06| Parece Que Fue Ayer

Gemma sat on Victoria Kord's couch feeling nervous about what Jenny and her were about to do. She hated confrontation of any kind and she knew that their conversation with Victoria Kord would unravel negatively.

They were uninvited guest in her mansion. They were there to end a project that she was working on. They were young and Victoria Kord was going to see them as nothing more but children.

"Do you think your aunt will take this well?" Gemma questioned even though she suspected what the answer was going to be. But that didn't mean she was any less nervous.

"No. Not at all." Jenny replied bluntly.

Jenny stood when her aunt stepped into the room, and Gemma wished she could be half as confident as Jenny. All she could do was stay back as Jenny took a step forward knowing that she had to be the one to take charge of the conversation. "Aunt Vicki?"

"Jennifer, what are you doing here? I didn't know you were coming." Victoria Kord exclaimed as she pulled Jenny into a tight hug. She turned to the man standing by the door, that same wide smile on her face. And as much as Gemma always tries to see the good in people there was something about Victoria Kord that didn't feel real. "Oh, Carapax, this is Ted's daughter. My favorite niece, Jennifer."

Neither Jenny or Carapax acknowledged one another. Though for Carapax it mostly seemed to be due to him being stripped of any kind of personality.

Victoria turned to Gemma for the first time, her eyes widening and acting as if she hadn't seen her in the room until now. "And you are?"

"Gemma Ivo." She replied and watched as the smile in Victoria Kord's face faltered slightly.

"So, to what do I owe this unexpected pleasure?" Victoria replied as she turned her attention back to Jenny.

Victoria was a smart woman, she knew exactly why they were there. But she was choosing to pretend she was unaware of what was happening.

Jenny said nothing as she reached forward for the remote, turning on the large television screen. With permission from Jenny, hacking into Kord Industries was a satisfying challenge.

However, hacking into the system led them to finding that Victoria Kord had advanced the O.M.A.C technology much father than they had expected.

The television came alive as Victoria Kord appeared on the screen on a promotional video starring herself.

"The world has changed. Kord Industries faces an unprecedented challenge to secure our assets, both here and abroad, from our promethium mines in Guatemala, to our real estate developments right here in Palmera City."

The video displayed how the O.M.A.C technology would connect to the human brain of the soldier by embedding a chip at the base of the neck. It wasn't what he father had originally developed with Victoria, her way was lazy and almost barbaric.

"Introducing the future of private policing: The O.M.A.C., the 'One Man Army Corps.' Using revolutionary Kord symbiotech, the O.M.A.C. connects directly into the human brain, to create a self-contained war unit, allowing a single soldier to harness the power of legions. The O.M.A.C. ensures security Kord can rely on. A future we can control. The O.M.A.C."

A pleased sigh left the woman's lips as the video ended. She clearly didn't see anything wrong with the video and was unfazed by the irritated look on Jenny and Gemma's faces.

"Think it works pretty well, don't you?" She questioned clearly proud of herself.

"So, this..." Jenny began a frustrated sigh leaving her lips. "the weapons devision was shut down years ago. Why have you relaunched it?"

Victoria Kord chuckled clearly amused by Jenny and not taking anything about the situation seriously. "Jennifer, the O.M.A.C. is the future of this company. You should be so excited."

"No, no, no. I really want to know what's at Pago Island?" Jenny insisted, she believed that her aunt was out there in search of the Scarab. But there was no real way of knowing for sure, or if it even existed anymore.

"That's classified. It's a secret." The woman continued as if it was all a joke, like if Jenna and Gemma being there was all a part of the game. Like they would accept what she was saying and move on. "But I'll tell you, what isn't classified is what's gonna go on at this party. It's gonna be an amazing evening with some very interesting people, so if you wanna come, bring your little friend and it'll be fun. All right, see you later."

Victoria Kord stepped forward placing to quick kisses on Jenny's cheek as she grabbed her arm attempting to pull her out of the room.

Jenny stopped pulling her arm back "I know what you're doing, Vicki. We don't make weapons anymore."

