16| Mi Corazoncito

Jenny and Gemma were sitting on the edge of what it was safe to assume was the bed of Jenny's parents. Although she had tried to act as normal as possible as she gave Jaime her father's clothes, it was impossible for her to completely hide the way it was affecting her.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Gemma questioned breaking the silence that had grown between them since Jaime had gone in the bathroom to change. She wasn't sure if Jenny would even want to talk about it. Gemma definitely knew that she hated talking about her father mostly, unfortunately it was a difficult topic for her to escape. The whole world knew what her father had done, it was impossible for her not to talk about it.

Jenny shook her head as she looked up as a large painting on the other side of the room. "Not really. It's hard not to think about her while I'm here."

"Do you want to talk about her?"

"She was great. She changed my dad's life. She was the one who taught him that the world is a place to protect." Jenny said softly, there were tears already building up in her eyes at the memory. It was an odd thing for memories to both be beautiful and yet cause so much pain. "But when my mom died, he... he really went adrift. He obsessed over the Scarab and he would disappear for days. Sometimes weeks. And one day, he... he left and... didn't come back."

Jenny hadn't gotten much into the reason why her father had began obsessing over the Scarab. That it was her mother's death that had caused her father to spiral, and although it was selfish of her Gemma couldn't help but think about her father. About for similar Jenny's life had been to her own. .

"I think they, uh... I think they fit.And they're comfy, too, so..." Jaime started as he stepped out of the bathroom he had just started zipping up the blue jacket when he froze and realized that they had been in the middle of a conversation.

Jenny quickly brushed away her tears as stood up. "Good. I'm going to go see if Rudy needs anything."

Before Gemma could even try to protest Jenny was already leaving the room eager to leave. Unfortunately for Gemma the last thing that she wanted was to be alone with Jaime, after what had happened earlier it still felt weird between them.

"Is Jenny okay?" He questioned slowly clearly unsure if he should even ask.

Gemma remained silent for a moment, not sure what to say. Jenny wasn't alright, she was still mourning her mother and father. But it wasn't her place to give details about her life to Jaime.

"She alright it's just... being back here must bring back a lot of memories for her." Gemma said simply was she finally looked back at Jaime.

"I can't imagine how she must feel."

Gemma started looking through the first-aid kit, but not much in it would be of any use. The kit was over a decade old but luckily Jaime didn't seem to have any serious injuries. "You have a beautiful family Jaime. Not everyone is lucky enough to have that."

"Does that include Rudy?" Jaime questioned and Gemma couldn't help but laugh. She was glad that at least things weren't weird anymore, it felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders and that she could relax a little.

"Yeah that includes Rudy." She finally replied because as difficult as Rudy was there was something so genuine about him. He was the type of person that clearly never failed to make the people he loved laugh. "You can sit down."

Jaime walked across the room and sat at the edge of the bed. He had washed the blood off his face but the cut at the top of his head was still visible. Considering how much blood had come out of the wound the cut itself was shockingly small.

"How are you feeling?" Gemma questioned as she pushed his hair back to take a closer look at the cut. It wasn't very deep and it wouldn't need stitches, but it wasn't the cut itself that she was worried about. "Do you feel dizzy or confused? Maybe blurry vision?"

"Never felt better." He replied as he looked up to meet her eyes, there was something about the way that he was looking at her that made her pull her hand back. Gemma realized then that he had made her nervous, but she didn't have much time to think too much on it as she noticed a blue glow coming from the cuts on Jaime's cheek. She felt her eyes go wide as the cuts disappeared from his face, she had never seen anything like it. "What is it?"

Gemma couldn't help but reach forward and run her thumb across his cheek where the cut had been only seconds ago. She was amazed to find that it was completely healed. "You just healed yourself. Or the Scarab did."

Jaime quickly got to his feet rushing to the bathroom to look at himself in the mirror. Gemma still felt stunned herself as she took a seat on the edge of the bed trying to work through how it was even possible.

"That's awesome." Jaime said as he stepped out of the bathroom looking genuinely amazed. Maybe not everything about the Scarab was terrible, but she finally realized why her father had become interested in the Scarab. It was the ability to heal its host, Anthony Ivo had undoubtedly considered trying to understand the technology behind that healing ability.

Her father had possibly lost interest in it when he had begun working on AMAZO and became more interested in trying to find a way to immortality.

"Are you okay?" Jaime suddenly questioned snapping her out of her thoughts. Gemma hadn't realized that she had gone back to that place where she tried to understand her father's mind. Understand why he had done the things that he had done. It was a dark place that she didn't enjoy being in.

"Its just ummm... at some point my father in the Scarab. I can see why now, its healing abilities..." Gemma didn't know what exactly to say, if she said anymore then he would probably think that she was insane. "I'm sorry I don't know why... why I'm bothering you this."

