EPILOGUE: Happy Endings
After what happened with Thomas Ivo Tech had once again found itself in shambles. Considering all the negative press that they already had from her father, it was irritating to say the least that now there was so much negative press around the company again. Gemma had only been back for three days and yet it felt like she hadn't even made a dent in the long list of things she needed to get done.
Considering her lab and office were on different floor, Gemma had some of things in her lab moved into her office. Unfortunately, she still wasn't able to move back and forth as easily yet. Attempting it would only cause her to get tired more quickly.
Using her finger Gemma wrote out the calculations she had been going over all morning on the screen. She heard the door to her office open and was surprised to find Jaime stepping inside. It wasn't the fact that he was there that shocked her, it was the realization that it was already noon. Time had slipped by so quickly that it was almost frustrating.
"Lunch time." He said as he placed the bag of food on her desk before walking across the room to her. Gemma had gone back to going over the calculations hoping that she could squeeze in one last attempt before sitting down and eating lunch. Before she could even attempt to focus Jaime
Gemma expected it to be a quick greeting kiss, but was surprised when he pulled her closer and deepened it. Normally Jaime didn't tend to do anything this bold while she was a work. He was kissing her in a way that was leaving her entirely breathless, it made it almost a little too easy to forget that she was at work.
"What are you doing?" She questioned as she pulled away slightly, a little suspicious about what he was doing. Not that she minded the kiss, she had seen him in the morning while getting ready but found that she had missed him. It was a little annoying how easy it was for her so slip back into a place where she almost felt dependent on Jaime. Like her day wasn't entirely complete unless she got to see him.
"Trying to distract you." He replied as he placed another quick kiss on her lips. "Is it working?"
Gemma's eyes wondered back to the board as she considered his words. "No."
Jaime looked a little annoyed by her words but still knew that she was teasing him. "I still think you should be taking it slow."
Attempting to make a point Gemma walked away from him and took a seat in one of the chairs in front of her desk. Opening the Big Belly Burger she pulled out the bag of fries and placed a couple in her mouth. The last thing that she wanted was for Jaime to accuse her of starving herself too. "This is me taking it slow."
"Slower then."
"I feel great." Gemma said with a shrug and it was the truth. She really did feel great now that she was back at work, admittedly she had been hungry but Jaime had brought food so that issue was already resolved.
Jaime looked at her skeptically, like he didn't believe a word she was saying. He worried more than he had to considering that he had his own things to worry about at work. "You feel great now but when you get home later you're going to be exhausted again."
That much she knew he was right about. The last three days she had pretty much gone straight to bed the moment she got home. It wasn't ideal but her body was still recovering and she knew it would be a couple more months until she was back to normal.
"Have you gotten another acceptance letter?" She questioned eager to change the subject. Jaime had already gotten acceptance letters from Palmera University and Gotham State University. Although he had done his undergrad in GSU Gemma wasn't sure why he would want to return, overall it felt like Palmera was the more convenient choice for him.
Jaime smiled and Gemma knew that he had come with good news. He was still waiting to hear back from Metropolis University and National City University. Really they were all great choices. Gemma had gone to both MU and NCU, whatever Jaime picked it would suit him well. "Actually..."
Before Jaime could continue the door to the office opened and a woman from the cleaning staff walked in. Only she didn't recognize her as part of the cleaning staff, even though she was wearing the grey uniform.
Gemma immediately stood up recognizing her despite the disguise she had on. "How did you get in here?"
"I have my ways." She said with a smile as she stepped farther into the office so casually Gemma almost wanted to second guess what was so weird about her being in the office to begin with. "You've been ignoring my calls."
Irene Miranda had been calling her for at least a week. She had ignored every call both cause she simply didn't have time to even consider meeting with her and because she knew that the reporter was going bring up Blue Beetle again. Last time they spoke Irene Miranda had been very direct about the fact that she knew Jaime was Blue Beetle. Now she was her at the same time Jaime was and Gemma knew that it couldn't possibly be a coincidence.
