rogers hurled his shield, hitting the scientist in the skull and slamming his already lopsided head onto one shoulder. But it was like nothing had happened; Sharpe was still coming.

McGhee was, quite understandably, freaking out.

"Abby!" he yelped. "A little help here!"

"I'm running analysis!" Abby responded. "Ducky! Jimmy! Any options while I finish scanning?"

"How about run?" Jimmy suggested.

"Yeah, why didn't I think of that!" McGhee retorted, managing to get to his feet and keep moving backwards from the undead scientist, never letting his eyes leave it.

"It's what I would do!" Jimmy shot back.

"May I suggest you unleash Doctor Banner on him?" Ducky said.

"Hulk!" Barton yelled. "Come smash this thing!"

Hulk looked up from the scattering Chitauri and bounded over towards them. He slammed his fist down on Sharpe and smashed him flat against the ground. As soon as he stepped back, however, the scientist started crawling forward again, dagger still in his hand. Outraged, Hulk roared and smashed him again before jumping back to fend off the approaching Chitauri.

"Abby!" McGhee howled as Sharpe, once again, started towards him. He heard thrusters and glanced up to see Iron Man descending towards them, gripping Gibbs by the vest.

"One moment, McGhee! Almost got it!"

Chitauri were flocking onto the battlefield from all directions, seemingly drawn to their now undead leader. The Avengers didn't have long before they would be overwhelmed and unable to deal with Sharpe.

"It's a reflex!" Abby commed. "Like that of a dead snake."

"How do we stop it?" Rogers demanded.

"Easy," Stark said as he landed and released Gibbs. Lifting the palm of his hand, he fired a beam into Sharpe's chest as the scientist straightened and blasted him back onto his back. "Zombie stopped."

Sharpe rolled over.

"I'm really tired of this guy," Barton commented wearily. "How do we kill him, Abby?"

"I'm not sure yet," Abby said frantically. "I'm not sure if you can."

"What controls the reflex?" Gibbs asked as Sharpe stumbled into a sort of upright position and headed for McGhee again, who jolted away. "Take a deep breath, Abs, and answer me."

Everyone heard the breath Abby took over the earpieces. When she spoke again, she sounded calmer. "For him, the control is located behind his heart, attached to his spinal cord. It's why he can still move even though his neck is broken – it's a spinal reflex. More sophisticated than any I've seen in a human before."

"So take out his spine?" Rogers checked.

"Just the area behind his heart," Abby confirmed.

"McGhee," Gibbs said. "Stay in front of him. Barton, cover him. Hulk, keep those Chitauri back. Rogers, Stark, on me." Gibbs reached into his pocket and withdrew his pocketknife, flicking it open.

Stark shot Sharpe in the back and sent the scientist falling onto his face. Rogers leapt forward and landed on his back, slamming his shield down on his head to pin him. As Gibbs moved forward, knife ready, Rogers shifted to expose the designated area on the scientist's back.

Gibbs tore at the armor covering Sharpe's back and Stark, kneeling on the other side of the scientist, gestured for the agent to sit back and, when Gibbs complied, used a laser to cut through the armor. Gibbs ripped it back and shoved his knife into Sharpe's back.

The blade dug into the flesh beside the spinal cord, creating a jagged, bloody hole. Gibbs pulled his knife out and shoved himself away from the struggling body as Stark reached into the hole, curled his fingers around the spine, and yanked.

The scientist abruptly stopped moving.

Rogers fell backwards, sighing in relief, as McGhee and Barton kept their weapons trained on Sharpe's body.

"Reflex deactivated," Abby commed, the relief evident in her voice. "He's dead."