"You can tell me about it is you want." He said quickly as he took a seat beside her on the bed. They were so close that their shoulders were touching and Gemma almost had to fight the urge to move away feeling a little overwhelmed. But she knew that she would only make things awkward if she moved away. There was also the way that he looked at her, like if he truly cared to listen to what was bothering her. "Sometimes it helps to talk about it."

Gemma couldn't help but hesitate for a little, in many ways she felt like a bit of a freak show. Her life was overly chaotic and maybe she was too smart. She had quickly discovered that people didn't really like the fact that she was so smart, like if she was annoying for knowing almost everything. Then there was her father. Sometimes she felt like people expected her to flip a switch and suddenly lose her mind the way that he had.

"When my mom got sick my dad lost himself in trying to find cure and then she died and he completely changed. He became obsessed with the idea of immorality. That's why he went after the Justice League and the crazy thing is that he doesn't see what he did as wrong." She said not even able to look Jaime in the eyes and choosing to focus on the chair at the other side of the room. "I wasn't until recently that I realized just how alone I am. It's like I have everything and nothing at the same time."

"You have Javier you can tell that he really cares and then there's Jenny..."

"Jenny and I just met." Gemma clarified, but in that short time they had known each other it truly felt as if they had known each other for much longer. They were in the same situation and in many ways Gemma was glad that she was able to find someone that understood her in ways that no one else could.

"Well, anyone that doesn't want to be in your life is really missing out."

A small smile touched Gemma's lips knowing that he was doing his best to make her feel better, in the end he had been right talking about it had made her feel better. "You're a good listener. Thank you."

"My mom says it's 'cause I got big ears." Jaime said and Gemma couldn't help but laugh a little grateful for his attempt to try to lighten the mood. She was also grateful that he didn't seem to be judging her or seeing her any different than before.

Gemma was about to wipe away her tears but her fingers were laced with Jaime's. She hadn't realized the he had taken her hand at some point when she was speaking, but now that she had it was like if she had forgotten how to breath.

Against her judgment Gemma looked up to meet Jaime's eyes, he almost looked just as shocked and confused as she felt. But she felt something between them change, and she wondered if he felt it too. Or maybe it was all in her head?

She knew it couldn't simply all be in her head when he pulled his hand away from hers and placed it on her cheek wiping away her tear. The action caused her to freeze not entirely sure how she should react only knowing that it felt nice when he touched her. She could immediately feel her skin go warm.

When Jaime began to lean forward it wad almost like time had stopped completely. Gemma could feel her heart beating wildly in her chest in anticipation, she knew that she wanted him to kiss her. She had wanted this since they were in high school, but she couldn't shake the singular doubt that she had.

That maybe this was them just getting swept up in the moment. That after all of this was over Jaime would realize that he never actually like her, that he only felt gratitude because she had helped him. That he would just leave like everyone else in her life.

And even with the heavy weight of that doubt she found herself slowly leaning into him too.

"Hey, guys, I found something that..." Rudy exclaimed as suddenly to bedroom door swung opening causing Gemma and Jaime to instinctively move away from each other. "Oh!"

"Nothing happened." Gemma found herself saying and not knowing why she felt the need to say it. But it had been the truth, nothing had happened and Gemma couldn't help but feel a little disappointed.

"Her mom died and her dad is evil." Jaime said quickly and Gemma realized that they had just made themselves seem even more guilty. Guilty of what? She wasn't entirely sure she hadn't processed it herself, but what she did know was that her heart was still racing in her chest.

"I found something you guys need to look at." Rudy said instead thankfully choosing to ignore whatever he thought he had walked into.

"Oh, great. That's great. Let's go." Gemma said quickly as she started walking towards the not looking back at Jaime but meeting Jenny's amused eyes. Shaking her head Gemma walked past her not even wanting to sort out what had just happened. Or more like what was about to happen. Considering everything else that was going on it was best not to think about it.

"Nice jammies, guey." Rudy joked as they walked back towards what used to be Ted Kord's Blue Beetle hideout.

Suddenly everything felt a lot more complicated, luckily for them Rudy had found how to take the Scarab out of Jaime. After they did that they could find a way to destroy it, although it was a bit of a shame that such an advanced piece of technology was going to get destroyed. But that was there was no other choice, destroys the Scarab would make sure that Victoria Kord wouldn't continue to pursue them.

That meant that it would all be over and then they could all go back to their normal lives.

A/N: Cant' believe we're coming to the end of part one already. I just finished the outline for part two and I am already so excited to get started on it. The next chapter will unfortunately not be as fun as this one and considering I always struggle with writing action scenes it might be a while till the next update if I'm being honest. Fingers crossed that writing the fight scenes don't give me the writer's block they usually do.