"I'm aware." Gemma said wondering if she should even call security. It wasn't like Irene Miranda was some kind of threat even if her presence was unwanted. Especially not with the slightest baby bump that was starting to peak through the uniform she was wearing.
Although it had only been a month since the interview, Gemma was sure that Irene hadn't noticed the bump before. She couldn't be anymore than three months pregnant, but one thing was for sure she was absolutely glowing.
Irene took the empty seat across from Jaime and looked down at the food that was scattered across the desk. "Can I?"
"Sure." Jaime said as he slide the fries across the desk so that they were within her reach. He looked a little nervous as he reached for his soda and began to drink it quickly.
"The twins were an accident. But this second time around I have no excuse." The reporter said so casually as if they were friends catching up over dinner. It was unclear whether this was all some act to get them to trust her or if she was naturally just an open person. Maybe it was a little bit of both. "Make sure you really think it through when you two have kids."
Jaime immediately began to choke on his drink, it would have almost been comical if Irene words also didn't cause Gemma to panic a little. Reaching out Gemma placed a hand on his shoulder both to offer some kind of comfort but also urge him to get himself together.
"Not there yet huh?" She continued clearly enjoying the reaction that she got out of Jaime as she reached out for some more fries. Luckily Jaime had stopped coughing but he continued to look incredibly uncomfortable. "Good wait a couple of years you're too young."
"You haven't said why you're here." Gemma said firmly wanting desperately to change the subject and also still a little annoyed about what was happening.
Either Irene didn't notice Gemma's tone or she didn't care, because all she did was smile. "Straight to the point. I like you."
Sighing Irene Miranda stood up look between Gemma and Jaime thoughtfully. Like she wasn't fully convinced about what she was going to say, but realizing that it was a little to late considering she was already standing in front of them.
"Jaime it's very nice to finally meet you." Irene began her tone becoming serious and losing any of the playfulness it had before. As friendly as she was before it was clear that this was work for her, and she took her work very seriously. "The Justice League had been keeping a close eye on you and your work as Blue Beetle. They are very impressed. Currently they are putting together another team to help with missions that they are unable to get to."
Jaime had straightened up clearly intrigues by what she was saying. How could he not be? If the Justice League was interested in him that was undeniably a big deal.
"You mean the missions that are too small for the Justice League?" Gemma questioned seeing where this was headed. Unfortunately, no matter how active the Justice League it was impossible for them to be everywhere at once. When the Justice League first stepped into the spotlight there were only seven members and it had grown rapidly since.
"No job is too small for the Justice League." Irene said firmly, in a way that made it clear that it was the truth. If The Flash was asked to save a kitten from a tree he would do it. They were heroes after all, and the Justice League was always there to help. It was almost difficult remembering what the world was like before them. "But that doesn't mean they don't need a little extra assistance. That's where this new team would come in."
"So like a junior Justice League?" Jaime asked trying his best not to practically jump out of his seat in excitement.
"Nightwing hasn't come up with a name yet."
Jaime's eyes widened slightly at the mention of Blüdhaven's hero. "Nightwing?"
"That's right." She said with a smile that quickly faded. Unconsciously she placed her hand on her stomach as she took a seat again. "The truth is some of the members of the League are getting ready to do a mission... not on Earth. Extra help will very much be needed during that time. What do you say Jaime?"
A long silence followed as Jaime as Irene Miranda looked at Jaime expectantly, through there was no kind of pressure in her offer. Gemma was a little surprised that Jaime wasn't jumping at the opportunity, he looked up to the Justice League and even if he technically wasn't being offered a position on that team it was still an offer to work along side them.
But there were so many things that he had to consider first. Beginning with the fact that he was just about to return to school.
"I would have to think it over." Jaime finally said, his response not earning much of a reaction from Irene. Like she expected him to be hesitant about this. Gemma expected the reporter to attempt to make a bigger sell on the opportunity but she simply nodded in acceptance. Irene Miranda's lack of reaction seemed to also unsettle Jaime as a look of confusion crossed his face. Now he suddenly looked uncertain of whether he had made the right choice, which must have been was Irene intended to do. "But just so I can get this straight if I were to say yes...I would meet Superman right?"
