Chapter Three

Yoongi has the amount of time it takes him to get ready for work timed down to the minute.

He wants to be able to sleep for as long as possible so he made sure to have his routine timed perfectly, with hardly any room for differentiation.

His alarm goes off at seven-fifty, he gets up and takes approximately thirty-eight minutes to be exact for the whole process of showering, dressing, eating breakfast then walking to the bus stop at the top of their street.

Then another twenty-four after that for his bus ride, which picks him up at the closest stop to his apartment at eight forty-three. Usually.

He then takes the bus directly to the stop just around the corner from his work; Retro Genius Vinyls.

He's usually the first one there when he works so he is the one to make sure all is where it should be to open the doors at ten.

This is how his mornings go four days per week; Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. This is the routine that works best for him.

Lounging around for a full work day prior to going back to work? That's not part of his routine and he blames that wrongfully used sick day as the cause of his unpunctuality today.

Also to blame is the human heater that is Jungkook for making him much too comfortable last night, causing him to sleep deeper than usual.

Because today he slept too long, meaning he started getting ready late, which in turn threw him way off schedule for the bus.

He had to call his boss after seeing the bus, driving passed just as he stepped out of their building to tell him he had missed it and would be in as soon as he could but likely not before they'd opened.

Just as he was hanging up the phone with the man, who thankfully is a very understanding man that asked no questions or gave any complaints about Yoongi being late after taking a day off previously, instead only offering to make the drive to his apartment to pick him up if needed.

Yoongi didn't want to put the man out by allowing him to come across town, leaving the shop with no one to open the doors on time, just because of his bad time management. So he assured him that he had another ride lined up and would be okay.

Unfortunately, this wasn't really true.

Jungkook has a car but he too has a routine he follows pretty religiously and his includes going to the gym first thing in the morning. So he isn't at the apartment currently.

Yoongi tried to give him a call, several actually, hoping he'd be near the device, but there was no answer.

He did leave a frantic sounding voicemail for the younger, telling him what had happened and asking him to call him back as soon as he could before hanging up.

There isn't really anyone else on his list of acquaintances he feels comfortable calling to ask for a ride, but he needs to come up with someone he won't feel quite so guilty calling on a Saturday because he still has a good half an hour until the next bus will be coming.

After that, the commute would likely be about twice as long as it would have been if he'd caught his usual bus because as the day gets later traffic gets heavier.

Just as he is scrolling through his contacts, trying to narrow down who to try next, someone calls out for him from behind.

"Good morning!" He he hears called out cheerfully.

Yoongi stares at the sound and turns around to see Hoseok walking towards him.

Yoongi swears he sees him eyeing clothes– him wearing his indigo colored skinny jeans, scoop neck white t-shirt that shows just a bit of his collarbones and his favorite converse– but he thinks he must be seeing things.

Hokeok though, he's absolutely checking the older man out.

He thinks you'd have to be blind to see Yoongi in any sort of outfit– whether it be his loungewear from the night before or the clothes he is in now– and not find the man stunning.

"Don't you look nice," Hoseok smiles.

"Good morning... And thank you." Yoongi greets, looking at Hoseok just long enough to flash a small smile before shifting his weight on his feet as he continues looking through his phone.

"Miss your bus?" Hoseok suddenly asks.

Yoongi snaps his head in his neighbor's direction, eyes wide in wonder.

"How did you guess that?"

Hoseok lets out an amused laugh, "I heard you leaving a voicemail for Jungkook a minute ago. Not that I was purposely eavesdropping or anything!" He adds quickly before going on to explain, "I just happened to have been walking out of the building on my way to go run some errands. Now I have come over here to offer you a ride to wherever it is you were headed. Work, it sounded like?"

Yoongi feels the muscles in his neck and shoulders relax at the mention of a ride, but he still shakes his head in denial. "That's a lot to ask someone I just met. My work is a little far from here."

He doesn't want to put Hoseok out like that. His work is on the outskirts of the city, basically taking you past everything.

There's no way wherever Hoseok was planning to go isn't going to require him to backtrack quite a bit after dropping Yoongi off to get there.

"I want to," Hoseok assures, warm smile still in place.

When Yoongi continues to look at him with hesitation, Hoseok lets out a soft sigh.

"As I said, I am going out anyway. I'm sure giving you a ride isn't a problem. Just let me do my good deed for the day. Please."

Yoongi purses his lips, only pausing for a second more before nodding.

"Great! Right this way." Hoseok beams before turning to his right to begin walking to the parking structure for their building.

They begin their walk down the sidewalk, Yoongi fiddling with his fingers as he tries to think of what to say before an awkward silence falls between them.

"How is the painting coming along?" He settles on asking.

"Oh," Hoseok chuckles. "That is one of the errands I have to run. I need more paint. I was planning on painting the bathroom white, but I underestimated just how bright the yellow is. I thought one coat would be okay, but now it just looks like a lighter shade of yellow. I'm hoping another coat or two will cover it up fully."

Hoseok nods slowly, eyeing Yoongi as he walks beside him. "That would be fun, but I got the impression last night that he isn't very fond of me."

"Oh no, he is. When we were on our way to your door he was telling me all about how nice you are," Yoongi smiles shyly.

Hoseok purses his lips as they begin to the climb the flight of cement stairs that lead up to the level where he is parked. "How did you two meet? If you don't mind me asking."

