32| Acá Entre Nos

Gemma just hated all the conflicting feelings that were going through her head in a constant loop. The silence between her and Jaime since they had left the dinner was only causing her to overthink more. She attempted to distract herself with the sound of the rain, it was already dark and they still had five hours of driving left.

She just couldn't believe that Jaime had felt embarrassed to tell he what was going on with Tom. Did he not trust her? Or did he think that she would have chosen Tom?

Because that would have never been the case. She would have chosen Jaime, even if it meant losing Tom's friendship. That fact that Jaime thought otherwise only proved that he didn't know her at all. It felt terrible knowing that he hadn't felt comfortable enough with telling her how he felt.

Suddenly Jaime cut through the silence as he cleared his throat, his eyes firmly on the road ahead. "There's a motel coming up should probably get some rest."

"Yeah, that's a good idea." Gemma replied knowing that Jaime needed his rest too. She had been able to take a nap in the car, but Jaime hadn't slept in hours. Not to mention the rain only seemed to be getting worse.

It was also probably for the best that they spent some time away from each other. Being alone in a car together for hours was creating too much tension, especially after their conversation at the dinner. The last thing they needed was to actually get in a fight, and the way things were going that seemed like a real possibility.

There weren't many cars on the road by the time that Jaime finally pulled into the parking lot of the motel that he had mentioned. It definitely wasn't the type of place that Gemma was used to staying at, but considering the situation they were in it was best to stay somewhere small. It looked like an old motel, but from the amount of cars in the parking lot it looked like it wasn't struggling to stay in business. Or it might have been the rain that was brining in extra customers.

"Hold on." Jaime told her as he quickly got out of the car. Gemma watched from the mirror as Jaime opened the trunk of the car before heading to the passenger door. He opened the door for her and it was only then that she realized that it was an umbrella that he had gotten from the back. "Okay."

Jaime held the umbrella up covering her from the rain as she stepped out of the car.It was the kind of small gesture that had her feeling protected, while also giving her butterflies in her stomach. Gemma wanted nothing more than for Jaime to have just let her walk in the rain, but unfortunately that just wasn't who Jaime was. Which made it harder for her to keep being upset with him.

There weren't many lights around the motel, but then they reached the small office which was thankfully warm.

"Welcome." The girl at the front desk greet not bothering to look up from her phone until they were standing in front of her. She had tight red curls and large glasses sitting on the bridge of her nose. She had to least be straight out of high school she looked so young.

"Two rooms please." Gemma said and the girl at the front desk immediately frowned. Not that she was smiling much to begin with. Not the Gemma could blame the girl for looking annoyed, she could only imagine how boring it had to be for her to be on her own.

"I only have one."

That was definitely not the answer that Gemma wanted to hear. She wanted time away from Jaime and sharing a room was not something she looked forward too. "Is it a double?"

"Nope." The girl replied and in that moment Gemma wanted nothing more than to slam her head against the counter. Because of course the universe hated her enough to put her in this kind of situation. "You want it or not?"

"We'll take it." Jaime said after Gemma failed to reply quickly enough, his face was unreadable which made it impossible to guess what he thought about having to share a room. "How much for the night?"

"$89 for one night. Check-out is at noon."

Jaime quickly pulled out his wallet handing her the money. "Here you go."

The girl didn't say anything as she processed their room before handing Jaime the keys. The keys looked old as if it had been decades since the locks had been changed. It didn't make Gemma feel very safe, but it was only going to be for a night.

"Can I have extra pillows?" Gemma asked not sure if they even had extra pillows to spare. She felt Jaime's questioning glance but chose to ignore feel feeling like she didn't need an explanation for the pillows.

"How many?"

"Three." Gemma replied earning an annoyed glance for the inconvenience, but the girl still sent to the back room for the pillows. Gemma almost regretted asking as the pillows were placed on the counter in front of her. "Thank you."

The girl didn't reply as she went back to using her phone. Jaime and Gemma both shared a quick look before stepping out of the office, the last thing they wanted was to be even more of an inconvenience for the girl.

"What are the extra pillows for?" Jaime questioned a slight smile on his lips like everything was going the way that he wanted. It was annoying and she hated that things weren't going her way. She didn't even know why he would want to share a room with her after what happened at the diner.

"One of them is going to be for me to hit you with if you don't wipe that grin off your face." Gemma replied only causing him to chuckle as he pulled the room keys out of his pocket and handed them to her.

His smile didn't waver even with her threat as he also handed her the umbrella. "I'll go get the bags from the car. I'll meet you at the room."

Gemma watched for a moment as he ran out into the rain towards the car before she began walking down the row of rooms looking for theirs. Of course it had to be the one all the way at the end and considering that the lights in all the rooms were off, she could only guess that all the other guest were already asleep.