Irene smiled brightly like a part of her expected the question. "Would you like to meet him now?"
"Like now?" Jaime said in disbelief, still trying the best to hide his excitement but truly failing miserably at it. Even Gemma couldn't deny that the thought of meeting Superman excited her. She had lived in Metropolis for years and of course she had caught glimpses of Superman, but had never seen him up close. "If he's not busy that would be nice."
"I assume you have access to the roof?" Irene questioned as she looked to Gemma who had decided to remain silent for most of the conversation. It felt like a conversation that she really shouldn't be a part of considering that this was all about Jaime.
Gemma wasn't entirely sure how much she wanted to freely trust her, or how much they should play along. But really what was there to be skeptical about. The whole world practically knew that Irene Miranda was involved with the Justice League."Yes."
"Lead the way."
They all headed toward the elevator without saying another word. Even with all her doubts Gemma couldn't deny the excitement that buzzed through her as they took the elevator to the 30th floor, from there they would have to take a flight of stairs to the roof.
The last time that Gemma was on the roof was when Red Tornado had attacked her and let her fall 30 stories. The experience had only made her fear of heights worse, but it had been the least traumatic thing that had happened to her that week. But she pushed down the slight panic that creeped in as the stepped onto the roof.
Gemma almost expected Superman to already be standing on the roof waiting for them, but that wasn't the case as Irene Miranda walked to the center acting as if all of this was completely normal. Though if Gemma was being fair it was hard to figure at what was normal nowadays.
"Superman." The reporter said softly, her voice could barely be heard from the wind and the sound of the city down below. But apparently that didn't want because suddenly a figure appeared in the sky slowly lowering until he was flying a couple of feet away from them.
It was impossible not to look at him in awe, even Irene Miranda who had known him for years still looked amazed. Superman had not only saved the city but also the world more times than anyone could count. He wasn't human, but looking and him you would never assume it. The only thing visually other worldly about him was just how perfect everything about him seemed to be.
But to see him flying in front of them was incredible. Gemma could only imagine what it had to be like to see his other powers in action.
A slight smile touched Superman's lips as he looked at her. "Mrs. Miranda."
"Superman." Irene said returning his smile and it was like there was some shared secret between the two of them. There was something about the way that he looked at her, like if just the sight of her made the world just a little brighter. "This is Jaime and Gemma."
It was only then that his feet touched the ground and he finally looked away from Irene. He was a lot taller than Gemma expected and admittedly intimidating knowing everything that he could do.
"Very nice to meet you." Superman as he reached over to shake Gemma's hand first and then Jaime's. There was something so polite in the way that he spoke and Gemma couldn't deny how flustered she felt standing only a couple of steps away from Superman. He was unnaturally beautiful, he almost didn't seem real.
"They really wanted to meet you." Irene added.
Leaving people stunned by his presence alone was undoubtedly nothing new for him. Turning to look at Jaime it was clear that he was left equally as speechless as Gemma felt. This all had to be some attempt by Irene Miranda to seal the deal, because there was absolutely no way that Jaime would turn down their offer now.
"I speak for the rest of us when I say that we look forward to getting to know you Jaime." Superman replied his tone was gentle but firm. Like Jaime he must had had a secret identity, a completely different when he wasn't saving the world. But it was difficult to see him as human knowing everything that he could do.
Jaime glanced over to Gemma, who couldn't help but feel slightly confused. It was like he was expecting some kind of answer from her, or like if he was remember exactly the reason he said he had to think about it before. Gemma didn't particularly like the thought that she might be holding him back if that was the case.
"Well, sir I would still need some time to think about it." Jaime finally said and just like Irene only moments ago, Superman did not seem appear surprised by his response. It was like it was a response that he expected.
"I understand. This is a lot of responsibility." Superman stated stoically, his red cape fluttering from the wind in a way that somehow made him look even more heroic than he already did. Gemma instantly froze when he turned to her, again she couldn't help but to question why she was even here to begin with. "But as long as you have a home to come to after a long day, it makes the weight of that responsibility a little lighter."
