03| The Mad Scientist

Gemma had never stepped foot in a prison before, and Stryker's Island Penitentiary was no normal prison. The thought of stepping inside made her skin crawl, some of worst criminals in Metropolis were inside. The thought of being inside the same building as Metallo or Livewire made her sick.

The whole ferry ride to the island Gemma had attempted to convince herself that it was a bad idea. That she didn't need to see her father, that nothing good would come out of it. But she knew the truth not only did she want answers, she also wanted closure.

She stepped in the large visiting cell. It's dark grey walls made the room look somber, not that she expected anything else from a prison. The room was split in half by a large glass wall, there was a chair on both sides of the glass. The chairs were bolted down and it was obvious that a lot of thought went into designing the room.

Gemma decided to stand, knowing that she would not be able to sit still. She was too nervous and anxious for it, and she hoped her father would notice.

She felt her heart stop when the large iron door on the other side opened. Anthony Ivo stepped in followed my a prison guard who pulled him towards the singular chair on his side on the room.

He looked up to meet her eyes as they attached his chains to the ground, giving him enough room to sit down. Gemma tried not to react to the sight of him, but it was almost impossible not to.

The injuries he sustained when the Justice League had gone after him left him terribly disfigured. The handsome and charming tech genius now looked like the mister he was. The burns marks that covered the entirety of his face and most of his body left his unrecognizable.

Gemma looked away instinctively having forgotten the state he was in.

"Have to say I wasn't expecting a visit from my daughter." Anthony Ivo said calmly as he took a seat on chair that was in his side of the cell.

Gemma gathered her courage to look her father in the eyes again. "I'm here out of necessity. Not because I care."

"I'm set up very comfortably here. Thanks for asking." He replied instead as he leaned back in his chair, he seemed so relaxed or maybe he thought this was all a game.

"Much more comfortable than you deserve I'm sure."

"Such harsh words from a kind and gentle girl like you." Her father said and it was clear that he wasn't taking any of this seriously. He had never taken her seriously.

Annoyed Gemma decided that she had to take control of the situation, show him that she had to be taken seriously. "What kind of business deal do you have with Victoria Kord?"

"You waste no time kid."

"I'm not a kid anymore."  She stated firmly, though she could feel how sweaty her hand were. "Answer my question."

"Did you crack the encryption?" He asked and he began to laugh when she gave him no answer, standing up from his chair he stepped closer to the glass. "You always were a smart girl."

"Unfortunately I think I got it from you."

He smirked seeming pleased with himself. He didn't care about her that much she knew, but Gemma also knew that he prided himself enough in knowing that like him she was considered a genius at a young age.

"When Ted Kord and I worked at S.T.A.R. Labs he discovered something he called the scarab. Alien technology that he was never able to crack. I never was a fan of xeno- science, even then." Anthony Ivo began, and had to stop herself from rolling her eyes. "He became obsessed with that thing. Had completely forgotten about the scarab until a year ago."

"I'm not really interested in your life story." Gemma said not really interested in what her father was up to at her age. He had started working at S.T.A.R. Labs when he was younger than her, everyone called him a genius. They weren't wrong, but Gemma didn't see how any of this had to do with what she had asked him.

"Aren't you impatient? Must have gotten that from me too." He replied seeming annoyed with the interruption. "Everything I'm telling you is important."

"Then can you at least give me the sparknotes notes version of this?"

"The Scarab has healing properties. Whatever alien technology powers it protects its host at all costs. Forming powerful armor and weapons around it hosts. Remarkable technology that unfortunately can't be accessed by just anyone, the Scarab chooses its host. I heard trying to crack it drove Ted Kord mad."

He was rambling and it seemed like he wanted to draw everything out more than it had to be. But Gemma was able to put together what he had planned from the little he was giving her.

"You wanted to combine the alien tech with the cyborg that you created."

"OMAC." He confirmed seeming proud of himself even though that clearly it resulted in failure considering he abandoned the project and created AMAZO instead. "But Ted Kord is missing and his sister Victoria.... let's just say if you think I'm terrible you certainly don't want to meet her."

"You weren't able to crack it either."