Opening the door to the room it was exactly what she could have expected. It was a small room with a reasonably sized bed, and thankfully it looked clean enough that she wasn't uncomfortable at the thought of having to sleep on it. Taking off her coat he hung it on a hook on the wall as she turned off all the lights.

It wasn't long before Jaime was back with her bags and he also quickly took off his wet hoodie. He didn't really say anything as he headed for the bathroom, retuning with a town to dry his hair. For some reason his silence made her feel a like awkward. Their silence for most of the car ride hadn't felt weird, but suddenly this silence felt different.

The problem was that she couldn't really think of anything to say as she simply opened her bag to look for the pajamas that she had packed.

"Do you just want to go to bed or do you want to watch a movie?" Jaime asked finally breaking the silence, looking up to meet his eyes she realized that he looked just as uncertain as she did. What did a person do when the had to share a motel room with their ex?

It was really just a recipe for disaster. The best thing that they could do was just sleep through the night to avoid anymore awkward interactions or fighting. "It's already late and we have to wake up early tomorrow."

"Right." Jaime muttered as he took a seat at the edge of the bed to take off his shoes.

Seeing as the conversation was over Gemma grabbed her bag to get ready for bed. Closing the bathroom door behind her Gemma wondered that if she stayed in the bathroom long enough then maybe he would just fall asleep and they could avoid anymore awkward interactions. But she knew she was being ridiculous and immature. Jaime was probably acting more normal about this than she was.

Quickly she changed out of her clothes and into her pajamas, she couldn't help but look into the mirror and fix her hair. She looked like a tired mess and there was undeniably a part of her that didn't really want Jaime to see her that way.

When Gemma finally stepped out of the bathroom Jaime was also ready for bed. Only he was wearing a lot less clothes then she was, Gemma really shouldn't have been surprised he never really slept with more than his boxer briefs. Even though it really wasn't anything out of the ordinary Gemma couldn't help but feel a little annoyed, but she was a little relieved with the fact that she had thought ahead and had gotten the extra pillows.

She did her best to not look his way as she walked to the right side of the bed and began to adjust the three pillows in the center. She knew she wouldn't be able to sleep without that barrier between her and Jaime.

"What are you doing?" Jaime questioned as he stepped closer to the bed. He initially looked a little amused, but quickly realized what was happening as a frown formed on his lips.

Gemma set the last pillow down in the center of the bed. "Setting up a barrier."

"Does sharing a bed with me make you uncomfortable?" He asked a look of genuine hurt on his face that she had not expected. She figured that he would understand and not make a big deal about the pillows. She definitely did not expect him to think that he was making her conformable when that was not the case. But for some reason she felt at loss of words. "I don't want you to feel uncomfortable."

"Jaime..." Gemma began to say but the words got stuck in her throat. She couldn't help but feel bad about making him feel the way he was now. "You're making a big deal about this."

"I don't think I can sleep like this."

"Like how?"

"Like this." He said raising his voice slightly as he gestured at the pillows. "I'm going to sleep in the car."

Gemma watched in shock as he put is jeans and shirt back on. Initially she wanted to believe that it was some kind of joke, because he couldn't possibly be serious. But when he opened the door and stepped outside without even looking back she realized that it wasn't a joke. Snapping out of her state of shock she crossed the room and locked the door, because of he thought that she was going to run after him he was wrong.

"Fine." Gemma muttered to herself annoyed that he was overreacting. She had never said anything about his making her uncomfortable. It was so far from the truth because even after everything that happened between them she still felt safe around Jaime. She knew that he would never do anything to make her uncomfortable.

The truth was that Gemma didn't trust herself. She needed a physical barrier between them because the barrier that she had built in her mind was weak. When it came to Jaime she was weak.

Even though he completely broke her heart there was no denying the part of her that still wanted him. If he kept telling her that he loved her Gemma didn't know how much longer she could resist. She so badly wanted to believe that he did love her, and maybe he did. But in the end it was so difficult to forget the way that he had hurt it her.

Grabbing the extra pillow she had set on the bed she threw them to the ground in annoyance. She just couldn't;t wrap her mind around the fact that he had gotten upset over some stupid pillows. Now the idiot was going to sleep in a cold car for the whole night, but that had been his decision and not hers.

Turning off the light she pushed the covers down before laying down on the bed. The moment her head hit the pillow she knew that she wasn't going to be getting any sleep. She was too upset now and the thought of Jaime sleep in the car just didn't feel right.

Groaning she sat up again not bothering to turn on the light again as she walked across the room to put on her coat that was hanging on the wall. Now she had to go out in the rain to go get Jaime because he was choosing to make a big deal out of something so meaningless. But when Gemma opened the door she immediately froze at the sight of Jaime standing outside.