Gemma had never really thought of or considered what Superman's normal human life could be. Of course he had one, he was hinting as much, and still it felt impossible. Was he a firefighter? A teacher? Maybe he worked an office job? It all felt a little too mundane for someone who was indestructible.
But there was something in Superman's tone that felt like he was communicating something else to Jaime. Something that only they would really understand. It really highlighted how much Jaime actually did need someone in his life that would understand the heroic aspects of his life. Although Gemma had experienced a lot with Jaime, especially his journey when he first became Blue Beetle there were simply somethings that she would never understand. At least not in the say that another superhero like Superman understood them.
Jaime nodded, understanding what Superman was telling him. "That's a lesson I recently learned sir."
"I am needed elsewhere. But whatever you decide Jaime, don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything." Superman continued suddenly appearing slightly distracted, there had to be someone out there that needed his help. Really they were lucky to have even gotten the few short moments with him. "It was a pleasure to meet you both. Mrs. Miranda."
He turned looked to Irene then, who like Gemma had chosen to remain quiet as the two heroes spoke.
They shared a smile, one that revealed the long history they had together before he flew off disappearing in the clouds in an instant. It was almost like he was never there. But somehow it was like his presence continued to weigh heavily in the silence that followed. Especially for Jaime who had the weight of a difficult decision on his shoulders.
"Here." Irene said as she held out what looked like any other smartwatch, and she didn't have to give any kind of explantation for them to know what it was. It was a way for Jaime to communicate with the other heroes, there was no question about it considering Irene had an identical watch on her wrist. Jaime hesitated to take it, but really how could he resist? The curiosity alone was enough for him to take it. "Even if you choose not to join. Keep it."
Although both Superman and Irene were making it clear that they weren't putting any pressure on Jaime to join, it was the fact alone that they were so welcoming regardless that enticed even Gemma. It was like everything about the offer was perfectly planed to make it as appealing as possible.
"Why now?" Gemma suddenly questioned maybe sounding a little overprotective and maybe overly skeptical about it all, even though there probably was no reason to be. "Jaime has been Blue Beetle for over two years now."
Irene smiled like she appreciated the question. "We did have to vet Jaime before extending an offer. Needed to make sure he has his heart in the right place. Soon enough you'll see we've had our eye on you two for quite some time."
That answer did nothing but leave Gemma with more questions, which was surely Irene Miranda's intention. It was frustrating but Gemma couldn't help but respect the way that she was good at her job. The reporter knew exactly what to say and do to keep them hooked and curious enough to make it impossible to dismiss her.
"The League is nothing without its scientists." Irene continued as she reached into her bag and pulled out a card. Gemma couldn't help but hesitate before taking the card, it was like if taking it meant that she was already affecting an offer that hadn't even been made. "And we could really use a doctor. Though I have a feeling you're going to need more time to think about it."
Gemma really did hate the fact that Irene Miranda seemed to know everything. She hated even more that she was intrigued, but the reality was that there was no time in her day to even do anything outside of the work she was already doing. And working alongside heroes just didn't feel like it was the work that she was meant to do.
"Well, I'm sure I've given you two a lot discuss." The reporter continued as she looked between Gemma and Jaime like she already knew everything. The decisions they were going to make, they way everything was going to go. Though it seemed to come more from experience.
And Irene was right. She had given Gemma and Jaime a lot the think about.
Gemma had been almost obsessively reading everything she could about Irene Miranda for the last hour. She wasn't entirely sure why she felt the need to look into the Daily Planet reporter, but she couldn't help it. It probably had mostly to do with the fact that Gemma hated feeling like there was something that she didn't know. It was worse when it felt like Irene Miranda knew it all, it was a little unsettling.
"So what exactly are you looking for?" Jaime questioned as he leaned over to look at her laptop, he hadn't really brought up what she was doing since she started although she could tell that he was curious and maybe even the slightest bit concerned.
