Chapter Six
"Holy shit," Jungkook gasps quietly, staring wide eyed at the cotton candy haired man sitting at the table by the window.
He's not looking towards where Jungkook is stood, instead appearing to be fixated on the overcast sky outside. But despite not seeing him head on, Jungkook recognizes him.
"Jiminie?" He calls, still mildly disbelieving that this is actually happening. That this is actually Jimin. His Jimin.
The hand that had been fisted under his chin, being used to prop his head up as he silently deduced if today would actually be the day the rain clouds hovering above the city would finally release the water they'd been hoarding, slipped out from under his chin at the jump scare.
He darts his eyes around, startled, but the feeling subsides quickly when he sees that all too familiar and dearly missed bunny smile all but running towards his table.
"Jungkookie!" He beams excitedly.
No sooner does he swing his legs out from under the table, planting his feet on the ground as he stands up, does Jungkook scoop him into his arms in a bone crushing hug.
Jimin lets it happen, wrapping his arms tightly around his neck giggling while Jungkook swings him around in a small circle.
To an onlooker they must look as though they're acting out a scene from some terribly cheesy rom-com, but they couldn't care less.
When he begins to get a bit dizzy, Jungkook lowers a giggling Jimin back to the ground.
He places his hands on Jimin's shoulders as he stares at the man, looking over his features with glistening eyes and a smile that could rival even the brightest star.
"Jiminie, it's been too long," Jungkook beams happily.
"I'd say so! When was the last time we were together. My seventh grade graduation, right?" Jimin smiles, happy tears glistening in his eyes. "I missed you."
He quickly reaches his hand up to wipe the tears away that have yet to fall as Jungkook does the same with his own tears.
"Did you order yet?" Jungkook questions with a sniffle.
"No, not yet. To be honest I've been a little jittery. I didn't think I could keep anything down and I've been much too anxious as it is to think that any sort of caffeine would be good for me to drink."
"Anxious? So you knew it was me Jin-hyung told you about?" Jungkook quirks a brow as he pulls the chair out across from where Jimin was sitting to take a seat.
"I had hoped, but I was skeptical of course." Jimin smiles. "I mean, how the hell could that be possible? To have not seen my childhood best friend in years to then have a guy I just started working with know you. Not only that, but for him to go so far as to set us up on a date."
Jimin scrunches his nose at the last word while Jungkook giggles at the expression. Still the same Jimin, so cute and squishy.
"I hope this doesn't break your heart, but you're like a little brother to me. And I'm not really interested in dating my little brother."
Jungkook grasps his chest dramatically with a pained look on his face. "Damn, I was really hoping to spend this time together professing our love and planning our future together."
Jimin giggles at the younger's antics as Jungkook breaks out of character and laughs with him.
"Seriously though, hyung was right," Jungkook comments with a teasing smile. "You are hot."
Jimin blushes as he runs a hand through his hair reflexively. "Shut up."
"It's true, you're hot! Where did your little chubby cheeks go?" Jungkook giggles, scrunching his nose as he does so.
"I could say the same to you! If it wasn't for that same cheesy smile of yours I would have no idea you were the same quiet boy I had to pester into being my friend." Jimin laughs along with Jungkook, gazing around his face before leaning over to the side to check out the rest of him.
"You're the hot one," he compliments with a suggestive wiggle of his brows as he sits up again.
"Alright," Jungkook says, cheeks blushing lightly as he picks up the menu that's been set on the table between them. "Let's agree that puberty did us both some good."
"A lot of good," Jimin smiles, wrinkling his nose cutely.
As Jungkook begins to feel embarrassed at all the compliments, he ducks his head, focusing his attention on his menu on the table in front of him.
"Have your nerves calmed down enough for us to order yet, because I am starving."
Jimin nods his head enthusiastically, "I saw a waitress pass by the table not too long before you got here with some strawberry crepes that looked divine. I think that's what I'll get."
"Still have an affinity for sweets I see," Jungkook says with a crooked smile.
"Don't you judge me, Jeon! And don't deny that Nutella crepes don't just make your mouth water."
Jungkook narrows his eyes at Jimin with mock anger. "No one's called me Jeon in a very long time."
"Your friends have been really missing out on the way your little mouth pouts out when you get called that then!" Jimin laughs. "I'll have to make sure to let Jin know to tell all of them to start doing it immediately."
"All of them," Jungkook rolls his eyes. "All two of them."
"You have two friends?! Jungkookie, don't tell me you're still a shy bunny who doesn't talk to anyone. It's okay to talk to strangers sometimes you know."
"It's not that I'm so shy anymore, I just don't go out of my way to gather crowds of people around me. I have Jin-Hyung and Yoongi-Hyung and-"
"And me," Jimin points out.