He was completely soaked and she wondered if he had even made it into the car before he had come back. Jaime seemed just as surprised to see her as his eyes widened. Clearly he hadn't expected her to open the door before he knocked, that is if he even was going to knock.

"I do know you Gemma." He declared as he took a step toward out of the rain, Gemma immediately took took a step back  to give him enough room to come inside.

Jaime didn't say anything else as he stepped inside.  He remained quiet until Gemma locked the motel door. The silence made her a lot more nervous than she expected. There was a weird feeling building up in her chest as he suddenly took a step closer to her.

Gemma instinctively took a couple of steps back but he continued closing the gap between them until her back hit the door. She had felt like she needed space because she didn't entirely trust herself. Some of Jaime's wet curls were clinging to his face and there was a look in his eyes that lit a desire in her that she had been desperately trying to extinguish.

"I know you." He repeated not breaking eye contact with her. All the embarrassment and shame that he had at the diner was gone. The Jaime standing in front of her now was confident and maybe still a little angry from their stupid argument over pillows. "I know that you like drinking your coffee where its pretty much hot enough to burn your tongue. I know that you rewatch the same five TV shows and movies cause you're afraid of wasting your time watching something you won't like. I know that every time you feel stressed you have to put your hair up in a ponytail. I know that your nose gets pink right before you're going to cry. So don't say that I don't know you."

"Okay you know me." Gemma said softly unable to deny the fact that there were somethings about her that he did know. She only hoped that he didn't notice how shaky her voice had become, but they were so close that it was impossible for him not to.

Jaime reached out and placed his hand on her cheek, his thumb slowly brushing across her lower lip. Gemma was sure that she had lost the ability to breath as Jaime stepped even closer, his body pressing hers further onto the door. "Can I kiss you now?"

This was the exact situation that Gemma had wanted to avoid and deep down knew would happen even if they had gotten separate rooms. The way that they had broken up hadn't given either of them any kind of closure. There were still so many things and feelings that they needed to sort through.

Regardless of whatever they still needed to sort through Gemma found herself nodding. She just couldn't say no to something that she wanted. And she so badly wanted him to kiss her.

Jaime's movements were painfully slowly as she waited in anticipation for his lips to touch her's. But when they did the wait was worth it because it felt like nerve ending in her body was alive. She expected him to kiss her wildly and without restitutions, but his kiss was soft and slow. It was like her really was taking his time to memorize the shape of her lips again.

"I've missed you." He muttered against her lips as he finally kissed her more deeply.

There really were no words to describe the way she felt whenever he was around. It was confusing in so many ways, but something that wasn't confusing was the way that her heart was practically jumping in her chest every time he put his lips on hers. She had missed him too.

She could feel the wetness from his shirt begin to seep into her own. Maybe it was an excuse to do what she really wanted to do, but she found herself reaching down to the hem of his shirt before pulling it over his head. She just couldn't help herself, but that seemed ti give Jaime the courage that he needed as he then began to kiss down her neck.

It had been so long since he kissed her and she admittedly was greedy and wanted more. Jaime had to sense as much as he moved his hands down her body until they were behind her knees allowing him to pick her up enough that she could wrap her legs around his waist.

He kissed her again each kiss slightly more rough than the last. And she couldn't believe that she had forgotten what it was like to kiss him or the way that he tasted. She wondered if he had forgotten what it was like to kiss her too? Though that didn't really seem to be the case as he kissed her like he had never stopped. Like if they hadn't spent months without seeing each other.

It was impossible to even guess how long they had simply been kissing before he slowly began walking them towards the bed. Suddenly their argument over the pillows felt so much more stupid considering what needed up happening anyway. Jaime gently laid her down on the bed before pausing to look her in the eye. It was like he wanted to see if she had any regrets, and maybe some morning she would. Maybe he would regret it too.

He lifted his hand caressing her cheek, he was gentle. He always was but it was like he was expecting everything to just fall apart again.

"I don't even think there's words do describe how I get lost just by the idea of you." He said before kissing her again and she hated that he could say things like that while there was a part of her that doubted how much he meant the words.  But fir just one night she wanted to forget all her insecurities about her relationship with Jaime.

Maybe just for one night it didn't have to matter, and they could just deal with the consequences in the morning.

A/N: Only four more chapters to go! I wrote so many versions of this chapter going back and forth on which was the right version. I really have just been trying to slowly dissect Gemma and Jaime's relationships and highlight their own insecurities. Like this is definitely a miscommunication trope and although its annoying I just feel like it makes sense of their characters. And their growth is them learning to better communicate with each other.