The moment that they had come back from Palmer after having dinner with his family, Gemma had grabbed her laptop and sat in bed to get started on doing her research. The whole interaction with Irene and Superman was weighing heavily on both Gemma and Jaime. She could tell as much considering that Jaime hadn't mentioned it to his family, and Jaime told his family everything. He clearly hadn't made up his decision even though it was clearly something that he wanted to do.
"I don't know something... it freaks me out that she knows so much." Gemma admitted, maybe she was over reacting and being a little paranoid. But considering what happened with Thomas and how she didn't even notice the kind of person he was even when spending everyday together Gemma felt that she had to be a little more cautious of who she was trusting.
"I don't know." Jaime said as he leaned back against the headboard not at all concerned. They hadn't had much of a chance to keep speaking about what happened, but Gemma could tell that he was buzzing with excitement. The watch Irene had given him was sitting on the dresser on his side of the bed, and she knew he was just itching to look through it. "The Justice League sends her out to recruit people. I mean she's probably a saint."
Gemma rolled her eyes knowing that Jaime was probably already idolizing Irene Miranda and placing her on a pedestal. There was no denying how accomplished Irene Miranda was, she was considered one of the best reporters in world, and not to mention all the work she had done with the Justice League over the years. Maybe Jaime was right and she was a saint.
But it wasn't just that fact that Irene Miranda seemed to know everything about them, that much could be expected from and investigative reporter. It was also the fact that it looked like Irene and Superman had some kind of secret that unsettled her. "Something just doesn't seem right. I mean did you see the way they looked at each other?"
"Who?"
"Irene and Superman. But she's married to Clark Kent." Gemma said mostly to herself as she looked up a picture of Clark Kent and set it beside a photo of Superman. They were like polar opposites of each other. Clark Kent with his awkwardly large glasses and messy hair. Then there was Superman who could only be described as perfection. But there was just no denying the chemistry that Superman had with Irene Miranda, or maybe it was merely years of partnership that made it seem that way.
Jaime took a moment to look between the two pictures and she immediately knew that he was not convinced. "I don't see it."
Gemma shut the laptop closed in annoyance causing Jaime to laugh. He was right and she felt a little silly for even suggesting it. She knew that she was overthinking everything again and that there really was nothing to worry about regarding Irene Miranda. "Fine I guess I'm crazy."
"You're not crazy." Jaime assured her as he leaned back against the headrest, but there was slight smile on his lips that said otherwise. "Well, maybe just a little."
Jaime was clearly only teasing her, but Gemma couldn't help but be a slightest bit annoyed as she grabbed a pillow and tossed it at Jaime's face. Everything almost felt normal, but she also knew that there was a part of them that was trying to avoid what was going to be a difficult conversation.
Gemma knew that they couldn't push the topic back anymore, they had to address what Jaime planned of doing. What Irene Miranda had offering was something that would be a large commitment on his part. "What are you going to do then?"
Jaime went quiet for a moment as he sat up, turning to look at her fully. He had grown serious almost immediately and maybe that answer wasn't as clear for him as Gemma had initially thought. "What should I do?"
"It's not my decision to make." She replied not wanting to influence his decision. The last thing she wanted to do was advise him incorrectly and for him to later resent her for it. Who was she to make a decision that would affect the rest of his life?
This was simply just too big.
It was probably going to be one of the biggest decisions he would ever have to make. Jaime knew that and that was why he wasn't jumping at the opportunity to say yes.
"We're partners." He said simply as he reached out to take her hand. Since getting back together he had kept true to his word and been more open about his feelings. But it still surprised Gemma that he was referring to their relationship as a partnership. "This is going to change so much about our lives. About the life we're going to build together. It's a decision that we need to make together."
"The life we're going to build together?" Gemma found herself repeating in shock. Admittedly she really hadn't thought very much ahead, she always tended to focus on the present. Hearing that Jaime was already thinking much farther ahead than she was surprised her. Of course Gemma had never had any doubts about her feeling for Jaime, or the fact that she knew that she wanted him in her life.
But she also knew that Jaime had doubts in the past. Now he sounded a lot more sure of what he wanted.