"Whoa, whoa, we? Who's we? You are nothing to this company. You're an expense. A brat in her daddy's board seat." Victoria finally snapped, and the woman's words made her think about herself. Was that what everyone at Ivo a tech thought of her? "Jet-setting around the world on the company's dime, doing your charity work."

Jenny seemed shocked by her aunt's words, most importantly she looked hurt by them. "My father would never..."

"Look, your father was handed a company I built... my company. Which he then proceeded to almost sink with his moronic inventions and his reckless management, and then after he'd done all that, you know what he did? He just disappeared, and left me to pick up the pieces. Your father abandoned this company. And he abandoned you."

"I won't let you do this."

Victoria's face twisted into something unrecognizable from the fun aunt act that she had been using. "Don't get in my way, Jennifer."

"Back away." Jenny warned making it clear that she had to plan to back down from this. "I'm not afraid of you."

"Maybe you should be."

"That's enough." Gemma said finally speaking up. She could no longer stand by and allow Victoria Kord to be so vicious. She was here to support Jenny, and she had been to stunned by Victoria to be of any help until now. "The design models you're using were first developed by Ivo Technologies...."

Carapax grunted as he stepped towards Jenny and Gemma the threat perfectly clear now. She hadn't paid much attention to the man before, but she saw him now. He seemed to be part of Victoria Kord's security, maybe he was a war veteran. She couldn't be sure but was she did know was that he was loyal to Victoria.

"Hey, hey!" A new voice yelled causing everyone to turn their attention to the hallway where they had an unexpected spectator to their argument. "Uh, you should back away, ma'am."

Suddenly it was like she was 14 again, when she saw Jaime Reyes for the first time. Back when her heart began beating abnormally fast and she got butterflies in her stomach.

But she wasn't 14 anymore, and it was ridiculous for her to still feel something.

"Jaime?" She said softly and his name caused him to finally look away from Jenny and look to Gemma.

There was no recognition in his eyes, not that she expected it. They had never spoken before in high school. Even when they had the same classes.

Of course he still didn't see, even after four years. Though Gemma couldn't really blame him for being captivated by Jenny.

"Oooh-whee! That was lavish!" Someone exclaimed as they stepped out of the bathroom. Her eyes widened as she realized that she wasn't alone. Like Jaime she was wearing an all white uniform with Victoria Kord's initials embroidered on the chest. Gemma only now realized that they worked for her. "Oh, shit."

"And who are you, handsome?" Victoria questioned and although there was a smile on her lips there was malice behind her eyes.

"Jaime Reyes." He replied nervously.

"I think it's time to find a new job, Jaime Reyes." Victoria stated before looking to Jaime's sister too. "You, too, toilet. Go. Andale."

They were silent as they watched the Reyes siblings leave the house. Gemma couldn't help but feel horrible that they had just lost their jobs. And not to mention how annoyed she was at Victoria Kord's mocking tone.

"I don't believe the general public will accept products that were made in collaboration with the man who invented AMAZO." Gemma stated and if Victoria Kord wasn't already furious the woman looked like she was moments away from fully snapping. "It's in your best interests to shut this down."

"Are you threatening me little girl?" Victoria questioned, her words meant to belittle and mock Gemma. She wanted to break what little confidence she had found, but Gemma had been dealing with these kinds of comments her whole life.

Everyone always said that she was just a child, even when she was the smartest person in a room.

"I'm just stating facts." Gemma replied simply.

Jenny knew just as well as Gemma did that this was where the conversation had to end. So when they both looked to each other they knew as they headed out the door.

When they stepped outside the Reyes siblings were standing in the driveway. Jaime was pacing at the bottoms of the steps as his sister leaned casually on railing.

Jaime stopped pacing when saw them step outside, Gemma almost froze too having expected them to be gone already.

"Hey, are you okay? That was..."

"I appreciate the chivalry, but I can take care of myself, okay?" Jenny dismissed as she came to a stop.