"Yes, and you. You're the best friends I could ask for. I'm not worried about the quantity of the friends I have. I just want them to be quality people that make me happy. Yoongi and Jin, and you, make me happy."
"So I've heard," Jimin smiles knowingly, which Jungkook immediately picks up on and calls him out.
"What does that mean?" He tilts his head.
When Jimin does nothing but cross his arms over his chest and lean back in his seat, Jungkook starts to put the pieces together.
"What did Jin say about him?" He asks suspiciously with narrowed eyes.
Jimin throws his head back as he lets out a series of laughs. The sound makes Jungkook want to laugh along with him, but he is far more focused and interested in exactly what Jin has said to Jimin than he is about laughing along with his friend.
"You should see your face! You really are so protective of your little hyung, aren't you." Jimin grins, eyes disappearing into their endearing crescent shape.
Jungkook opens his mouth to repeat his question when the waitress walks up to the table to take their order.
After ordering the aforementioned crepes along with some chocolate milk for both of them, Jungkook levels his stare back at Jimin.
"Alright, spill it," Jungkook says, pursing his lips tightly.
"Well, I was advised to not bring up or allow you to talk for too long about Yoongi. He said you'd probably spend all afternoon talking about him, which of course means it was one of the first things I wanted to bring up. His advice made me think Yoongi may be a little more than a friend... So," he smiles crookedly as he places his elbows on the table, propping his chin on his fisted hand again. "Tell me about him."
Jungkook lets out a sigh, feeling his face flush as he tries to think of where to even begin telling Jimin about Yoongi.
Observing Jungkook getting flustered at just the mention of Yoongi made Jimin even more giddy with anticipation.
"Oh my God, you're blushing!" He bounces in his seat. "Tell me about him! Tell me, tell me, tell me!"
"Okay, calm down," Jungkook whisper yells before smiling apologetically to the older couple glaring at them from a few tables over.
"He's my best friend and my roommate," he answers, turning back towards Jimin.
"And your love!" Jimin beams. "Okay, keep going. How did you meet him and how did he become your roommate?"
As Jungkook begins to tell Jimin the story of him moving to the city to go to school, how he was supposed to be moving into a private dorm room where he would live by himself but the lease fell through so he had to quickly find somewhere else to live.
How he just so happened to have been walking out of the musical arts building and saw Yoongi's ad up on the bulletin board that he was looking for a roommate ASAP.
He told him how he was so incredibly nervous to move in with a stranger but his desperation for a place to stay before the first day of school trumped all other emotions holding him back.
That when he got to the apartment and Yoongi opened the door it was like time slowed down and in the most cliché way one could imagine, Jungkook was rendered speechless.
Jungkook explained that Yoongi is everything that he's ever wanted and more, but the older seems to be clueless to Jungkook's feelings towards him.
That he sometimes wishes for more, but that it's probably for the best that they stay just friends.
When Jimin heard that last part, he shook his head aggressively before reaching across the table to put his hand on Jungkook's.
"I know exactly what you're going through and I have to tell you, it's a miserable way to live. The way your face lights up when you talk about him, how you describe him in such detail it's as if he were sitting right in front of you, you can't keep doing this. Trust me. Telling your friend you're in love with them– that you've been in love with them– is terrifying. But the relief you feel after confessing almost makes it worth it."
"Almost?" Jungkook repeats.
"I'm not saying it isn't fucking terrifying."
"Have you confessed to someone?"
When Jimin nods with a smile, Jungkook sits up a little taller in his seat with a twinkle in his eye.
"Did it work for you? Did they feel the same?"
Jimin's smile slowly falters as his eyes tear up. He begins to rub his thumb across the back of Jungkook's hand.
He's quiet for a few seconds, keeping his eyes on Jungkook's before digging his teeth into his bottom lip as he shakes his head.
The twinkle Jungkook's eyes had moments ago quickly fades as he feels his own eyes begin to tear up.
"Then what's the point..." He says quietly– sadly– as a lump builds in his throat. "I'd rather keep this to myself than lose him." He shuts his eyes as he takes a shaky breath.
"It's terrifying, putting yourself out there like that– baring your soul," Jimin sniffles, "But, at least then you won't have to carry around this weight anymore. This secret."
With his eyes still closed, tears begin to spill from Jungkook's eyes.
Seeing this, Jimin stands up from his seat, walking around the table to crouch beside Jungkook as he hugs the younger tightly.
"How long have you felt like this?" He whispers against Jungkook's shoulder.
"Basically since I first moved in with him."
"Two years?" Jimin asks quietly, pulling away to look at him.
Jungkook nods as he reaches up to wipe his tears, "I know. It's pathetic."
Jimin shakes his head as he cups Jungkook's cheek with his hand as the other rests on his knee, "Actually, I have you beat."