"Yes...I mean if that's... if that's what you want?" Jaime stuttered any confidence he had in his words gone in an instant. Gemma hadn't meant for him to think that she didn't want what he was suggesting. In fact it was really all she wanted, even though she hesitated in expressing it as much as she had since that got back together. In the back of her mind there was still a part of her that feared Jaime leaving again.
Gemma had to admit that there was a part of her that continued to keep Jaime at arms length. But hearing that he really was committed was enough for her to break down that wall she had been keeping up in an attempt to protect herself.
"That's what I want." She confirmed seeing the relief immediately wash over him. Like he almost expected for her to be the one to turn away this time.
"You kind of scared me there for a second."
"You want to do this. I know you do." Gemma said trying to get back on subject and knowing that if he said no, he would regret it forever. Over the last two years he had been a hero all on his own, and there was no doubt that he had to feel a little lonely not being able to have someone else that understood the problems that he went through. Other heroes his age that he could connect with. "We'll figure everything else out along the way."
"What about you?"
"What about me?" Gemma questioned confused about what exactly he was referring too.
But the moment she asked the question she realized what he was talking about. She had though that it was Jaime that was avoiding the discussing Irene Miranda but really she was the one that didn't want to talk about it. It just felt like too much for them to handle. The had just gotten back together and things were just settling into place for them. Now they were going to have to change their lives in ways that were unpredictable.
"If you accept that means that we could find more time to spend together." Jaime suggested and although that was true it wasn't enough to fully convince her.
"We don't even know what I would be accepting. She wasn't very specific." Gemma replied realizing that Irene had been right she would need more time to think about it. It wasn't that she was completely opposed to the idea, knowing that in helping the Justice League behind the scenes she would still be helping people in a way. "I just feel like I can help more people with the work at Ivo Tech than patching up superheroes. I would need to think about it more.
Jaime didn't seem surprised by her words, or disappointed that she hadn't made a decision yet. He just smiled as he moved a little closer to her. "I mean I can't really blame them for wanting that brain of yours. I don't think there's anything that you can't do."
Gemma had never been particularly good with compliments and praises. Especially when they came from Jaime, she could already feel herself begin to blush at his words. Even if he was giving her far too much credit.
"How about you future lawyer? You never told me about the other schools you were accepted into."
Jaime's uncertainty a moment ago came rushing back at the reminder that he also had to make a decision about what school he was going to go to. Not that Gemma could blame him it was too many big decisions for just one day. But it was unfortunate that he didn't seem as accepted this morning regarding him returning to school. "I got accepted into MU today. I think that's the school I'm going to choose."
He was going back to law school which was already going to be taking up a large portion of his time, if he accepted joining the team that would be another commitment that would take up a large portion of his time. It was two big commitments to take care of.
"Why Metropolis?" She asked even though she knew exactly why he was leaning towards MU, it just didn't feel like a good enough reason. "You should choose Palmera."
It felt like the only right choice. It didn't feel fair for him to only choose Metropolis University to accommodate to her life. He already spent too much time in Metropolis for her, so much that he was neglecting his duties as Blue Beetle in Palmera City.
Gemma didn't want to take Blue Beetle away from Palmera.
Jaime shook his head, like if choosing Palmera wasn't the right choice even though he knew it was. "If I choose Palmera, between school and joining this new team we wouldn't have much time together. I don't want that."
Gemma didn't want that either. She wanted every second that she could to be with Jaime. And in that moment she found the answer to the question that she had been asking herself since their conversation with Irene Miranda and Superman. The question that had her feeling unsettled.
Initially she just didn't understand why Irene Miranda had chosen to discuss this new superhero team at Ivo Tech. The reporter could have easily gotten in contact with Jaime other ways that didn't involve sneaking into a building that had increased its security since the Red Tornado attack.
But Irene had wanted Gemma to be a part of that conversation. She knew that Jaime would need a push to accept, and Gemma was supposed to be the push he needed. It was almost irritating how well planned Irene Miranda had planned the interaction, but it was difficult to not admire how clever she was.