"I had posted an ad on campus two years ago that I was looking for a roommate. We are both students at the University and he answered the ad. He was a freshman at the time, quiet and seemed like a good match for me as he appeared to be about as outgoing as I was." Yoongi smiled to himself as he thought about that day he'd opened his apartment door to see a skinny, wide eyed eighteen year Jungkook who honestly looked terrified of the world.

He was visibly shaking with how anxious he was and it pulled at Yoongi's Heart strings. He instantly had the urge to protect him.

From what he wasn't sure– at the time Jungkook was about Yoongi's size weight-wise but taller by a few inches. Nevertheless, Yoongi still felt the need to look out for him.

Of course, Yoongi wasn't forward or confident enough to know how to outwardly express that he liked the kid– he wasn't even sure if the feeling was mutual– so he kept to himself.

At that time in his life, when he wasn't sure what to say, he opted to just not say anything.

He wasn't able to find the words to tell Jungkook he wasn't a scary, mean upperclassman who didn't like him around. He actually did like him. And rather quickly at that.

He thought he had gotten lucky that Jungkook– someone who was quiet and didn't seem to be the partying, unorganized man child– found his flyer.

He'd expected to have to settle for someone who he may not get along with. Instead, he got Jungkook; picture perfect roommate turned best friend.

"Are you two, like... together?" Hoseok asks hesitantly.

Yoongi stares at him like the man's sprouted two heads before bursting into a fit of light laughter.

What a ridiculous question! Jungkook is so far out of his league that it's comical to think he'd be interested in Yoongi that way.

He's charming and confident. Headstrong and sexy– like so sexy– and Yoongi knows there is no way in hell he could ever be Jungkook's type.

Jungkook likes guys who-

Guys that look like-

Actually, now that he thinks about it, he isn't sure what Jungkook's type is. The younger isn't one to bring people home or have one night stands usually.

He knows that Jungkook has had them, but only because he's seen the younger come home after a night out in the same clothes he wore the night before.

I guess he's never asked to confirm that's why he'd been wearing the same clothes Yoongi'd seen him in the night before. It wasn't really any of his business.

Hook ups just aren't something they talked about. Same with dates.

"We're just friends," Yoongi smiles. "Best friends."

Hoseok gives him a look that says he believes none of what Yoongi is saying, because he doesn't.

Hoseok observed the two for a grand total of ninety seconds as they stood at his door and he saw quite clearly how protective Jungkook is of Yoongi.

Protective like a boyfriend would be, which is why Hoseok figured the two were together.

Before he gets a chance to ask any further questions about he and Jungkook's friendship, mostly to see if Yoongi is really as blind to Jungkook's blatant adoration of him as he seems to be, Yoongi's phone begins to ring.

Hoseok watches as a happy, relieved looking smile makes its way onto Yoongi's face before he looks at Hoseok.

"It's Jungkook."

Hoseok nods as he says, "My car's just there. The red one at the end."

As Yoongi answers the phone, him quickly being cut off mid Hello before he goes quiet as they continue towards the vehicle.

He smiles when he hears Yoongi say, "It's okay, Kookie. You don't need to rush. Hoseok offered to give me a ride." Yoongi then throws a quick glance at Hoseok with a smile as they walk up to Hoseok's car.

"No- Kookie, it's really okay. Don't apologize. I know how early you wake up to go to the gym. I'm glad you didn't wake me when you woke up to get ready to leave."

He then purses his lips as Hoseok unlocks the door from the driver's side so he can climb into the car.

"I promise it's okay," he sighs. "The rec center is easily a forty minute drive to the apartment. By the time you got here I would have already been on the bus if I'd been forced to wait for the next one."

Yoongi gets situated in the passenger seat before pressing his phone to his cheek to use both hands to get the seatbelt secured.

"If picking me up would make you feel better, that'd be fine," Yoongi smiles before a fairly long pause. "The usual time, yes. Okay. Thank you Kookie and I'll see you later."

He then hangs up the phone before turning to Hoseok who has started driving out of the parking structure to get onto the main road.

"Sorry about that," Yoongi apologizes.

"Don't be," Hoseok smiles over at him. "Now then, where am I going?"

"I work at a record store called Retro Genius Vinyls. It's over on-"

"You work there?" Hoseok scoffs in surprise.

Yoongi is a little offended by the reaction and is about to let Hoseok know as much but Hoseok sees the annoyance on his face and speaks up quickly to clarify.

"I just mean I know that place. You work with Namjoon, yeah?" He raises a brow as he starts on his way to their destination.

"Yeah! He and I are co-managers. You know him?"

"I do. He is a classmate and very good friend of mine. I've gone in the store before. I'm surprised I haven't seen you."

"O-oh well depending on the day I might have been in the back room going through new shipments. Or taking inventory. Other times I'm more of a wallflower. You probably didn't notice me."

"Trust me, Yoongi," Hoseok says, stopping at a red light before turning to him. "I would have noticed and remembered you."

Yoongi's eyes widen at the same time he feels himself blushing.

He isn't able to say anything besides "O-Oh... okay then" before he's facing forward again and sinks down in the seat.

Hoseok giggles at the reaction before turning up the radio a little as they continue on their way.

The song playing is one Yoongi has heard Jungkook playing before. One of his guilty pleasure songs by Red Velvet.

He begins to think back on his call, recalling how badly Jungkook felt for not being there to help him.

He doesn't know what he would ever do without his best friend. He's truly the best thing that's ever happened to him.