"The Scarab went missing along with Ted." He corrected, almost like he believed that if given the chance he would have been able to succeed where Ted Kord failed. "Victoria swore she would find it. A failure just like her brother."

Gemma looked at him in disbelief, at the lengths he had gone to in attempt to create a cyborg to defeat the Justice League. But now Victoria Kord has the plans to create her own cyborgs and even though she didn't have the technology to make it functional, she certainly had the resources to do it.

"You're not going to ask me the question that you really want to ask?"

He wanted her to ask, and although she didn't want to give him the satisfaction of doing what he wanted she also wanted closure. "Why did you do it?"

"The Justice League are gods. They're indestructible, they have amazing healing abilities, they're probably immortal." Anthony Ivo exclaimed and Gemma finally saw it, the reason why they called him a mad scientist. Maybe she didn't want to see it before, but it was painfully obvious now. There was a look in his eye that sent a chill through her. "It's not fair. Why do they get to live forever?"

"That's why AMAZO was taking DNA samples from the members of the Justice League."

He nodded almost eagerly as he leaned closer to the glass. "You can use those samples and find a way to give us their abilities. We can be immortal too. You could fix me."

"I destroyed them." Gemma stated and she watched as his face twisted in anger. She had found the DNA samples of every member of the Justice League. She knew immediately what her father intended and destroyed those samples.

Gemma was very aware that in the wrong hands that information had the potential of causing a lot of damage. There was not a second that she doubted that she had done the right thing.

"You did what?" He exclaimed as he began to tug on his chains, a frightening look in his eyes. "Foolish girl!"

Standing up Gemma walked to the large iron door knocking once. Their conversation was over and even then she couldn't help but look back at him one last time. "Good thing you're comfortable because it looks like you're going to be here for a very long time."

When the guard finally opened the door Gemma didn't waste a second stepping outside. She couldn't take another moment in that room with him.

As much as she wanted to believe that the confident and collected girl that she pretended to be inside the room she knew the truth. It wasn't until she stepped inside the car and her driver closed the door that she allowed some tears to fall down her cheeks.

But a couple of tears was all she would allow herself because her father did t deserve anymore than that.

Gemma wasn't sure how long her stay at Palmera City would be, but she tended to over pack for every trip no matter how short. She supposed it was a good thing that her house in a Palmera still had a lot of her belongings.

As she struggled getting the last of her suitcases out of the door, Gemma was surprised to see Thomas's car stop in her driveway.

"What are you doing?" Thomas questioned as he practically ran up the steps of the mansion. He looked worried and confused.

"I'm catching the next flight to Palmera City."  She informed as she handed her driver the last of her bags. "Gracias Javier."

"I don't think that's a good idea."

"I talked to my father. He told me everything." Gemma stated though she had no intention of telling him the whole story. It felt like something that she needed to keep to herself until she could get everything figured out. "I need to stop her."

"That's not your responsibility." Thomas argued as he followed her down the steps of the mansion.

"It is. Me knowing about this and not doing anything makes me responsible."

"Maybe you should call the police then."

Calling the police had caused her mind, but what would they do? Kord Industries was known for producing high tech weapons, they couldn't arrest Victoria Kord for doing what her company is known to distribute. "I'm hoping that maybe I can talk her out of it."

"That's a little naive of you."

His words shocked her. He had never said anything cruel to her or maybe he was simply choosing to be brutally honest. But his words stung regardless.

Everyone around her saw her as a naive child, everyone doubted her. Maybe she just thought that Thomas was the only one who didn't.

"Maybe. But I'd like to think that there is some good in people."  Gemma said acknowledging that he did sound naive. But that didn't matter to her and she really had no other choice than to confront Victoria directly.

"Señorita." Javier say as he offered his hand to help her inside the car.

"Then let me go with you."

"This is my responsibility. Not yours." Gemma reminded him as she gave a single nod to Javier who closed the car door.

She didn't need his help with this, she could do it on her own. Anyways how hard could it possibly be?

A/N: Getting to know more about Gemma and her relationship with her father and also setting up the plot of the story. Also can't believe that this story has already reached 2k! That's amazing.