Jungkook's eyes widen. "How long?"
"Almost four."
"Oh my God," he gasps quietly, eyes full of pity.
"I know," Jimin sighs. "I'm getting over it though. Moving on from it. That's why I've been going out more, hence me agreeing to this very sexy date we're having," he says with a chuckle, attempting to lighten the mood, which seems to work as Jungkook chuckles along with him.
"Very romantic to be sitting in a café in the middle of the afternoon talking about our unrequited love stories."
"Hey, you don't know if it's unrequited," Jimin interjects quickly.
"Jimin, I have honestly been so forward with him. I call him baby, take every opportunity I can to hold his hand or hug him, to cuddle him. I've done everything I can-"
"No, you haven't," Jimin says a little more sternly. "You haven't said it."
"I don't want to have to say it..."
"You might not have a choice. Well, of course you have a choice. What I mean is that if he's been clueless to your hinting for this long, confessing might be the only play you have left."
"I don't know... you don't know Yoongi like I do. He's so caring. What if I tell him how I feel and he just says he feels the same out of pity." Jungkook pouts. "I can totally see him doing that to spare my feelings."
Jimin purses his lips as he thinks.
He opens his mouth with a click of his tongue. "What if I talked to him."
"You'd tell him for me?!"
"We're adults, Jungkook. This isn't like in elementary school when I went up to Yugeom and said, 'My friend likes you, do you like him?'" He giggles. "No, this needs to come from you. I just meant I wanted to meet him. Talk to him and ask him about you and see if he reacts to the mention of your name like you did at the mention of his. If you aren't wanting to say it out loud to him yet that is."
"Okay," Jungkook nods slowly. "Why don't you come over tonight? We can watch a movie or something."
"Actually, I have a dance class tonight. How about tomorrow?"
"I can't. Tomorrow is Yoongi's birthday. He was really distraught yesterday because this is his first birthday since his last break-up. I plan on spending the day with him, making sure it's the best day ever."
Jimin makes an obnoxiously dramatic "Awe" and is about to launch into gushing over his lovesick friend more but the waitress comes around the corner with their food so he quickly stands up to get back into his seat.
After their plates have been set in front of them and they thank the waitress Jimin directs his full attention back to Jungkook.
"Okay, your turn to spill. What are your plans?" Jimin says with an excited smile before looking down at his plate to begin cutting into his crepes.
Jungkook does the same as he begins to fill Jimin in on his plans for the next day.
After forty minutes of listening intently to Jungkook go over every detail between his large bites of food, Jimin's frequent interruptions with his Awes and exclamations of Cute! My Dongsaeng is all grown up and How could Yoongi not be in love with you?!
Jugkook ended by telling Jimin about the grand finale; the big gift.
Jungkook had been going back and forth for weeks when the thought initially came to mind.
He wasn't one hundred percent sure Yoongi would actually like it or if he'll think it's too much and get overwhelmed by it.
But the more he'd danced around the topic with Yoongi the more convinced Jungkook was that he'll love it.
"You know what would go amazingly well with that present?" Jimin grins with an eye brow wiggle before standing up from his seat. "A confession."
Jungkook looks at him confusedly, "Why are you standing up? Are you ready to go?"
Jimin stretches his arms above his head with a nod, "Yeah. I have dance, remember?"
"Right," Jungkook nods back.
He then turns around in his seat, looking to wave over the waitress to let her know they were ready for the ticket.
"I paid before you got here."
Jungkook snaps his head back in his friend's direction.
"Huh? How did you do that? You didn't know what we'd order."
"I just gave her cash, an amount I knew would be an over payment no matter what we ordered and told her to keep the change. We're good."
"Jiminie, you didn't have to do that. I'm good for it. I have money." Jungkook says, standing up from his seat as well.
Jimin waves his hand in the air dismissively. "If I remember right, you paid for our dinner the last time I saw you. So really, it was only fair."
"That was eight years ago and we went to a baskin robins for ice cream. That doesn't count," Jungkook scoffs teasingly.
"A debt is a debt," Jimin shrugs.
"What if a different Jeon Jungkook would have showed up? What then?"
Jimin playfully shoves Jungkook shoulder as they push open the doors to leave the cafe.
"Be thankful for the free meal will you?! God."
Jungkook giggles at Jimin's whining. "Yes, thank you. And next time will be my turn."
"Deal!" Jimin giggles.
After saying their goodbyes and exchanging numbers, the two friends parted ways, heading back to their respective homes, Jimin to get ready for his class and Jungkook to wait for it to be time to pick up Yoongi.
He figures while he's on this side of town– closer to Yoongi's work than he would be if he went back home– he'd go to a few stores to shop for things he can get to add to the things he has planned tomorrow.
Things to make the day even more perfect.