"Then I move to Palmera."
"No, that wouldn't be fair."
There really was no other choice, but it felt like the right choice to make. Jaime's family was in Palmera, they had them to think about too. But really it didn't feel like any kind of sacrifice for her. Of course she loved Metropolis, but she had grown up in Palmera. Ivo Tech had a location in the city. Not to mention that she would be able to see Jenny more often. Javier and Brenda were also from Palmera and would have no issue moving back. Really, it wasn't any kind of sacrifice at all.
"The work I do here I could do over there. Palmera is home." Gemma said simply knowing that there was no need to go into much explanation, he knew as well as she did that moving to Palmera was something that they would have been bound to do eventually.
Jaime didn't seem entirely convinced, maybe he was worried that she would come to resent him for the move in the future. But Gemma had no doubt in her mind that this was what they were supposed to do. "Are you sure?"
"Metropolis already has Superman. I don't think we should take Blue Beetle away from Palmera City." She replied firmly knowing that Palmera City had come to rely on the work that Jaime did as Blue Beetle. Crime in the city had dropped and it was considered so much safer since they had a hero of their own. Jaime was a part of something bigger than she would ever be able to understand. What she did understand was that in choosing to be with Jaime she knew that it would come with challenges and risks. "I think that Palmera is where we build our life together."
Jaime smiled as he learned forward and kissed her, and this time it was Gemma that deepened the kiss. Although he had been sleeping over for almost a month now, but they hadn't had sex in that time. She had been recovering the last couple of weeks, but she had to admit that she was tired of waiting.
She wasn't very sure how Jaime would react considering that he had really made any kind of indication that he even was interested in sex the last couple of weeks. Regardless Gemma moved so that she was straddling him, never breaking the kiss as his hands instinctively went to her sides pulling her closer. The last couple of nights they hadn't gone much father than this, it wasn't until Gemma reached down to remove Jaime's shirt that he realized where she intended for things to go.
Jaime pulled away from the kiss uncertainty and worry on his face. "Are you sure?"
"Only if you're gentle with me." Gemma teased as she ran her fingers through his hair before reaching down and pulling her t-shirt over head. There was a part of her that was a little afraid that maybe she was being too forward. Typically it was Jaime that initiated anything between them, but any kind of insecurities faded away by the way that he looked at her.
"I can be gentle." He whispered before kissing her again. It wasn't long until he flipped her over so that she was laying on her back. True to his word he was being gentle, maybe even a little too gentle. He undoubtedly was afraid of hurting her, but it had been enough time that her wounds were fully healed. Though she couldn't really blame him for being cautious, in fact it was really sweet.
"Wait. Ow." She muttered causing Jaime to immediately pull away. There was a look of concern and confusion that crossed his face as he sat up to look down at her. Gemma hadn't expected him to react that way and she couldn't help but laugh a little. She had meant to do it as a joke, but now she regretted it instantly from his reaction.
"That's not funny Gemma." Jaime said doing his best to suppress his own smile as he spread her legs open to position himself between them again. He placed on of his hands on the side of her face and to Gemma his touch felt heavenly. "That's really not funny."
"Sorry." She said with a smile as she placed her hand behind his neck pulling him down to her.
Gemma knew that it wasn't going to be easy for either of them to go around what was going to be their new life. But there was also something exciting about all the changes and possibilities. Whatever came their way they would get through it together, at the end of the day that was all that really mattered. That they were together.
A/N: Can't believe its finally the end! Thank you everyone for reading, your support really does mean a lot to me. Especially those of you who vote and comment on every chapter, I do read all your comments and your engagement means everything. I hope you enjoyed Gemma's story, she's a character that I really loved writing and will definitely miss. I am still continuing my Clark Kent series so that's not to say that you'll never see Gemma and Jaime again. I wanted to keep the ending a little bit open ended and teasing more to their story, because really this is kind of the beginning of their story if anything. Such a shame that we're never going to get a Blue Beetle 2. I hope you will continue to read my other DC stories and follow me along on other journeys. Again thank you so much!
