11| Adrenaline Rush

It wasn't long before Gemma and Jaime were on the move again driving to one of Jenny's apartments in the city.

Gemma had lost her phone at some point when Jaime had picked her up in the middle of the street, luckily Jenny had given him her number two days ago. When she had called her there wasn't much time to explain, Jenny didn't even question why Gemma was with Jaime. Jenny had been to busy telling them to hurry up.

"You really think Jenny has the answers?" Jaime questioned skeptically.

"If there is an answer she'll be the only one who has it." Gemma replied confident the Jenny had to have the answer, or at least that it would be somewhere in her father's files.

"But you know stuff about this thing too?"

Gemma wished that she had asked Jenny more about the Scarab, but all the she had cared about in the moment was finding a way to stop Victoria Kord. "I only know what little Jenny told me about it."

"Like?"

Gemma looked over at Jaime and although his eyes were focused on the road ahead she could see that he was scared. "Like the fact that it chooses its host. It's like a parasite looking to form a symbiotic relationship with you."

He was silent for a moment, like she didn't know what he wanted to say. Or maybe he did know, but was too afraid to ask. "And you don't think it'll be easy to remove?"

Although she wished that she could tell him that she believed it was going to be easy she couldn't. Gemma couldn't lie to him, it just felt cruel. And as a scientist and doctor she knew what the truth was. She didn't have all the information, but she could hypothesize. And she knew that removing the Scarab would not be easy.

"It chose you Jaime. I don't think it's going to let you go that easily." Gemma replied knowing that the Scarab had probably spent years without a host. Now it had Jaime, it was naive of them to even think that the solution to their problem was going to be easy.

They didn't even know why it had chosen him. What made Jaime Reyes special enough to get chosen by The Scarab?

"Well that would sound a lot more romantic if we weren't talking about the thing attached to my back!" He snapped as his hands tightened around the steering wheel.

Gemma was well aware that Jaime was having a pretty terrible day, but that was no excuse for him to raise his voice. Even if his anger or frustration wasn't directed towards her. "Well you don't need to yell at me."

"I'm sorry I didn't mean to yell." He apologized but Gemma couldn't help but feel irritated, because she was doing her best. And she was just as frustrated that she hadn't been able to find an answer. She wasn't used to failure. "Oh come on princesa don't get mad."

Gemma shook her head and crossed her arms over chest as she looked out the window. "I'm not mad."

"Thank you for trying to help me even after I kidnapped you." Jaime continued and although she was grateful that he wanted to apologize she didn't want it. She was on edge too, and she understood him. They both hadn't had a moment to rest since yesterday afternoon. "I don't want to seem ungrateful. I'm happy that you're here... even if you're not."

"Why did you... why did you kidnap me?" Gemma questioned seeing the opportunity of getting an answer that didn't make any sense to her.

Jaime looked like he was at a lose of words as he looked at the road ahead. Clearly he didn't even know the answer to her question. After all he wasn't the one the took her, not really. It was the Scarab that had done it.

"First of all can we stop using the word kidnap, it makes me feel gross." He muttered as his face scrunched up a little and he shuddered as if disgusted with himself. Jaime turned and looked at her for a moment before looking back at the road ahead. "I'm not really sure I know why this thing decided to do that. My guess is that... we'll on the street when you recognized me I was relieved. I knew you were smart and that you could help me. I guess it thought that you would I don't know comfort me. Considering I was freaking out and all."

Suddenly it all came back to her, and she couldn't believe that she had forgotten. Maybe it was because things between them were beginning to feel more comfortable and less awkward.

But it was impossible to entirely ignore what she felt. Even if she felt childish, and even if those feeling should have been in the past.

"That makes sense." She replied softly as she looked away from him quickly. The last thing she needed was for Jaime to realize the way she felt. The way she had always felt.

They grew silent again, and Gemma was almost afraid that she had made a mistake. That she had made him uncomfortable by asking the question and now things between them would be weird again.

"So itchy, this thing." Jaime suddenly said breaking the silence as he started to scratch his back.

"Then stop scratching it." Gemma replied but he only began to scratch it more furiously. "Jaime."

"Ay, okay." Jaime muttered as he removed his hand and placed it back on the steering wheel. "No way. What the..."

The car began to slow down as two figures moved across the street as they hid behind cars along the way.

"Jenny?" Gemma questioned as Jaime stopped the car right beside them. They both had a panicked look in their eyes that eased once they saw Gemma. "Javier? What are...."

"Just go. They're coming." Jenny said quickly as she opened the backseat door and immediately climbed inside. Javier was right behind her as they both took a seat but they looked anything but relaxed.

They were both sweating like they had been running for miles. And Gemma could only imagine that they both had been on the run the whole time she had been with Jaime. Though she did wonder how Javier and Jenny had found each other.

Jaime turned around to look between Jenny and Javier confused. "Who's them?"

"Them!" Javier yelled and suddenly the sounds of gunshots were heard all around them.

Gemma couldn't help but scream at the sound of the bullets going through the metal of the truck and shattering the rear window.

Jaime frantically reached for the gear stick not even daring to look behind them. "Oh, God. Okay!"

"Let's go! Let's go!" Javier continued to order as they sped forward. Luckily it was late enough that the streets in the neighborhood were empty.

"Okay, okay!" Jaime exclaimed as his foot slammed on the gas forcing the truck toward faster than it was probably able to go. "Oh, my God!"

"I told you to go!" Jenny yelled as he sharply turned a corner as the sounds of gun shots followed them.

"You should have started with, they have guns!" He replied clearly trying his best to try to remain calm. Though it was clear that he was panicking and they entered a busy street.

"Watch out!" Gemma yelled just as another car almost crashed into them as Jaime ran a red light.

Instinctively Gemma closed her eyes expecting them to crash but all she heard was the sound of car horns in the distance. The silence between the four of them was difficult to bear as they waited for gunshots to follow them again but they never did.

"I think we lost them." Javier said as he relaxed against the seat.

Gemma wasn't sure how he could even think about relaxing, her heart was still racing in her chest. It felt as if her heart was going to burst. She was sure that she had never experienced something that terrifying, and she never wanted to experience that feeling again.

Unfortunately she had the feeling that worse was yet to come.

Jaime reached forward and touched the large crack in the windshield where a bullet had gone through. "Oh, Rudy's gonna kill me."

Gemma couldn't help but look at Jaime in disbelief. After what they had just experienced he was worried about the truck and not that they were still being followed.

Jenny didn't have to say anything for her to know that this was all Victoria Kord. Maybe Gemma continued to be naive because she hadn't expected Victoria Kord to go to those kinds of lengths to get the Scarab back.

To be willing to kill her own niece felt like a whole new level of cruel that she just hadn't expected. But clearly Victoria Kord didn't have any morals when it came to obtaining the power of the Scarab.

A/N: A but if a shorter chapter, but one that does help move the plot forward. I'll be changing a couple of things about what happens but not much. I have been focusing on finishing Don't Worry Darling for those who are reading that story so the updates on this story have slowed done a bit.