But Gemma couldn't do the same, she kept walking towards the car where Javier was waiting for them. She was too nervous too look Jaime Reyes in the face and honestly she felt embarrassed. He clearly hadn't recognized her, and she felt foolish for saying his name.

Gemma had never thought she would have seen him again after high school, and she wished that had been the case.

"Totally. But I mean... what a dick, right?" Gemma heard Jaime say as Javier opened the car door for them.

"She's a Kord. They're all dicks." Jaime's sisters replied and her words caused Gemma to finally turn around to see Jenny's reaction.

It was no surprise when Jenny chuckled as she looked between the two siblings. "Jenny Kord. We're not all dicks."

"Obviously. Yeah. Uh...". Jaime said at a loss of any real words, but there really was no recovering from his sister's words. Suddenly he turned and looked to Gemma who for a moment considered leaping inside the car to hide. "Hey do I know you?"

His words caused Gemma to feel more embarrassed than she already did. She couldn't even look him in the eye.

"That's Gemma Ivo you idiot." Jaime's sister said as she sat down on the steps of Jennifer Kord's mansion. "We went to high school with her. I'm..."

"Milagros." Gemma said, because of course she pathetically knew the name of Jaime's sister. And she quickly realized her mistake. "I have a very good memory."

"Clearly, most people find Jaime really easy to forget." Milagros said as she looked down at her phone. Gemma couldn't help but fight back a smile amused by her.

She had always wanted a sibling, and seeing them was what she imagined it would be like.

"Uh...look I'm... I'm really sorry about this." Jenny said undoubtedly having sensed the awkward direction that this had the potential of going.

Gemma couldn't have been more grateful to have the attention directed away from her. All she wanted was to disappear.

"It's fine." Jaime attempted to dismiss, but he and his sister had lost their jobs because he had decided to play hero.

"Give me your phone. Let me give you my number."

Jaime's eyes widened in disbelief as he reached into his pocket handing Jenny his phone. "Okay. Yeah."

"Come by Kord Tower tomorrow." Jenny instructed as she typed her phone number in. "I might be able to get you a job somewhere else in our company."

"Yes. Oh, my gosh. That'd be great. I'll do anything. Really."

"Anything, huh?" Milagros questioned as she stood up. "Hey, you know he has a degree, right? Pre-law. You guys need any pre-lawyers?"

Jenny nodded but it was clear that her mind was far from anything that was happening here. And Gemma understood how Jenny felt it was the same way she felt when she had first found out about her father. Nothing else mattered but the shame of knowing that your own family was capable of doing such horrible things.

"Okay. Text me." Jenny stated meeting Gemma's eyes to see if she was also ready to leave.

The truth was that Gemma was ready to leave the instant she saw Jaime.

"How about you? Are you going to offer me a job?" Milagros questioned as she looked at Gemma who couldn't help but be shocked by the girl's boldness.

"Milagros!" Jaime scolded looking both embarrassed and horrified.

"What?" His sister questioned not finding any shame in asking for what she wanted. It was something that Gemma couldn't help but admire.

"Yes, of course." Gemma said slight stunned by her demand, but also amused with how direct she was.  Milagros handed Gemma her phone, and Gemma put her number in quickly before handing it back to her. "Call me, I'll find you something."

"Thanks boss." Milagros said satisfied with the way things had turned out for her and her brother.

Gemma offered Milagros a small smile before turn around back to Javier who offered his hand to help her inside.

Jenny followed in soon after, and they both remained silent for half of the drive. They were silent for two very different reason. Jenny was probably thinking about all the horrible things her aunt had said, while Gemma was too busy thinking about Jaime Reyes like a foolish teenage girl.

If she was lucky she would never have to see him again. Even if she gave Milagros that job the company was so big the odds of bumping into her again were slim.

But Gemma had to tell herself to focus. She wasn't a kid anymore and her problems didn't revolve around just one boy. There was Victoria Kord, who probably wasn't going to shut down the project even after Gemma's warning.

A/N: We finally got to Jaime! Now that Blue Beetle is out on digital expect more updates. I have some very fun moments planned soon.
